God made you to live a passionate life Passion energises our lives. It turns the impossible into possible. In fact if you don’t have any passion in your life you may feel like you’re just existing. Last month we looked how an unclear purpose can steal our passion. This month we will look at how: ‘An unbalanced schedule will cause you to lose your passion’. If you’re overworked you’re going to lose your passion. If you get tired you’re going to lose your passion. Vince Lombardi, one of the greatest sports coaches of all time said, “Fatigue makes cowards of all of us.” When you get tired you lose your zip, you lose your passion. Fatigue drains your energy. We all need a balance between rest and work, between input and between output. The Bible tells us that there is a rhythm to life, there is time and purpose for everything, a time to work and a time to rest; a time to strive, a time to have fun (Ecclesiastes 3 1-8). If you have no fun in your life you’re going to burn out. If you have no rest in your life you’re going to burn out. If you have nothing but constant work from morning til night and you’re a workaholic you’re going to lose your passion very, very quickly.
Many people I meet are always giving out, always sharing, always caring, you’re always thinking of others, you’re always care giving and when you live like this its often overseen to take time to recharge your own battery. That’s a bad thing. You need fun time in your life, you need rest in your life in order to keep your passion maintained. Don’t forget that 1 Corinthians 1:7-9 from the Bible says: “God, who got you started in this spiritual adventure, shares with us the life of His Son and our master Jesus. He will never give up on you. Never forget that!” God’s will for your life is a ‘spiritual adventure’. That is what faith is all about. He’s never going to give up on you. He’s going to help you to live your best life. Don’t let an unbalanced schedule steal your passion for living this adventure. Many may have visited the community exhibition of Meccano and Hornby models at Somerset Hall organised by us recently.

An Alfred Hitchcock Play Reading Friday 2nd September To continue our 100-year anniversary celebrations in style, on Friday 2nd September, Portishead Players will be holding a play reading at The Albion exploring the works of Alfred Hitchcock, the Master of Suspense! Spies, murder, love, and other trademarks of Alfred Hitchcock will come to life in the style of a 1940s radio broadcast. With The Lodger, Sabotage and The 39 Steps, Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play, written by Joe Landry, is a triple feature, complete with vintage commercials, that recreates a daring train chase, a serial killer’s ominous presence, and a devastating explosion. The play reading will be held at The Albion in Portishead on Friday 2nd September. Please arrive from 7pm onwards for a 7:30pm start. The script has various roles, both large and small, suitable for all.

The Memory Café is for anyone with dementia and memory problems, and those who care for them. It runs twice a month at Jubilee Day Centre, Slade Road, Portishead. He also loved to include more arcane words from his own childhood but less familiar to today’s children, such as blithering, and breeches. And he slipped biographical details into his stories, such as Matilda’s parrot being called Chopper, which was the name of his own little dog, and Matilda’s own name which was a name used for the tanks in WWll in North Africa where Dahl served. It’s celebrated every year on his birthday. Dahl was born in 1916, and was adventurous in his youth, working out in Tanzania then becoming a fighter pilot in WWll. In the 1950s he moved to Buckinghamshire and began to write children’s stories from a small hut at the bottom of his garden. He wrote more than twenty children’s classics, all penned by hand on the yellow paper of the American legal pads he favoured, and all illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake. They include Charlies and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda. Dahl has been called the World’s number one storyteller. One of the reasons for his popularity was his playful use of language. Taking a lesson from Shakespeare himself, Dahl invented thousands of words such as swashboggling and frobscottle, which were compiled in an illustrated dictionary in 2016 to celebrate the centenary of his birth. Dahl loved wordplay and would scribble words down swapping letters around and adopting spoonerisms and malapropisms. Dahl built his new words on familiar sounds, and rarely explained what they meant. Children instinctively work them out because they often sound like a word they already know. He also loved onomatopoeia, where a word is almost a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it, for example, lickswishy, squizzle, and fizzlecrump.

Holms Sailing Race – Saturday 10th September
Portishead Autumn Fair – Saturday 10th September
On the 10th September 2022 the annual Holms Sailing Race will take place starting and finishing at Battery Point, Portishead. Local residents will get a grandstand view of up to 50 yachts from Portishead, Bristol, Cardiff and Thornbury as they depart on the outgoing tide from 8 am onwards. Depending on the wind direction on the day, many of the boats will be flying their colourful spinnaker sails either on the way out or on the way back. Having left Portishead between 8 and 11 in the morning the boats go down channel and around both Flatholm and Steepholm the two islands located in the Bristol Channel between the end of Brean Down and Cardiff. They then make their way back up to Portishead on the new incoming tide. The race is as much a test of timing the tide correctly as it is of actual sailing skills. Boats will be passing back through the finish line off Battery Point throughout the afternoon and into the early evening. So, if the weather plays ball have a picnic on Battery Point and watch the yachts go sailing by! Anyone interested in sailing and racing with Portishead Cruising Club should get in touch with the membership secretary at pccsail.com

Gordano Civic Society Meeting – Monday 12th September The Gordano Civic Society is an active voice in Portishead and the surrounding Gordano valley too with its aim to enhance and retain the character of the town. The Society has a keen interest in retaining the heritage of the town and is active is preserving and restoring the history of the place, as well as looking forward and commenting on future plans for the town. Through our publication Posset Pieces, we record the history, people and industrial past of Portishead. We have recently been proactive in creating a heritage centre of the town, a place where our past is displayed, and also historic records archived. Recently opened, the Sandy Tebbutt Heritage centre is based in the Folk Hall in the High Street. We hold monthly meetings in Somerset Hall to listen to speakers on many topics of local interest and intrigue. The September meeting is on 12th, when Andre Coutanche will give a talk titled “A Little Kingdom” – The Harman’s Family Lundy 1925 – 1969. The mid-meeting break is the place to catch up on your friends and neighbours and share stories and knowledge of the area. Men Only Weight Management Wednesday 14th September A men only weight management programme is to run in Portishead in September in partnership with Bristol Robins Community Foundation. Annoyed at the lack of appreciation accorded to Britain’s outstanding cohort of Head Gardeners, Ambra resolved to set the record straight, and her book Head Gardeners was published in 2017. The response was overwhelming, both within the garden profession and among ordinary gardeners, and the book was named Book of the Year by the Garden Media Guild. Junk Journaling Workshop – Saturday 24th September As part of Quaker Week 2022, Portishead Quakers are offering a free ‘All Age’ Junk Journaling* workshop on Saturday 24th September starting at 2pm. This will take place at the Quaker Hall, 11 St. Mary’s Road, Portishead, BS206QP. The session will run for two hours with a tea and cake break in the middle. There will be a short talk about journaling, including Quaker Journaling. The afternoon will finish with a 10 minute Meeting for Worship in the Meeting House. All materials will be provided. However, if you have your own favourite cards (received Chrismas/Birthday cards, postcards), cut out pictures, used gift wrap paper etc do bring it along. All are welcome. Great Big Green Week – Saturday 24th September to Sunday 2nd October Fairtrade Portishead will take part in Great Big Green Week 2022. Come along and see us at the Methodist Church, High Street, Portishead from Saturday 24th September to Sunday 2nd October. With our display we want to highlight the impact of the climate crisis on the farmers that produce many of the foods that we enjoy but don’t grow here. These include bananas, coffee, tea and cocoa for chocolate. Those small scale farmers, many of them women, in low-income parts of the world are on the front line of the climate crisis, despite having contributed the least to cause it. The Fairtrade premium they receive when we buy Fairtrade goods helps improve their livelihoods, working conditions and provides training in ways to mitigate the impact of climate change. There will also be an opportunity to enter our free Fairtrade Hamper Raffle!

Pill Festival Band – Mondays Pill Festival Band is a lively, friendly, well-established orchestra serving North Somerset and the surrounding area. It is the only band or orchestra in the area that welcomes players of all ages and all abilities. Portishead Lions – New Members Welcome Portishead Lions have been serving the Portishead community and surrounding villages for 52 years. Working closely with other community groups the Lion volunteers’ motto is “We Serve”. Funds are raised through a range of exciting initiatives such as the Santa and Easter Floats, Birthday Surprise Flamingos, Car Boot Sales, Raffles and even Wing Walking. At least 80% of funds are actively returned to support a range of local community projects. The Lions Club are always seeking new members who want to help their community whilst also benefiting from being part of a fun and social local group. Successful Summer Show The Portishead Horticultural Society were delighted with the fantastic amount of support for their Summer Show, which was held on the last weekend of July. We had thousands of visitors over the two days and were blessed with good weather. Visitors were entertained by The Hogg Show, Shetland Performance Display Team with lots of music from Barnacle Bouys, Chicken Teddys and Mickey Finn. The children loved the Mobile Farm, Aldabra Tortoises and the Severn Counties Bird Society stand Despite the extremely hot weather leading up to the Show the exhibition tents were full of the most amazing floral and vegetable displays. The handicraft and cookery were also well supported and well done to all of the cup winners. The Show offered something for everyone from pre-school to senior citizens and as one visitor said “it was lovely to see all the community enjoying themselves and it is one of the events that makes Portishead so special”. We are back next year on the 29 and 30 July when we will be celebrating our 160th anniversary.

speakers, and have lunch. First to speak was Sarah Crew, Chief Constable (the first female) of Avon and Somerset Police. Her talk had particular relevance for WI as a whole, as it related to the work her force is doing to combat violence against women. We then had an excellent lunch, followed by the second guest speaker – Peaches Golding, Her Majesty’s LordLieutenant of the County and City of Bristol. Peaches told us about her role; the selection and appointment process, and an outline of the duties of the Queen’s representative for Bristol.
Portishead Yachts Race at Irish Regatta For the first time in Portishead Cruising Club’s (PCC) 90 year history, yachts from the racing fleet recently set sail for Cork, Ireland to compete in the prestigious Cork Week regatta. 2022 marks the delayed tricentenary of the Royal Cork Yacht Club and visiting boats were welcomed from far and wide to join in the celebrations of the oldest yacht club in the world. The 600 nautical mile round trip was not only a great adventure but also a test of boats, skippers and crew. Racing took place in the Irish Sea off Cork and involved a series of ‘round the cans’ courses where the skills of our local crews were tested alongside some of the best-drilled yacht crews from Ireland, the UK and further afield. Now safely back in Portishead after an exhilarating week’s racing, Simon Britten, skipper of lead Portishead boat Hero said, “The teams enjoyed some highly competitive racing in great conditions off the coast of Cork and we can’t wait to mount a return campaign next year.” If you’ve always hankered to be part of a racing yacht crew or want to get back into sailing then the team at PCC would love to hear from you! The fleet races in a number of club series across the year in the waters of the Bristol Channel – including some evenings during the summer. Singing Together Good For Your Wellbeing Wendy Sergeant has been running open access community choirs in Portishead, Clevedon and Pill since 2005. She has just completed a Professional Masters in Choir Leading at the Royal College of Music in Denmark and wrote a thesis on the deep connection which develops between people when they sing together and the physical, psychological, social and spiritual benefits of singing.
