humidity comes the increased risk of mould and associated respiratory problems Obviously, we can install a dehumidifier or an extractor fan, but nature also provides her own dehumidifiers and air purifiers in the form of certain house plants. The best houseplants for mould-prone areas are those which are efficient at absorbing moisture through their leaves. Not all plants are equally efficient at this task so I’ve selected four of the best. Each offers a different aesthetic so there should be one that’s perfect for you. English ivy is a native plant and it’s a low-cost option. It removes airborne mould, but also other toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene. It grows best in bright, indirect sunlight so is perfect for northfacing rooms. You need to keep it out of reach of toddlers and pets because the leaves are toxic.
A friend recently asked me whether there are any plants which might help with the humidity and mould problem in the bathroom and back bedroom of her Victorian house. It’s a problem that actually affects many British households. Many of our homes are old, and in our damp climate humidity can rise pretty quickly in the winter when all the windows are closed, and the radiators are on. With increased

Peace Lilies remind me of the film Hot Fuzz. Sergeant Angel, played by Sean Pegg loved his Peace Lily, and he had good reason. Not only are they elegant plants with stunning white flowers, but research conducted by NASA found the Peace Lily to be one of the top indoor plants for air purification. This tropical plant breaks down and neutralizes benzene, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide. One of the advantages of a Peace Lily is that it tells you when its thirsty by drooping and that it’s getting too much light by turning yellow. They love high humidity areas with indirect sunlight like most bathrooms and are great at preventing mould. Like English ivy the leaves and flowers are toxic. Palms add a tropical touch to a room and will efficiently reduce humidity. There are many varieties and some of the best are the lady palm, dwarf palm and reed palm. Indirect light is best and keep the surface of the soil moist but not wet. The Snake Plant is a wonderfully architectural succulent. Its evergreen sword-shaped leaves grow upright, and almost resemble artificial foliage. It’s great at air purification and is one of the few plants that can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night. This quality makes it particularly good for use in a bedroom as it can help regulate healthy airflow. Snake plants can absorb cancer-causing pollutants, including CO2, benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene and act as an effective defence against airborne allergies. Plants can’t solve a full-on damp problem and they won’t replace a built-in humidifier or extractor fan. But plants are a great way to improve the quality of the air in your home and they look beautiful too. Happy indoor gardening By Rachael Leverton

This year I will… I wonder how many of you have begun this year (or previous years) with words or thoughts like this? The break from ‘normality’ some of us enjoy over the Christmas period can give us time to stop and reflect, time to step back from the busyness and distractions of ‘the everyday’ and spend some time thinking about the bigger things and issues in our lives. As a result, we can come into the New Year with resolutions, really meaning to do things differently, whether we promise ourselves we will slow down, find a new job, read more, get fit, or even just go on that much delayed diet! Yet, as all of us know, it is far harder to keep resolutions than to make them. Over the years I have lost count of the number of my New Year’s resolutions that haven’t made it even into February, but still, despite that, I am a great fan of what lies behind them.

Jesus so often encouraged people to think and act differently to the usual ways in which they thought about and did things. Through stories, examples, gentle prompting and miracles, the Gospels tell us the ordinary people, fishermen, farmers, tax collectors and soldiers he spent his time with were encouraged to see a different way and consider taking a different path. Christians throughout the centuries since Jesus walked on the earth, inspired by His teachings, have continued to dare to live and think radically differently and continue to do so today. Whilst New Year’s resolutions aren’t mentioned in the Bible, there are plenty of stories of people’s lives and futures transformed by an encounter with God. In amongst the resumption of our ordinary, busy lives this month, maybe taking the time to find out more about the person and teaching of Jesus might be one New Year’s resolution that could be well worth trying to keep? Future eye care for you 2022 may be the year in which choices are made about what’s most important to us. COVID-19 certainly caused many of us to re-evaluate the things that really matter; the virus also continues to place an additional burden on NHS provision, including in independent eye care. These additional challenges mean that many High Street Opticians are ceasing to provide NHS funded Sight Tests completely. The NHS pays only £21 to the Optician to perform a basic Sight Test; unfortunately this fee is inadequate to cover the time involved, skill required, rent, rates, equipment, leases etc.

Good food and new beginnings Thoughts of New Years Eve conjures up for me images of food, celebration and new beginnings. By chance I was reminded recently that Samuel Pepys began writing his diary in January 1660 and was very fond of food and drink and of entertaining, making many references to this throughout his diary. It was written in a form of shorthand called “Zeiglographia” which had been invented by a man called Thomas Shelton in about 1626. It was widely used and Pepys had probably learned it when he attended Magdalene College, Cambridge as an undergraduate. Pepys was born in 1633, worked as a naval administrator and was responsible for the development of a professional naval service. His diary, which he wrote until 1703, when his eyesight started to fail, chronicles many of the events of the
time including the plague, the Great Fire of London as well as observations about some of the key figures of the era such as Sir Isaac Newton and Christopher Wren. It is also a valuable account of life and times for the social historian, including as it does, a mixture of personal entries about himself, his family and his health and tells us a lot about what was eaten and drunk at that time. On Christmas Day 1660, for example, he and his wife ate “a good shoulder of mutton and a chicken.” This was, however, simple fare compared to what was eaten when entertaining. On 26 January 1660, he writes about a family party for which “my wife had got ready a very fine dinner: viz. a dish of marrow-bones. A leg of mutton. A loin of veal. A dish of fowl, three pullets, and two dozen of larks, all in a dish. A great tart. A neat’s tongue. A dish of anchovies. A dish of prawns; and cheese.” I don’t suppose any of us will be sitting down to such a feast in 2022 but here’s hoping you all have a Happy New Year. Some machines allow you to manually vary how the drink is made, others identify each pod and will run the best program for that particular drink. Hearing study links hearing loss and dementia The head of one of Somerset’s most established independent hearing care providers has welcomed the findings of a new study which shows that correcting hearing loss could slow mental decline in later life. According to a group of researchers led by the UK’s leading hearing care academic, Dr Piers Dawes, of Manchester University, the European study found a reduction in the rate of cognitive (or mental) decline following the correction of hearing loss using hearing aids. And Simon Swindells, who’s Managing Director of South West Hearing Care Ltd, which operates in Street and the locality, says this information reinforces his message on the importance of regular hearing health checks. “A third of all people over the age of 55 have a significant hearing loss, yet because this loss is gradual, many people just don’t realise they have a problem until others around them begin to complain about having to repeat things,” says Simon. He explained that the latest research used memory tests before and after the fitting of hearing aids to over 2,000 people and, even after taking into account other factors, the rate of cognitive decline was reduced after hearing loss was corrected. “Experience already shows that the earlier a hearing-impaired person seeks help, their rehabilitation is quicker and easier, so it really is important that everyone has regular hearing tests to ensure any hearing loss is picked up and resolved,” he says, adding that anyone who’s unsure if they have problems can assess their need by asking themselves a few simple questions. Do people appear to mumble when they talk to you? Do you often have to ask people to repeat what they’ve said? Do you complain that actors or newsreaders on the TV or radio don’t speak as clearly as they used to? Do you struggle to hear in a restaurant or busy place? Do people complain that you have the TV, radio, or your music too loud? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, it is worth having accurate hearing test conducted by a professional audiologist. Dementia is a growing problem around the world and has a huge impact on those who have to live with it and their family and friends. Whilst experts say the most serious risk is ageing, it isn’t inevitable, so any factor that might reduce mental decline should be seized upon. All three books were published within ten months.” Each book is a standalone story, but Alison takes a scene or characters from the previous book as her inspiration for the next one. “Readers have commented that they love seeing how an aspect of one book carries over onto the next book.”

Ashcott Primary School, situated in a village between Street and Bridgwater, was chosen as the only school in the country to hold a press conference with comedian and writer David Baddiel. Mr Baddiel is famous to many a footie fan for his ‘Three Lions’ soccer song, which has become the unofficial England football anthem since 1996. Ashcott Primary School was given the opportunity to interview him about the publication of his new children’s book ‘(The Boy Who Got) Accidentally Famous’. During the Zoom press conference Mr Baddiel gave the Ashcott pupils an exclusive reading from his new book before answering questions ranging from his own school days to what he really thinks of that football song! He also revealed why he was almost expelled from school and his favourite Somerset locations.
