Making a Splash With the increasing cost of living and the consequent necessity to watch the pennies, many of you might be cancelling holidays away in favour of staying local.

What a shame, therefore, that we can’t turn back the clock to the inter-war period; the heyday for outdoor swimming pools.

Swimming had been a fashionable sport since the end of the 19th century and by the inter-war period was increasingly popular amongst women, being given a boost in 1926 when the American, Gertrude Ederle, became the first woman to swim the Channel, setting a time of 14 hours that beat the current record by two hours.

The popularity of swimming combined with the huge increase in the number of holiday makers flocking to seaside resorts led to many local councils building large new pools called lidos, in order to attract summer visitors and it was considered as essential for a resort to have one as it had been to have a pier at the turn of the century.

By the end of the thirties many towns had built a lido, including Weston-super-Mare in 1938. Most of them had areas for sunbathing, fountains, slides, changing rooms and cafes as well as an engine house to keep the water clean. One of the distinguishing features of the pool at Weston was the art-deco diving platform to which boards at varying heights were mounted. Apparently, a team of professional divers performed “acrobatic feats” there every afternoon during the summer attracting large audiences.

It might seem odd to have built pools right next to the sea but this had a lot to do with the fact that many seaside towns still had regulations governing sea-bathing. Outdated views on modesty meant that it was still common for some councils to insist that bathers had to pay to use bathing huts to change in. It was also quite common for council officials to forbid bathing when the weather was too “rough.” It was much easier, therefore, to use a nice clean swimming pool which was not dependent on weather or tides and was free from jellyfish!

Three Top Summer Kitchen Tips from Graeme Robertson, OvenGleamers 1. Tear basil rather than cutting it?

Chefs often say that you must tear basil, rather than cut it with a knife, to get the best flavour. Nope. The flavours in basil are primarily contained within the cells of the leaf. If you tear it, it tends to come apart between the cells but if you cut the leaf, you will break open the cells releasing the flavour. This makes the most difference when you are using the basil raw eg in a tomato salad.

Best to wash the basil, pat dry with paper towels, and remove the leaves from the stem. Stack several leaves together and roll into a cylinder, then cut crossways into thin strips.

2. Should I use foil on the base of my Oven?

Many people line their grill pan or the bottom of the oven with aluminum foil to keep their cookers cleaner. This becomes heavily coated in grease and smells revolting! But it actually damages the enamel in the grill pan and on the base of the oven. The foil creates a superheating effect by reflecting the heat back onto the base of the oven or grill pan which then causes enamel damage.

I recommend using an oven liner made from PTFE with a non-stick coating. This will catch any food drips keeping the bottom of the oven/grill pan clean. Remember to take the oven liner out regularly and wash it in warm soapy water.

3 “Hot pan - cold oil - prevents sticking” Is this mantra really the best way to prevent food from sticking to the pan when sautéing or stir-frying.

The idea is that you heat up the pan first then add the cold oil and almost immediately add the food and that will stop it sticking. What you really want is a “hot pan, hot oil”. When you add cold oil, it heats up almost instantly when added to the hot pan – giving you “hot pan, hot oil”. You get the same results if you heat the oil along with the pan so take your pick – they both work!

Royal Air Forces Association Midsomerset Branch – Future Programme

There will be three morning walks each day, including a long walk for keen types, with easier walks too. Our afternoon Family Walks are short and slow - leisure walking for all ages!

Royal Air Forces MidSomerset Branch commemorated the 40th Anniversary of the end of the Falklands War at a Branch Meeting at the Street Inn when three members recounted their personal experiences of involvement in the war effort. On July 4th, the Branch held its Summer Social Barbecue also at the Street Inn. The programme for 2022 will continue in the autumn as follows:

All are invited. There’s no need to be a Rambler, no booking and it’s free. All walks have a break. Just wear suitable footwear, bring a drink and a snack ( or two!) and a hat.

Monday 5th September: Branch Late Summer Lunch 12:15pm for 12:45pm at Wells Golf Club, Blackheath Lane, Wells, BA5 3DS. This will also be a centenary celebration of a Branch Member.

Sunday 18th September: Branch Battle of Britain Service – By kind permission of the Rector of the Shepton Mallet Benefice, the Branch will sponsor a Service at 1030 at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Shepton Mallet to commemorate the Battle of Britain followed by wreath-laying at the town Cenotaph.

Saturday 27th - Sunday 29th August: It’s not long now to the August Bank Holiday weekend - it could be a scorcher or a washout, who knows? What is certain (Covid permitting) is that Mendip Ramblers will host their 3 day Walking Festival at Stratton-onthe-Fosse Village hall from 27th - 29th August 2022.

Axbridge Pageant Saturday 27th - Monday 29th August: Held every ten years the Axbridge Pageant is a 17-scene community drama depicting the town’s long history staged entirely by volunteers. This year it will run daily over the August Bank Holiday at 3:00pm from Saturday 27th August to Monday 29th August.

Founded in 1967 the two hour or more drama is played out in the town’s historic square in Somerset in front of hundreds of spectators seated in temporary stands. Winscombe Village Show Saturday 10th September: The new Winscombe Village Show will take place on Saturday, 10th September at 1.30 - 4pm at the Community Centre in Sandford Road. This is the relaunch of the former much loved Michaelmas Fair. Cheddar Valley Indoor Bowls Club Wednesdays: Our well-established short mat, indoor-only Bowls Club continues to regularly meet at the Draycott Village Hall on the main A371 road on Wednesday afternoons. Plenty of free parking and we may even be able to arrange a free home pickup (depending on location) plus the bus stop at Draycott is only a short walk away. When is the time to replace an ageing computer?

We often get asked the question “How long will a computer last?” – generally the life of a computer seems to range from about 3 years to 10 years depending on the quality of components and how it is used. External factors can also influence this, such as power surges and even drink spillages. One way to extend the life of a computer is to replace ageing or slow parts, but due to the pace of improving technology, sometimes replacement is the best long term solution.

It is wise and much safer to carry out planned computer replacements instead of waiting until they break down and stop functioning from old age, which makes replacing much harder, and risks data loss. When a less old computer needs repair, a replacement can still be the best option, such as when repair costs meet or exceed the cost of a new computer. A troublesome computer should be looked at by an experienced engineer who can help determine the best cost-effective way forward.

With the release of Windows 11 and its strict hardware requirements, most computers older than 3 years cannot upgrade, so this becomes another factor which can make a new computer the better option over investing in repairs. On this note, we recommend all computers run Windows 11 as soon as possible. A computer will also run healthier for longer when free from infections, so it is important to ensure a secure, paid antivirus solution is installed. Never run a free antivirus as they fail to provide adequate protection.

With household budgets more stretched than ever, HMC Funding have been looking at what this means for people looking to re-mortgage to consolidate loans and credit cards to make their monthly outgoings more manageable but currently have a fixed rate with redemption charges.

Homeowner loans, also known as second charge mortgages or secured loans, often used to reorganise personal finances and can allow customers to consolidate existing debt into easy-to-manage monthly payments.

The different ways to consolidate debt, the most common method is to take out a debt consolidation loan. If you just want to consolidate credit card debts, you could consider a balance transfer credit card where multiple balances are transferred onto one credit card, usually with an introductory interest rate of 0%. There may be a balance transfer fee to pay on each balance transferred. Another way to consolidate debt is to Remortgage and borrow extra to pay off other debts or if you are tied into a product a second charge mortgage may be your option.

Case Study; Customer was spending £945 per month on a car loan of £10,000 and three credit cards, paying the minimum payment per month which totalled £25,000 so they were looking for a loan of £35,000 for debt consolidation and wanted £5000 cash out for some home improvements.

Loan amount £40,000; Monthly repayment £416.48; Interest Rate 4.6% fixed for 2 years; Term 10 years.

This saved the customer £528.52 per month in monthly outgoings.

Representative Example: Borrowing of £40,000, plus £1,095 lender fee, totalling £41,095, over 200 months on a variable product with an initial borrowing rate of 4.8%. There would be 200 monthly instalments of £298.90. Total amount payable £59,875, made up of: Mortgage Amount £40,000, Interest £18,685, Lender fee £1,095, Exit Fee £95. Overall cost for comparison purposes 5.3% APRC. Please be advised that any interest rate fluctuations, during the life of the mortgage contract, will affect the total amount repayable.

In the W & D Cup there were spectacular wins over Clarence Gold and Clevedon Prom. Cheddar Vale Lions Club have a Quacking Good Event Thanks to Hanson’s Quarry, that provided the funds to purchase 1,000 new ducks, Cheddar Vale Lions Club was able to go ahead with their annual duck race this year.

Following popular demand from our local community, and visitors to Cheddar Gorge, the Club decided to hold the annual Duck Races on the Saturday of the Jubilee Bank Holiday. The tickets went on sale, via members and our website, in May up until the day when 1,000 ducks were released into the water for each race. The Cheddar Army Cadets plus their leaders came along to help us on the day and they were amazing. They helped clear the weed from the water, set up the finish line and even did the litter picking during and at the end of the event. The Club really appreciated their help and commitment as without them it would have been a struggle to start on time.

As previous years, the Club decided that a major part of the funds raised at least £1,500 plus the donations, would be presented to Children’s Hospice SW and the remainder to go towards our work in the community.

The event was a huge success and the ticket selling beforehand went exceptionally well, helping us to sell almost 2,000 tickets with fantastic support from our community and visitors. Together with some generous donations received, we raised just over £2, 000! Huge thanks must go to the amazing crowd that turned out for the event which was also live streamed onto our Facebook page.

In 2023, it is hoped to run the Duck Races on the August Bank Holiday Monday.

Axbridge Royal British Legion On June 14th at 7:00pm the Axbridge Royal British Legion branch met at the War Memorial in Axbridge. A short Wreath laying ceremony took place to Commemorate the 40 Years Anniversary of the end of the Falkland War. It was good to see the Axbridge Sea Cadets back in Axbridge and parade round the Square before attending the ceremony. It is hoped it won’t be too long before they are able to meet back in Axbridge but in the meantime they are continuing to meet but in Winscombe.

Party on 16th June. The weather was ‘on side’ and produced the hottest day of the year, so far. A fantastic day was enjoyed by around 150 members in the glorious sunshine. There was a trio of musicians playing to add to the atmosphere and the ladies of the u3a choir gave a rendition of 50’s era popular songs. Memorabilia from throughout the Queen’s reign, loaned by various members, was on display and an ‘appropriately decorated’ cake competition was held, producing some very impressive (and delicious) creations! The professional caterers provided a large variety of tasty treats for lunch, with hot, or cold soft drinks and the arrival of the ice cream van completed this superb, free day of enjoyment.

New Branch Surgery in Wedmore Cheddar Valley u3a Jubilee Garden Party Making the most of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations and the coincidence of the 40th anniversary of the start of u3a in the UK, Cheddar Valley group held a Garden

Thanks to all of you who visited the surgery consultation event on the 27th and 28th May. Around 250 people attended and, of those who expressed a view, 89% were in favour of the principle of a new surgery.

Views on the 3 sites were more mixed.

West of Lascot Hill: 80% of the people who commented on this site opposed it. When combined with the lack of information from the landowner / housebuilder, we feel this site should be discounted.

Worthington Woods: Views on this site were more evenly balanced, but the exceptional infrastructure costs, the work undertaken by the Green Group on site and the odour objection from Wessex Water count against this as a realistic site. The Doctors are particularly concerned at the odour issue.

Heath House Road: This site attracted the most comments (101) and, of these, over 67% were in favour. However, we acknowledge the problems which need to be addressed such as vehicle and pedestrian access, flooding and the safe cycling route to Sexey’s School.

We also asked whether there were any additional sites which we had not considered. Whilst seven sites were put forward, none were proposed by the landowner. FRAUD AND HOW TO SPOT IT – A TEN STEP GUIDE With the current pressures we are facing from a slow economy, challenges associated with difficulties in renewing finance, achieving targets, or even simply paying suppliers bills, it becomes easy to see that the risk of fraud for all sizes of businesses has increased significantly.

• Always retain a degree of control over the key accounting functions of your business. Don’t pre-sign blank cheques and ensure that the corresponding invoices are presented with the cheques.

Given the wide range of fraud that could be committed, what steps can you take to minimise the risk of fraud being perpetrated within your organisation? Here are our top ten tips for detecting and preventing fraud.

• Watch out for employees who are overly protective of their role or disaffected and might be bearing a grudge.

• Begin by recruiting the right people, permanent and temporary, to work in your organisation. Make sure that you check out references properly, particularly if they are to work in key areas.

• Ensure that you have a clear policy that fraud will not be tolerated and ensure that this is communicated to all staff.

• Consider which areas of your organisation could be at risk, then plan and implement appropriate defences.

Effective controls include: Segregating duties; Supervision and review; Arithmetical checks; Accounting comparisons; Authorisation and approval; Physical controls and counts.

• Wherever possible don’t have only one person who is responsible for controlling an entire area of the business, including the accounting function but will also include other key areas such as ordering goods, stock control and despatch.

• Be on the lookout for unusual requests from staff involved in the accounting function.

• Watch out for notable changes in cashflow when an employee is away from the office, on holiday for example.

Similarly, be aware of employees who never take their holiday.

• Prepare budgets and monthly management accounts and compare these against your actual results so that you are aware of variances. Taking prompt investigative action where variances arise could make all the difference by closing the window of opportunity afforded to fraudsters.

• Where a fraudster is caught, make sure that appropriate action is taken and learn from the experience.

Cross Village Hall Report There has been lots going on since the last AGM including an almost new committee.

We now have a facility to show films, with a fixed projector, a remote control, a microphone and a screen, plus Wi-Fi and the internet. There are 4 new speakers that provide excellent sounds and as we have blue tooth, capable of streaming.

We look forward to making our Village a more interesting and exciting place.

During lockdown many changes and ideas were formed to improve life socially. Headed by Lorraine and Jane a new coffee morning was born, meeting once a month. There are lovely cakes and biscuits and excellent coffee. Donations are requested and any profit are given to a charity.

As well as this the hall seems to have really had an update with now excellent central heating, a new dish washer and a new stove (oven, grill and hob).

There are local activities and some classes.

Wanted - Good Neighbours The number of people calling on the Wedmore Good Neighbours Group for help and support has been growing steadily – so now we could use a few more volunteers to bolster the existing team.

What does being a volunteer involve?

You’ll be added to the co-ordinators’ email list and will see what requests for help have been received and posted by them. If you feel you’d like to donate the time to fulfil that request then you simply let the co-ordinator know. They will provide you with the contact details of the person asking for help and you then get in touch with them to make the necessary arrangement.

What kind of requests for help does The Wedmore Good Neighbours Group accept?

• Providing lifts – anything from medical appointments to shopping/collecting prescriptions, attending community social events/church to visiting friends/family in hospital • Home visits – providing company over a cuppa to light gardening/ironing/washing, dog walking to help with filling in forms Once you have become a volunteer there’s no obligation to accept any tasks – you just pick the ones that you feel you’d like to pick up. The ‘Plenty Thirst’ Wedmore Real Ale Festival (9th – 11th September 2022) It’s only a couple of months until we open the doors to this year’s 21st festival, which will be returning to the glorious Glebe Field, Manor Lane, Wedmore, BS28 4EQ. Remember it is free to enter until 6pm, when entrance charges will apply.

Headline live music will be provided by one of our popular local bands, One For The Road, who will be performing on Friday evening. In keeping with this year’s jubilee theme, Queen Rocks will be belting out hit after hit for us all to get up and dance to on Saturday evening. So, as this year’s theme will be The Unofficial Queen’s Jubilee, your fancy dress options are Queen, the Royal Family or anything Jubilee!

There will also be a silent disco on Sat afternoon between 3 and 5pm, so the kids can enjoy themselves too.

Food will be available throughout the festival, and, in addition to over 100 barrels of ale, craft beer and cider on tap as well as a selection of wine and a gin bar.

Pickled Peaches Ingredients: 1.2kg just ripe but still firm peaches (about 10) Zest and juice from an unwaxed lemon.

1 litre white wine vinegar 550g granulated sugar 6 peppercorns (pink is nice but black or green will be fine) 3 thin ginger slices (minus the skin) 4 cloves 1 cinnamon stick ½ tsp yellow mustard seeds 1 x large jar (1.5 litres) or two smaller ones Method: Prepare the peaches Scrub the jar in warm soapy water, rinse it thoroughly, then and put it in a low oven to dry it and keep it warm.

Take each peach and cut a small cross in the skin at the base then plunge it into boiling water for 10 seconds. Remove and pop them straight into a bowl of iced water. This process makes the skins easy to remove.

Cut each peach half, remove the stones, and toss the fruit in lemon juice.

Don’t use aluminium pans when pickling because the vinegar reacts with the aluminium.

Heat the ingredients over a low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Increase the heat and bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 minutes. Lower the heat again, add the peaches and simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes. The fruit should be just soft when pierced with a sharp knife.

Use a slotted spoon to gently lower the peaches into the warm jar, then simmer the pickling liquid a little longer until it becomes syrupy. Pour it over the peaches to cover and seal the jar. I like to leave the spices in the jar, but you can strain the liquid if you prefer.

These peaches are ready to eat after a few hours but if you can leave them for six weeks they are sublime. They go really well with cheese or ham and bread for a simple summer supper. Keep refrigerated once opened, but like ice cream the flavour is best if you allow them to come to room temperature before serving.
