The summer holidays are upon us, and I’m sure all you parents are loving every minute of it and dreading them coming to an end! But just in case you need some ideas of what to do, have a read through and see what’s going on locally for you and the kids. The library annual summer reading challenge is back, which I can remember doing with my children, over 15 years ago!! Plus, The Clevedon Flower Show is a great family event. If it’s raining maybe our Kids Page inside will keep them occupied for a while.

Garden View 9th - 14th August is National Allotments Week During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment.

During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy!

But with food prices soaring and less produce available on the supermarket shelves, added to an increased interest in plant-based diets and locally sourced food, allotments are enjoying a popularity surge.

And the statistics in the news are scary. The number of food banks is growing exponentially as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, yet the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the most consumers.

Is it any wonder that so many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our

grandparents and grow our own food? But growing food requires space, and modern housing often means tiny gardens. This is where allotments come into their own.

Allotments don’t just benefit the humans who tend them. Each plot is a complex web of plants, microorganisms, fungi, insects, and animals supporting pollination and offering a refuge for wildlife. To celebrate all the lovely bugs and beasties on Britain’s allotments, this year’s National Allotments Week is encouraging gardeners to take part in a mini-beast monitoring survey. Bugs are really important to the healthy functioning of an allotments. They pollinate fruit and veg, control pests, and improve the soil.

They are nature’s vital helpers. To take part in the survey visit the website listed below.

To acquire an allotment, simply approach your council. Price and availability varies around the country and in some areas there are waiting lists.

But councils across the country are taking allotments and community gardens much more seriously now, and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. If an available plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with.

Updating your bathroom?

The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job. Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use. The family are delighted with their new wetroom.

Three Top Summer Kitchen Tips from Matt Reilly, OvenGleamers 1. Tear basil rather than cutting it?

Chefs often say that you must tear basil, rather than cut it with a knife, to get the best flavour. Nope. The flavours in basil are primarily contained within the cells of the leaf. If you tear it, it tends to come apart between the cells but if you cut the leaf, you will break open the cells releasing the flavour. This makes the most difference when you are using the basil raw eg in a tomato salad.

Best to wash the basil, pat dry with paper towels, and remove the leaves from the stem. Stack several leaves together and roll into a cylinder, then cut crossways into thin strips.

2. Should I use foil on the base of my Oven?

Many people line their grill pan or the bottom of the oven with aluminum foil to keep their cookers cleaner. This becomes heavily coated in grease and smells revolting! But it actually damages the enamel in the grill pan and on the base of the oven. The foil creates a superheating effect by reflecting the heat back onto the base of the oven or grill pan which then causes enamel damage.

I recommend using an oven liner made from PTFE with a non-stick coating. This will catch any food drips keeping the bottom of the oven/grill pan clean. Remember to take the oven liner out regularly and wash it in warm soapy water.

3 “Hot pan - cold oil - prevents sticking” Is this mantra really the best way to prevent food from sticking to the pan when sautéing or stir-frying.

The idea is that you heat up the pan first then add the cold oil and almost immediately add the food and that will stop it sticking. What you really want is a “hot pan, hot oil”. When you add cold oil, it heats up almost instantly when added to the hot pan – giving you “hot pan, hot oil”. You get the same results if you heat the oil along with the pan so take your pick – they both work!

It’s totally free to take part; children just sign up at the library and if they read any 6 library books of their choice, they will collect a reward per book; if they complete the challenge by Saturday 10th September, they will receive a certificate and medal (whilst stocks last).

Implementing a hybrid working policy can be beneficial for businesses and employees - helping staff retention, attracting new talent and developing your business culture.

Any policy needs be tailored to your business requirements. Points to consider: 1. The policy should state if the hybrid working arrangement is a formal/permanent change to existing terms of employment or an informal arrangement that can be altered by the business.

Exhibition of Meccano Construction Sets, Hornby Model Railways, Dinky Toys & Bayko building sets – Saturday 13th August Frank Hornby took out his first Patent for a construction set in 1901. This became the worldfamous ‘Meccano’ range soon afterwards to which was added Hornby trains, Dinky die-cast vehicles, Bayko and Dinky Builder construction sets. The exhibition will include superb Meccano models, one of which is Nationally recognised, working Hornby train layouts in ‘0’Gauge Electric, ‘O’ Gauge Clockwork and ‘Dublo’ (00 Gauge), Bayko architectural models and sets plus the national favourite Dinky Toy scale vehicles, aircraft, farming and ship diecast models. As an additional special exhibit, 25 superb ‘0’ Gauge scale models of LSWR steam locomotives will be on view.

Cruse Bereavement – Friday 19th August Cruse Bereavement support hold a Drop-in session in Clevedon at Princes Road Community Centre month. 10 am to 12 noon. Those who have attended the Cruse Drop-in say, that meeting others in a similar situation has been beneficial to them. Some who come were bereaved several years ago but have welcomed the opportunity to receive support in their situation perhaps for the first time. When is the time to replace an ageing computer?

We often get asked the question “How long will a computer last?” – generally the life of a computer seems to range from about 3 years to 10 years depending on the quality of components and how it is used. External factors can also influence this, such as power surges and even drink spillages. One way to extend the life of a computer is to replace ageing or slow parts, but due to the pace of improving technology, sometimes replacement is the best long term solution.

It is wise and much safer to carry out planned computer replacements instead of waiting until they break down and stop functioning from old age, which makes replacing much harder, and risks data loss. When a less old computer needs repair, a replacement can still be the best option, such as when repair costs meet or exceed the cost of a new computer. A troublesome computer should be looked at by an experienced engineer who can help determine the best cost-effective way forward.

With the release of Windows 11 and its strict hardware requirements, most computers older than 3 years cannot upgrade, so this becomes another factor which can make a new computer the better option over investing in repairs. Be Scam Wise with U3A – Tuesday 23rd August Woodspring u3a area includes all the towns and villages in and around Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea, Backwell and Yatton. U3a provides lots of activities for people who are retired or approaching retirement. Membership has increased in this last year and so has the list of activities. We are always looking to start new groups and welcome more members. It is an excellent way to meet people and make friends.

It takes place between 10am and 4pm and there will be lots of fun things to do, plus stalls, cream teas, ploughman’s lunch, cakes and cookies.

There will be an information tent for people to learn about rabbits and guinea pigs plus how you can help the rescue by becoming a foster carer or sponsoring a rabbit or guinea pig. On the day there will be a selection of animals looking for new homes for people to see.

In England around one in twenty adults cannot read well enough to manage day-to-day tasks. The lack of reading skills can impact on their lives in many ways. What’s more, they have to live with the daily fear of being ‘found out’ in a society where most of us take reading for granted.

But we can offer hope for those adults who, for whatever reason, didn’t pick up this basic skill in childhood. Read Easy North Somerset offers free, one-to-one coaching to adults who can’t read. Our trained volunteer coaches lead the learners through a tried and tested programme in a confidential, supportive environment, in-person or online.

Working one-to-one, the learners avoid any anxiety about the classroom and progress at their own pace.

Read Easy North is now expanding the service to Clevedon, Nailsea, Portishead and the villages across North Somerset.

Escape Daily Knee or Hip Pain Local charity Age UK Somerset is offering a chance to ESCAPE-pain.

ESCAPE-pain is a free, group-based rehabilitation program being delivered in Worle and Bleadon.

These sessions are for people over 45 who have had arthritic hip or knee pain for at least 3 months. The classes are suitable for those who are independently mobile and are willing to commit to attending twice weekly for six weeks. Each class includes a short education session as well as some physical activity. The programme has been clinically proven to reduce pain, increase function, improve mental well-being and self-confidence.

One happy participant stated, “It has really changed my life in the way that I manage my knee pain, and the confidence it has given me.”

Clevedon Yeo Rotary Club Local Rotary club fundraising helps support those in need at home and abroad. As a result of numerous

local fundraising initiatives including a bucket collection in Queens Square, a fun quiz, a Jubilee cream tea, a presentation to a local retirement complex and stewarding / catering support to a local run/swim, the Clevedon Yeo Rotary club has been able to send £2200 to the DEC Ukraine appeal and will be making other substantial donations locally including to, amongst others, the local Foodbank.

Club President Bob Sprange said “Our members have been tremendously active in the last few weeks.

Our popular quiz night together with numerous other initiatives have contributed to a fantastic total close to £2,000, in addition to the funds that we have already sent to the Ukraine appeal, which will be distributed locally to initiatives and organisations requiring support including the foodbank. We also assisted in stewarding at the recent literary festival.

Clevedon Care Needs Volunteer Drivers Clevedon Care is a registered charity, set up to help people in the BS21 postcode area access medical appointments.

We urgently require volunteer drivers. Journey times vary and drivers can do those that fit in with other commitments.

The service is friendly, affordable, reliable, and easy to access. The driver, using his or her own car, will pick them up from their home, take them to the appointment, be it a local GP surgery, or hospital appointment further afield and then return them home when finished.

If you need to arrange transport, please contact the office on 01275 343677 open Monday-Friday mornings from 9:30am until 12:30pm.

Bereavement Support Walk & Talk – Each month Clevedon Cruse Bereavement support offers a Walk and Talk. The walks which last approximately one hour, are an extension of the Drop-in Sessions. 30ks Wilder is back!

Avon Wildlife Trust wants to challenge you to complete 30ks Wilder! Can you do 30 kilometres of activity this September to raise money for local wildlife?

The activity can be any activity from walking to cycling, running to swimming, or skipping to skating, you just need to complete 30ks by the end of the month. You can compete the challenge over the course of the month, on weekends, or even in just one day – and you can sign up on your own or with a group to spread the load!

Clevedon Lions Dream Scheme Donation At the Clevedon Lions Club monthly meeting held in June, we were visited by Emy Buxton on behalf of Little Fridge Toddlers and The Fridge youth group. Both groups are held at Christchurch Clevedon.

Emy joined us to thank us for our donation of £500.00 from our annual Dream Scheme.

WI – Inspiring women Early June, we celebrated in Her Majesty the Queen’s 70 years as Monarch. WI members joined in celebrations at their local institutes – there were cream teas, picnics, bunting, dressing as if attending a Royal Garden Party, knitting corgis – all sorts of activities. These celebrations had a bonus for WI members; we were celebrating a fellow member.

The Queen has been a WI member for 79 years (yes, longer than her reign).

The donation has been used to purchase new, cushioned floor mats for use at both Little Fish Toddlers and The Fridge. The donation also allowed the group to purchase a new toy kitchen which has proved to be extremely popular.

The WI is the largest voluntary women’s organization in the UK and is open to all women aged 18 or over. The first WI to open in the UK was Anglesey in 1915. Two years later a National Federation of WIs was formed; a democratic, non-party political and voluntary organization. Its structure is three tiered – local, county, and national.

Little Fish Toddlers is for 0-4 year olds and provides space for the children to learn social skills and develop their communication though song. It also provides valuable support for families with young children.

Membership at local level gives the opportunity to meet other women and make friends, to participate in community events, hear speakers talk on a wide range of subjects (educational, humorous, celebrity), and have a cup of tea or coffee (and often cake too).

The Fridge group provides fun and connection for 7–11 year-olds who have missed out on many opportunities over the last couple of years. It also gives coaching to support children who are struggling at school

The county tier is Avon Federation of Women’s Institutes and within this there are 99 local institutes.

Avon Federation works to advise and enhance local WIs, and hosts events that all members in the area can attend.

Avon Federation is holding its Annual meeting at BAWA, Southmead Road, Bristol on Tuesday 27th September 2022. Our main guest speaker will be the Reverend Kate Botley.

Model Flying Club The Avon Model Flying Club (AMARC) has been in existence for over forty-five years and currently has a membership of over 80. If you want to learn more about our club, you can take part in one of our regular meetings. You do not have to be a member to attend the meeting.

Based in Weston in Gordano club members fly most days from 10:00 to dusk. We fly aircraft, helicopters, gliders and drones. Don’t worry if you can’t fly, we have qualified instructors and experienced members who are only too willing to help get you off to a flying start. We welcome juniors and adults.

Lions Brass For Youth Lions Brass 4 Youth runs four levels of band ranging from starter band where young people are provided with a loan instrument and free tuition in a band environment for the first year. Members of this band start from scratch, having never played a note before. We then have three further levels of band with the youth band having an entry requirement of at least grade 5.
