Welcome to the May edition of LocalReach, things are starting to spring into life, with plenty of events happening this month. Oh to be young again, as the local Sea Cadets and RAF Cadets look for new members, so if you are reading this and think it is something you or a family member would enjoy, find more details in this month’s edition. With the Platinum Jubilee rapidly approaching there will be a long bank holiday weekend at the start of June, local groups are already starting to organise street parties and music events. If your group is busy coordinating something we are hoping to put together a ‘Right Royal Spread’ in next months edition of LocalReach. We were able to report that the Hubs are gaining strength each month. Citizens Advice and the Village Agent are kept busy when they attend each month.

Citizens Advice is in Berrow on the second Tuesday and Brean on the last Tuesday of the month. The Village Agent is with us every third week of the month in both Hubs. Melissa from Sedgemoor DC is with us at the end of each month. She is a Digital Champion and will help anyone who lacks confidence in using a computer. We are now completing some research into the provision of transport in both villages. Are you checking your search results before clicking?

Search engines are an invaluable tool that most of us make use of each and every day. But while invaluable, the risks involved are serious, particularly when the user is unaware of what to look for.

For the most part, search results are legitimate and get us where we want to be. However, sometimes fake results can direct us to malicious websites that can trick an unsuspecting user into being scammed or getting their computer infected with viruses. The algorithms that determine search results do their best to keep dangerous results at bay, but scammers can sometimes get past these protective measures. This means that on occasion, malicious search results will be lurking amongst legitimate results, sometimes as the top result, or not far off.

For this reason, caution should be taken when inspecting search results. No matter how high up a result is, it could lead you to a website that disguises itself as the one you intended to reach.

Some examples of what to look for are deals that are “far too good to be true”, results which threaten or question the health of your computer, results which provide a phone number to call, results with spelling or grammar mistakes, results promising any kind of giveaway, and results where the website address appears fake, or disguised to look similar to the real website address. Sometimes fake companies masquerade as a genuine company, which is one of the most worrying situations, as this can be hard to spot.

The wildlife orphan season is upon us!

Most of us have spent the last few weeks enjoying everything that Spring brings with it: trees turning green, flowers bursting into life, warmer temperatures, and longer days. At Secret World Wildlife Rescue, Spring is all about the orphaned animals and the first fox and badger cubs mean the season is truly in full swing.

Our first fox cub arrived on the Spring equinox this year. It’s a terrible shame when any animal must come into our care, but after a few quiet months we almost look forward to seeing the first cubs. They have had a difficult start to life but every animal we take in means one less animal suffering alone in the wild.

Now is the time that fox and badger cubs start to venture above ground and carefully explore the world. Please be careful when walking your dogs and keep them on leads in wooded areas where there’s a chance you’ll encounter wildlife.

If you do see any wild animals you think may need help, please call us on 01278 783250 before intervening. We’re happy to give advice and assess the situation, as it’s possible the parents are close by watching the cubs. We are open 8:00am till 8:00pm every day and will do whatever we can to make sure that no animal suffers needlessly. With your help we can give sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife a second chance at life.

The Top Five Things Your Never Wanted To Know About BBQing Number One: Is it BBQ or Barbecue? Barbecue derives from the word barabicu found in the language of the Taíno people of the Caribbean and the Timucua of Florida, and entered European languages in the form barbacoa. The word translates as “sacred fire pit.” The word describes a grill for cooking meat, consisting of a wooden platform resting on sticks.

Traditional barbacoa involves digging a hole in the ground and placing some meat (usually a whole goat) with a pot underneath it, so that the juices can make a hearty broth. It is then covered with maguey leaves and coal and set alight. The cooking process takes a few hours.

Number Two: The first commercially produced barbecue sauce was made by the Georgia Barbecue Sauce Company in Atlanta, Georgia. Its sauce was advertised for sale in the Atlanta Constitution, January 31, 1909. Heinz released its barbecue sauce in 1940. It now comes in three varieties: Classic, Sweet and Sweet & Spicy.

Number Three: Each year Environmental Health officers see a characteristic rise in the number of food poisoning cases through the summer period. When investigated, there is often one common factor - the barbecue!

Number Four: SAFETY TIP: In recent years there have been a number of fatalities and injuries as a result of people bringing BBQs into enclosed spaces and being overcome by carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous substance which is created when fossil fuels such as gas and solid fuels like charcoal and wood fail to combust fully due to a lack of oxygen. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it but it can kill quickly with no warning.
