Garden View This month – Partnership Perfection When we think about climbing plants, we most often think about growing them to cover a wall or a fence. We might think about growing them over a dead tree stump too, but one of the nicest ways to grow them is through a living tree or a shrub. It’s an excellent way of providing more interest in the same space, either by timing each plant’s display so they follow on from each other, or by timing the flowering so they bloom at the same time, thus doubling the impact of the display.

There are a few rules you need to follow when you plant a climber with the intention of growing it up a living host. First, the host shrub or tree should be established, woody, and strong enough to hold up the climber’s weight when it’s fully grown and flowering. Second you don’t want to use too vigorous a climber, otherwise it might swamp the host. Finally, avoid fast-growing evergreen climbers because they prevent light getting to the host, and may cause it to develop disease and die. You can

certainly use less aggressive evergreens such as the ivy Hedera ‘pedata’ or Hedera ‘Curlylocks’ around the base of well-established trees. These will look beautiful without overwhelming the structure and flowering of the host plant.

Climbers that look good over trees and shrubs are typically, clematis, honeysuckle, and roses. Look for species that grow to 3m or less as these are ideal for growing up most garden trees. Species that are cut back to 15-20cm every winter are also ideal.

Clematis ‘Abundance’, ‘Etoile Violette’ and ‘Little Nell’ are all good choices.

Honeysuckle can often be seen (and smelled) growing through trees in the wild. For your garden look for cultivars of the common honeysuckle, such as Lonicera periclymenum.

Rambling roses can grow to monstrous proportions, so look for smaller varieties such as ‘City of York’ and ‘Parade’, which also have a long season of interest.

If you have a cool moist area try growing the perennial nasturtium, Tropaeolum speciosum. The jewel-coloured flowers will brighten a darker space.

Children’s Sports Specs Children love to play sport yet what happens if they are reliant on spectacles to see clearly? May has got to be one of the loveliest times of year. In the cycle of the year, the quiet of winter is behind us, the glories of summer ahead. Similarly, in church, it is the Easter season and we are celebrating Jesus’ resurrection and new life coming after death.

I’m looking forward to the frosts being over and the garden being full of blooms. Although at the moment the weeds seem to be growing faster than anything else. We moved into a rather neglected garden, this time last year. For a while, uprooting brambles and docks seemed a full-time job, but I came across a piece of advice… it is more joyful to plant flowers than to dig up weeds. That can apply to other parts of life too… make sure you find some joyful things to do, celebrate the good, don’t just focus on what’s wrong and needs sorting out.

So, what can we celebrate at the moment? In the past months it’s been striking how generous people have been: inviting refugees to stay, offering time, skills and money. The Wells Community Network is filling a database with the offers of help and Somerset County Council staff have worked really hard on matching hosts with refugees and supporting both.

Jesus said love God and love your neighbour as yourself. There’s a lot of that to celebrate this season.

It is thought that Mayday celebrations were part of the Celtic tradition celebrating Spring and the Romans were thought to have celebrated the first day of May in honour of the goddess Flora.

Such celebrations may well have involved dancing around a living tree but the first recorded evidence of maypole dancing dates back to 1350 when a tall beech trunk was erected at Llanidloes in Wales. The tradition quickly spread and a poem attributed to Chaucer (Chaunce of the Dice) mentions a peramanent maypole at Cornhill in London.

between 9 and 20 metres high. They were decorated with leaves and flowers and sometimes painted. People danced around them, sometimes holding hands, sometimes kissing in passing and there was usually music, typically supplied by a piper or fiddler.

In what has become a common theme in these articles of late, the practice of maypole dancing was frowned up by the Puritans who banned the erection of maypoles, condemning it as a wicked pagan practice. Of course that didn’t always stop people erecting maypoles and My Bird is a Roundhead is the title of a broadside ballad of 1643, written

by Humphrey Crouch which tells the true story of a Northamptonshire man who set up a maypole and kept a tame owl that he called “Roundhead”.

Unfortunately for him, one of his Puritan neighbours had him brought before a Justice of the Peace for such provocation.

Not surprisingly, the restoration of the monarchy also brought about the restoration of maypole dancing and a huge maypole was erected in the Strand in London in April 1661 which was over 130 feet or 39 metres high.

Search engines are an invaluable tool that most of us make use of each and every day. But while invaluable, the risks involved are serious, particularly when the user is unaware of what to look for.

However, sometimes fake results can direct us to malicious websites that can trick an unsuspecting user into being scammed or getting their computer infected with viruses. The algorithms that determine search results do their best to keep dangerous results at bay, but scammers can sometimes get past these protective measures. This means that on occasion, malicious search results will be lurking amongst legitimate results, sometimes as the top result, or not far off.

For this reason, caution should be taken when inspecting search results. No matter how high up a result is, it could lead you to a website that disguises itself as the one you intended to reach.

Some examples of what to look for are deals that are “far too good to be true”, results which threaten or question the health of your computer, results which provide a phone number to call, results with spelling or grammar mistakes, results promising any kind of giveaway, and results where the website address appears fake, or disguised to look similar to the real website address. Sometimes fake companies masquerade as a genuine company, which is one of the most worrying situations, as this can be hard to spot.

HOW TO REWARD EMPLOYEES USING NON-TAXABLE BENEFITS Generally employment income and benefits are taxable.

However there are some benefits that do not have tax consequences.

Carrot Sweet Potato and Feta Fritters A tasty snack or a light vegetarian meal

200g feta, crumbled 6 tbsp wholemeal flour 25g fresh coriander, chopped 2 tbsp cumin seeds 300ml vegetable oil Green salad, lime wedges and yogurt to serve Method: Peel and grate the carrots, potatoes, onion, and sweet potatoes. Place them into a colander or a large sieve over the sink with a big pinch of salt, and leave to drain for 30 minutes.

Take a large bowl and in it combine the eggs, feta cheese, flour, coriander, and cumin seeds. Beat with a fork until well mixed.

Well Washed Eco-Dry-Cleaning Service Well Washed Ltd set up in December 2017, and started trading in January 2018. I was aware that there was a gap in the market for an eco-dry-cleaner. So with a lot of help from relatives, friends and all my loyal customers, I managed to get it up and running.

Starting was key; get going and the business would prove its worth.

It started at a steady pace and by April that year, we had several new clients, ranging from The Cathedral School to Mr Filberts, and so many newly opened B&B’s. Jungle Properties also asked to use Well Washed for all their linen needs. It was starting to take off. By September that year we had also managed to get a contract from Chalice Well, to provide them with their linen, which was a big deal for us. We began the year with 2 members of staff, which at the time was plenty, but as we were attracting more and more new clients, Staff has increased. We now have 2 full time, and 2 part time members of the Well Washed Family. It has been a challenging and rewarding experience setting up, and getting it running. Watching it take off through word of mouth has been amazing. We seemed to be attracting clients who like a little bit more of a personal touch.

We offer an eco-dry-cleaning service, which is not only friendly on the environment, but friendly on you too. We hand iron everything, it gives us an advantage over the large machines that do the folding, as we can see each item as it goes through our ironers, we then fold it, to try to get the least amount of creasing. Some clients like it folded a special way, this we do just for them. We will tackle those hard to get-out stains with what we have started to call our ‘Witches Brew’, our own special stain removing way. Duvets and blankets, pillows and throws, all get freshened up and bagged for convenience.

We are learning new ways of doing laundry and linen all the time, this helps to improve our service.

All the staff have great advice to improve or change the way we do things to make it a better working environment as well.

We are small and we like being small, it means we provide that little bit extra our customers have come to know and love.

Dealing with Negative Emotions Many of us have learned to try to ignore or run away from negative emotions, but if you recognise this behaviour then you will know that it is exhausting and impossible to sustain - after all, feeling hurt, angry, jealous, sad is just a natural part of being human and suppressing these feelings can do real harm to our wellbeing.

The next time you feel a strong negative emotion, try just acknowledging it and sitting with it, asking yourself what it is trying to tell you, not judging, just being. Become aware of where the emotion sits in your body. Be curious.

From awareness and acceptance comes understanding and the ability to take back the driving seat. Emotions are neither good nor bad in themselves. Sometimes, there will be actions we will choose to take. Sometimes we may do nothing and let the emotion burn itself out.

Either way, by becoming aware, we take back control and allow ourselves to live fuller lives.

So give yourself permission to be human, and remember: when we think well, we stay well!

Saturday 7th May: Another open day event will be held in Glastonbury on Saturday 7th May to give the local community a chance to find out about the 12 projects set to benefit from the £23.6m Town Deal funding, providing an opportunity to share feedback and ideas with the people leading the projects.

Open from 10:30am until 2:30pm, this event will be held at St John’s Church in Glastonbury. Local residents and businesses are encouraged to pop in during the day to learn about the exciting opportunities and benefits that the funding could bring for the town. This follows a successful open day event at the Town Hall in late February, which attracted more than 350 people. Representatives from the different projects were able to share information, answer questions and collate comments from the visitors. This feedback is now being used by the project teams as they continue to develop the Business Cases required by the government.

In addition, a new website has been launched to share information about the Glastonbury Town Deal with the local community. This can be found at glastonburytowndeal.co.uk. The overall aim is for Glastonbury to be a sustainable, prosperous, modern town and global tourist centre, drawing on its rural landscape, history and unique legacy.

The various groups gave their reports of the last few months. The Rambling group is now embarking on a very interesting programme, they have already visited the Levels and had a walk round Wells. Walks at Chew Valley Lake and on the beach are planned.

The Craft group has been visiting Exhibitions. The Leisure Group has been twice to see shows at Strode. The Reading Group is going strong. The Drama Group is resting at the moment after the delightful entertainment earlier in the year. Groups have also found time to have some refreshment and meals out. It is so lovely to be able to get back together again after all those months in isolation .

Our next meeting is on Thursday 12th May in Glastonbury Town Hall at 2:30pm. Visitors are always welcome so come along and find out about Glastonbury Tor Townswomen’s Guild.

Better Bus Charter for Somerset

Saturdays: The Repair Café in Glastonbury has been running since October 2021 and operates every third Saturday in the month from 10:00am to 12 noon. We alternate between St Edmund’s Community Hall on Windmill Hill, and St Benedict’s Church in Benedict Street.

Repair Cafés started in 2009 when an observant Dutch woman from Amsterdam called Martine Postma noticed how much repairable electrical and mechanical equipment was being dumped in landfill. She decided to set up places where people could bring their items like kettles, toasters, hoovers, lamps, clocks, toys and radios to be mended by a volunteer workforce to prolong the life of these sometimes expensive household items and learn how to do it in the process. At Repair Café you don’t just drop off your items and then go shopping!

No, you can sit and watch the fixer dismantle your appliance and see how they diagnose the fault and hopefully put it right. All for a reasonable donation!

With all commodities becoming more expensive and with Global Warming a real and present issue we need to pay more attention to what we throw away and how we can produce less waste and pollution. Repair Cafés address all this and provide an opportunity for people to meet and exchange tips and ideas on how to repair things and create resilience in a local population.

A new Food Resilience grant fund is being provided to help Somerset communities that support or directly work to develop food resilience. Any community group, charity, organisation, and agency in Somerset can apply for a maximum of £2,000.

The deadline for applications has been extended to the 31st May 2022 - or when the fund runs out. The grant is funded by Somerset County Council and provided by Smart Communities Ltd. During the Covid-19 pandemic, food security became a huge focus for communities across the nation. Communities in Somerset came together to help support individuals, families, homeless people and anyone isolated to make sure that everyone in need had access to food through deliveries, collection points, and storage solutions. Often these needs have always in our communities but were unseen by the wider community. Now those groups are being offered additional funding to help continue to tackle those needs and continue the wonderful work undertaken over the last two years.
