Walk this Way!
The benefits of walking for exercise
Spring is in the air, so put at spring in your step too by getting out in the fresh air for a walk. Walking is one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise as well as being FREE, good for these financially difficult times.
Improves Physical Health: Walking is lowimpact exercise that increases your heart rate, strengthens your muscles, and helps to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
Enhances Mood: Walking releases endorphins, which are natural feel-good chemicals that improve your mood and help to reduce anxiety and depression. Walking outdoors in nature is particularly beneficial, as studies have shown that exposure to green spaces enhances the mental health benefits.
Increases Energy Levels: Walking helps to boost your energy levels and reduce fatigue. Regular walking can improve the quality of your sleep, increase your metabolism, and reduce sluggishness.
Boosts Cognitive Function: Walking has been proven help to improve cognitive function, including memory and attention span. Regular walking has even been linked to a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Encourages Social Interaction: Walking with a group is social activity that encourages interaction with others. Walking with friends, family, or a regular walking group helps to increase motivation, accountability, and make walking a more enjoyable experience.
There are no downsides to walking. It’s kinder on the knees than running, requires no specialist equipment other than sturdy shoes and can be done at any time convenient for you, so, take a step towards better physical and mental health and start walking today!

Does your computer need an MOT and your devices updating? Have you allowed somebody to work on your computer remotely after a random phone call?
We like to use the term “MOT” in relation to computers. Whilst not a legal requirement, it is worth having your equipment checked once a year. Over time, issues tend to occur, but sometimes don’t show themselves, so typically computers tend to get slower and also things happen which can leave the computer at risk.
If you have not had a computer professional check your equipment for over a year, it is worth booking in a service visit. We understand that your computer may not have any visible issues, but things can simmer in the background, so it’s worth having things checked before it is too late. We often get calls saying that the computer will not switch on and that it has been working fine up until now. Computers tend to go wrong without any warning, but with the right measures, this likelihood can be greatly reduced.
We offer a service where “we come to you” so no need to disconnect equipment. Simply book us in, and we will visit and give you honest advice on any requirements which will ensure that your system is safe and the computer continues to work reliably. We can also check your phones and tablets to make sure all is well.
Have you ever had a phone call from “Microsoft”, or similar, whereby somebody remotely works on your computer. Companies like Microsoft / Apple / BT / Openreach and so on would never cold call and ask to remote control your computer.
If this has happened to you, please get in touch as it is likely that your computer may have been compromised, even if the phone call seemed very plausible. If there is a text file on your desktop with contact details, this is often a sign that a scam remote session has happened. You would have been given false information, and possibly charged a fee, but unfortunately, this is not genuine. We can undo the “work” that these scammers created and make the machine safe again.

How incontinence can affect mental health
Here at Arelle, we know from speaking with our customers how incontinence can directly affect mental health – whether that’s the daily anxiety of managing incontinence in public or the more profound psychological and emotional effects of incontinence which can impact every aspect of life. Some of the indicators we regularly come across include:
– feelings of embarrassment and worry.
– withdrawal from activities and social plans.
– mood swings.
– difficulties in sleeping, or irregular sleep routines.
– problems with relationships or job performance. So if any of these signs are familiar to you, or someone you know, there are several things you can do to find help:
– Contact a support organisation like Bladder Health UK, Bladder and Bowel UK or Bladder and Bowel Community. Apart from a wide range of resources and helpful information, they often offer services such as local support groups and ‘phone-pals’, as well as online and telephone support.
– Get a ‘Just Can’t Wait’ card, which is recognised and supported by many retail and service
organisations, giving you access to toilets not normally available to the general public.
– If you are disabled, you can get a Radar Key which offers independent access to many locked public toilets around the country.
– Connect with a social media support group –such as the Facebook group coordinated by the Bladder and Bowel Community – it can help to know that others are going through the same thing.
– Talk to your GP, who can advise and refer you to specialist services if required, and a practice nurse can give you practical advice on how to manage incontinence.
– Talk to those you trust. Getting some emotional support from those around you is crucial if you are struggling.
And should you need advice about the products to help you manage any continence issues, please do contact us. Unlike many other suppliers, we have over 20 years of experience to talk you through all your product options and help you find solutions to suit you, and ultimately help improve your quality of life.

Wool or manmade fibre? That is usually the first thing to decide when you are buying new carpet
Wool has been used for carpets and rugs for centuries. It is hard wearing, can be cleaned repeatedly and keeps its appearance longer than manmade fibres. To keep the costs of wool carpet down, small amounts of manmade fibre were added to the mix, but they found that the wool mix carpets actually performed better than 100% wool ones. The standard mix is 80% wool and 20% man-made fibre – hence the well-known 80:20 wool carpet. Polypropylene is the most common addition, nylon is mostly used in the more expensive carpets and polyester gives a softer finish.
The two main advantages of carpets made 100% from synthetic yarns, is firstly, they are cheaper, and secondly, they are inherently stain resistant. Polypropylene carpets in particular can be bleach-cleaned, so food stains, like red wine and coffee, can be bleached out. This is because the dye is added to the raw material when it is still liquid and before it is turned into yarn. This is called ‘solution-dyeing’ and it makes it impossible to bleach out the colour because it is an integral part of the yarn – but be careful, because too much bleach can damage the backing of the carpet if it is allowed to soak in, and don’t use too strong a solution.
Nylon carpets can’t usually be bleached. This is because the yarn isn’t commonly solution-dyed, so the dye is only on the outside of the fibre. Solution-dyed nylon yarn is available but it is mostly used for better commercial or office carpet. So if you re-carpet an office, make sure you ask what the yarn is made of.
And finally, some people buy carpets made from synthetic yarns because they are moth resistant. Many wool carpets are now moth-proofed and carry guarantees but it seems a case of once bitten … people who have had a moth problem, usually replace their wool carpets with synthetic.

Fast, natural healing for Achilles tendonitis
“I believe the PRP treatment to be a success and would absolutely recommend it”
Last summer, Clive Harper suffered a badly torn Achilles tendon. “I was in pain, couldn’t walk properly and had to stop playing golf,” explains Clive, 72, who is retired and lives in Congresbury. “I’d previously had the same condition in my other foot, which led to corrective surgery followed by three months in a surgical boot. I definitely didn’t want to repeat that experience!
“Then, through personal referral, I found osteopath Matthew Jackson. He recognised that the damage to the Achilles was severe –a later scan showed five tendon tears - and suggested PRP treatment. I’d never heard of it and at first I wondered, well if this is so good, why is it not readily available on the NHS? Then I did more research and realised it was an entirely logical approach, and accessible without waiting, so I decided to give it a try.”
Matthew explains, “PRP - Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy - is a nonsurgical, all-natural way to enhance healing. The patient’s own blood is drawn and put into a centrifuge machine, which spins it to concentrate plasma in the platelets. This activated platelet concentration is then injected back into the body at the site of injury. Growth factors are released that regenerate damaged tissue and accelerate healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints.
“PRP therapy has actually been proven in clinical trials within the NHS and is approved by NICE, the UK regulatory body.”
Clive had three or four injections over time into the lower leg. “The injections can be painful but I believe the treatment to be a success, with faster recovery than just resting and exercises. I’m playing golf normally now and can walk 7 or 8 miles in a day. The tendon does get sore but soon recovers. I would definitely recommend the clinic and PRP treatment.”

Mistakes to avoid when reviewing your mortgage
Your mortgage is probably the biggest financial commitment you’ll make so it’s really important to try and do things right. Even small mistakes could cost you hundreds if not thousands of pounds. Here we try to highlight the top 4 common mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Going onto your lenders Standard Variable Rate (SVR).
When your mortgage deal comes to an end, your lender will usually move you onto their SVR. This rate is generally higher and your monthly payments will increase. For example, £200,000 over 20 years on a rate of 2.49% would cost you £896.23 per month. By not reviewing your mortgage and being put onto the SVR at a rate of 6.99% your monthly payment would increase to £1515.98 per month. The average 2-year fixed rate (Feb23) is currently 5.14% so a clear saving to be made. To avoid moving onto your lenders SVR it is a good idea to start looking up to 6 months in advance and get a good rate locked in.
2. Underestimating associated costs with a purchase or remortgage. A common mistake is to focus only at the interest rate but you should also consider other factors such as lender fees, valuation costs and Solicitor’s costs. Each lender will have different costs some may be included for free whilst others you will have to pay for upfront. Also if you have any plans to move in the near future ensuring your mortgage is portable becomes an important factor.
3. Not Shopping around for the right deal.
Lenders will generally get in touch to confirm their SVR and offer a potentially attractive sounding new deal. By shopping around however you may be able to transfer to a new lender with better rates available which leads onto the final and maybe most important mistake…
4. Not getting independent mortgage advice.
Now of course we would say that but a simple way to avoid these mistakes and others is to seek advice. As a mortgage broker we will sit with you to understand your circumstances and needs, and then search the market for the most competitive deal. We also have exclusive deals not available on the high street. Call us on 01275 244360 so that we can arrange a no obligation discussion.

Achieve your dream target weight
At Slimming World members are amazed at the amount they can eat and still lose weight. There’s no fads or gimmicks with our science-based Food Optimising plan. It’s a flexible eating plan where no foods are banned. Tailored to suit everyone’s individual dietary requirements it allows us to satisfy our appetite, without guilt or counting calories and, together with the know-how and power to develop new habits, be healthier, fitter and slimmer for good.
In September 2021, the final straw for Wendy was when she stood in front of the mirror and felt unhappy as she realised most of her lovely clothes wouldn’t fit anymore. Deciding to lose weight and improve her wellbeing, Wendy joined her local Slimming World group in Churchill and went on to lose over two stone, to achieve her dream target weight. Being a busy, full-time businesswoman, Wendy loves the fact that the 3-step Food Optimising plan is so easy to follow. Planning snacks and her favourite tipple into her weekly menu, Wendy enjoys food and drink without restriction. With healthy changes to the way they cook, the family enjoy filling meals like home-made soups and jacket potatoes. Their favourite meal is roast chicken and vegetables, a meal they eat together.
Wendy says “Staying to group meetings is key to my success. Soaking up all the inspirational help and support from Mary and fellow members helped me greatly. Dropping several dress sizes gave me such a boost. Now I love that I can pick any item from my wardrobe and wear it with confidence, and I really enjoy shopping for new clothes too. My goal was to wear a particular outfit to a family wedding without feeling like I was the ’fat’ auntie! On the day, I felt fabulous.” I think she looked amazing! Wendy’s stayed beautifully within her target range since achieving target in May 2022.
Mary and Cathy love their Slimming World groups and are so very proud of all their members. If you would love to lose weight, come along to one of our local friendly groups. There will be a warm welcome and oodles of support awaiting you.

Once Upon a River
by Diane Setterfield
In Once Upon a River, Setterfield has created a captivating and atmospheric novel that follows the story of a mysterious a young girl, found on the banks of the Thames and seemingly resurrected
from the dead. She’s taken in by the local pub owner and his family, who nurse her back to health, but her appearance sets off a chain of events that draws together a disparate group of characters, including a traveling storyteller, a grieving father, and a barmaid with a remarkable voice. As the girl’s identity is slowly revealed, the characters are forced to confront their own secrets and desires.
One of the most striking things throughout the novel is Setterfield’s mastery of language. She paints vivid pictures of the river and its surroundings, making the reader feel as though they are right there alongside the characters. The descriptions of the water, the sky, and the countryside are all rich and evocative, adding to the sense of mystery and wonder.
The novel explores themes of loss, grief, and the power of storytelling, weaving together a rich tapestry of folklore and mystery, with enough plot twists to keep the reader guessing until the very end.
