If you plan to grow plants up your trellis then make sure the posts or wall that it is fixed to will support the weight of the trellis plus the full-grown plant.

It can be tempting to plant a variety of climbers, but a small space often benefits from bold planting using fewer varieties. Beware of using all deciduous plants because the structure will look bare in the winter.

Vines such as Vitis coignetiae, which has large heart-shaped leaves and beautiful autumn colour are great for a large area. V. vinifera ‘Purpurea’ has very attractive leaves which as the name suggests are purple. It produces bunches of dark, tightly clustered grapes.

Trellis is underutilised in most gardens, yet it has a myriad of uses. It can cover an ugly wall or screen an ugly garden building, and it can be used on one or more sides of a patio to provide privacy. You can use it as a framework to support plants but can also be a decorative feature in its own right. Strategically placed trellis can make a garden appear more interesting. Counterintuitively it can also provide the illusion of greater space by interrupting the line of

Clematis are a good choice. C. montana is vigorous and might swamp a small trellis, but if you have the space they can be grown through other climbers and produce a fabulous summer display.

Ivies are good for winter colour. Don’t think that all ivies are dark green. H. Helix ‘Goldheart’ has super attractive yellow leaves edged in bright green while H. helix ‘Chester’ has leaves with wide cream margins and is good for brightening up a gloomy area.

Passion flowers look very exotic and are a particularly good choice for a trellis.

Scented climbing roses are one of my favourite plants to grow up trellis which is screening a patio.

I love ‘Compassion’, which has the most beautiful blooms in pink / apricot, and a strong, sweet fragrance. Prune every winter.

Remember to check trellis every year for broken or rotten supports and treat periodically with wood preservative to prolong its life and freshen its appearance.

What can you do for Wildlife in June?

Charlotte Hastings, Professional Landscape Designer This is a great time for sitting back and enjoying the garden with so much to see and admire. There are many easy ways that you can support wildlife in the garden throughout the summer months.

• Leave some flowers to grow in your lawn as a source of pollen and nectar during the summer.

• Let some areas of lawn grow tall creating areas that are not only beautiful to look at but supportive of many species of butterfly and moth and other insects.

• Keep bird baths filled up.

• Create log piles which provide areas of shade for amphibians and other creatures.

• Choose bee-friendly plants such as Vipers bugloss, Meadow cranesbill (Geranium pratense), Catmint (Nepeta), Origanum vulgare, Field scabious and Wild carrot (Daucus carota).

My Favourite Plant Combinations for midsummer

Roses, clematis and geraniums look fabulous at this time of year if you are seeking a cottage garden feel. For a wonderful shady combination try Tellima grandiflora, Matteuccia struthiopteris (Shuttlecock fern) and Astrantia major. Or for sunny borders, Knautia macedonica, Saliva nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ and Eryngium x zabelii will give colour all through the summer months. For very dry and sunny spots try a statement grass such as Stipa gigantia, Nepeta racemosa ‘Walker’s Low’ as a great edging plant and Phlomis tuberosa ‘Amazone’ will give great structural interest into the winter months.

What to Plant now

Sow French and runner beans, peas, squash, sweetcorn and cucumbers directly outside into prepared beds. Continue sowing salad crops like beetroot, lettuce, pak choi and raddish to extend the window for harvesting. Most importantly, take time to pause and enjoy any outside space.

Is now the time to Remortgage if I’m on a variable rate?

With house prices rising in the UK by 12.1% in April 2022 on an annual basis, the Nationwide Building Society recently commented that the average UK house price is now £267,620 the lender adds this is £28,789 more since April 2021.

This means homeowners are finding they have more equity in their homes than they’ve had previously, homes this year have simply increased in value.

The Times reported that the chancellor Rishi Sunak believes that interest rates will rise by 2.5% in the next 12 months.

With the Bank of England moving interest rates in March 2022 from 0.5% to 0.75%, the increase has added over £300 to the average variable mortgage, which also comes in additional to the interest rate increases made in December 2021 and February 2022, together this has added £650 to the average variable mortgage.

Recently Moneyfacts reported, that in January this year, the average 2-year fixed rate stood at 2.38%, and the average 5-year fixed rate was 2.65%, but as of Easter’s Good Friday the average 2-year fixed rate is now 2.98% and the average 5-year fixed rate is now 3.11%. The Bank of England Members meet again on May 5th to decide whether the base rate should move again.

Where strength is found In the first part of Isaiah 30:15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation.” We learn that repenting is a choice, changing direction, and going God’s way, not our way. We also learn that rest is a counter-cultural concept; we live a fast, distracting, and exhausting lifestyle that directly opposes our spiritual lives.

We need to discover that our salvation is not found intentionally but in being, aligning ourselves in God and resting in Him. Easier said than done, I know.

So let us look at the next part of the verse, ‘In quietness and trust is your strength.’ Quietness is another anathema to our current culture, linked to rest. Quietness can be the last thing we experience, whether it’s the neighbour playing loudly, or the kids climbing up the walls on a rainy day, quietness can allude us. But despite the noise we experience, I think it points more to an attitude, something that can be found deep within, untouched by the world around us. I say this because we aren’t always in control of the things around us; another word we could use here is peace; when was the last time we had to gather our thoughts in peace. I believe the verse sheds light on the source of quietness that we can tap. The word ‘trust’ points to the source of this quietness or peace we so need. The person speaking these words is God through the prophet Isaiah; He is the Sovereign Lord (The King), the Holy one (the Only One) of Israel. He is calling us the trust in Him. Trust means to rely on, rest in, and lean on.

The God of the universe is offering us quietness by trusting Him, for He has got the strength to stand in the face of adversity. We are facing many things, a rise in the cost of living, a possible escalation of the war, we may be facing test results. Whatever we are facing, we can take hold of the offer of strength through quiet trust in Him that cannot be shaken; a peace that transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Now He is not offering you a magic wand to remove all our problems, no, but what He is offering is a way through them, to come through still standing. For He says, I will never leave you nor forsake you so that we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid, what can man do to me?’

Jubilee Celebrations No doubt you have already planned your celebrations to mark the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. No other British “Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee monarch has reigned Service” by Andrew Carrick Gow. Guildhall Art Gallery this long and even golden jubilees are rare. Henry III, Edward III and James VI and I all reigned for 50 years but there are few records about how these were marked although we do know that to celebrate Edward III’s golden jubilee in 1376 there was a spectacular week-long joust at London’s Smithfield which had begun with a magnificent procession from the Tower of London accompanied by trumpeters.

The only other monarchs who have reigned for 50 years are George III and Victoria. Celebrations for George III’s golden jubilee in 1809 were on a grand scale with processions, feasts and a 50-gun salute fired from the Tower of London. The jubilee was probably the first to be celebrated by the whole nation and there are reports of festivities in many places with local gentry and landowners providing food so that the poor and even those in prison could be included in the celebrations.

By the time of Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, the celebrations were even more impressive as were those for her diamond jubilee on 22 June 1897.

The coach drive around London from Buckingham Palace to a service at St Paul’s Cathedral was watched by hundreds of thousands of spectators.

The 78-year-old queen recorded: “No-one ever, I believe, has met with such an ovation as was given to me, passing through those six miles of streets...

The crowds were quite indescribable and their enthusiasm truly marvellous and deeply touching.

The cheering was quite deafening and every face seemed to be filled with joy.”

There were many street parties around the country and, in London, 400,000 of the poorest residents were treated to a feast sponsored by the tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton which included free bottles of ale and pipe tobacco. Parties and firework displays went on well into the evening and a chain of beacons was lit across Britain. By order of the government, and much to the disgust of the Temperance Movement, pubs remained open until 02:30.

We have seen a huge rise in scams recently – having to deal with the consequences of people having their computers accessed remotely by fraudsters. Impersonating organisations are the most common scams because the victim can be tricked into offering up personal details such as passwords or granting access to their computers. Banks, internet providers and Microsoft are among the most common impersonated organisations. Alarm bells should ring if anybody on the phone requests remote access to your computer. Scammers may know your customer details, which help them seem convincing. Try to make the outbound calls to organisations using their correct contact number, instead of trusting the person who called you, if you wish to verify the substance of the call. Using a mobile phone to do this may be safer, as often the scammers keep the line open after you hang up!

Summer Loving In praise of the romantic comedy

You do have to accept the limitations; it’s no good looking for clever subtext or the meaning of life here, and you have to be ok with cliché…actually you have to fully embrace it because cliché is the lifeblood of the rom-com.

For example, most characters in rom-coms work in advertising or journalism in a big city. Occasionally a doctor or a vet is allowed to be a main character, but the chances are at least one of the leads is trying to make a deadline or win a contract. There’s the ‘will they, won’t they?’ part of the storyline, and even though we know they inevitably will, it’s important when they meet for the first time, that there’s friction, or preferably intense dislike between the leads. Usually, this revolves around a car accident, or a situation where one of them acts uncharacteristically like a jerk. There is an unwritten rule that if one of the characters is a doctor or a vet they will inevitably be a ‘country’ doctor, or a ‘country’ vet and the big city journalist or advertising executive will learn salutary life lessons from their sweet, super sensible country ways...and there’s generally a community fete or barn dance where the chemistry begins.

For me, watching a rom-com is a lot like eating a whole tub of Ben and Jerry’s. You know you shouldn’t; you’ll probably feel slightly queasy afterwards, but it feels so good in the moment. They are perfect summer watching.

There are always ditsy / drunk / geeky / obnoxious / sensible-but-plain / seriously hot-but slightly dim / totally dysfunctional-but-loveable <delete as applicable according to the plot> best friends or family members.

These characters are there for their comedic value and they are always endearing, even the obnoxious ones.

Then there is a PROBLEM (capital letters intentional) for the couple to overcome. One of them isn’t who they say they are, or there’s a misunderstanding where one thinks the other is married / involved in fraud / a murderer. Basically, the relationship is ALWAYS entered into under false pretences by one or both parties in a rom-com. These false pretences may be real or entirely imagined but they will always cause a PROBLEM, usually exacerbated by a well-meaning and aforementioned best friend or family member.

Finally, there is a chase as one of the leads, driven to rash action by the PROBLEM, rushes off to take a new job in another country. Usually, the chase scene ends with a kiss in the rain...or a fountain...or a river. For some reason water features large in rom-com resolution scenes. Oh...and the guy nearly always apologises even if the woman was in the wrong. Because romcom rules dictate this...possibly because women are the target audience.

I know ALL this, and I still love rom-coms. Here are some great examples to discover or revisit this summer.

Raspberry Swiss Roll Home-made Swiss rolls are so good, and surprisingly easy to make

RECIPE

Place a sheet of baking paper, slightly bigger than the tray, onto a work surface and dust with caster sugar. Turn the sponge out onto the paper, peel off the baking paper on the bottom of the sponge and set aside to cool a little.

Pour the double cream and vanilla extract into a large bowl and whip to soft peaks.

Make the jam – Heat a pan until hot. Add the sugar, lemon zest and juice and cook for 3–4 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Throw in the 350g of raspberries and cook for 3–5 minutes until they break down and thicken. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.

Spread the jam over the sponge, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the jam, then sprinkle over the whole raspberries.

Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 10 to 30 mins Serves: 6–8 Ingredients: 4 free-range eggs 115g caster sugar, plus extra to dust ( you can also use icing sugar) ½ tsp vanilla bean paste 75g self-raising flour 200ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 200g whole raspberries For the raspberry jam 150g caster sugar ½ lemon, zest, and juice 350g raspberries

Starting with the longest edge of the sponge and using the baking paper to help (but take care not to roll the paper inside the sponge!), roll the sponge up tightly, making sure the filling stays inside. Keep rolling until the sponge rolls off the baking paper.

Dust with extra caster sugar or the icing sugar and cut into slices to serve.

Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5 and line a 23x33cm/9x13in Swiss roll tin with greaseproof baking paper.

Place the eggs, sugar and vanilla paste into a bowl and whisk together until pale, fluffy, and thickened to the consistency of double cream.

Sieve the flour into the mixture and carefully fold it in preserving as much air as possible. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and spread it evenly with the spatula.

Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until just firm to the touch.

Why Visual Clutter Matters

Falling in Love with a Drunken Bricklayer!

Hello there, I’m back to share one of my favourite tips and to chat about why visual clutter matters.

Wherever you are right now in your home – pause a moment and look up. Glance around the room and notice how many things are out on surfaces. Especially notice how many random things have been left or plonked and are waiting to be put away. Are there any piles of paper, magazines or books?

These things that aren’t put away are creating clutter not just in our physical environment, but also inside our head. It takes up thinking time and we often tell ourselves off about it. Getting into a habit of routinely putting things away means the visual clutter is reduced. Our head and mind become clear and it gives us space to think about other things. We feel so much lighter.

Try it now – set a timer on your phone and spend 5 minutes collecting things that have been left out. At the end of the 5 minutes, go and put them away where they usually live.

Notice the difference it’s made visually to that space and how it makes you feel after. It feels good, doesn’t it? I bet you already like that space better too. Am I right? Do that regularly and see how it helps keep on top of clutter.

My friend showed me an unusual vase he’d bought for his wife’s birthday. I was captivated by its colour and shape. ‘It’s a Drunken Bricklayer vase,’ he said, ‘I’ve been looking for one for ages.’ I’d never heard of such a vase so when he left I looked it up.

James Powell and Sons was one of the most important manufacturers of British art glass. The company was founded in the 17th century and was also known as Whitefriars Glass. After the second World War Whitefriars became known for innovative modern design. Geoffrey Baxter was a particular star, responsible for designing recognisable British art glass; the most notable and enduring example of this was his Drunken Bricklayer vases, though he is also known for his ‘Television’ and ‘Banjo’ vases.

Baxter’s work is highly collectable and rarer pieces can fetch a few hundred pounds.

Whitefriars Glass was the Wedgwood of the British glass industry, with the same ambitious standards of design and creativity, while remaining commercially desirable. Their glassware was sold by leading department stores including John Lewis and Fortnum & Mason.

Geoffrey Baxter joined Whitefriars as an art student in 1954 but didn’t develop his range of textured vases until 1967. He loved texture and used found objects including bark and nails to create moulds.

He introduced colours such as Tangerine, Meadow Green, Aubergine, Ruby, and Kingfisher blue, encasing the coloured glass inside clear glass. These textured pieces attracted international and domestic attention but during Britain’s economic decline in the 1970s the factory went into decline and was destroyed in the mid-eighties. Baxter remained with the company until the end.

Part of his success was due to the fact he switched to soda glass rather than sticking with full-lead crystal.

Soda glass was both cheaper and more flexible which meant his work could be bought by ordinary people. This was important to Baxter who once said, ‘It’s all very well to make a masterpiece, but what’s the point if only the elite can afford to buy it?.’

You can still find lovely original examples of Drunken Bricklayer cases. Expect to pay a few hundred pounds for the best examples.

A Good Read The Quiet at the End of the World

This novel is a deeply human story about a ‘soft apocalypse’ what happens when humans stop being able to reproduce, and you have to slowly watch your entire species go extinct as you grow up?

Teenagers Lowrie and Shen are the youngest humans left on earth.

In February 2024, the population of the world was infected with a virus that made them all infertile. The only humans conceived after this date were from eggs frozen at fertility clinics.

Now it’s 2109 and the population of the earth is so small that the last people have congregated in central London. They make a proxy family to protect Lowrie and Shen. The young people are taught the life skills on which they will depend when they are the last people left alone.

Alongside the remaining humans are robots working to protect the planet and the people, including lifeguard robot Mitch, who patrols the banks of the river Thames ready to save anyone in difficulty. It is Mitch who saves Lowrie and Shen when a helicopter crashes near where they are searching for treasure. The pilot had a seizure and crashed into Big Ben. Over the next few days, others start to have seizures fall unconscious, and Lowrie and Shen need to find a way to help them before they really are the only two people left on the planet.

The Quiet at the End of the World is a blend of philosophy and sci-fi. Woven through the plot is the story of Maya Waverley, told through old social media posts. Through Maya, Lowrie learns all about the past, the virus, the symptoms, and what happened to the world, and Maya.

Beautiful, melancholic, and hopeful - this is a book written for the times we live in. ‘The Quiet at the End of the World’ might restore your faith in humanity.

The journal closes with one final, desperate entry addressed to Olivia: “The shadows are not real. The dreams can never hurt you. And you will be safe as long as you stay away from Gallant.”

Then Olivia receives a letter from an uncle she’s never heard of, requesting that she goes to Gallant, which is the Prior family estate. at first she’s entranced by the colourful surroundings, and the kind staff, and even the house ghouls. The only person who is hostile towards her is her cousin Matthew. Gallant is a place of secrets. Olivia is forbidden to leave the house at night and is strangely drawn to the crumbling wall at the edge of the garden, which holds back a menace that no one wants to talk about.

This is a multi-layered modern-day gothic novel.

It has it all: a haunted house, a dark, forbidding atmosphere, a tragic love story, and a rebellious heroine desperate to find her place in the world. Schwab’s use of eerie imagery pairs with the illustrations to produce the magical feel of a novel which has the potential to become a classic.

PAYROLL REAL TIME INFORMATION Under RTI, employers or their agents are required to make regular payroll submissions for each pay period during the year, detailing payments and deductions made from employees each time they are paid. There are two main returns which an employer needs to make which are detailed below.

PAYMENTS TO HMRC

FULL PAYMENT SUBMISSION (FPS)

Penalties apply where employers fail to meet their RTI filing and payment obligations.

The FPS must be sent to and reach HMRC on or before the date employees are paid. This submission details pay and deductions made from an employee.

EMPLOYER PAYMENT SUMMARY (EPS) Employers may also have to make a further return to HMRC each month, the EPS covers the following situations: • where no employees were paid in the tax month; • where the employer has received advance funding to cover statutory payments; • where statutory payments are recoverable (such as Statutory Maternity Paternity or Shared Parental Pay) together with the National Insurance Compensation payment; or • where CIS deductions are suffered which could be offset (companies only). HMRC will offset the amounts recoverable against the amount due from the FPS to calculate what should be payable. The EPS needs to be with HMRC by the 19th of the month to be offset against the payment due for the previous tax month.

Please bear in mind that under RTI HMRC are aware of the amount due on a monthly/quarterly basis through the FPS and EPS.

PENALTIES Late filing penalties apply to each PAYE scheme, with the size of the penalty based on the number of employees in the scheme. Monthly penalties of between £100 and £400 may be applied to micro, small, medium and large employers.

Each scheme is subject to only one late filing penalty each month regardless of the number of returns submitted late in the month. There will be one unpenalised default each year with all subsequent defaults attracting a penalty.

HMRC charges daily interest on all unpaid amounts from the due and payable date to the date of payment, and will raise the charge when payment in full has been made.

China comes to Wells Wednesday 1st June: In 1993, in preparation before building the museum archive and Wells City Archive purpose-built storage building at the rear of the Wells & Mendip Museum on Cathedral Green, archaeologists uncovered an amazing stash of pottery from a demolished cellar in the museum garden. It included exotic pieces of porcelain from China, the largest of its kind ever excavated in the south west. Many of the plates, tea bowls and other pieces were still largely intact.

Wells Floral Art Club Wednesday 1st June and Tuesday 14th June: Club members will be decorating the Bishop’s Chapel at the Bishop’s Palace to celebrate HM the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. They will be displayed from June 1st over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Looking Ahead! On July 30th we will be holding a cream tea and demonstration at the above address in aid of Wells Macular Society. This charity was voted on by our members before lock down and we are now pleased to be able to fulfil this commitment.

Researchers have been studying and repairing the collection for the past nine months and are now ready to share the wonderful stories that they have uncovered through the scenes on the porcelain.

The Wells & Mendip Museum is running two workshops for primary aged children and their carers on Wednesday 1 June 2022.

The scene will be set and imaginations fired by a storyteller and by an exhibition of the fabulous pottery itself.

There are then activities to enjoy, including plate painting, making a porcelain pot, a mock archaeological dig and pottery repair and identification. Archaeologists and pottery experts will be there to answer questions and lend a hand.

We’re hoping to devise a board game full of pirates, lost cargoes, landslides and invitations to take tea.

A Quick Cup of Coffee The history of instant coffee

I thought instant coffee was a recent innovation, but it has actually been around since the turn of the last century.

A chemist named George Constant Washington, developed and patented a coffee compound branded as Red E Coffee in the US. It was quite different to the instant coffee we know today, and a world away from fresh coffee. In the 1930s, the Brazilian coffee industry, wanted to develop a way to

preserve excess coffee crops and experimented with liquid coffee extract. It was Nestlé, who pioneered powdered coffee, producing its iconic product in 1938. Instant coffee found popularity during the Second World War because of its a convenience and long shelf life, and the fact that it could be made anywhere without the need for a coffee machine. In fact, one year, the U.S. military bought more than one million cases of Nescafé, which represented a whole year’s output for the company!

In 1963 Maxwell House developed a freeze-drying process which came to dominate the market and gave a taste more comparable with fresh coffee.

The green coffee bean is first roasted to bring out flavour and aroma. The roasted beans are then finely ground and dissolved in water. This coffee solution is then dried by one of two methods: freeze drying, which is the removal of water by sublimation; or spray drying.

These modern manufacturing methods have greatly improved the taste and solubility instant coffee, allowing better aroma and complexity of taste but it can never match the taste of the freshly ground variety. However, for convenience in a busy life, it’s an instant win!

Saturday 18th June: The residents, staff and Trustees of the City of Wells Almshouses are looking forward to opening their Chapel, Guildroom and gardens for an Open Day on Saturday 18 June from 11:00am to 4:00pm. There will be ploughman’s lunches and our famous cakes and gateaux served in the Bubwith site and there will be talks about the history in the chapel.

The Llewellyns gardens are of special interest this year due to the new paving that is newly completed.

Everyone is welcome to come along and look at these historic dwellings, some of which date back to the 15th Century and to walk around the beautiful gardens and talk to the residents and volunteers.
