Obviously, we can install a dehumidifier or an extractor fan, but nature also provides her own dehumidifiers and air purifiers in the form of certain house plants. The best houseplants for mould-prone areas are those which are efficient at absorbing moisture through their leaves. Not all plants are equally efficient at this task so I’ve selected four of the best. Each offers a different aesthetic so there should be one that’s perfect for you. English ivy is a native plant and it’s a low-cost option. It removes airborne mould, but also other toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene. It grows best in bright, indirect sunlight so is perfect for northfacing rooms. You need to keep it out of reach of toddlers and pets because the leaves are toxic.
A friend recently asked me whether there are any plants which might help with the humidity and mould problem in the bathroom and back bedroom of her Victorian house. It’s a problem that actually affects many British households. Many of our homes are old, and in our damp climate humidity can rise pretty quickly in the winter when all the windows are closed, and the radiators are on. With increased

One of the advantages of a Peace Lily is that it tells you when its thirsty by drooping and that it’s getting too much light by turning yellow. They love high humidity areas with indirect sunlight like most bathrooms and are great at preventing mould. Like English ivy the leaves and flowers are toxic. Palms add a tropical touch to a room and will efficiently reduce humidity. There are many varieties and some of the best are the lady palm, dwarf palm and reed palm. Indirect light is best and keep the surface of the soil moist but not wet.

Peace Lilies remind me of the film Hot Fuzz. Sergeant Angel, played by Sean Pegg loved his Peace Lily, and he had good reason. Not only are they elegant plants with stunning white flowers, but research conducted by NASA found the Peace Lily to be one of the top indoor plants for air purification. The Snake Plant is a wonderfully architectural succulent. Its evergreen sword-shaped leaves grow upright, and almost resemble artificial foliage. standard 1.5 to 2 inch height isn’t always certain either as some places – admittedly few – contend that a ‘scone’ is a flattish biscuit, rather than the softer and higher floury confection that most are familiar with. The constitution of scones doesn’t restrict itself to the ‘fuller’ of ‘flat’ varieties, either. Debate still rumbles on about whether the addition of small pieces to the mix renders fruit scones as an entirely different beast altogether or simply a variant of the traditional type. Made with wholemeal or other flours? Even the pronunciation is a source of argument: ‘Scones’ as in ‘bones’ or ‘scons’ as in mons’?
The debate about whether a halved scone should have the jam or the cream applied first is a longrunning one. It is alleged that different counties favour one method over the other but that cannot be a cast-iron rule; depending as much on personal preference as anything else. Still more choices arise. Should the two halves then be placed together again and consumed in several (very big) mouthfuls? Or each half be eaten separately and in a more genteel manner? The

Good food and new beginnings Thoughts of New Years Eve conjures up for me images of food, celebration and new beginnings. By chance I was reminded recently that Samuel Pepys began writing his diary in January 1660 and was very fond of food and drink and of entertaining, making many references to this throughout his diary. It was written in a form of shorthand called “Zeiglographia” which had been invented by a man called Thomas Shelton in about 1626. It was widely used and Pepys had probably learned it when he attended Magdalene College, Cambridge as an undergraduate. Pepys was born in 1633, worked as a naval administrator and was responsible for the development of a professional naval service. His diary, which he wrote until 1703, when his eyesight started to fail, chronicles many of the events of the
time including the plague, the Great Fire of London as well as observations about some of the key figures of the era such as Sir Isaac Newton and Christopher Wren. It is also a valuable account of life and times for the social historian, including as it does, a mixture of personal entries about himself, his family and his health and tells us a lot about what was eaten and drunk at that time. On Christmas Day 1660, for example, he and his wife ate “a good shoulder of mutton and a chicken.” This was, however, simple fare compared to what was eaten when entertaining. On 26 January 1660, he writes about a family party for which “my wife had got ready a very fine dinner: viz. a dish of marrow-bones. A leg of mutton. A loin of veal. A dish of fowl, three pullets, and two dozen of larks, all in a dish. A great tart. A neat’s tongue. A dish of anchovies. A dish of prawns; and cheese.” I don’t suppose any of us will be sitting down to such a feast in 2022 but here’s hoping you all have a Happy New Year. Somerset Choral Society Wednesday 5th January: Somerset Choral Society is pleased to announce that their Spring Term programme of Communal Rehearsals begins on Wednesday 5th January; the programme and rehearsal conditions will be subject to the Government Covid Regulations prevailing at the time. ‘Music in Mind’: Making Connections Through Music Monday 10th and 24th January: At the Masonic Hall, Wedmore from 2:15pm - 3:30pm and it’s FREE! Do you know anyone who is living with memory problems or a sense of isolation who might be interested in coming along to Music in Mind? Once a fortnight in the Masonic Hall in Wedmore, we sing a variety of well-known songs together, (it is well-known now that the memory of song words is often retained when spoken language and memory are failing.) We also use percussion instruments to play together. The music offers everyone a chance to express themselves freely and they can’t ‘do it wrong’ so there is no pressure. We listen to a short piece of recorded music too and sometimes have the benefit of some extra ‘live music’ provided by friendly musicians who come to enrich the sessions. It is a friendly, social occasion, so of course we also have refreshments! Please do get in touch if you are interested or know someone you think would benefit. Usually, annual reports are in a format for your statutory accounts and they do not go into the detail you require for a successful business.
As a business owner you will have a vision of where you want your business to go, and a huge aspect of this vision needs to be the financial piece. This is where having accurate financial data at your fingertips, will enable you to more precisely plan your future. This data should be reviewed regularly, at least monthly, and can be in the form of reports and key performance indicators (KPI’s). Analysing the business profitability in detail and reviewing it monthly will ensure any issues or opportunities are promptly noticed and relevant action can be taken in ‘real-time’. The social side of the club is also in full swing - a highly successful Bingo and hot food evening was attended by almost fifty people in mid November whilst a Charity Coffee Morning and Craft Fair took place on 27th November. The intrepid gardening squad have been hard at work too - cutting back boundary hedges and trees and creating new rose and flower beds. Many thanks to the volunteers, who know who they are, but in particular many thanks to the sponsors of the rose beds. Bowls is a great way to keep active and meet people. The social aspect of the club is just as important to us as the competitive bowling. Good Neighbours – Ready to help in 2022 The Wedmore Good Neighbours Group is well established now and ready to help those in the local community who could do with a bit of extra help as we move into 2022. Most requests over the last twelve months have involved providing lifts to a medical appointment at a doctor’s surgery, hospital or vaccination centre. However, volunteers are also available to drive people to club meetings and other community social events in and around Wedmore. Volunteers can offer support in other ways too. Maybe you could use an extra pair of hands in your garden or need someone to walk your dog if you get sick? Perhaps you support a relative but are going away for a few days and need someone to look in on them? The group can handle a wide variety of requests – but occasionally has to decline simply because the insurance policy does not cover every circumstance. The service is operated by volunteers and has received some start-up funding from Sedgemoor District Council and the Somerset Community Foundation. It’s free to use but the group does have running costs – insurance, petrol expenses, as well as vetting and training of volunteers. So, if you do use the service and want to make a small donation, this is always very welcome! Know of someone in and around Wedmore who would welcome assistance of the kind the scheme provides? Cheddar Valley Foodbank This December we found ourselves making up almost 100 hampers for our clients. These were referred from the Health visitors, Hands of Change and the Village Agent. In order to make these up, we are dependent from the schools, churches, businesses and individuals donating food and money. Rotary groups , the Henry Budgett Trust, WI, and other charitable organisations have been so kind and generous. It’s been a hard year for so many people who struggle, on their own and with families Thank you for your support and for our amazing volunteers. We’d be lost without you. Axe Valley Men’s Shed add a notice board to Axbridge Square Those public-spirited gentlemen of the Axe Valley Men’s Shed have constructed a wooden notice board for Axbridge Square. Under the guidance of carpenter Terry Wite the intricately carved notice board is built out of recycled timber and will stand approximately where the former telephone box was located carrying information about the town’s heritage trails and other information of use for residents and visitors. Mayor Kate Browne unveiled the notice board on Saturday, November 6th, during the Farmers’ Market before a crowd of well-wishers and supporters and members of the heritage trail group and men’s shed. The Axe Valley Men’s Shed is based in Cheddar and attracts men of a certain age to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practise skills and enjoy making and mending. Unveiling of Axbridge’s heritage trail’s first blue plaque The first of what are expected to be as many as 40 blue plaques has been unveiled in Axbridge at the town hall. Mayor Kate Browne unveiled the plaque on Saturday, November 6th, to mark the town’s new heritage trails linked to QR codes to help illustrate the history of some Axbridge’s buildings and places. Positioned on the outside of the town hall the plaque explains how the civic building was constructed in 1830 on the site of the former Bear Inn. In its time the hall has been the site of a court room and indoor market, as well as the location of present day council meetings. Fundraising has taken place to secure cash to make the plaques led by Margaret Cowie who has secured contributions from organisations including the town’s chamber of commerce who chipped in £300.
