Are your devices up to date?

With recent news that Apple devices could be exploited by hackers, we felt it a timely reminder to check if your computers, phones and tablets are fully up to date. Without these updates, devices could be at risk, even if they have up to date anti-virus software, so by manually checking and making sure all updates are installed, this will help keep your devices secure.

For Apple phones and tablets: Click Settings > General > Software Update – the latest update at the time of writing is iOS 15.6.1 so please update to this or a newer update if available. For older devices that cannot be updated, it would be wise to consider replacing them, as they could be a security risk, and are likely not performing particularly well.

For Apple computers: The current MacOS is called “Catalina” (also likely to be replaced in September) - From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose “About This Mac”. This will display the name of the operating system. If it does not show Catalina, you can usually update via the App Store App by searching for Catalina. Please note that not all Macs will update to the latest MacOS, especially those over 7 years old, but there will still be minor updates available via the “Software Update” button within the “About this Mac” screen.

For Android phones and tablets: Open up your phone’s settings app, near the bottom tap System > System Update and install any updates that are shown as available.

For Window computers: Click the Start Button, then Settings, then Windows Update. You should install any mentioned updates and restart when prompted, then re-visit the same screen to see if there are any further updates. For any computers not running Windows 11, we strongly suggest upgrading.

We are a singing group who are part of the U3A and rehearse on Monday afternoons at St Andrew’s Church Hall singing a variety of music from musicals and shows, pop songs old and new with the occasional classical piece mainly in three parts, sopranos, altos, and men. Every Monday – The Arc The Arc has started back up again at the Methodist church hall in College Street from 2:00pm until 4:00pm.

If you want a bit of company a cup of tea and cake/ biscuit, you are welcome. We either have a natter, play games, or do some craft activities - it all depends on what you would like to do.

Burnham Netball Club Every Monday and Tuesdays – Burnham Netball Club If you are interested in joining our friendly lady’s netball club, please join our Facebook group, (Highbridge, Burnham, Berrow Netball club) where we show all the games we run weekly. Updating your bathroom?

The fuse board, which was previously situated in the study, was moved out into the hallway – a complex electrical job.

Light switches were moved and a shaving socket was added, all to make the room easier for Mr Booth to use.

The family are delighted with their new wetroom.

Garden View This month – Seasons of mist… ...and mellow fruitfulness, states the first line of the famous Keats poem. There is something rather lovely about autumn. The days are cooler but often sunny, yet the ground is more moist and so easier to dig. It’s the perfect time of year for gardening.

It’s tempting to tidy up all the browning plant stems but try not to get carried away.

Leave some standing because they provide important habitats for wildlife. I do harvest a few seedheads each year: poppies, nigella, and alliums are my favourites.

I cut them, leaving their long stems intact and put the heads inside a paper bag, then hang the bunches inside to dry. The ripe seeds fall into the bag and can be labelled and kept for sowing next year’s free plants!

The decorative heads look nice in a vase too.

My neighbour (who is retired) makes fabulous leaf mould in meshed cages he’s constructed himself.

I take a ‘busy mum’ approach to fallen leaves. I run them over with a mower then rake the resulting confetti off my lawn into the flower beds and borders and let them rot naturally. They soon break down and are

incorporated into the soil by worms. I still hanker after my own leaf mould crates though.

If you planted any perennials a few years ago they might need to be divided. Take a look at your plants. If they are dying off in the middle but have good growth around the edges, it’s time to lift and divide. Dig up the root ball of the plant, brush and pull off excess soil and set on to a plastic ground sheet. Pull (or use a garden fork to prise) apart the football into three or four clumps, each with a section of healthy shoots and roots. Replant the ’new’ plants elsewhere in the garden or try swapping plants with friends. Don’t forget to keep them well-watered until they have become established.

If you feel that your garden needs a little more colour heading into winter add a couple of dogwood shrubs into your borders. There are striking red and yellow varieties available. You can also plant sedum, Japanese anemones (Liriope) and Michaelmas daises (Aster). These flower well into late autumn and early winter.

Finally, a little planning for next year goes a long way.

October is the perfect time to plant daffodil, crocus, hyacinth and allium bulbs for next spring.

The hubs are now getting known for their important role in providing access to the Village Agent and Citizens Advice.

Our main aim is to support those who are lonely and isolated in our communities. It is clear that our transport systems are not effective in meeting local need. We will be assessing how we can provide that support. Watch this space!

We are also working closely with the Residents Association to rebuild links throughout the community through providing family events to bring people together. National Poetry Day

Poetry introduces more complex language and vocabulary - Poetry allows teachers to show children how language can be broken down and evaluated in parts. This is useful for literacy. The rhymes teach phonics and letter sounds. The verses can be used to teach sentence structure and grammar. Children are exposed to new words in context and learn how those words are chosen for their effect to create imagery.

Poetry inspires writing - Poetry teaches children how to put words together to form meaning and context.

They learn that choosing the right words is important.

WHY do we have to learn poetry? My 11-year-old who has just started senior school was moaning about homework.

Good question. I remember asking the same one when I was a similar age. I don’t think I got a satisfactory answer then so in the name of research I spoke to a couple of English teachers.

Poetry builds reading, speaking, and listening skills - Poetry is intended to be read aloud, repeated often, and shared. Children learn to attend both to the words they hear, the rhythm and rhyme, and also to think

Every Friday - HBoS Local Pantry The Pantry is a community project run by Morland Community Hub and Burnham on Sea Baptist Church.

It is a membership scheme for residents who can sign up and pay £3.50 a week. For this, members are given a tote and chiller bag on joining and then each week receive a mix of fresh, chilled and ambient (tinned/ dry) foods. As we are run by volunteers and buy and collect mostly surplus food, we can offer this great price, and together with our members, we are stopping good food go to waste, and helping the environment. Hallowe’en Howlers…or Not? Graeme Robertson, OvenGleamers A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not, i.e., Howlers?!

1.

The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!

2.

One of the first things we learned in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler? Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.

3.

Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No, it’s not.

4.

Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. Cro-Magnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.
