The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!

LOCAL EXPERT PAGE www.localreach.co.uk | 5 TO ADVERTISE CALL 01934 312171

A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not, i.e., Howlers?!

One of the first things we learned in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler? Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.

Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No, it’s not.

Hallowe’en Howlers…or Not? Graeme Robertson, OvenGleamers
Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. Cro-Magnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.

No Painting or repairs to your fence for 25 years? …It must be a ColourFence Fencing!

There’s a choice of colours to harmonise and enhance your garden’s design and the option of plain or trellis panels.

ColourFence is a metal garden fence solution that once fitted requires no treatments or repairs. It’s guaranteed not to warp, crack, shrink, rot or peel for the next 25 years.

And, unlike other fences, ColourFence can withstand wind gusts of up to 130mph.

Call Jordan or Courtney on 01823 792029 today for a free no obligation visit or for further information visit colourfencetaunton.co.uk

Both sides of the panels are the same colour meaning both you and your neighbour have a stunning fence to look at year after year, helping you build good neighbourly relations.
Summer is here and there is always plenty to do in the garden. However, with ColourFence, one of the most tedious, timeconsuming jobs disappears overnight.
Our panels are eight feet wide and include the intermediate posts, unlike standard wooden panels. Whatever the shape of your garden we can step, rake or cut your ColourFence to size, allowing your boundary to follow the natural contours of your land.

For Apple phones and tablets: Click Settings > General > Software Update – the latest update at the time of writing is iOS 15.6.1 so please update to this or a newer update if available. For older devices that cannot be updated, it would be wise to consider replacing them, as they could be a security risk, and are likely not performing particularly well.
For Window computers: Click the Start Button, then Settings, then Windows Update. You should install any mentioned updates and restart when prompted, then re-visit the same screen to see if there are any further updates. For any computers not running Windows 11, we strongly suggest upgrading.

For Apple computers: The current MacOS is called “Catalina” (also likely to be replaced in September) - From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose “About This Mac”. This will display the name of the operating system. If it does not show Catalina, you can usually update via the App Store App by searching for Catalina. Please note that not all Macs will update to the latest MacOS, especially those over 7 years old, but there will still be minor updates available via the “Software Update” button within the “About this Mac” screen.

Shipham Players To Perform Improbable Fiction by Alan Ayckbourn
Friday 11th and Saturday 12th November: Shipham Players next production is the comedy ‘Improbable Fiction’ by Alan Ayckbourn. Improbable Fiction is Alan Ayckbourn’s 69th play and is about Pendon Writers’ Circle who are having collective writers’ block, but an interruption by a young woman unleashes their imaginations - with surprising results!
One of the major inspirations for the play was Alan Ayckbourn’s experiences with a writing group for whom he had given a talk. It becoming increasingly obvious to the playwright that very little writing was taking place and that it was more a social gathering. Despite its challenging prop and technical demands, it is one of the most performed plays Alan Ayckbourn has written since 2000 by amateur drama companies in the UK.
Coffee mornings: First Monday of the month, 10.00am - 12noon (except bank holidays and August).

Speaker meetings: Third Monday of the month, 2.00pm for tea/coffee, followed by visiting speaker. Visiting speakers cover a wide variety of topics. (Except on bank holidays and August).

AHM Installations takes the hassle out of finding the right tradespeople

· Member of the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) · Check-a-trade score 10/10 (May 2021)

“AHM is an absolutely wonderful company – we couldn’t recommend it more. It’s made such a difference to Dad and to all of us. Amazing designers and the men who fitted it were wonderful, polite and patient.” AHM often have jobs that require structural work. AHM take the hassle out of organising the tradespeople you need to complete the job. All our fitters are members of BIKBBI which means they are DBS checked, fully insured and continually monitored. AHM Installations is a family-run firm installing safe, affordable bathrooms for people with limited mobility. Call us on 01934 318438 to discuss your needs.
The Booth* family called AHM Installations for advice as their father, who uses a wheelchair, was struggling to access the bathroom easily and safely. They wanted to have their downstairs study and toilet knocked together to form one large wetroom. This may sound like a job for a builder, but AHM have all the skills and experience you need.
Updating your bathroom?
“We created a completely new space from scratch”, said Charles Weeks, Bathroom Surveyor at AHM. The dividing wall was knocked down, a new ceiling was put in and a new extractor fan was installed. The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. The family are delighted with their new wetroom.

When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. But there may be structural work needed too – AHM Installations can do it all. For example, you could create a bigger bathroom by removing a wall or create a new ensuite bathroom by adding a wall. If you wanted a more powerful shower the electric cables could need updating. A floor might need taking up to examine the pipework underneath. A good installations company doesn’t shy away from this type of work because it ensures that your bathroom is safe; that it meets regulations and that it works for you. The last thing you want in your bathroom is dodgy electrics!

As the October winds start to blow, we are all too aware that a hard winter lies ahead for everyone. In this new climate that is more than unsettling we all need to try our best to watch out for each other. There have been numerous ideas on how to cut down on our energy use. Even simple things like unplugging chargers when they are not in use can save extra money. Only fill the kettle for the cups you are making, don’t boil water you’re not going to use. Taking a shorter shower will save and fill your washing machine instead of doing small loads. Many washing machines now have a mixed load which is useful if washing a mixture of fabrics. When it comes to mixing darks and lights that’s tricky. But it may be a necessity as time goes on. Make sure you check for colour fastness and use a lower temperature; most washing products will work well at 30 degrees. Fill the dishwasher before turning it on and remember it can still be cheaper to run a full load in your dishwasher then heating lots of hot water to wash up by hand.
When we are cooking, we can save a lot of energy just by adjusting how we do things. Boil the water you need in a kettle before pouring it over the food you want to cook in a pan, and always choose a pan that fits the amount of food you’re cooking. Using the microwave or slow cooker will save pounds, and when using the oven use glass and ceramic dishes instead of metal trays as they retain the heat. Pressure cookers may sound old fashioned, but they cook food quickly and efficiently and modern ones are easy to use.

As you may be aware the Axbridge & Wedmore Community Health Fund is undertaking a feasibility study for a replacement branch surgery in Wedmore, to provide long-term income for the Fund. Axbridge & Wedmore Medical Practice is part of North Sedgemoor Primary Care Network (PCN). This network is composed of five practices, Axbridge & Wedmore, Cheddar, Brent, Burnham and Highbridge. We have been informed that NHS England and NHS Improvement have very recently instigated a ‘Clinical and Estate Strategy’ programme across all Primary Care Networks. This review is designed to anticipate future clinical service requirements and the estate that will be needed to fulfil those needs. This review will assess the needs of the whole North Sedgemoor PCN community, and not just Wedmore. This is unlikely to be completed until sometime in 2023.This means that our plans for a ‘new surgery’ or health facility to replace the existing Wedmore surgery cannot be seen in isolation from the needs of the population covered by the PCN. Therefore our ‘new surgery’ project must be put on hold and await the outcome of the ‘Clinical and Estate Strategy’ review from NHS England before progressing plans any further. We will ensure that any work that has been completed so far on this project will be incorporated and taken into consideration in this ‘Clinical and Estate Strategy’ review.
We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our donors and those that have worked so hard on this project so far.

We had a customer in our Cheddar shop recently who said that she had been “disappointed with the service she received from John Lewis as she couldn’t get to speak to anyone about her order”. So, preferring to shop locally, she asked us to quote for the same curtains and blinds using the fabric that she had found. Although we told her at the outset that we couldn’t compete on price with the big retailers we could offer great quality, customer service, convenience and real value. However, when she received our quote, she said she was disappointed that we were more expensive than John Lewis!

Hi, I’m Mary, Slimming World consultant at Churchill. Here’s my story of how Slimming World changed my life forever! For many years I was overweight and always out of breath. I tried to lose weight using a range of other methods/ organisations to no avail.

Becoming a grandparent for the first time made me realize I really needed to lose weight, be healthier, fitter and live longer too! So, in 2014 I joined Slimming World and in 27 weeks I lost over 2 1/2 stone. That little bit of me-time every week showed me the way to eat/drink healthily, be happy with my new weight and enjoy the friendly company of others in the group, all with the same aim.

Somerset Wildlife Trust launches critical appeal to help raise funds needed to care for its nature reserves
The charity looks after a total of 68 nature reserves spread across Somerset, which include areas of ancient woodland, flower-rich meadows, and precious wetland. These are habitats which have become increasingly rare in the wider countryside, filled with vulnerable species, including the onceextinct large blue butterfly and rare species such as the dormouse, bechstein’s bat, and great crested newt. The reserves are exceptionally important in their own right, but they also play a vital role in Somerset’s Nature Recovery Network, acting as core, nature-rich sites from which wildlife can spread into the wider landscape.
Somerset Wildlife Trust is asking for support as it launches its annual Nature Reserves Fund appeal. First launched in 2016, this Fund enables the Trust to care for and maintain its nature reserves, which are some of Somerset’s most important sites for wildlife. The Fund has raised over 160,000 since it was first established, 100% of which has been put towards the care and protection of the reserves.
CALL

Rachael Fickweiler, Head of Nature Reserves at Somerset Wildlife Trust, has said: “We know that things are difficult for people financially at the moment, but we ask that people give what they can to ensure we can all continue to connect to and value these special places long into the future.
Unfortunately, the cost of looking after these nature reserves rises every year. The Trust estimates that it is currently costing £2,600 a day to maintain them
Every donation made to the Nature Reserves Fund makes a crucial difference to our ability to maintain these special sites, which are not only beautiful places but most importantly safeguard a significant range of rare plants and animals.”

— and this is even with the help of many committed and skilled volunteers working on site. Included in this cost is the maintenance and improvement of wildlife habitats, fence repairs required for conservation grazing, dealing with the impacts of diseases like ash dieback, and all the work that is required to ensure visitors are kept safe and able to enjoy the fantastic wildlife on the reserves.

National Trust: Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright!: An Animal Poem for Every Day of the Year by Fiona Waters (Author), Britta Teckentrup (Illustrator)
Poetry encourages creativity - Writing poetry encourages children to think about and find meaning in their experiences and to be able to articulate them and think about things in a new way.
By Sarah Davey
Poetry builds reading, speaking, and listening skills - Poetry is intended to be read aloud, repeated often, and shared. Children learn to attend both to the words they hear, the rhythm and rhyme, and also to think about what those words mean together.
National Poetry Day 6th October

WHY do we have to learn poetry? My 11-year-old who has just started senior school was moaning about homework.

Poetry inspires writing - Poetry teaches children how to put words together to form meaning and context. They learn that choosing the right words is important.
Poetry introduces more complex language and vocabulary - Poetry allows teachers to show children how language can be broken down and evaluated in parts. This is useful for literacy. The rhymes teach phonics and letter sounds. The verses can be used to teach sentence structure and grammar. Children are exposed to new words in context and learn how those words are chosen for their effect to create imagery.

Good question. I remember asking the same one when I was a similar age. I don’t think I got a satisfactory answer then so in the name of research I spoke to a couple of English teachers.
