Do we get the leaders we deserve?

In a few days we’ll find out who our next prime minister will be.

We hope for good leaders.

Integrity and trustworthiness are important. There are too many times when bad leaders have embezzled money, enriching themselves and their friends at the expense of their country. Remember Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos of the Philippines and those thousands of shoes?

Good leaders are in touch with the lives of ordinary people. As an example of a bad leader, remember Marie Antoinette, who when the people had no bread, reportedly said: “Let them cake!”

Good leaders don’t quash people’s freedom to disagree with them. Remember how dangerous it was in Stalin’s time for a Russian citizen whose opinion didn’t match up?

Good leaders put the best interests of the population first. They seek “the common good.”

Jesus talked about leadership and modelled a different kind of authority. He talked about the greatest being the servant of others. “Kings like to throw their weight around and people in authority like to give themselves fancy titles. It’s not going to be that way with you. Let the senior among you become like the junior; let the leader act the part of the servant.” * Jesus lived a humble life – no home of his own. He gave of his abilities and energy to teach and heal others. He is famous for being the one in his group who took the menial job no one wanted to do and washed his friends’ feet before they sat down to dinner. Jesus took notice of the vulnerable, those on the edges.

Royal Air Forces Association MidSomerset Branch – Autumn Programme Royal Air Forces MidSomerset Branch had no events during August so the programme for 2022 will continue in the autumn as follows: Monday 5th September – Branch Late Summer Lunch 12:15pm to 12:45pm at Wells Golf Club, Blackheath Lane, Wells, BA5 3DS. This will also be a centenary celebration of a Branch Member.

Sunday 18th September – Branch Battle of Britain Service – By kind permission of the Rector of the Shepton Mallet Benefice, the Branch will sponsor a Service at 1030 at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Shepton Mallet to commemorate the Battle of Britain followed by wreath-laying at the town Cenotaph.

Think before a cataract operation I regularly say to my clients “If we live long enough we will all develop cataracts because cataracts are an age related change”.

A cataract occurs when the natural eye lens becomes cloudy which causes the vision to blur. A simple and straightforward operation can then be carried out. The operation is usually performed under local anaesthetic and involves the cloudy lens being removed and replaced with an artificial clear lens. The most important thing to realise at this point is that THE POWER OF THE REPLACEMENT LENS CAN BE ADJUSTED so that the surgeon can calculate where the eye will focus after the operation.

Your referring optometrist is probably the best placed person to spend time to discuss your postoperative options. The clearest long distance vision may be desired, but a short-sighted or myopic person may prefer to be left slightly short-sighted because they are used to seeing things clearly up close without the need for spectacles.

An NHS-funded replacement lens is a single fixed focus spherical lens. The surgeon can select a lens power to give you whichever outcome you prefer.

A privately funded replacement lens opens up a few other options. If you have a lot of astigmatism in your prescription, a special toric replacement implant lens can be used. ‘Extended focus’ implant lenses are becoming more common now. These lenses have a range of focus which means you may only require ‘booster’ spectacles for specific tasks following the operation.

Discuss with your optometrist what you hope for or expect following surgery. He can then pass this information on to the surgeon to ensure you get the best and most appropriate outcome from your cataract operation.

Updating your bathroom?

Expenses and benefits - social functions and parties It’s that time of year again when we’re beginning to think about where to hold this year’s Christmas party or get together.

As an employer providing social functions and parties for your employees, you have certain National Insurance and reporting obligations.

What you need to report and pay depends on: • if it’s an annual event • if it’s open to all of your employees • if it costs more than £150 per head • how many events you provide during the tax year • whether the employee is a director, and how much they earn.

If the average cost per head exceeds £150 the full amount of the benefit would be chargeable. The £150 is not an allowance to be set against an amount that exceeds that figure.

What’s exempt You might not have to report anything to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or pay tax and National Insurance.

To be exempt, the party or similar social function must: • be open to all your employees • be annual, such as a Christmas party or summer barbecue • cost £150 or less per person This also applies to online or virtual parties.

Separate locations and departments If your business has more than one location, an annual event that’s open to all of your staff based at one location still counts as exempt.

You can also put on separate parties for different departments, as long as all of your employees can attend one of them.

As long as the combined cost of the events is no more than £150 per head, they’re still exempt.

Director only entertainment If your business only has directors and no employees, the rules change once again. According to HMRC, the cost of providing entertainment only to directors or partners doesn’t qualify for tax relief or a VAT deduction.

However, if this entertainment occurs when they are on a business trip, then VAT paid and tax relief on the costs of travel, meals and accommodation can be claimed.

What to report and pay If any of the events you provide aren’t exempt, you’ll have to report the costs to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and pay National Insurance on them.

You must: • report on each employee’s form P11D • pay Class 1A National Insurance on the full cost of the event Need help, give us a call.

“The Gauntlet” A 1000 years of history The Gauntlet sits within the boundaries of 11 High Street, a typical medieval Burgage plot which encapsulates various historical periods that date back the best part of a 1000 years.

The evidence provided from two extensive archaeological studies prior to development, revealed continual settlement had undoubtedly taken place on this site since the 11th / 12th century. Further finds such as Roman sherds were believe to have been deposited by those passing through the town.

Artefacts from the excavations were logged and transported to the Somerset Museum where they are currently stored and displayed. Several old coins were also discovered which were subsequently recorded and published in one of the Gauntlet books: The Treasure beneath our feet.

During the first phase of the building works, a vast amount of building materials found on site were believed to have been robbed during the dissolution of the Abbey in 1540, indeed some flag stones still remain in shop 11 on east side. The timber floor boards on the upper floors were salvaged from the tall ships as sail gave way to steam.

Secret integral passageways from Flat 4 and Shop 9 were subsequently discovered. The former accessible through to the Tribunal staircase on the west side and the latter accessed the Tribunal kitchen, which had been re-erected in the 15th Century with a further storey added a century later.

The building on the east wing opposite, that sits behind the High Street Shop ranges from early to late Victorian. However the framework and fabric pre-dates much earlier, probably to the 16th / 17th century.

In the early 19th century, the Landlord of both 11 and 13 High street was the mayor of the town, namely Jonathan Payne Newman. He was responsible for erecting the regency styled shop of which you see today in the High street. This replaced an earlier 14th century Barber Apothecary cottage in around 1830.

In 1897 the premises were occupied by Bowring Hawkins, Property surveyors, Auctioneers and estate agents. The shop also served as a library in the late 19th century.

Frank Goodall, the auctioneers and stationers, occupied the shop from the early 20th century, who were responsible for auctioning many of the Abbey treasures. In more recent times in the 1960s and 70s it was a Curry’s electrical branch and later in the 90s a Spar General Store.

In 2003 the land and premises were purchased by entrepreneur Doug Hill who renovated, converted, and extended the site to form what you see today. The development was arguably the most significant in the towns history since the original mapping out by the Normans in the 11th century.

On July 4th 2007, another chapter of history was made as The Gauntlet Shopping Thoroughfare was opened to the public for the first time. In 2008 The Gauntlet went on to scoop two major LABC awards, becoming champions of Somerset and the South West of England.

Today the Gauntlet is considered Glastonbury’s jewel in the crown, a global iconic landmark which is adored by thousands of tourists and locals alike.

The trick is to spend a small amount of time each day getting more confident. Once this is achieved, people have years of enjoyment with their device.

If your eyes struggle, we can look at a bigger screen. Many laptops and most desktop computers can be connected to a larger screen, which makes your enjoyment so much easier if you have been struggling with a small screen for years.

Scams are still in full force – so please remind any elderly friends and family that if the phone rings, it may not be who they say they are. If in any doubt, ring off and double check with a friend or family member first.

Remember to keep your device up to date with manufacturer updates – this is particularly important on Windows, Apple and Android devices. If your device is too old and can no longer be updated, you should consider replacing the device, especially if you make any financial transactions or find the device particularly slow.

One World Fair by Oxfam Saturday 8th October: 10:00am – 4:00pm, at the Town Hall, Wells. The One World Fair, organized by the Mid Somerset Oxfam Group, is returning to Wells Town Hall after a two-year gap, on Saturday 8th October. Each charity at the Fair will have its own stall and will use it to showcase its particular cause.

Some will be raising funds by selling gifts, books, cakes, handcrafts or fairly traded goods.

The OWF Diner will be serving hot vegetarian lunches, with tea, coffee and homemade cakes throughout the day.

- Building relationships with local networks, organizations, schools and social groups to host events or to name their own puppy.

- Delegating tasks and responsibilities to other volunteers within your fundraising group.

As a Puppy Raiser you will: - Socialise and care for our puppy for 12-14 months, in your own home, not leaving it alone for longer than 3 hours.

- Feed, groom and love the ‘guide dog to be’, teaching it basics with the help of Puppy Development advisors.

- Take your pup to monthly puppy classes, interacting with other puppy raisers in your community whilst refreshing your training and sharing tips.

Boards can stop boredom With the onset of Autumn, thoughts might be turning to things to do in the long winter evenings. What better than to play some board games (although Pandemic might be avoided as too much like real life). Like many things we tend to think of as recent ideas, there are many examples of game-playing possibly going back to pre-historic times.

49 small carved and painted stones depicting pyramids, animals and dice, were discovered at a burial site at Basur Höyük in south-eastern Turkey.

Found in groups of four, they are possibly the earliest gaming pieces ever found. Similar pieces have been found in Syria and Iraq, suggesting that board games originated in the Fertile Crescent.

In 1928, the archaeologist Leonard Wooley found several beautifully crafted boards in the Royal cemetery of Ur, the ancient Sumerian city near the modern Iraqi city of Nasiriya which dates back to around 2550-2400 B.C. The “Royal Game of Ur” is thought to have been played at least 4500 years ago and is similar to backgammon. The rules were deciphered by an historian at the British Museum and for anyone interested it’s a fascinating story – csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~pbarfuss/On_the_Rules_ for_the_Royal_Game_of_Ur.pdf

Another of the very early board games, and possibly the oldest, is Senet, which was played by the Egyptians. It too is a race game similar to backgammon and played on a grid of 30 squares but the exact rules are unknown. It appears, however, that sticks were used instead of dice.

The game is pictured in a fresco found in Merknera’s tomb (3300–2700 BC) and paintings have been found at other burial sites such as that of the Egyptian Queen Nefertari (1295-1255 BC).

Palamedes, a figure in Greek mythology, is sometimes credited with inventing dice and the game of draughts but as Illustrated above, stones and clay dice have been found dating back many centuries and to many ancient civilisations.

Knucklebones, a game much like jacks, was played with animal bones and was very popular in Greek and Roman times. Pieces have been found at various archaeological sites around the world and men, women and children are frequently seen playing it in paintings and pottery of the time.

NEWS RELEASE – Ashcott Primary School ‘What a Knight!’ and ‘Ye-Ha!’

Children in KS2 at Ashcott Primary School ended the school year with 2 fantastic stage performances.

The children in Y5 and Y6 performed the play ‘What a Knight!’ a play all about young squire, Watt Cobblers who is expelled from Knight School and reluctantly becomes Merlin’s new apprentice. Watt and his new friends Dusty Dragon and Princess Alice set off on a quest to save Excalibur and defeat the evil Black Knight!

The school hall was packed to the rafters as the children put on their final performance to parents.

With excellent comic timing and wonderful singing voices, the performance was well received by

Mad Dog McNut and his gang are running wild in Splodge City when Wilbur Hubbard the cook lands the job of Sheriff – lucky for Wilbur, Billie-Jo Brisket and her faithful steed Lightning roll into town to lend a hand!

Once again, the children were pitch-perfect with their beautiful singing and their wonderful acting and the staff and parents were very proud of them all. Thank you to Mrs Speakman and Miss Pirrie for their help with singing, props and scenery, and to Mrs Chamberlain for directing another successful performance!
