borders and let them rot naturally. They soon break down and are incorporated into the soil by worms. I still hanker after my own leaf mould crates though.

...and mellow fruitfulness, states the first line of the famous Keats poem. There is something rather lovely about autumn. The days are cooler but often sunny, yet the ground is more moist and so easier to dig. It’s the perfect time of year for gardening.

It’s tempting to tidy up all the browning plant stems but try not to get carried away. Leave some standing because they provide important habitats for wildlife. I do harvest a few seedheads each year: poppies, nigella, and alliums are my favourites. I cut them, leaving their long stems intact and put the heads inside a paper bag, then hang the bunches inside to dry. The ripe seeds fall into the bag and can be labelled and kept for sowing next year’s free plants! The decorative heads look nice in a vase too.

Happy gardening,

If you planted any perennials a few years ago they might need to be divided. Take a look at your plants. If they are dying off in the middle but have good growth around the edges, it’s time to lift and divide. Dig up the root ball of the plant, brush and pull off excess soil and set on to a plastic ground sheet. Pull (or use a garden fork to prise) apart the football into three or four clumps, each with a section of healthy shoots and roots. Replant the ’new’ plants elsewhere in the garden or try swapping plants with friends. Don’t forget to keep them well-watered until they have become established.

If you feel that your garden needs a little more colour heading into winter add a couple of dogwood shrubs into your borders. There are striking red and yellow varieties available. You can also plant sedum, Japanese anemones (Liriope) and Michaelmas daises (Aster). These flower well into late autumn and early winter.

My neighbour (who is retired) makes fabulous leaf mould in meshed cages he’s constructed himself. I take a ‘busy mum’ approach to fallen leaves. I run them over with a mower then rake the resulting confetti off my lawn into the flower beds and

Finally, a little planning for next year goes a long way. October is the perfect time to plant daffodil, crocus, hyacinth and allium bulbs for next spring.

“We created a completely new space from scratch”, said Charles Weeks, Bathroom Surveyor at AHM. The dividing wall was knocked down, a new ceiling was put in and a new extractor fan was installed. The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. The family are delighted with their new wetroom.

AHM Installations takes the hassle out of finding the right tradespeople

LOCAL EXPERT PAGE 8|www.localreach.co.uk TO ADVERTISE CALL 01458 555503

The Booth* family called AHM Installations for advice as their father, who uses a wheelchair, was struggling to access the bathroom easily and safely. They wanted to have their downstairs study and toilet knocked together to form one large wetroom. This may sound like a job for a builder, but AHM have all the skills and experience you need.

When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. But there may be structural work needed too – AHM Installations can do it all. For example, you could create a bigger bathroom by removing a wall or create a new ensuite bathroom by adding a wall. If you wanted a more powerful shower the electric cables could need updating. A floor might need taking up to examine the pipework underneath. A good installations company doesn’t shy away from this type of work because it ensures that your bathroom is safe; that it meets regulations and that it works for you. The last thing you want in your bathroom is dodgy electrics!

“AHM is an absolutely wonderful company – we couldn’t recommend it more. It’s made such a difference to Dad and to all of us. Amazing designers and the men who fitted it were wonderful, polite and patient.” AHM often have jobs that require structural work. AHM take the hassle out of organising the tradespeople you need to complete the job. All our fitters are members of BIKBBI which means they are DBS checked, fully insured and continually monitored. AHM Installations is a family-run firm installing safe, affordable bathrooms for people with limited mobility. Call us on 01458 550445 to discuss your needs.

Reflexology to support your immune system and overall health and well being

For an informal chat about various reflexology treatments, please

by Preb David MacGeoch, Vicar of Glastonbury with Meare www.stjohns-glastonbury.uk

Reflexology Lymphatic Drainage (RLD) is a specialist type of reflexology stimulating specific lymphatic reflexes on the feet that focuses on the Lymphatic System, one of the body’s waste disposal systems which supports your immunity. Lymphatic drainage has predominantly been associated with cancer patients having lymphoedema and RLD has shown amazing results. (www.reflexologylymphaticdrainage. co.uk) however it can also be beneficial for people with long term chronic health problems, such as arthritis, ME and fibromyalgia. When the lymph flow becomes stagnant and congested, waste and toxins begin to build up which weakens your immune system, making you more susceptible to various health conditions. RLD can help improve the flow of lymph, leading to release of toxins, whilst also speeding up the delivery of vital nutrients to your body’s cells.

Weight loss success sees Glastonbury mum crowned Woman of the Year

To join Emma’s group, just turn up or call 07432 584673

A Glastonbury mum who lost three stone in just two months is celebrating being crowned Woman of the Year by her weight loss group after maintaining her target weight for nearly two years. Sophie Hegarty, 37, piled on the pounds during lockdown, tipping the scales at nearly 13 stone as she poured herself into size 16 jeans. She lost all her confidence, hiding behind her children when pictures were taken, until she eventually decided ‘enough was enough’. Sophie joined her local Slimming World group in Glastonbury in October 2020, losing 3st 1.5 by Christmas to get to her target weight of just under nine stone. “I’d struggled with my weight for a few years, and then when lockdown hit, it got worse, my health suffered even more than before and even more weight went on,” said Sophie, who can now slip into a size 8 dress.

Sophie’s consultant Emma Schnitzer, said: “We are all so proud of Sophie, she just got stuck into the plan and fell in love with everything it offers. She’s got so much more confidence now and it’s so inspiring for everyone else in the group. It just goes to show how you can transform your life and keep the weight off if it’s what you really want. Why not do what Sophie did and give yourself the best Christmas gift there is.”

“I’d lost all confidence, my clothes didn’t fit anymore and I felt horrible. It got to the point where my health had got really bad and I knew enough was enough, it was time to make a change, and I’m so glad I did!”

Sophie inspired her own group as she quickly learned how to adapt family-friendly meals to feed her and her three sons - and lose weight each week. She has also been featured on the Slimming World website and on Instagram for her incredible success and meal inspiration.

Sophie said: “Within a short space of time, I could feel my health improving and I was able to come off meds all together. As well as losing weight, I’ve lost 66.5 inches all over and five dress sizes but I’ve also gained a whole lot of confidence, completely turned my health around and I’m actually happy. Walking through those doors and joining my group was the best thing I ever did for myself.”

Loving Earth is a global project run by Quaker Arts Network (details online at lovingearthproject.uk) to help people engage creatively with the climate crisis. Each panel addresses threats to the environment in a different way and is accompanied by details written by the artist on why a particular theme is close to their heart and what action they have taken. The panels highlight places, people, creatures and other aspects of the natural world that are threatened by the climate crisis. The exhibition raises many questions about the climate emergency and encourages people to engage with Therethem.

An innovation for the next concert is that will be on the afternoon of Saturday January 28th rather than during the dark winter evening. Howard comments on the music chosen for this performance “We are tackling two very contrasting works”. The first is a beautiful Requiem by the French composer Duruflé. For the style of music think ‘Fauré with sophisticated extras’. The themes of the Requiem are based on chants and will fit really well with the acoustics of All Saints’ Church. The second group of pieces is a brand-new work by Bob Chilcott. Songs my Heart has Taught Me is a set of four songs in various styles, one of which is musical theatre. There is both tranquil beauty and high energy in this set.

There are few people who don’t enjoy carving a Halloween lantern. Over the years it’s somehow become a tradition in our family to host a friendly pumpkin carving competition involving my sons and their teenage friends and quite a few of the parents! There are also hotdogs, sticky toffee pudding and wine, so something for everyone and all participants seems to enjoy the occasion, especially the judging. We have categories such as ‘best in show’, ‘ugliest, ‘most creative’ etc.

Jack O’ Lantern Pumpkin carving is steeped in folklore

Jack thought he was being very clever, but it all backfired on him because when he did finally die God refused him entry into heaven while the Devil, keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and is said to have been roaming the Earth his home-made lamp ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.”

Jack did eventually free the Devil, but only on the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. It seems the Devil didn’t learn his lesson and the following year Jack tricked him again, this time into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised not to bother Jack for ten more years.

Ghoulish pumpkins are iconic of Halloween season. I’ve always thought of them as an American import but in fact the practice of decorating jack-o’-lanterns originated across a much smaller expanse of water, in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes were the vegetables being carved. The name, Jack-o’lantern, originates from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to hollow out a turnip (I have…it resulted in a trip to A&E), but I can only imagine the delight of Irish immigrants, newly arrived in America, home of the pumpkin, on discovering this easily carved gourd. No wonder it became an integral part of Halloween

were wondering about Stingy Jack, well he rather rashly invited the Devil to have a drink with him, but true to his name, didn’t want to pay for the beverages, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. However as soon as the Devil did so, Jack popped the coin into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.

These are habitats which have become increasingly rare in the wider countryside, filled with vulnerable species, including the onceextinct large blue butterfly and rare species such as the dormouse, bechstein’s bat, and great crested newt. The reserves are exceptionally important in their own right, but they also play a vital role in Somerset’s Nature Recovery Network, acting as core, nature-rich sites from which wildlife can spread into the wider landscape.

Rachael Fickweiler, Head of Nature Reserves at Somerset Wildlife Trust, has said:

This means that raising funds is more important than ever. Since the Nature Reserves Fund was established in 2016, agri-environment funding has decreased by almost 25%, and while the Trust received £470k in grants last year, it needed to spend £866k on their management and preservation — leaving a gap of £396k. This year, with the costs of equipment, fuel, and materials increasing at the fastest rate in 40 years, the charity is depending on the Fund to help fill the gap in its funding and ensure that it will be able to continue looking after these very special sites that so many species rely on.

Unfortunately, the cost of looking after these nature reserves rises every year. The Trust estimates that it is currently costing £2,600 a day to maintain them — and this is even with the help of many committed and skilled volunteers working on site. Included in this cost is the maintenance and improvement of wildlife habitats, fence repairs required for conservation grazing, dealing with the impacts of diseases like ash dieback, and all the work that is required to ensure visitors are kept safe and able to enjoy the fantastic wildlife on the reserves.

We know that things are difficult for people financially at the moment, but we ask that people give what they can to ensure we can all continue to connect to and value these special places long into the future.

Every donation made to the Nature Reserves Fund makes a crucial difference to our ability to maintain these special sites, which are not only beautiful places but most importantly safeguard a significant range of rare plants and animals.”

The charity looks after a total of 68 nature reserves spread across Somerset, which include areas of ancient woodland, flower-rich meadows, and

Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. Cro-Magnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.

Poetry inspires writing - Poetry teaches children how to put words together to form meaning and context. They learn that choosing the right words is important.

Good question. I remember asking the same one when I was a similar age. I don’t think I got a satisfactory answer then so in the name of research I spoke to a couple of English teachers.

Poetry builds reading, speaking, and listening skills - Poetry is intended to be read aloud, repeated often, and shared. Children learn to attend both to the words they hear, the rhythm and rhyme, and also to think about what those words mean together.

Poetry introduces more complex language and vocabulary - Poetry allows teachers to show children how language can be broken down and evaluated in parts. This is useful for literacy. The rhymes teach phonics and letter sounds. The verses can be used to teach sentence structure and grammar. Children are exposed to new words in context and learn how those words are chosen for their effect to create imagery.
