Crime, Punishment and the Midsummer Assizes Whilst we are all familiar with magistrates’ courts (hopefully not from personal experience) these were previously known as the Petty Sessions, were held Assize judge arriving at the Town Hall in various places ©Wells Museum around the county and were presided over by a Justice of the Peace. They dealt, as the name suggests, with small misdemeanours such as allowing your horse to stray onto the public highway or being drunk and disorderly and these usually resulted in a fine. In 1877, for example, a 12 year old boy was summoned for stealing apples from a garden in Weston-superMare and was fined 10s and ordered to pay 2d for the value of the apples. Bear in mind this would have been a considerable amount of money in 1877. More serious offences such as theft, murder etc. were, until their abolition in 1971, dealt with in assize courts which were held in the main county towns and presided over by visiting judges from the higher courts based in London. The courts were held 4 times a year and, in Somerset

the midsummer assizes were held in Wells and Bridgwater in alternate years. The court in Wells was held in the Town Hall and the judge would have been met by the High Sherriff, taken to the cathedral for a service and then to the court to open the formal document which gave him authority to hold the court. He would then have been taken to the judges lodging in New Street and the actual court business would take place the following day. In many cases the offences committed, and the ensuing punishments, seem excessive by today’s standards. In 1860, for example, George Stitch was found guilty of stealing 50lb potatoes, valued at 1s 9d and was sentenced to 4 months imprisonment with hard labour in Taunton Gaol and in 1868 Fred Young a 22 year old labourer (and habitual offender) from Burnham was found guilty of stealing some bread and butter and sentenced to 7 years in prison. Rather surprisingly a girl found guilty of attempting to kill her father by poison in 1875 was also sentenced to 7 years imprisonment. I presume that then, as now, there are different views about the severity of sentence that people deserve. Music in Mind

Hutton Moor 50+ Sports Club

Mondays: This group takes place in the Masonic Hall, usually fortnightly, on Monday afternoons from 2.15 to 3.30. Memory problems can take away a person’s ability to relate to others and lead to feelings of isolation. Music in Mind is a safe space for people to come with their carers, have a cup of tea and a sociable chat and then enjoy an hour of music. We sing, play some percussion instruments, listen to music – sometimes this is a short live performance by volunteers who play/sing for us. Cheddar Short Mat Bowls Club Wednesdays: We have recently seen a surge of interest from persons of all ages joining our regular 2-hour indoor bowls sessions. We are keen to encourage more (18 plus welcome) to this healthy, social, and low-cost activity and we meet at Draycott Village Hall, being easy to access from the main A371 with loads of free parking. As a friendly and informal mixed group, all we ask is that you turn up in plenty of time to start bowling at 2:00pm on Wednesdays with your soft indoor flat-soled footwear. We have a free tea/coffee break at mid-point and continue to be ‘Covid Conscious’ whenever needed. Basic instructions and loan of bowling woods are free and we hope that after two or three sessions you would like to join us longer term. Art for Fun Wednesdays: Art for Fun is an informal group where people can get together, enjoy drawing and painting, have a cup of coffee and biscuits and chat to others. It is supported by Wedmore and Axbridge Community Health Fund so it is completely free to participants. Anyone can come along whether or not they have done any drawing or painting before, including the people who are convinced that they can’t! Materials are provided so there is no need to go out and buy equipment, which can be expensive. The time to buy your own is when you decide what you want to draw and what medium you want to use. There is no formal teaching but help is given where needed in any medium. The group meets on Wednesday mornings in the Church Rooms, Axbridge, from 9.30 am to 12.00 noon. There is no commitment to come every week, just join in when you can. This is an opportunity to try something new in a relaxed atmosphere. Method

When only the biggest burger will do, bite down on the Big Daddy burger! Two juicy beef burgers and loads of salad in a toasted bun – and we’ve thrown in a fried egg for good measure. Ingredients

Put the onion, garlic, beef and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl, season lightly and combine using your fingers. Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and shape them into burgers.

1 medium onion, finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, crushed 1kg lean beef mince (5% fat or less) 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Low-calorie cooking spray 4 x 60g wholemeal rolls 4 eggs Sliced tomato, lettuce leaves and sliced red onion, to serve 4 level tbsp reduced-salt-and-sugar tomato ketchup

Preheat your grill to high.

Spray the burgers with low-calorie cooking spray and grill for 10-12 minutes or until cooked through, turning halfway. Meanwhile, spray a non-stick frying pan with lowcalorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the eggs and fry to your liking. Split and toast the rolls, then fill with the tomato, lettuce, red onion, burgers and ketchup. Top with the eggs, season lightly and hold it all in place with a cocktail stick if needed. Serve hot with Slimming World chips and salad.

Is your internet supposed to be fast, but is actually slow? We see many posts on social media about people complaining about their internet connection. Often speed is quoted as not being as good as expected, and the provider is sometimes unfairly blamed for this. In our experience, there are many factors that people do not realise can affect their speeds. Firstly, the priority is getting a good speed into the house (to the router to be precise). If you have had broadband for many years, have you checked to see if a better package is available, either with your current provider, or possibly another provider? Having a modern router is also highly recommended. Full fibre is the best available connection but not all addresses can get it – yet. Also, not all providers offer full fibre broadband, so you really need to understand what is available to your address. For example, Plusnet currently do not offer full fibre broadband even if it is available in your road. Wi-fi is also a big problem in some properties due to factors such as internal walls, wood and other construction materials. Often, wi-fi will deteriorate with distance, so even one or two walls can substantially reduce the signal speed. Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re a burden We live in an aging society. There are far more people aged over 65 in the UK today compared to a generation ago, and it’s a fact of life that our needs change as we get older. Why then, do we sometimes feel like a burden if we ask for help in our later years? Age UK did some research into why people struggle in later life. They found that older people often feel excluded, or they exclude themselves, from the world around them. This was because of a few things, such as people feeling their lives didn’t hold as much worth; feeling that the benefits of making a change were outweighed by the effort; and not knowing how to change things. We all have bad days. But if you’re struggling every day with household tasks like paying bills, cooking or using the bathroom, or your emotions are getting the better of you, then it’s time to act. For support and guidance, call Age UK’s Advice Line any day of the year on 0800 678 1602 (8am to 7pm). When it comes to help in the home, it’s common for people only to seek help as a result of a fall, accident or near-miss. It’s also common for a spouse, carer or family member to take action on someone else’s behalf. If you need adaptations in your home, such as new grab rails, ramps, or a walk-in bath, it can be hard to know where to start. If money is a concern, did you know there’s a grant available for those with a qualifying condition? Talk to the council or search online for the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). Changes to your home don’t need to look unsightly either. Just because you’re adding grab rails or a raised toilet in your bathroom for example, doesn’t mean it will look like a hospital bathroom. You could see it as an opportunity to refresh and update one of the most important rooms of your house. If you’re unsure about which supplier to use for home adaptations, talk to family and friends about who they might know. If you can get online, have a look on Checkatrade.com for local suppliers who other people recommend. Usually, smaller companies are cheaper than the bigger brands. Be proactive. If you think you need some extra guidance or support, talk to someone. Think about what might help to make everyday life easier for you and seek it out. You’re not alone – there are so many people facing these same challenges. Asking for help is the first step towards making your life healthier, easier and happier.

A Somerset band who received international recognition last year are hoping to further build on their already impressive achievements Rileys Cove, an acoustic duo from Somerset, who wrote and released their debut single and EP ‘High’ early last year, saw the local pair receive the prestigious ISSA ‘International Band Single of the Year’ award for their original song ‘Without’. On 30th June the band released their second EP called ‘Moth’, which they’re hoping will achieve similar success to their debut EP, which has been played on radio stations around the world, including America, Australia and Ireland, as well as UK stations including a number of BBC stations. Wedmore Good Neighbours – How Can We Help You? The Wedmore Good Neighbours Group is now relatively well established and supporting a steady stream of people in the local community with a wide variety of “neighbourly” requests. As you might expect most calls continue to be from people needing transport for medical appointment or visiting a vaccination centre. Now that lockdown restrictions have eased we’re also providing lifts to local club and society meetings. Our volunteers are also available to help in a number of other ways. Maybe you need some light work doing in the garden? Or someone to do a few days dog walking if you are unwell? Got some rubbish that needs taking to the local recycling centre – we can probably manage that too. Perhaps you are unable to get out of the house for some reason but need something from the local shops or chemist? Volunteers can also help with writing letters and filling forms, including assisting with simple tasks that need completing online. Last but not least you might just want some company over a cuppa? The group can handle a wide variety of requests – but occasionally has to decline simply because the insurance policy does not cover every circumstance. A First For Cheddar Vale Lions Club Sunshine greeted campers and day visitors to the Club’s first Country Music & Campout Festival at Petruth Paddocks, Cheddar, courtesy of owner Jules Sayer. Lions Marcus and Tom fronted the event for the Club raising valuable funds for local good causes. Whilst attendance was unpredictable the Club is delighted with its success and look forward to expanding the event next year, as it is now recognised on the circuit of Country Music events across the country. The weekend kicked off with campers arriving on Friday afternoon. Music started at 12 pm until 6 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Artists performing were Daniel Beard, Ed Cox and Souls n Stone on Saturday with Paul Weston, Trey Jackson and Dusty

Road on the Sunday. Attendees were quick to get on their feet dancing and even encouraged some of our ‘fitter’ Lions to join in. Feedback has been extremely positive from being delighted with the location of the site and its facilities, together with the friendly atmosphere, so word of the event will spread. It all bodes well for next year when the Club plan for it to be bigger with more stalls plus displays already offered by Western Authentic Campout & Quick Draw Shootouts. The Club expresses its gratitude to owner Jules for welcoming our visitors to Petruth Paddocks and to Gregorys’ Transport for providing the Stage. INSURING YOUR BUSINESS When you run a business, you will no doubt recognise the need for insurance. It can provide compensation and peace of mind should things go wrong but can also represent a significant cost. There are many different types of insurance you need to consider. COMPULSORY INSURANCE: • Employers’ liability insurance is compulsory to cover your employees. By law you must have at least £5 million of cover and this must come from an authorised insurer, although a minimum of £10 million is now provided by most policies. You must display the certificate of insurance in the workplace. If your business is not a limited company, and you are the only employee or you only employ close family members, you do not need compulsory employers’ liability insurance. • Motor vehicles liability insurance is also compulsory and must cover third party insurance: this is the legal minimum. PUBLIC LIABILITY: Although strictly this is not compulsory you will almost certainly feel that you need cover under this heading. It covers claims for damages to third parties. PROPERTY AND THEFT: You can think about limiting cover to specific risks such as fire and flood or obtaining more general cover. Consider the level of cover you would need for the premises (if you own the building), equipment and stock. If you rent your premises, check that the landlord has the appropriate cover.

PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY: This is only likely to be necessary if you give advice which could make you liable. It protects against any loss suffered by your customers as a result of negligent advice. In some professions it is compulsory – examples being the law, accountancy and financial services. However, it is common in other sectors such as computer consultancy and publishing. BUSINESS INTERRUPTION: This covers compensation for lost profits and extra costs if your business is disrupted, due to say a fire. KEY MAN: A small business is often dependent on key members of staff. What would happen if they became seriously ill or died? SPECIALISED INSURANCE: A whole host of different policies cover a range of specialist situations – for example engineering insurance and computer policies. WORKING FROM HOME: If you are planning to start your new business from home then don’t assume that your normal household insurance will be enough. It will not usually cover business risks. It is possible to obtain special ‘working from home’ policies. SHOPPING AROUND: It may be stating the obvious but it is important to shop around to get the best deal. You should obtain several quotes and always be wary of cheap deals. A personal recommendation may be the best way to decide. Community Grants Awarded The latest round of grants have been awarded by Cheddar Parish Council. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the current climate, more applications were received than ever with 6 projects awarded a total of £5,000 to support the residents of Cheddar. Over two thirds of this year’s grant funding has been awarded to projects aimed at young people including; Cheddar Community Partnership, for their Wild Cheddar project providing an outdoor educational resource for the pupils at Cheddar First School. Girlguiding Cheddar, towards their much needed guide hut improvements. The Space, towards costs for Cheddar Youth Club over the forthcoming year and Cheddar Platoon; for the purchase of essential equipment for cadet training and activities. CHAFF was also awarded funds towards the annual Cheddar Arts Trail and the local Citizens Advice Bureau was granted repeat funding for their ongoing costs of supporting the people of Cheddar when they need it. The community grants are awarded by Cheddar Parish Council annually, the next application window will open again in January 2023. If you

Our local healthcare charity Wedmore and Axbridge Community Health Fund is a charity supporting the work of Axbridge & Wedmore Medical Practice. For almost 35 years, the fund has used monies donated to it to provide medical and patient support equipment for the Practice and its patients. It has provided equipment ranging from a blender for a person with eating difficulties to the hire of a stair life for a person at the end of life. It has recently supplied due to Covid 19 requirements locallymade scrubs for 18 members of staff and aprons/ gloves dispenser and clinical waste bins. Musings of an OvenGleamer The Commonwealth Games are starting later this month in Birmingham and Worl Class athletes will be competing for hopefully a Gold Medal. But what sort of Chef are you? Bronze Medal? (and about my level!) cooking is one of your life’s simple pleasures and your skill level is simple too. You’re great at using the microwave and can cope with a pan of boiling water for pasta and potatoes. You could cook a 3 course meal with a combi-microwave. Cheat with a ready-made prawn cocktails, then cook a chicken using the grill function and cook ‘steam in a bag’ vegetables to produce a Roast Dinner. For dessert “ping” chocolate sponge puddings with chocolate sauce to finish off…simples! More budding chefs (most of you) come in at least a Silver Medal standard. You’re great at using a hob and an oven with several pans boiling away on the hob top whilst a delicious joint is roasting away in the oven. You are classic multi-tasker with better time–management skills than me. My partner falls in this category – she does a mean Roast Beef, Yorkshire puddings and mountains of vegetables – all cooked to perfection and appearing on the table at the same time. For dessert she produces an apple pie out of oven with creamy custard. She then expects me, a professional oven cleaner, to clean our cooker? Does she not understand that it’s my day off? Gold Medal winners are you BBQ cookers! How anyone can produce an array of succulent steaks, juicy sausages and melt-in-the-mouth burgers as well as foil wrapped salmon from just a metal grid over some hot coals or gas, I’ll never know. You then to serve them with a selection of fresh salads and summer cocktails – a skill level way beyond my reach. My friends do this, invite me over and I can enjoy the fruits of their labours! Then with a messy BBQ, they phone me to clean it – fed and paid – Gold Medal for me on that one! So where do you fit into my medal parade – are you a bronze, silver or gold medal Chef?
