The patio is a great place to indulge your creativity.

Do you want a brilliant chaotic colour palate or a cool tranquil colour scheme, or maybe even monochrome calming greens in many textures of foliage. I think of patio pots like soft furnishings in the house…changing things up can transform the mood.

While containers are conventionally planted in autumn and late spring, they can actually be planted at any time of year, and I like to get a couple planted up in February so they can become really established and give me a running a start.

For me February marks the real beginning of the gardener’s year. Seed sowing starts in earnest, and we can begin to plan to bring the patio pots alive. As a gardener I do raise a lot of my plants from seeds in cold frames and greenhouses. But there is no right way to approach this. If you’re super busy and time in the garden is short, wait until late February and purchase fresh, well grown young plants from the

I use containers of all sizes but generally the large ones provide more impact. If they are to large and heavy to move easily, plant them with hardy bulbs or permanent shrubs or trees. You can then add seasonal geraniums and pansies etc around the core planting. Small, moveable containers can be planted with bright bulbs and specimen plants that can be brought to the front as they reach their peak with flowers or foliage. If you have a sheltered frostfree area for a cold frame or poly cover you can plant early, keep safe from the worst of the winter weather, and then bring them out when the frosts have finished.

‘Once you choose hope, anything is possible’ February is the border between winter and spring and I find it is a time for looking forward to the spring and new beginnings.

Already we may have seen new green shoots appearing from the earth and colourful bunches of snowdrops and crocuses. The shortest day is well behind us and, as each day passes, we can enjoy more and more daylight.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who died recently, never gave up on hope. After all the troubles of Apartheid in South Africa, he worked tirelessly with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in that country, bringing people together and giving them hope for the future. He said ‘Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness’.

Some will look forward with joyful anticipation to St. Valentine’s Day, although for others it may be a time of sadness, as they remember loved ones no longer with us. Lambing season has started and we may be fortunate enough to see and enjoy young lambs bouncing up and down in the fields. New life and new hope!

The Bible mentions the word ‘hope’ well over a hundred times and the verse I’d like to share with you can be found in St.Paul’s letter to the Romans Chapter 15. ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit’.

With all the hard times we have been through over the last couple of years it may be easy to give up on hope, but hope is the one thing that can help us to get through even the darkest of times. And there are signs of hope all around us if we just look for them.

As we emerge from the darkness of winter and look forward to the hope that spring brings, may we, like Desmond Tutu, ‘learn from yesterday, live for today and hope for tomorrow’. (a quote from Albert Einstein).

A final quote from the late Christopher Reeve, who portrayed Superman on film; ‘Once you choose hope, anything is possible’.

Shrove Tuesday and Pancakes Playing games was also frowned up during Lent and in many towns in England, games of football were played on Shrove Tuesday, a practice which probably dates back to the 12th century and which continued until the passing of the 1835 Highways Act which banned the playing of football on the public roads.

In an interesting precursor to the “trick and treat” custom on Halloween, children apparently went round houses on Shrove Tuesday demanding the following: We be come a-shroving, For a piece of pancake, Or a bite of bacon, Or a little truckle of cheese Of your own making

In Anglo-Saxon Britain, the 40 days before Easter, known as Lent, were fast days and on the Tuesday before this started, Christians would go to church to confess their sins. This became known as Shrove Tuesday derived from the word “shrive”, meaning to be absolved from sin. The “shriving” bell would be rung on this day to call people to church.

Apparently, they sometimes took shards of crockery or stones with them to throw at householders who refused to give them anything. Thankfully this custom seems to have died out!

Obviously before 40 days of fasting, various foodstuffs needed to be eaten up. Meats would be consumed on what was known as Collop Monday, a collop being a slice of meat, and on Tuesday eggs, butter and flour would be turned into a pancake.

Recipes for pancakes are mentioned in cookery books as far back as 1439, although the cooking of basic mixtures of ground grain and water was certainly done in Roman and Ancient Greek times and probably far earlier than that.

Of course, Lent didn’t only mean fasting, it also meant a time for quiet reflection and prayer and so medieval Britons made sure that they spent the few days before Lent enjoying themselves. One of the results of this was the beginning of pancake races which, according to legend, began in 1445 in Olney, Buckinghamshire when a woman reputedly heard the shriving bell when she was making pancakes and rushed to the church in her apron clutching her frying pan. Pancake races are still held today in many places.

The practice of tossing pancakes is also an old one and, in a book published in 1619 called Pasquil’s palinodia, it says “and every man and maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Panckes up for feare they burne”

Free Film Screening in Cheddar Offers Treats New and Old Saturday 12th February: A new Somerset film called Down by the River premieres in January, with ten free screenings countywide, with Cheddar’s screening on: Saturday 12th February, 7pm at the Cheddar Village Hall. The event will also include an entertaining and thought-provoking selection of Somerset archive films. The screening will last about two hours, with light refreshments available.

Down by the River is a documentary about the inspiring ways that communities across Somerset have responded to flooding. It was commissioned

RNLI Winscombe Folk Featuring Miranda Sykes Saturday 12th February: RNLI Winscombe’s first Folk Night for 2022 will be on Saturday 12th February in St James’ Church Hall (now the Church Centre), 52, Woodborough Road, Winscombe, BS25 1BA. Miranda Sykes is a well known Folk Singer who sings with “Show of Hands” but also performs in her own right as a solo singer. The hall will be arranged “Café-Style”, with tables of four or six, and audience members will be allocated seats at their tables so there will be TWO SESSIONS that evening to ensure that audience numbers in the hall are limited in each session: First Session – Doors will open at 6.30pm for an hour-long concert starting at 7.00pm prompt and ending at 8:00pm. The hall will be cleared and sanitised ready for the second performance.

Second Session – Doors will open at 8:30pm for the second concert that will commence at 9.00pm and end at 10.00pm, allowing the hall to be cleared and sanitised after the performance.

A new state of the art surgery for Wedmore as part of the Axbridge and Wedmore Medical Practice Friday 18th and Saturday 19th February: Wedmore and Axbridge Community Health Fund is a charity supporting the work of the Axbridge & Wedmore GP Practice and the health and wellbeing of patients within the Practice area. Following the closure of The Wedmore Ambulance Trust (a local health charity), the Fund has recently received more than £370,000 from the sale of land in Wedmore. This donation has led the Fund to consider the best long-term value for such a substantial legacy.

The Fund has decided to investigate the feasibility of building a state-of-the-art surgery for the medical practice in Wedmore. The viability of the project now depends on the donation of a suitable plot of land, free of charge, within Wedmore, together with public fund raising to bolster the original legacy.

So, to seek public feedback on our outline plans, the Fund will be staging an Exhibition in Wedmore Village Hall as part of the Wedmore Parish Council’s Open Day – “Wedmore Have Your Say” on Friday 18th February (2 – 7pm) and Saturday 19th February (9.30am – 1pm). This will also be an opportunity for any potential donors of land within Wedmore to come forward. The Fund also sees this project as being a way to involve local volunteer expertise to bring this exciting project to fruition.

The Fund is determined that patients should have access to a first-class medical practice. In order to do so, the Charity will need to raise substantially more funds. The project has received the support of Wedmore Parish Council who have reserved £100k of Community Infrastructure Levy funds to support this project. In addition, a probable donation target of around £500,000 will be required. A fundraising programme will be developed to be ready once outline Planning Approval has been achieved.

Whether to upgrade or replace your computer – considering the recent release of Windows 11 Is your computer over 5 years old? Sooner or later, older computers are expected to run into issues.

There are recommended steps that can be taken to slow down the degeneration of computer health, such as routine servicing and decent antivirus protection. Regular backups are also worth performing to protect from sudden data loss. On average, computers older than 5 years are more expected to produce issues, and the question of upgrading or replacing often poses a conundrum for people.

A common error we see is the assumption a slow or problematic computer is non-repairable, which concludes a new replacement computer as the sole resolution. In such scenarios, people often struggle on for months with problems, or simply stop using the computer altogether, because a replacement is not an affordable option. We want to let readers know that more often than not, computers with corruption, slowness, freezing, and many other issues, are repairable at a cost much cheaper than a new computer. For example, the common issue of extreme slowness is often resolved in an hour’s work replacing one internal component.

However, with the recent release of Windows 11, there are new hardware requirements to meet. These requirements play a delicate role in the evaluation of whether investment in repairing or upgrading older computers is worthwhile. Investing in an old computer then being forbidden from upgrading Windows is not ideal. The “PC Health Check” found in the Windows 10 start menu list provides a quick way to tell if your hardware supports the latest Windows iteration. If not, a new computer becomes more justifiable over the upgrade route.

OvenGleamers Top Tips for Loving Your Cooker This February 1. Invest in a non-stick oven liner. They help to catch all of those annoying drips that stick to the bottom of your cooker, which later can become a burnt-on mess. Easy to wash or pop in the dishwasher.

2. Do not use harsh chemicals inside your cooker. Instead, try a safer homemade option using items found around your household. For an all-purpose cleaner and deodorizer, mix together 4 tablespoons baking soda with 1 litre warm water.

3. Get the wiping habit! Wipe away any spillages immediately with a damp cloth. Don’t give the mess a chance to stay. I know this sounds easy and as hard as you try it is a chore, the oven can still be hot and some of the stuff just doesn’t want to come off but stick with it. Get a microfibre cloth and use it wet with washing-up solution.

4. Cover your roast! You need to stop the grease spitting all over your lovely clean oven. To do this just put a lid on your roast tin or cover with foil or try a roasting bag. This way the inside of your oven and your grill (if its inside your oven) won’t become completely coated in grease when you are cooking. This grease, if left in the oven, becomes burnt on carbon in the long term and is very difficult to get off.

5. Get a professional in to Gleam It! If you really can’t get all the dirt and grime out of your oven yourself then maybe call and book someone that can. A newly cleaned cooker will be sparkling and clean and if you follow our other tips you will keep it clean, won’t you?

New Catholic Community Hall in Tweentown, Cheddar - Official Opening Saturday 19th February: The official opening of the new Cheddar Catholic Community Hall is scheduled for Saturday 19th February. We will be inviting donors, representatives of the design and building teams and hall users to a ceremony with a service of Mass celebrated by Monsignor Bernard Massey, representing the Bishop of Clifton. There will also be an unveiling of a plaque, followed by a display in the main hall, tours of the building and a buffet lunch.

The new Catholic Community Hall opened in late November, and it is now fully functioning, taking groups from the area, who are enjoying the excellent facilities we are able to offer.

We have a large hall suitable for large groups, choirs and parties, and a smaller, more intimate room, suitable for meetings, film shows and smaller groups. We also have full disability access, and have excellent washing facilities and gel dispensers, so we are fully Covid compliant. The course will consist of six sessions on Friday evenings, 7:00pm for approximately two hours, with a break during each evening for refreshments. Isle Of Wedmore Bowls Club 2021 has been a difficult year for the club with Covid wiping out the first three months of the indoor season back in January through to March.

The freedom to play outdoors bowls from May to the end of September was a great boost even though some fixtures were cancelled due to Covid issues. A spring recruitment drive followed and was considered a great success with many new members welcomed to the club. After a really enjoyable summer outdoors we were able to start the new indoor season in September and at time of writing we have now reached the mid point of the schedule, otherwise known as the Xmas break. All the daily indoor leagues are being keenly contested and it is pleasing to report the standard of bowls is good. Our Sunday morning indoor Umbrella league for new bowlers has proved very successful.

There is a full programme of matches versus other local clubs arranged up to the end of the indoor season on March 31st but unfortunately our interest in the Denny Cup came to an end at the

hands of rivals St Andrews but at least we can now concentrate our competitive effort on the Somerset county league (as they say!) .

The first rounds of the various internal competitions have now been completed and the tension builds through the rounds leading up to finals weekend in March. Meanwhile we look forward to hosting the stars of the future, the Somerset County Under 25s early in the year.

Despite all that Covid has thrown at us this year the club has enjoyed a rejuvenated social programme with numerous events held over the summer and autumn. Latterly our Coffee and Craft morning raised over £770 for our club charity, The Children’s Hospice South West. A huge thank you to the organising team, those who contributed and those who attended and purchased the great products on offer.

Bowls is great way to maintain a level of fitness as well as its marvellous social benefits. If you would like to try your hand at bowls and enjoy some of the finest indoor and outdoor facilities in Somerset then the Isle of Wedmore Bowls club would love to welcome you. We even offer free coaching and advice for new starters.

Surviving Winter appeal supporting local older people raises incredible £100k in under a month Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) is thrilled to announce that, following the appeal launch at the end of November, the 2021/22 Surviving Winter appeal has already raised a phenomenal £100,000 - thanks to the incredible generosity of local donors.
