Garden View This month – Swiss Chard

March means the start of outdoor sowing season in the UK, as the days begin to lengthen and become warmer. I discovered Swiss Chard several years ago when I was looking for something more interesting than spinach. It’s rarely found in the supermarkets for some reason and is quite delicious. It’s also easy to grow and doesn’t require much maintenance.

Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla var. flavescens is sometimes called Rainbow Chard because of its ornamental stems. The fact it’s so decorative, with its large fleshy dark green leaves and bright stalks in shades of red, purple, gold and white make it a good choice for a small garden. It looks attractive in containers or borders.

To grow it, choose a sunny (but not sun-baked) spot, prepare the soil well (or use compost in a large container), make shallow drills about 40cm apart and sow the chard seeds thinly, approximately 1.5cm deep. Cover the seeds with soil and water

well. You can start sowing in March, then every few weeks you can repeat sow, until September for a continuous crop that will even see you through the winter if you give it a little protection. I move my pots to the greenhouse.

As the seedlings begin to grow, thin out the plants so that they’re 25-30cm apart. Water well after thinning. Chard is an easy vegetable to look after but keep an eye open for slugs and snails. Birds also seem to like the little seedlings (at least in my garden) so you might need to protect them.

Young chard leaves can be eaten fresh so use the early thinned leaves for salads. The adult chard leaves are ready to harvest about 10-12 weeks after sowing, though later in the year it will take a little longer. It’s a wonderful cut-and-come-again plant.

Cut individual leaves as you need them, and the plant will keep producing new growth.

Swiss chard varieties to try: My favourite variety is ‘Bright Lights’ which has rainbow-coloured stems. It’s particularly good for autumn crops. ‘Fantasy’ has pretty red stems and is good if your garden tends to be damp as it’s resistant to mildew. As its name suggests ‘Bright Yellow’ has yellow stalks and is very striking.

All three of these varieties can be over-wintered with a little protection and provide you with an early crop the following spring.

More availability for full fibre broadband… but can you get it?

For many years, the BT spin off, Openreach has been quite slow to offer full fibre broadband in the area. Full fibre means that a fibre optic cable is run to the property, rather than a copper based solution.

This can support speeds of up to 1000 mbps (megabits per second) download. Most people can receive up to 80 on the common part fibre – part copper system that Openreach typically provide.

Over the last few weeks, we have noticed many customers in the area now having the ability to upgrade their internet to full fibre, at little or no extra cost. It is worth noting that not all providers offer full fibre, so it is worth checking to see if other options are available. Providers that may be available to offer full fibre are: Truespeed, Gigaclear (both have their own network independent of Openreach), BT, Sky and TalkTalk.

If you are still on standard broadband, but not a customer of these, it might be worth checking if these providers are able to offer a better speed compared to your current supplier. The product to ask for is “Fibre to the Premises” which is the best option, followed by “Fibre to the Cabinet”.

For those of you that live in a more rural setting, and cannot get good internet, it is worth looking at 4G or 5G internet which is provided via the mobile networks.

There have been many surveys conducted over the years asking people if they pray. The results may be surprising. Whether or not those in the survey say they believe in God or admit to being ‘religious’, more often than not, particularly in a crisis, people admit to praying in some form or another: ‘Please, God…’ One recent survey for example, suggested that one in 20 adults started praying for the firsttime during lockdown. When I meet people and offer to pray for them, I have never been turned down. There is something about prayer, which at its heart is talking and listening to God, that people seem to be attracted to.

The Bible has much to say about prayer. Jesus in his ministry taught his disciples how to pray using the most famous prayer of all, the Lord’s Prayer, which is now prayed by millions of people in many languages and versions every day.

Prayer in essence is very simple; it does not require complicated words or theological phrases; anyone can pray, and the prayer can be as simple as saying ‘help’. Sometimes, there are no words, and we simply need to cry out to God, perhaps in pain or concern, joy or faith.

With such an interest in prayer, I am really excited that our group of churches will be hosting and running a course about prayer starting on Wednesday 9th March in the Mission Church, Street. Death and Service: The Commonwealth War Graves of Somerset The graveyards and cemeteries of Somerset are full of burials of people whose names are lost to time.

More than 800 men and women who fought for their country during the First World War and made the ultimate sacrifice lie buried in the county. The graves recognise their military service, but don’t tell us anything of their lives outside of the conflict.

Edwin Robert Hann lies at rest in nearby Glastonbury Cemetery. Born in Johannesburg in 1900, his father Albert had grown up in Somerset, while his mother, Jemima, was the South African daughter of an Irish immigrant. Little information on Edwin’s early life is available, but it appears that he enlisted in the army as soon as his age allowed.

In Street Cemetery is the grave of Harold Cook. Born in the town in February 1899, he was the youngest of nine children to George and Amelia. Harold’s mother died when he was just a toddler, but the family rallied. By the time of the 1911 census, they were living in Park Terrace and Harold, being still at school, was the only member of the household not to be working at the Clark’s Factory.

Private Hann joined the South African Infantry, and his regiment were involved in many of the key battles of the conflict. Edwin appears to have been wounded at Le Cateau in 1918, and was admitted to the Brookwood Asylum in Surrey soon afterwards.

His injuries are unclear, but he succumbed to them on 23rd October. Just 18 years old and 9,000km from home, his body was brought back to his paternal grandparents, and buried in Glastonbury.

War broke out and, when he was able to, Harold enlisted. Assigned as a Private in the Suffolk Regiment, he was sent off to training in Cambridge.

Sadly, while there, he was shot in the foot while cleaning a faulty rifle; the injury turned septic and, despite an amputation, he died of septicaemia on 4th October 1917, at the tender age of 18 years old.

Homeland Elegies is a novel which could be (and partly is) an autobiographical series of essays.

Akhtar goes on to explore themes on American life, 9/11, partition, Muslim identity, family dynamics, and Salman Rushdie. It’s not a light read but it is intelligently written, and the essay style of writing means that it can be read in bite-size sections.

At its heart, Homeland Elegies is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home.

It seamlessly blends fact and fiction to tell a story of belonging and dispossession in a post 9/11 world.

But their mother is arrested and Sofia and Ermin end up in the care of the nuns at the orphanage, where children disappear in the middle of the night. When Sofia witnesses something first hand, she makes an unlikely ally and sets off to save her mother.

The author has created a dark fantasy world of lost catacombs, secret tunnels and pools through which Sofia and her friends have to hunt for clues to her mother’s true talents, and through their adventure discover the power of family and friendship.

British Pie Week 7th - 13th March Sawdust Pie - Made from cookie crumbs, coconut and pecans, this pie gets its name from the appearance of the filling ingredients when they are mixed together. It’s wonderfully delicious and crumbly, and perfect with vanilla ice cream.

Stargazy Pie is a traditional Cornish pie, made with pilchards and hardboiled eggs in a white sauce under a buttery pastry crust. It derives its name from the way the pilchard heads are arranged to poke out of the crust, staring skywards. It’s a rich, salty, and hearty pie, and if you can get over the slightly freaky appearance it’s worth a try, at least once.

It’s British Pie Week again this month. We all know how delicious steak and kidney, chicken and mushroom and apple pies are, but this month why not branch out a little and try some more unusual fillings.

Almost as bizarre, and certainly equally as weirdly named, is Funeral Pie, which gets its name from the fact it is served at Amish funerals. It’s actually a rather lovely moist raisin pie, flavoured with cinnamon and all spice.

Vinegar Pie - Actually a dessert. It tastes sharply sweet, similar to lemon or our apple. The flavour is surprisingly fresh and pleasant, and the caramelised top gives it an elegant appearance. Cider vinegar is usually used but any fruit-infused vinegar would work. Historically it was made when fresh produce was scarce.

If you still feel you’d like to change career the next question is ‘What?’ What would you like to do?

Research is key. The more research you do, the better position you’ll be in to make the right decision.

Set a time limit on your research so you don’t get stuck in ‘analysis paralysis.’

As we emerge blinking into the (almost) postpandemic world of work, many of us are finding that we’ve changed as people, which is not surprising, and our job no longer seems like such a good fit for us.

Changing career is a decision which can’t be made lightly, and the prospect can be daunting, but sometimes it can be best way forward.

The first thing you need to as is ‘What’s my why?’

Why do I want to change? Do you want more money? Or maybe you’d like more flexible hours and less stress. You might dream of running your own business or turning your hobby into your career.

The next thing to ask is ‘When?’ When is the right time?

It’s probably the right time to consider a career change (or at least a job change) if your workplace is toxic and grinding you down. Toxic workplaces impact on your mental and physical health and are rarely worth the pay cheque long term. It’s also time to re-evaluate if you’re only in it for the money. A career change might give you the chance to find more personal and professional satisfaction but still pay all the bills. If you get a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach every Sunday evening, it could be a good time to consider a change. Likewise, if you’re bored all the time and feel like you’re sleepwalking towards retirement, it’s a good sign that you might benefit from a change.

Various surveys have been carried out on careerchangers. And overwhelmingly the responses are mostly positive. Respondents reported feeling happier, more fulfilled, and less stressed. Around 80% of people who have changed careers say that they wish they had done it sooner. Very few of them regretted their decision.

Of those that did have regrets the main one was financial insecurity. Changing careers can incur costs such as having to pay for further education or an initial drop in salary.

They want to change but they’re scared or overwhelmed or worried about what others might think. So, take the time to go through the above process step-by-step manner to help to clarify things in your mind. When you feel confident, other people are more likely to be supportive.

Fun and Games for the TG Thursday 10th March: The last few months enabled Glastonbury Townswomen’s Guild to meet again for monthly meetings in Glastonbury Town Hall. We have enjoyed meeting up and sharing a cup of tea with friends whom we have not seen for several months. The meetings saw us enjoying games, hearing poetry readings relating to Christmas, pulling crackers (these were made by the Craft group and they did go off bang ), singing carols, and at our January meeting enjoying several sketches performed by the Entertainment group that filled the hall with laughter. It is so good to be back to “nearly normal”.

Talks have been on the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and on “Travels around England visiting many Cathedrals” by a very interesting speaker.

Our next meeting is on Thursday, 10th March at 2:30pm in the Glastonbury Town Hall. The talk is on the “Adventures of a Bewildered Writer”, If anyone is interested in hearing this and finding out about TG please come along, all visitors are welcome.

To make a start you can join us at the shed as we are open for new members both male and female to join us. We have plenty of space in our two workshops for you to work, and a kitchen/social area for you to chat over tea or coffee.

We open 3 days a week, Monday 9:00am to 12:30pm on Tuesdays 9:00am to 4:30pm on Thursdays 9:00am to 4:30pm, we may be opening for extra days if there is a demand.

The lady’s session is from 1:00pm to 4:30pm on Tuesday afternoon, we also hold a mixed session on Thursday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:30pm.

Your life changes forever the day you bring home your little bundle of joy. Whether you give birth naturally, adopt or foster, this little person now depends on you for everything. From now on they come first, you come second, and a poor second at that.

Being a mother is fabulous, and funny, and frightening.

It’s the best and worst of jobs. There are cuddles and giggles, sports days and parents’ evenings, Nativities, and music recitals…there are also blazing rows with slammed doors, sleepless nights and more vomit than you ever realised one small human could produce.

Mums are multi-tasking maestros. Carer, teacher, agony aunt, tour guide, drill sergeant, PA, and chauffeur… Even when they leave home it doesn’t stop.

I still rely on my mother for advice, help with childcare, and a shoulder to cry on when things go pear-shaped.

It’s only now as with children of my own, that I realise what my own mother went through – why she made me do my homework, go to bed early, stop beating my sister up, eat my broccoli, save my pocket money, don’t talk to strangers, and say please and thank you.

Mother’s Day might have become a cliché, but it does give us the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our mums for everything they have done and still do for us.

Anna Jarvis, who founded Mothers’ Day in the US said she came to regret campaigning to get the day recognised, because it became commercialised.

She hated that people sent cards with a pre-printed message rather than writing a letter.

So, although it’s a nice gesture to buy a card and give flowers and chocolates, it’s even nicer to do something

History Kids Somerset is a new free resource available for anyone interested in local history. It can be found at www.historykidssomerset.weebly. com.

It has been created by Jeni Waller in conjunction with a BA in History, Heritage and Archaeology delivered

by Strode College. This fantastic new engaging website features some of the local history around the Street, Glastonbury and Wells area, and is aimed at primary-aged children, their parents, and teachers. Some of the local history covered includes, the story of Swaynes Jumps during the Monmouth rebellion, the hoax of King Arthur’s gravesite, links with the Niewe Herball at Lytes Cary and a small medieval settlement called Maggoty Paggotty near the Great Breach Wood.

There are 31 individual sites currently available to look at, as well as some activities and a timeline.

The plan is to continue to develop and expand the site further in the future.
