It’s tempting to tidy up all the browning plant stems but try not to get carried away. Leave some standing because they provide important habitats for wildlife. I do harvest a few seedheads each year: poppies, nigella, and alliums are my favourites. I cut them, leaving their long stems intact and put the heads inside a paper bag, then hang the bunches inside to dry. The ripe seeds fall into the bag and can be labelled and kept for sowing next year’s free plants! The decorative heads look nice in a vase too.

...and mellow fruitfulness, states the first line of the famous Keats poem. There is something rather lovely about autumn. The days are cooler but often sunny, yet the ground is more moist and so easier to dig. It’s the perfect time of year for gardening.

borders and let them rot naturally. They soon break down and are incorporated into the soil by worms. I still hanker after my own leaf mould crates though.
My neighbour (who is retired) makes fabulous leaf mould in meshed cages he’s constructed himself. I take a ‘busy mum’ approach to fallen leaves. I run them over with a mower then rake the resulting confetti off my lawn into the flower beds and
If you planted any perennials a few years ago they might need to be divided. Take a look at your plants. If they are dying off in the middle but have good growth around the edges, it’s time to lift and divide. Dig up the root ball of the plant, brush and pull off excess soil and set on to a plastic ground sheet. Pull (or use a garden fork to prise) apart the football into three or four clumps, each with a section of healthy shoots and roots. Replant the ’new’ plants elsewhere in the garden or try swapping plants with friends. Don’t forget to keep them well-watered until they have become established.
If you feel that your garden needs a little more colour heading into winter add a couple of dogwood shrubs into your borders. There are striking red and yellow varieties available. You can also plant sedum, Japanese anemones (Liriope) and Michaelmas daises (Aster). These flower well into late autumn and early winter.
Finally, a little planning for next year goes a long way. October is the perfect time to plant daffodil, crocus, hyacinth and allium bulbs for next spring.
Updating your bathroom?
AHM Installations takes the hassle out of finding the right tradespeople

· Member of the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) · Check-a-trade score 10/10 (May 2021)

The Booth* family called AHM Installations for advice as their father, who uses a wheelchair, was struggling to access the bathroom easily and safely. They wanted to have their downstairs study and toilet knocked together to form one large wetroom. This may sound like a job for a builder, but AHM have all the skills and experience you need.
TO ADVERTISE CALL 01275 400160

“We created a completely new space from scratch”, said Charles Weeks, Bathroom Surveyor at AHM. The dividing wall was knocked down, a new ceiling was put in and a new extractor fan was installed. The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. The family are delighted with their new wetroom.
When you’re updating your bathroom, naturally the style of shower, basin and tiles are important. But there may be structural work needed too – AHM Installations can do it all. For example, you could create a bigger bathroom by removing a wall or create a new ensuite bathroom by adding a wall. If you wanted a more powerful shower the electric cables could need updating. A floor might need taking up to examine the pipework underneath. A good installations company doesn’t shy away from this type of work because it ensures that your bathroom is safe; that it meets regulations and that it works for you. The last thing you want in your bathroom is dodgy electrics!

“AHM is an absolutely wonderful company – we couldn’t recommend it more. It’s made such a difference to Dad and to all of us. Amazing designers and the men who fitted it were wonderful, polite and patient.” AHM often have jobs that require structural work. AHM take the hassle out of organising the tradespeople you need to complete the job. All our fitters are members of BIKBBI which means they are DBS checked, fully insured and continually monitored. AHM Installations is a family-run firm installing safe, affordable bathrooms for people with limited mobility. Call us on 01275 403188 to discuss your needs.

A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not, i.e., Howlers?!

One of the first things we learned in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler? Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.

Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. Cro-Magnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.

1. The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!

2.
Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No, it’s not.

Hello neighbours, I’m and removal work
This year sees the 125th anniversary of the original opening of the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Light Railway between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon and the 115th anniversary of its completion to ToPortishead.commemorate
the anniversary, the WC&P Railway Group has organised an exhibition to be held on Sunday 2nd October in the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre next to Portishead Marina. Original artefacts from the railway will be on display, together with some of the best model railways in the country.

The WC&PR was an unusual independent light railway linking the three North Somerset coastal towns. It opened in 1897 and closed in 1940. It was quaint and colourful and was operated on a shoestring, which gave it great character. The railway ran through the streets in the centre of Clevedon. Because of its leisurely speed (25 mph max) and numerous small halts it became the butt of jokes such as that there were cowcatchers fitted to the rear to protect against overtaking cattle! But it was a much-loved railway amongst the locals.
There will be something for everyone at this unique exhibition. Further details can be found on www.wcprgroup.org.uk
A range of models will be on display – locomotives, coaches, wagons and even a Weston horse-bus. Slide shows of historic photos will be running all day and demonstrations of kit building will be given, plus lots more stands.

I must admit that prior to the lockdowns I had no idea about this rich vein of online creative learning, and after seeing how much pleasure Ethan gets from the courses I’ve just signed up for my first one. I’ve always fancied having a crack at Calligraphy!
During the first lockdown my youngest son, then aged 10 discovered a cheerful artist providing free online art classes for kids and adults. Lovely Lindsay from thepaintrepublic.com, and her lively sons guided him through painting everything from dogs to pirate ships. She and her sons and their boisterous banter were the tonic a little boy missing his friends needed. I will always be grateful to Lindsay for her generosity of spirit during those difficult times.

Poetry encourages creativity - Writing poetry encourages children to think about and find meaning in their experiences and to be able to articulate them and think about things in a new way.

Poetry introduces more complex language and vocabulary - Poetry allows teachers to show children how language can be broken down and evaluated in parts. This is useful for literacy. The rhymes teach phonics and letter sounds. The verses can be used to teach sentence structure and grammar. Children are exposed to new words in context and learn how those words are chosen for their effect to create imagery.
Good question. I remember asking the same one when I was a similar age. I don’t think I got a satisfactory answer then so in the name of research I spoke to a couple of English teachers.

Poetry builds reading, speaking, and listening skills - Poetry is intended to be read aloud, repeated often, and shared. Children learn to attend both to the words they hear, the rhythm and rhyme, and also to think about what those words mean together.

This will display the name of the operating system. If it does not show Catalina, you can usually update via the App Store App by searching for Catalina. Please note that not all Macs will update to the latest MacOS, especially those over 7 years old, but there will still be minor updates available via the “Software Update” button within the “About this Mac” screen.
For Android phones and tablets: Open up your phone’s settings app, near the bottom tap System > System Update and install any updates that are shown as available.

We understand that completing the above is not always easy, so should you need any help with updating, please see our advert on this page, as we can visit to assist getting everything up to date and can also give the device a health check at the same time.

For Apple phones and tablets: Click Settings > General > Software Update – the latest update at the time of writing is iOS 15.6.1 so please update to this or a newer update if available. For older devices that cannot be updated, it would be wise to consider replacing them, as they could be a security risk, and are likely not performing particularly well.

According to a recent report by The North London Waste Authority, around 22 million pieces of furniture are discarded each year in the UK. The majority of this furniture is sent directly to landfill, which equates to about 670,000 tonnes of furniture waste every year! What’s more, around 110,000 tonnes of discarded furniture is re-usable in its current condition!

Research has also revealed that less than 1 in 10 people consider repairing their furniture to extend its life span. We, at PremTech Furniture Repairs, want to change this throw away mindset and make a difference by offering a wide range of repairs which can make your furniture look and feel like new again. Not only does this prevent furniture from being unnecessarily discarded, but it helps keep expenses down at a time where the cost of living is on the increase.
PremTech Furniture Repairs – Protecting your pocket and the planet

As part of our commitment to reducing sofa waste, we are pleased to now offer a reasonably priced collection service for your unwanted/unrepairable sofa’s. There are few people who don’t enjoy carving a Halloween lantern. Over the years it’s somehow become a tradition in our family to host a friendly pumpkin carving competition involving my sons and

Ghoulish pumpkins are iconic of Halloween season. I’ve always thought of them as an American import but in fact the practice of decorating jack-o’-lanterns originated across a much smaller expanse of water, in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes were the vegetables being carved. The name, Jack-o’lantern, originates from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to hollow out a turnip (I have…it resulted in a trip to A&E), but I can only imagine the delight of Irish immigrants, newly arrived in America, home of the pumpkin, on discovering this easily carved gourd. No wonder it became an integral part of Halloween Infestivities.caseyou
Jack did eventually free the Devil, but only on the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. It seems the Devil didn’t learn his lesson and the following year Jack tricked him again, this time into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised not to bother Jack for ten more years.
Jack thought he was being very clever, but it all backfired on him because when he did finally die God refused him entry into heaven while the Devil, keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and is said to have been roaming the Earth his home-made lamp ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.”
Jack O’ Lantern Pumpkin carving is steeped in folklore

were wondering about Stingy Jack, well he rather rashly invited the Devil to have a drink with him, but true to his name, didn’t want to pay for the beverages, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. However as soon as the Devil did so, Jack popped the coin into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.

We are an ageing group now and would like to see more people of all ages willing to give as
The volunteer group was formed in September 2003 when the townspeople noticed the appalling state of the river. Christened the Land Yeo Friends, the group includes people with expertise taking in many aspects of river work, wildlife conservation, not to mention photography, journalism etc.
The Land Yeo River, today is vastly improved with burgeoning invertebrates and the resulting profusion of fish, birds and other wildlife. The Land Yeo Friends are still here acting as guardians and helping to clean the river. There is always some new threat which tries to take the river away from its rural idyll. At the moment it is a new weed invasion which is impeding flow and therefore causing contaminants to build up, and also stopping the rivers essential job of removing surface water flooding should there be a sudden deluge, which in these times of climate change is an ever-present threat.

Poets’ Walk in Clevedon has particular historic significance and recognizes the many nationally recognized poets who have visited Clevedon over past years. This celebratory project of The Civic Society upgrades the start of Poets’ Walk with a series of granite steps which are engraved with words from the famous elegy In Memoriam A.H.H. by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The stanza used on the steps commemorates the return of the body of Arthur Henry Hallam to Clevedon for interment at St. Andrew’s Church after he tragically died in Vienna in 1833 aged only 22.

Earlier this year we removed a keep left bollard which had found its way into the river, a job for us volunteers when none of the statutory organisations seemed prepared to deal with it!

In the early days, the river was an uncared for, litter strewn, smelly, muddy stream, starved of flow. Very few fish could be seen, but there was plenty of plastic and other rubbish. In time we realised that we needed a boat in order to get to some of the rubbish, so we raised the money ourselves and purchased a small boat and trailer, which has greatly improved our ability to reach all the rubbish.

In recent years we have introduced a new walk in Clevedon and gone a long way in promoting funding for the project ‘The Two Rivers Walk’ which takes in parts of The Land Yeo and Blind Yeo rivers.
