Second Monday - Parkinson’s Support Group

Second and Fourth Monday of each Month – Go Socialize

We meet at the Catholic Church hall, TA8 1LL on the second Monday in the month from 2:00pm-4:00pm.

Keep informed about the latest scams. Don’t become a victim!

We have seen a huge rise in scams recently – having to deal with the consequences of people having their computers accessed remotely by fraudsters. Impersonating organisations are the most common scams because the victim can be tricked into offering up personal details such as passwords or granting access to their computers. Banks, internet providers and Microsoft are among the most common impersonated organisations. Alarm bells should ring if anybody on the phone requests remote access to your computer. Scammers may know your customer details, which help them seem convincing. Try to make the outbound calls to organisations using their correct contact number, instead of trusting the person who called you, if you wish to verify the substance of the call. Using a mobile phone to do this may be safer, as often the scammers keep the line open after you hang up!

We suggest reading up on new scams in order to keep immunised. Which? Scam Alerts is a free service we recommend signing up to. Those who sign up will receive regular email alerts as new scams are uncovered, including examples and steps to take in the event money is stolen. Fake Ukraine fundraiser scams and council tax refund scams are being reported in great numbers, along with others. To keep one step ahead of the scammers, head over to www.which.co.uk/scam-alerts to read more and sign up.

Be sure to upgrade to Windows 11 or the latest MacOS in order to keep protected from infections and scams. To check if you can get the upgrade from a Windows 10 device, open your start menu, click settings, select “Update & Security”, then “check for updates”. This will then show whether or not the Windows 11 update is available. If this is unavailable for your computer, we advise contacting us to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Decent antivirus and web protection is important too, which we can help with.

Community spirit at Priory Court Care Home Residents at Priory Court Care Home in Burnham-on-Sea have appreciated getting out and about this Spring. They hosted a fantastic garden party for families, friends and staff to enjoy, together with plenty of food and refreshments in the sunshine. Maintaining ties with their local community is particularly important for residents. Staff ensure people participate in activities that are meaningful to them in their local area. Residents enjoyed an Easter service hosted by Rev. Margaret from St Andrews Church in Burnham-on-Sea and have visited Apex Wildlife & Leisure Park.

Priory Court Care Home provides residential and dementia care for up to twenty-nine people in a comfortable and homely setting. The dedicated care team get to know each resident to provide personcentred care and support.

Commenting on Priory Court one relative said; “An absolutely wonderful place. The staff are so friendly, thoughtful and kind. They go above and beyond in their care. It’s so very difficult when the decision has to be made for a loved one to go into long-term care, but I have no concerns whatsoever about my husband’s welfare. I also know first-hand how challenging looking after my husband is at times, due to his condition. I cannot praise them highly enough and would certainly recommend Priory Court to anyone that is looking for a placement for a loved one.”

The homes’ philosophy of providing person-centred care means that residents choose what they would like to do each day according to their interests and hobbies. There is always plenty going on, from darts, jigsaws, games and sing-alongs to gardening and crafts. Baby bird season is in full swing The Bird Nesting Season runs from February to August, so this is a very busy time at Secret World Wildlife Rescue. Baby birds are brought into us for a few reasons: either their nest has been disturbed, very young chicks have fallen out of the nest, or they have been caught by cats.

At this time of year, it is common to see young birds on the ground as they are fledging – leaving the nest – for the first time. They are not always in trouble, so if you find a bird with feathers, please keep an eye on it and look for any dangers or signs of injury. It’s best not to intervene unless a bird is clearly in trouble, and you can always get in touch with us to discuss the situation.

If you find a bird with no or few feathers, it has likely fallen from the nest. Please try to return it if you can do so safely, if not you can place it in a small container with air holes and give us a call. It will need to come in to receive care and be mixed with other birds, so please do not feed it or attempt to rear it yourself. Unfortunately, we do receive calls where people have looked after a bird for a few days and these rarely have a good outcome.

If you do see any birds you think may need help, please call us on 01278 783250 before intervening.

We’re happy to give advice and assess the situation, and make sure they receive urgent care. We are open 8am till 8pm every day and will do whatever we can to make sure that no animal suffers needlessly. With your help we can give sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife a second chance at life.

Jubilee celebrations underway at local care home The Towans Residential Care Home for the Elderly in Burnham-onSea has grand plans to celebrate the Queens Jubilee, after a hard two years the residents, staff and families are all looking forward to the celebrations.

On Friday 3rd of June, it’s all hands on deck for the fun celebrations, the staff will be dressing up as the Queen’s Guard’s complete with Busbys. There will be a garden party with plenty of pimms and live entertainment.

The celebrations will continue on Saturday 4th June when we have invited along the local Cadets and the Royal British Legion, as well as all our residents and their families. Many of the residents have a military background which makes the involvement of local military groups and charities even more important to us. A Jubilee Rose Garden, with many varieties of Royal related roses, will be formally opened on the day as well as the planting of a tree by the residents and the cadets for The Queens Canopy. After the formalities there will cream teas for all and time to relax and enjoy the day together.

Jubilee Celebrations - A Look Back No doubt you have already planned your celebrations to mark the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. No other “Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee British monarch has Service” by Andrew Carrick Gow. reigned this long Guildhall Art Gallery and even golden jubilees are rare. Henry III, Edward III and James VI and I all reigned for 50 years but there are few records about how these were marked although we do know that to celebrate Edward III’s golden jubilee in 1376 there was a spectacular week-long joust at London’s Smithfield which had begun with a magnificent procession from the Tower of London accompanied by trumpeters.

The only other monarchs who have reigned for 50 years are George III and Victoria. Celebrations for George III’s golden jubilee in 1809 were on a grand scale with processions, feasts and a 50gun salute fired from the Tower of London. The jubilee was probably the first to be celebrated by the whole nation and there are reports of festivities in many places with local gentry and landowners providing food so that the poor and even those in prison could be included in the celebrations.

By the time of Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, the celebrations were even more impressive as were those for her diamond jubilee on 22 June 1897.

The coach drive around London from Buckingham Palace to a service at St Paul’s Cathedral was watched by hundreds of thousands of spectators.

The 78-year-old queen recorded: “No-one ever, I believe, has met with such an ovation as was given to me, passing through those six miles of streets... The crowds were quite indescribable and their enthusiasm truly marvellous and deeply touching. The cheering was quite deafening and every face seemed to be filled with joy.”

There were many street parties around the country and, in London, 400,000 of the poorest residents were treated to a feast sponsored by the tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton which included free bottles of ale and pipe tobacco. Parties and firework displays went on well into the evening and a chain of beacons was lit across Britain. By order of the government, and much to the disgust of the Temperance Movement, pubs remained open until 02:30.

We already have a good list of volunteers who help on the Helpline, vaccinations and events throughout the towns, but as the jubilee is over 4 consecutive Bank Holidays this year, we will need more. We never ask for more than 3-hour shifts, but we do ask you to come with the most vital of skills, a smile on your face! We also try to help in other events throughout the year but there is no expectation to help at all events. Some people help at lots, some help at one or two a year”.

Jubilee Fever: 70 Years Of Oven Cleaning!

As Jubilee fever descends upon us all, I thought it would be interesting to look back at the professional oven cleaning over the past 70 years.

Back in the ’50s and 60s cookers and ovens were made to last and were often large bulky Ranges with multiple ovens and hobs. Traditional housewives would clean their ovens using a mixture of borax and baking soda. Soon there was a revolution in oven cleaning products: Easy Off Aerosol spray featured in TV commercials and Astonish (our favourite oven cleaning paste) was born in Leeds in the late 60s.

By the 1970s manufacturers were enticing us all with self-cleaning ovens! This description is a bit of a misnomer. Many self-cleaning ovens only have self-cleaning panels on the sides of the ovens – the areas that don’t get very dirty! All the other panels and racks still need cleaning. But for cooker manufacturers, it was a fantastic marketing tool and it boosted the sale of new cookers at the time.

Moving forward into the ‘80s, the market was expanding with many ‘off the shelf’ oven cleaning products becoming available including the Brillo Pad. The Brillo Pad was patented in 1913 as a scourer for cooking pans but marketing gave it a new job!

By the early 1990s professional oven cleaning had started. An expert oven cleaner would come to your home in his van and clean your oven. The original oven cleaning companies used metal tanks, filled with water and cleaning fluid and heated a camping gas stove! More modern systems include electrically heated tanks and eco-friendly cleaning products.

In the 2000s technology moved on with the invention of pyrolytic ovens and steam ovens. Pyrolytic ovens are ‘self-cleaning’ - you remove all inner racks and then run a self-cleaning programme. The oven door locks, the oven heats up to a very high temperature and burns off all the grease leaving a powder that you then just brush out. Then you just have to clean all the inner racks!

Quack, Quack, Quack – Win, Win, Win - A first in England A climate-friendly, solar-powered duck food dispenser is set to be a ducks’ delight in Apex Park in Highbridge and is being installed today.

Sedgemoor District Council are working with The Feed Ducks Initiative to provide a solar powered duck food dispenser which is made from recycled plastics - the equivalent of 20,000 plastic bottles.

The duck feed dispensers are contactless and for a small fee dispenses healthy duck food for the visitors to Apex Park to use when feeding their local ducks.

A portion of the proceeds are donated back to the Friends of Apex Park to help develop biodiversity and environmental programs at their local Park; the other proceeds are for the duck food itself.

However, ducks need a varied diet to be healthy and bread doesn’t hold much nutritional value for ducks.

It fills the duck’s stomach so that they don’t forage for food that they would normally eat, which can lead to malnutrition. Uneaten soggy bread can cause a buildup of bad nutrients, which can lead to more algae growing around the water. This, in turn, can attracts pest such as rats and can be harmful to dogs that drink from the lake.
