Garden View This month - Gone to seed! Gardening is a hobby and, after a while, most people with hobbies find themselves experimenting. They get a bit creative and want to see if they can do something on the cheap, or for free, or simply find to out whether it’s possible to do something just for the simple pleasure of trying. Seed collecting falls into this category for me. Most seeds are not particularly expensive to buy, so why would I or anyone else want to collect our own? Well I can’t speak for anyone else, but I get a real buzz from collecting seed, knowing that I can perpetuate a favourite plant without any outside involvement. Sometimes I’ll collect seed with a fair degree of certainty that I’ll be able to raise hundreds of little seedlings, and sometimes I do it for the challenge, as not all seeds are easy to propagate. If you want to have a go at seed collecting (and be warned, it’s a highly addictive pastime) then here are a few tips. You will need: Large paper bags – Must be paper. Plastic bags won’t do as they retain moisture and cause the seeds to develop fungus or go mouldy. You can buy them from eBay or make your own from brown paper and artist’s paper tape.

Felt pen - for labelling. This is important as you will forget what you’ve collected even if you think you won’t! Box or trug - for carrying the bags of seeds around the garden. Small pair of scissors or secateurs – for snipping the heads. Choose a dry day with little or no wind. Select a healthy, pest and disease-free plant with seedpods which look as though they’re about to split. Label a paper bag (it’s much easier to do this first) then cut off the seedhead and turn it upside down into the bag. Place the bag into a dry place and wait for the seeds to ripen. Check regularly. When most of the seedpods have opened, tip out the contents on to a dry surface and separate all the seeds from any remaining bits of pod. Store the clean seeds in a small, labelled paper bag or envelope, in a cool dry place until ready to be used. Easy seeds to collect and grow: Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist), Aquilegia (ladies bonnets), Papaver (Poppy), Digitalis Purpurea (Foxglove), Helianthus annuus (Sunflower), Cosmos bipinnatus (Cosmos), Lunaria annua (Honesty) You’ll soon discover many more. One pair is never enough We are often quite reliant on our spectacles. We may need spectacles to drive with or to focus up close for reading or to perform both tasks. For many of us we have doubts from time to time; why have so many people been killed in Ukraine; why doesn’t God intervene; why does he allow people to be killed or maimed in gang fights; why is there so much poverty, illness, homelessness, broken relationships, unhappiness, and mental illness in the world? It is easy to get despondent when so many of us around the world are praying for peace, love, hope and reconciliation and, when we don’t see this happen, doubt begins to creep in. Jesus reveals himself in so many ways, we just have to be receptive, look around us and see the beauty of creation. God might reveal himself to you through a neighbour, a friend, a situation but, it is okay to doubt, it is alright to be a “Thomas”. Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re a burden We live in an aging society. There are far more people aged over 65 in the UK today compared to a generation ago, and it’s a fact of life that our needs change as we get older. Why then, do we sometimes feel like a burden if we ask for help in our later years? Age UK did some research into why people struggle in later life. They found that older people often feel excluded, or they exclude themselves, from the world around them. This was because of a few things, such as people feeling their lives didn’t hold as much worth; feeling that the benefits of making a change were outweighed by the effort; and not knowing how to change things. We all have bad days. But if you’re struggling every day with household tasks like paying bills, cooking or using the bathroom, or your emotions are getting the better of you, then it’s time to act. For support and guidance, call Age UK’s Advice Line any day of the year on 0800 678 1602 (8am to 7pm). When it comes to help in the home, it’s common for people only to seek help as a result of a fall, accident or near-miss. It’s also common for a spouse, carer or family member to take action on someone else’s behalf. If you need adaptations in your home, such as new grab rails, ramps, or a walk-in bath, it can be hard to know where to start. If money is a concern, did you know there’s a grant available for those with a qualifying condition? Talk to the council or search online for the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). Changes to your home don’t need to look unsightly either. Just because you’re adding grab rails or a raised toilet in your bathroom for example, doesn’t mean it will look like a hospital bathroom. You could see it as an opportunity to refresh and update one of the most important rooms of your house. If you’re unsure about which supplier to use for home adaptations, talk to family and friends about who they might know. If you can get online, have a look on Checkatrade.com for local suppliers who other people recommend. Usually, smaller companies are cheaper than the bigger brands. Be proactive. If you think you need some extra guidance or support, talk to someone. Think about what might help to make everyday life easier for you and seek it out. You’re not alone – there are so many people facing these same challenges. Asking for help is the first step towards making your life healthier, easier and happier.

Is your internet supposed to be fast, but is actually slow? We see many posts on social media about people complaining about their internet connection. Often speed is quoted as not being as good as expected, and the provider is sometimes unfairly blamed for this. In our experience, there are many factors that people do not realise can affect their speeds. Firstly, the priority is getting a good speed into the house (to the router to be precise). If you have had broadband for many years, have you checked to see if a better package is available, either with your current provider, or possibly another provider? Having a modern router is also highly recommended. Full fibre is the best available connection but not all addresses can get it – yet. Also, not all providers offer full fibre broadband, so you really need to understand what is available to your address. For example, Plusnet currently do not offer full fibre broadband even if it is available in your road. Wi-fi is also a big problem in some properties due to factors such as internal walls, wood and other construction materials. Often, wi-fi will deteriorate with distance, so even one or two walls can substantially reduce the signal speed. Love to sing? Thursdays: We are looking for new members, particulary men folk as they are the foundation
of any choir. You will get all the support you need learning the music. The first 3 weeks are free. So don’t be shy, give us a try! The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society (BHCS) are a very friendly, non-auditioned choir based in Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset, and has currently 45 - 50 members with differing levels of musical ability and experience. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at the Burnham Methodist Church Hall in College Street. Traditionally there have been two performances each year, one in December, held in the town’s Catholic church, and the other in April usually held in St Andrew’s Church. The Spring Concert features an orchestral ensemble and guest soloists. During the summer, a few of us get together to have an informal Summer Sing. The choir works with musical director James Davies and professional accompanist Frances Webb for rehearsals and performances. We perform a repertoire of sacred, secular, classical, and stage music. INSURING YOUR BUSINESS When you run a business, you will no doubt recognise the need for insurance. It can provide compensation and peace of mind should things go wrong but can also represent a significant cost. There are many different types of insurance you need to consider. COMPULSORY INSURANCE: • Employers’ liability insurance is compulsory to cover your employees. By law you must have at least £5 million of cover and this must come from an authorised insurer, although a minimum of £10 million is now provided by most policies. You must display the certificate of insurance in the workplace. If your business is not a limited company, and you are the only employee or you only employ close family members, you do not need compulsory employers’ liability insurance. • Motor vehicles liability insurance is also compulsory and must cover third party insurance: this is the legal minimum. PUBLIC LIABILITY: Although strictly this is not compulsory you will almost certainly feel that you need cover under this heading. It covers claims for damages to third parties. PROPERTY AND THEFT: You can think about limiting cover to specific risks such as fire and flood or obtaining more general cover. Consider the level of cover you would need for the premises (if you own the building), equipment and stock. If you rent your premises, check that the landlord has the appropriate cover.
PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY: This is only likely to be necessary if you give advice which could make you liable. It protects against any loss suffered by your customers as a result of negligent advice. In some professions it is compulsory – examples being the law, accountancy and financial services. However, it is common in other sectors such as computer consultancy and publishing. BUSINESS INTERRUPTION: This covers compensation for lost profits and extra costs if your business is disrupted, due to say a fire. KEY MAN: A small business is often dependent on key members of staff. What would happen if they became seriously ill or died? SPECIALISED INSURANCE: A whole host of different policies cover a range of specialist situations – for example engineering insurance and computer policies. WORKING FROM HOME: If you are planning to start your new business from home then don’t assume that your normal household insurance will be enough. It will not usually cover business risks. It is possible to obtain special ‘working from home’ policies. SHOPPING AROUND: It may be stating the obvious but it is important to shop around to get the best deal. You should obtain several quotes and always be wary of cheap deals. A personal recommendation may be the best way to decide. Taxi driver who couldn’t walk unaided gears up to go back to work after losing four stone A Street taxi driver who was left unable to walk unaided is gearing up to go back to work nearly four stone lighter. Ruth Lewis, 55, couldn’t go anywhere without crutches after tipping the scales at nearly 17 stone – living off bakery snacks and white bread. Her sedentary lifestyle meant she was diagnosed with early onset Ruth Before Ruth After arthritis and two prolapsed discs on her spine. But when her doctor told her she was obese, she realised she needed to change her habits. Ruth joined the Saturday morning Slimming World in Street, where she has so far been supported to lose four stone – and walk completely unaided. “If I can do it, anyone can do it, because I was very fearful of any diet at all,” said Ruth. “I love my food and I didn’t want to give it up. But when you’re told you’re almost classed as obese, it’s a bit of a shock. I’ve completely changed my mindset around food and I’ve been given my freedom back. Losing the weight means I can have the back operation I need to give me even more mobility, which means I can get back to work.” Mum-of-one Ruth, who is married to Mark, would previously eat white bread with most meals and visit the local bakery every lunchtime as it stood opposite the taxi rank she worked from. “I didn’t like myself, I wasn’t happy,” she said. “I struggled to get around and I’d be out of breath in minutes. My thighs would rub together in the taxi so I’d get home and feel sore and uncomfortable. Then one day I saw a Slimming World poster and I knew it was time to do something about it. I’m so pleased that I did.” Since joining in September 2020, Ruth has dropped to a size 22 to a size 16 after learning how to change her eating habits through food optimising, still enjoying homemade burgers, steak and her favourite Slimming World chips. And her impressive weight loss means she can now wear her wedding ring again after having to take it off when it no longer fit. Ruth said: “I’ve always enjoyed my food but now I just enjoy it in a different way. To anyone who is thinking of joining but isn’t sure, don’t be frightened or scared to come along.”

A Somerset band who received international recognition last year are hoping to further build on their already impressive achievements Rileys Cove, an acoustic duo from Somerset, who wrote and released their debut single and EP ‘High’ early last year, saw the local pair receive the prestigious ISSA ‘International Band Single of the Year’ award for their original song ‘Without’. Olympic Triathlete gets her mojo back “I finally feel that I can make it in my sport” Athletic mentor and coach, mother of four, holder of Olympic medals for the Triathlon swimming, running and cycling event. That’s the high achieving life of Emma Fisher, 50, of Dorset, who started out as a showjumper and marathon runner. Not only are Grenville’s choirs back rehearsing and performing they have already – since October 2021 – raised over £10,000 which has been distributed to charities and local community groups from Cheltenham to Cornwall, with more support to come in the months ahead. Says Grenville; “It was difficult for so many freelance choir leaders, accompanists as well as the singing members themselves. Of course we all turned to Zoom and Sofa-Singing and, in truth, it’s simply not the same, singing at home to yourself, albeit with an enthusiastic conductor beaming at you from your laptop. “The well-being benefits of singing and ‘belonging’ to a music group are well documented and we have yet to learn the true impact of Lockdown on the mental health of the nation. “18 months ago, I thought that Christmas 2020 might see us back. Not so; it was then Christmas last year (2021) and, in England, we could begin to plan concerts and ‘distanced’ rehearsals again. Then came Omicron with its devastating effect on the concerts we hoped might take place.” Grenville adds; “I remember my first post-Zoom rehearsal was the Wells Good Afternoon Choir on a cold Tuesday in October. I went not knowing if anyone would be there! This was a choir of over 80 singers, pre-Covid. I was amazed to find 50 people of which many were new joiners. Wearing their smart new kit, they train on a grass pitch at Walton on the outskirts of Street, and use the Astroturf pitch at Strode College within Street itself during winter. The team started with just seven players. Numbers have now grown to a healthy group of 16 children, with members coming from surrounding villages and towns. “What’s brilliant about the Lions is the way it’s bringing children together in such a positive way as we emerge from the pandemic,” says Team Manager Chris Hegarty. “It’s great to see their football skills flourish and watch them bond as a team after such a testing time for all of them.” The team participates in the Yeovil District Mini League, playing seven-a-side matches in the Under 10s Division. Wessex Youth FC is coached and managed solely by volunteers and relies on vital sponsorship from local businesses to help meet increasing running costs including pitch fees, referee fees and registrations to the FA and leagues. “As a Street-based company we’re part of the local

Ratatouille The taste of summer for supper Method: Chop the aubergines into chunks about 2.5cm square. Cut the courgettes into 2.5cm thick slices. De-seed the peppers and cut these into bite-sized chunks. Peel the tomatoes - score a cross in the base of each tomato and place them in a heatproof bowl. Pour over enough boiling water to cover and set aside for one minute. Drain and, when cool enough to handle, peel away the skins. Roughly chop the flesh.
Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 30 mins to 1 hour Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 aubergines 4 small courgettes 2 red peppers 4 large tomatoes 4 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed ½ tsp sugar salt and freshly ground black pepper small bunch basil, torn
Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole dish and add the chopped onions. Cook gently for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden-brown and tender. Add the aubergines and courgettes and cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir in the peppers, garlic, sugar, some salt and pepper and half the basil and mix well. Cover and cook over a very gentle heat for 20 minutes. Add the tomatoes to the pan and cook for a further 10 minutes. Scatter the ratatouille with the remaining basil and serve with crusty garlic bread or Focaccia.
