Advertising & Enquiries:

I recently read an article that I feel shows the Micah challenge being practically outworked. “Dr. Ward when establishing the international charity ‘Feed the Hungry’ spent a great deal of his time thinking about justice. Specifically, he thought about the justice – or more accurately, the injustice – of food distribution around the world.

Love mercy: God has shown us such mercy. Our response should be to show mercy. Don’t put pressure on others to perform perfectly; love and accept them for who they are. We need to bring the message of the gospel of God’s love and mercy to as many as possible, including the prisoners, the homeless, the elderly and the poor.

Have you ever thought how you should live? How to maximise your life? How to live a life that impacts others? Micah presents a wonderful challenge: ‘To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God’ (6:8c). This threefold challenge gives us a new purpose for living. Firstly God wants us to:

Act justly: justice is very high up on God’s agenda. Injustice causes so much of the world’s suffering today. Is it possible that we as a community could make this a priority. We must do more to see that the poor, the marginalised and the voiceless receive justice.

He knew that food distribution was predicted to become even more unjust. Dr. Ward recognised the complex systems that kept starving people in one part of the world from accessing resources in another part of the world.

He once wrote to a friend, “Hundreds of thousands starve in India while grain enough to feed them all is stacked high on the plains of Alberta.”

Walk humbly with God: the challenge is to never see yourself as better, above, or more important than other people. A proud person overestimates their own importance. They cannot laugh at themselves. The Message bible translate v8 as ‘Don’t take yourself too seriously – take God seriously’. We cannot do any of this unless we are walking in a relationship with the Lord.

You may not be able to change the world but as Mother Teresa said “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” Let’s go and make a difference in God’s world.

For his part, acting justly meant working to correct this wrong. Regardless of the social and political systems that had created famines, he was determined to take action to end the suffering of hungry people. “

According to a recent report by The North London Waste Authority, around 22 million pieces of furniture are discarded each year in the UK. The majority of this furniture is sent directly to landfill, which equates to about 670,000 tonnes of furniture waste every year! What’s more, around 110,000 tonnes of discarded furniture is re-usable in its current condition!

PremTech Furniture Repairs – Protecting your pocket and the planet

Some of the reasons furniture is thrown away include, flat seat cushions, flat back and arm cushions, unsupportive interiors, worn leather, damaged/scuffed leather, loose stitching, broken frames, and recliners not working properly. These issues can be resolved by our experienced team of furniture technicians for a fraction of the price of buying new. We can make your furniture look and feel like new again. These repairs can either be carried out in your home or in our workshop, based in Clevedon. We offer a collection and delivery service for all workshop repairs.

If this is not possible, all wooden rails, spring clips, seat springs, ferrules, feet, screws, bolts and much more can be salvaged and reused by us for other repairs. Any parts of the sofa which cannot be re-used, will be recycled where possible so that only the bare minimum reaches landfill.

What I hadn’t bargained for was how hooked on art Ethan would become. He began to draw and paint a lot, seeking out different online tutorials. He mined YouTube and discovered the Udemy and Domestika platforms. These are massive open online course providers, which offer a seemingly endless variety of creative learning opportunities.

During the first lockdown my youngest son, then aged 10 discovered a cheerful artist providing free online art classes for kids and adults. Lovely Lindsay from thepaintrepublic.com, and her lively sons guided him through painting everything from dogs to pirate ships. She and her sons and their boisterous banter were

The courses on Udemy and Domestika are all vetted by the platforms and rated by the users. It’s easy to see which are the most popular courses, and the highest rated tutors. Ethan likes that he can go at his own pace. He can complete half an hour here and there or spend a whole Saturday afternoon learning how to use pencil crayons, or watercolours etc. The courses seem to be designed to span a month or six weeks but once you’ve paid for the course it’s yours to keep and revisit whenever you like. There’s no time limit, so there’s no Therush.cost

I must admit that prior to the lockdowns I had no idea about this rich vein of online creative learning, and after seeing how much pleasure Ethan gets from the courses I’ve just signed up for my first one. I’ve always fancied having a crack at Calligraphy!

These courses incurred financial outlay, so I began to pay more attention and look at the quality of what they offered, which on the whole is excellent, and the cost, which is very reasonable and great value for money, especially if you buy the courses when they are on special offer.

Railway Exhibition - Not To Be Missed! –Sunday 2nd October

This year sees the 125th anniversary of the original opening of the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Light Railway Weston-super-Marebetweenand Clevedon and the 115th anniversary of its completion to Portishead. To commemorate the anniversary, the WC&P Railway Group has organised an exhibition to be held on Sunday 2nd October in the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre next to Portishead Marina. Original artefacts from the railway will be on display, together with some of the best model railways in the Thecountry.WC&PR was an unusual independent light railway linking the three North Somerset coastal towns. It opened in 1897 and closed in 1940. It was quaint and colourful and was operated on a shoestring, which gave it great character. The railway ran through the streets in the centre of Clevedon. Because of its leisurely speed (25 mph max) and numerous small halts it became the butt of jokes such as that there were cowcatchers fitted to the rear to protect against overtaking cattle! But it was a much-loved railway amongst the locals. There will be a total of 14 layouts, several being award winners and appearing in national magazines. No less than four superb model layouts of the WC&P Railway itself – Weston-super-Mare (Ashcombe Road), Clevedon, River Yeo bridge, and Portishead – are being shown together for the first time. The Portishead one is brand new and having its first showing. A range of models will be on display – locomotives, coaches, wagons and even a Weston horse-bus. Slide shows of historic photos will be running all day and demonstrations of kit building will be given, plus lots more stands. There will be something for everyone at this unique exhibition. Further details can be found on

prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.

Jack did eventually free the Devil, but only on the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. It seems the Devil didn’t learn his lesson and the following year Jack tricked him again, this time into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised not to bother Jack for ten more years.

Pumpkin carving is steeped in folklore

Ghoulish pumpkins are iconic of Halloween season. I’ve always thought of them as an American import but in fact the practice of decorating jack-o’-lanterns originated across a much smaller expanse of water, in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes were the vegetables being carved. The name, Jack-o’lantern, originates from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to hollow out a turnip (I have…it resulted in a trip to A&E), but I can only imagine the delight of Irish immigrants, newly arrived in America, home of the pumpkin, on discovering this easily carved gourd. No wonder it became an integral part of Halloween Infestivities.caseyou were wondering about Stingy Jack, well he rather rashly invited the Devil to have a drink with him, but true to his name, didn’t want to pay for the beverages, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. However as soon as the Devil did so, Jack popped the coin into his pocket next to a silver cross, which

By Kate McCarthy

There are few people who don’t enjoy carving a Halloween lantern. Over the years it’s somehow become a tradition in our family to host a friendly pumpkin carving competition involving my sons and their teenage friends and quite a few of the parents! There are also hotdogs, sticky toffee pudding and wine, so something for everyone and all participants seems to enjoy the occasion, especially the judging. We have categories such as ‘best in show’, ‘ugliest, ‘most creative’ etc.

Jack O’ Lantern

Jack thought he was being very clever, but it all backfired on him because when he did finally die God refused him entry into heaven while the Devil, keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and is said to have been roaming the Earth his home-made lamp ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.”

I have been designing for over 10 years. In 2017 I earned my diploma from the renowned Garden Design School in Bristol, before that I finished a degree in Illustration. Since 2015 I have also been landscaping, learning the ropes from some very talented garden people.

During our consultation we really get to grips with what you want from your outdoor space and how you will use it.

‘What we do together’

Hi I’m Dan, I founded DRJP Designs in Bristol in 2017 with the pursuit of creating beautiful gardens that enhance your home and maximise your space outdoors. Whether I’m designing a garden renovation or just a seating area, my goal is to create aesthetically pleasing, liveable, practical spaces, based around you. No matter how big, small or unusual your ideas are, together we’ll transform them, designing the perfect outdoor space.

It is helpful if you have a rough idea of how much you want to spend on building your garden. My job is to design something that works, that fits your budget no matter how big or small.

To have your garden goals brought together in a workable plan, and with peace of mind to know exactly what is drawn will be built, then a garden design is for you.

I will make a proposal tailored to your needs with a quote. Once you have given the go ahead on my proposal, we can start to action it.

As well as plans ready for landscapers and builders, we can design the planting and much more.

When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. But there may be structural work needed too – AHM Installations can do it all. For example, you could create a bigger bathroom by removing a wall or create a new ensuite bathroom by adding a wall. If you wanted a more powerful shower the electric cables could need updating. A floor might need taking up to examine the pipework underneath. A good installations company doesn’t shy away from this type of work because it ensures that your bathroom is safe; that it meets regulations and that it works for you. The last thing you want in your bathroom is dodgy electrics!

“We created a completely new space from scratch”, said Charles Weeks, Bathroom Surveyor at AHM. The dividing wall was knocked down, a new ceiling was put in and a new extractor fan was installed. The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. The family are delighted with their new wetroom.

Updating your bathroom?

The Booth* family called AHM Installations for advice as their father, who uses a wheelchair, was struggling to access the bathroom easily and safely. They wanted to have their downstairs study and toilet knocked together to form one large wetroom. This may sound like a job for a builder, but AHM have all the skills and experience you need.

Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No, it’s not.

A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not, i.e., Howlers?!

1 The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!

One of the first things we learned in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler? Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.

4

Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. Cro-Magnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.

Poetry builds reading, speaking, and listening skills - Poetry is intended to be read aloud, repeated often, and shared. Children learn to attend both to the words they hear, the rhythm and rhyme, and also to think about what those words mean together.

Poetry encourages creativity - Writing poetry encourages children to think about and find meaning in their experiences and to be able to articulate them and think about things in a new way.

Poetry inspires writing - Poetry teaches children how to put words together to form meaning and context. They learn that choosing the right words is important.

Poetry introduces more complex language and vocabulary - Poetry allows teachers to show children how language can be broken down and evaluated in parts. This is useful for literacy. The rhymes teach phonics and letter sounds. The verses can be used to teach sentence structure and grammar. Children are exposed to new words in context and learn how those words are chosen for their effect to create imagery.

Good question. I remember asking the same one when I was a similar age. I don’t think I got a satisfactory answer then so in the name of research I spoke to a couple of English teachers.

Poetry books to get you started:

Revolting Rhymes – Roald Dahl (Author), Quentin Blake (Illustrator)

WHY do we have to learn poetry? My 11-year-old who has just started senior school was moaning about homework.

Portishead Choral Society is a friendly, choral society with close links to the community. They are dedicated to singing and providing performances of mostly classical music in four voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). They rehearse at Portishead Methodist Church, on Thursday evenings, starting at 7.30pm. The society is always keen to welcome singers of all voices: sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses. Prospective younger members are especially welcome. There are no formal auditions, and previous experience of choral singing isn’t required, although the ability to sing in tune, and to read music, even if only at a basic level, are helpful! If you are thinking about joining, please do go along to a rehearsal to see what it is like. You will be warmly welcomed.

Christmas is a Coming

Would you like to discover more about your family history? With free access to Ancestry.com and knowledgeable family history volunteers, Portishead Library is a great place to research your ancestors. Bring some basic information about your family and our friendly volunteers will assist you to find out more. The sessions are relaxed and informal and will be tailored to individual needs.

Clear out the food cupboards Make room for festive goodies. Throw out all out-of-date items and things you know will never be eaten, even in a zombie apocalypse.

Clear out the toy cupboards Encourage your children to sort out toys they no longer play with and donate them to charity. It not only makes space for Christmas gifts, but it will also hopefully teach them compassion.

Write any cards and annual letters It’s less of a chore than it used to be as more people eschew cards in favour of e-cards or texting, but for many people a card with a brief personal message is a welcome arrival in the post. If you get a few written every week in November then come December you can relax and feel

Sorry to mention this but Christmas is right around the corner. Get ahead of the game with our checklist.Christmas-seasonpre-

Bowling Season Over

Order meat early Farmers’ markets and shops are always packed out by the first week in December.

The Portishead Bowling Club season is now over. The Club competitions went well (despite some very hot weather). The Open day was extremely successful with lots of people trying bowls for the first time and we were delighted when some decided to join us as new members. They are now looking forward to playing in the 2023 Season. We will be resuming play in early April when we would welcome more new members.
