Draycott art club started back last September with a very full program and they are very excited to be holding their first exhibition for several years at Wells Museum. Cheddar Valley u3a Midsummer Coffee Morning Thursday 1st and 15th September: Our Midsummer Coffee Morning, held at The Riverside in Cheddar, exceeded all expectations, with a record number of attendees. Just short of 100 members (around 20% of the membership) joined together for the final coffee morning until September. The weather

favoured us, being bright and sunny, but not too hot and a very sociable time was had by all.

We now look forward to restarting our usual social and special interest events, beginning with the new season of Speaker Meetings on 1st September, when Andrew Powell-Thomas will be telling us about ‘The Fifty Gems of Somerset’. This is taking place in the new Catholic Hall at Tweentown, starting with tea and coffee at 2:00pm. Please ensure you take note of the different venue, for this occasion. The September coffee morning will follow on 15th September in the Village Hall, from 10:00am until 11:30am. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there, especially our new members

Health walks for Cheddar

Axbridge Royal British Legion

Saturday 3rd and 17th September: In September we are walking as usual, on Saturday 3rd September starting at Sharpham Road car park to walk the droves near the reservoir. On Saturday 17th September we are meeting at Winscombe Football Club to walk the Strawberry line to the Sandford Station Heritage Centre for coffee. All walks start at 10:30am. A new programme for October to January hopefully will be available this month. These walks are run under the umbrella of Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership.

Tuesday 6th September: The September meeting will be the 6th September at 11:00am in The Lamb Inn, Axbridge. The speaker will be Steve Derby and his talk entitled The Life and Times of a Stupid Boy. If this looks interesting please do come along. You do not have to be a member. Everyone will be made very welcome, young, not so young, male, female, local resident or just visiting we’d love to meet you.

Updating your bathroom?

AHM Installations takes the hassle out of finding the right tradespeople When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. “We created a completely new space from scratch”, said Charles Weeks, Bathroom Surveyor at AHM. The dividing wall was knocked down, a new ceiling was put in and a new extractor fan was installed.

The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. The family are delighted with their new wetroom.

Never or rarely used a computer?

We meet a lot of people fixing computers, and often there is one member of the family who doesn’t use, or rarely uses, a computer/tablet. We have decided that this month will be dedicated to those who know they should ‘get online’ or already have, but need a little extra help.

If you are one of these people, or know somebody that could benefit from help, please get in touch.

We can both supply equipment, advise on an internet connection and also offer friendly training in your own home. Age should not be a factor as we have several customers in their 90s whose interest in computing keeps them in touch with the world and creates a better quality of life. We can start with small steps, such as setting up and how to use email. Maybe checking the weather or how to research a holiday or a new vehicle. The trick is to spend a small amount of time each day getting more confident. Once this is achieved, people have years of enjoyment with their device.

If your eyes struggle, we can look at a bigger screen. Many laptops and most desktop computers can be connected to a larger screen, which makes your enjoyment so much easier if you have been struggling with a small screen for years.

Scams are still in full force – so please remind any elderly friends and family that if the phone rings, it may not be who they say they are. If in any doubt, ring off and double check with a friend or family member first.

Remember to keep your device up to date with manufacturer updates – this is particularly important on Windows, Apple and Android devices. If your device is too old and can no longer be updated, you should consider replacing the device, especially if you make any financial transactions or find the device particularly slow.

Retirement Mortgages There are so many more traditional repayment and interest-only mortgage options available to customers aged 55 and over, there’s not just ‘Equity Release’. A number of mortgage lenders will allow customers to borrow money to age 80 and beyond with some specialist lenders having no maximum age at all.

Mainstream (non-equity release) mortgages can be used to release equity in your home for almost any purpose, they can also be used to raise funds for home improvements, debt consolidation, remortgaging and more.

The main difference between a traditional mortgage and equity release is that the maximum loan amount is based on your income in retirement which can be made up of a state/ private pension as well as income from almost any source.

With people working for longer, many lenders will also take employed and self-employed income well beyond state pension age.

With non-equity release mortgages, a customer will need to make monthly interest payments (and capital if a repayment mortgage is preferred) and as a result, the original loan

amount will not increase as it does with a ‘rolled-up Equity Release’ mortgage, so the equity within the property is protected.

Retirement Interest only mortgages (RIOs) were introduced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in March 2018 as an alternative to Equity Release and as a secured lending choice for customers aged 55 and over regardless of whether they are retired or still working. RIOs are similar to a standard interest only mortgage, the main difference being that there is no term - the mortgage will run indefinitely and only repaid on the customer(s) entering long term care or death. RIO mortgages can be repaid early in the same way mainstream mortgages are there are also fixed rates available.

“The Gauntlet” A 1000 years of history The Gauntlet sits within the boundaries of 11 High Street, a typical medieval Burgage plot which encapsulates various historical periods that date back the best part of a 1000 years.

The evidence provided from two extensive archaeological studies prior to development, revealed continual settlement had undoubtedly taken place on this site since the 11th / 12th century. Further finds such as Roman sherds were believe to have been deposited by those passing through the town.

Artefacts from the excavations were logged and transported to the Somerset Museum where they are currently stored and displayed. Several old coins were also discovered which were subsequently recorded and published in one of the Gauntlet books: The Treasure beneath our feet.

During the first phase of the building works, a vast amount of building materials found on site were believed to have been robbed during the dissolution of the Abbey in 1540, indeed some flag stones still remain in shop 11 on east side. The timber floor boards on the upper floors were salvaged from the tall ships as sail gave way to steam.

Secret integral passageways from Flat 4 and Shop 9 were subsequently discovered. The former accessible through to the Tribunal staircase on the west side and the latter accessed the Tribunal kitchen, which had been re-erected in the 15th Century with a further storey added a century later.

The building on the east wing opposite, that sits behind the High Street Shop ranges from early to late Victorian. However the framework and fabric pre-dates much earlier, probably to the 16th / 17th century.

In the early 19th century, the Landlord of both 11 and 13 High street was the mayor of the town, namely Jonathan Payne Newman. He was responsible for erecting the regency styled shop of which you see today in the High street. This replaced an earlier 14th century Barber Apothecary cottage in around 1830.

In 1897 the premises were occupied by Bowring Hawkins, Property surveyors, Auctioneers and estate agents. The shop also served as a library in the late 19th century.

Frank Goodall, the auctioneers and stationers, occupied the shop from the early 20th century, who were responsible for auctioning many of the Abbey treasures. In more recent times in the 1960s and 70s it was a Curry’s electrical branch and later in the 90s a Spar General Store.

In 2003 the land and premises were purchased by entrepreneur Doug Hill who renovated, converted, and extended the site to form what you see today. The development was arguably the most significant in the towns history since the original mapping out by the Normans in the 11th century.

On July 4th 2007, another chapter of history was made as The Gauntlet Shopping Thoroughfare was opened to the public for the first time. In 2008 The Gauntlet went on to scoop two major LABC awards, becoming champions of Somerset and the South West of England.

Today the Gauntlet is considered Glastonbury’s jewel in the crown, a global iconic landmark which is adored by thousands of tourists and locals alike.

Upholding Traditions Upholstery is an ancient craft. It’s been around since early Egyptian, Indian and Chinese civilisations, and in 14th century England, The Worshipful Company of Upholders was founded. The emblem of this early guild of upholsterers displayed three tents, and upholsterers would have worked alongside tent makers, saddlers, undertakers and cabinet makers.

At one time upholstered furniture would have been the preserve of the exceedingly rich, but with the development of modern manufactured materials, it has now become affordable to us all.

It takes years of training and practice to become a master upholsterer and we are still working on traditional antiques using horsehair, hessian, coil springs and coir. We hand stitch, shape and manipulate natural materials, using techniques and tools that have been around for centuries.

Upholstery is now considered to be an endangered heritage craft, yet more and more people have been taking it up as a leisure pursuit.

The One World Fair, organised by the Mid Somerset Oxfam Group, is returning to the Wells Town Hall after a two-year gap, on Saturday 8th October.

Each charity at the Fair will have its own stall and will use it to showcase its particular cause. Some will be raising funds by selling gifts, books, cakes, handcrafts or fairly traded goods.

The OWF Diner will be serving hot vegetarian lunches, with tea, coffee and homemade cakes throughout the day.

Ian, a local postman, suffered terrible blisters in temperatures of up to 56C and Chris, an NHS paramedic, found he couldn’t swallow in reaction to the tremendous heat. However, they both completed what is generally accepted as one of the toughest races on the planet. They have now raised over £10,000 for Hounds for Heroes.

Handover 2022 - Cheddar Vale Lions

The Open Gardens event held in July was well attended and as a result we are able to make a £600 donation to the David Worker Legacy Fund, this a fund set up to benefit Shipham clubs and societies that use the Village Hall. Once again many thanks to those that supported the event and helped to make it so successful.

After three years as our Club President, Lion Keith Cook was “delighted” to hand over the Chain of Office! However, it’s not going to be far out of his sight as Lion Sylvia Cook now takes over for the Lionistic Year 2022-23. Cheddar Vale Lions and Friends had a lovely, relaxed gathering at the new Cheddar Community Pavilion, with a delicious cream tea, to mark the event. The Handover gathering was also an opportunity to present a cheque for the money raised from the Duck Race to Children’s Hospice SW. Lucy Perriman was delighted to receive the fabulous sum of £1730 on behalf of CHSW. Our thanks to Lion Keith for “steering the ship” in what have sometimes been turbulent seas these past 3 years, and all good wishes to our new Lion President Sylvia for the year ahead.

Shipham and District Gardening Club

Prickles Hedgehog Rescue of Cheddar is looking for volunteers. Prickles is now caring for over 50 hedgehogs and we are looking for adult volunteers who have spare time for either cleaning out the hedgehogs from 9:00am till noon or feeding the hedgehogs from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. Full training will be given and you will be part of a team that is overseen by our friendly Duty Managers. If you feel you can help please give us a call on 07806 744772.

What does being a volunteer involve?
