Gardening Jobs for January

• Forced bulbs in pots can be brought inside but try and give them cool conditions for a week or two.

• Seed potatoes will be available to purchase this month. Stand them upright in trays or egg boxes with the “rose” end uppermost in a light, frost free place. There are so many varieties to choose, and I will be growing Casablanca (first early), Charlotte (salad), Kestrel (second early) and Sarpo Mira(maincrop).

• The light levels will noticeably improve towards the end of the month.

• Make sure you’re planning for the seasons ahead has been done. This should include the purchasing of new seeds and composts for sowing and planting ahead.

• Only work outdoors when the ground is not too wet or frozen, although sometimes when frosty soil has just thawed, on a sunny day, the ground can be really workable. New shrubs and trees can be planted if conditions are right but if not, these plants can be heeled into a shallow trench and can stay there until conditions improve. Any new plants in containers can be left in a sheltered spot as well.

• Only sow seeds indoors if you can provide adequate heat for the resulting seedlings to grow on. If you have no heat wait until later before sowing seeds inside.

• You can force rhubarb now by mulching with well- rotted manure or compost and covering the plant with a large lightproof container. The bright, pink sticks of rhubarb should be ready in about six weeks.

• Consider warming up some soil outside for some early sowing and planting next month. Use plastic sheeting, fleece, and cloches for this task.

Every Monday – The Arc The Arc has started back up again at the Methodist church hall in College Street from 2:00pm until 4:00pm.

A big weekend of celebrations for all to enjoy.

Another fantastic night you won’t want to miss will be Only Fools and Three Courses - a must for anyone who loves ‘Del Boy’. This will be another ticket only event, so keep your eyes peeled for when they go on sale.

Here at the Windmill we serve coffee, fruit and decaf tea, cake, Wednesday and Sunday Carvery, lunch and evening meals. It’s the perfect place for meeting up, being just a stone’s throw from the M5 junction 22, with a large car park available. The Wreck on Berrow Beach Many people will have seen the blackened ribs which are all that remains of the Norwegian barque, the Nornen. What may not be common knowledge is that 3rd March 2022 is the 125th anniversary of her being beached at Berrow. It is well known that all her crew were saved, including the ship’s dog, which we have recently been informed was a Great Dane and stayed with his master locally for a few days. The Lifeboat who went to her aid was the John Godfrey Morris, launched from Burnham under the coxswain Mr. A Hunt. As next year is such an important anniversary, I am putting out a request to people whose relatives may have passed down information or left a story to share with us about the vessel and the help given by residents at the time.
