Welcome to the December edition of Local Reach – there are concerts, carols and Christmas Fetes being organised to help you get into the Christmas spirt along with many of the regular groups and societies managing to start back with Covid safety measures in place. With the night’s drawing in maybe taking up a new hobby will see you through the winter, whether it is the U3A or joining one of our local bands – maybe even consider entering next year’s Highbridge Festival of the Arts – but don’t leave it too long as the closing date is December 31st.

Whilst many people celebrate at this time of the year, take a moment to think of those who may be struggling this Christmas, the Foodbank have a small piece in this month’s edition for those able to donate or for those in need of support.

Gardening Jobs for December

• Tidy up sheds and greenhouses and wash out any dirty pots and containers. There are a few different ways of cleaning out and disinfecting greenhouses and tunnels. You can use a tin of special greenhouse sulphur, or spray surfaces with Citrox, or diluted Jeyes fluid or household bleach.

• Fruit trees like apples and pears can be pruned but be careful and think through carefully what you are trying to achieve. Always remove dead and damaged growth plus any branches which are crossing. Clear out the centre of the tree if it is crowded to allow air to circulate and check tree stakes and ties. DO NOT prune stone fruits like plums and cherries at this time of year, wait until warmer months to do this job.

• Keep checking any stored produce regularly.

• Under cover and in individual pots, modules or rootrainers sow broad beans, garlic, shallots, and onion sets.

• The weather in December often does not allow suitable conditions for outside work but do take advantage of any decent spells. Ground preparation is still a priority so if any beds need a dig overdo it as soon as possible.

• Continue gathering up any fallen leaves left from Autumn.

• Continue planting new shrubs and trees when the weather permits. Any newly purchased potted plants can be left in their pots and any bare root plants heeled in until conditions improve.

• Keep planning ahead for next year by ordering new seeds, potatoes, seeds and composts if you need to do so.

Mince pies Traditionally eaten at Christmas but what’s their origin?

Until the middle to end of the 19th century the recipes always included meat. In medieval and Tudor times this was typically lamb or veal, then tongue and tripe in the 18th century and minced beef in the 19th century. The meat was always spiced and this may have been influenced by the introduction into England of a wide ranges of spices around the time of the Crusades.

The earliest recipe for a pie full of spices and meat is said to have appeared in 1390 in a 14th century manuscript collection of recipes apparently recorded by the cooks to Richard II. One of the manuscripts was published in 1780, for the curator of the British Museum, by Samuel Pegge and entitled The Forme of Cury. It is among the oldest extant English cookery books, and the earliest known to mention olive oil, and spices such as mace and cloves. In it, the “tartes of fleshe” were made of pork, hard-boiled eggs and cheese which were mixed with saffron, spices and sugar.

A similar recipe can be found in Gervase Markham’s The English Huswife, published in 1615 in which a leg of mutton was mixed with three pounds of suet, salt, cloves, mace, currants, raisins, prunes, dates, and orange peel.

As you can see from the recipes, the pies were not the small dainty ones we see today; these were large pies intended to be eaten by several people.

This and the addition of expensive spices in the recipes suggests that they were typically eaten by the better off and on special occasions. By the mid-17th Century, there appears to have been some connections made to Christmas and Samuel Pepys makes several references to eating them at that time in his diary.

Although the myth is not true that Oliver Cromwell banned the eating of mince pies, it is fortunate for Pepys that the monarchy had been restored in 1660. The Puritans believed that over-indulgence in food at Christmas and other feast days was associated with wantonness and debauchery.

They disapproved of any form of feasting and introduced various laws in the 1640’s banning celebrations at Christmas, Easter and Whitsun.

I hope, however, that other myths associated with mince pies are true. Do make a wish when you eat the first one and eat one, preferably in different houses, for every happy month.

Every Monday and Wednesday - Balliol Short Mat Bowling Club We have been bowling in a COVID secure way since the easing of lockdown restrictions in May, initially with existing club members. A couple of additional experienced bowls players have also attended since the end of lockdown in July. Update on Windows 11

Every Tuesday - Lighthouse Room Art Group (Berrow)

Since last month’s article, Windows 11 is now fully released. We have installed it as both upgrades for existing customers and on new computers, and I am happy to report that it has been a great success.

The group meet every Tuesday 10:00am – 12:00 noon at the Berrow Village Hall, we look forward to welcoming all our members back and new recruits (following the current guidelines).

Customers are finding it straight forward to use and are not finding any major issues. We provide our own Windows 11 guide for each customer, and this has helped bridge the gap between Windows 10 and 11 features.

One issue that we are seeing is that some older computers will not accept Windows 11 without modification, and in some cases, especially for older computers, a complete new system is the best way forward.

We will be providing refreshments for a donation. We are a pilot for Sedgemoor DC who are starting a new programme of computer support in the community. We will be training ‘Digital Eagles’ who will be available to support people to gain more confidence using computers. We will also have a computer available for those who do not have access to computers.

This will enable them to gain access to services.

Christmas Cheer from The Towans family to yours There is never a more important time of year than Christmas to be around loved ones and to enjoy the festivities together. Christmas at The Towans Residential Care Home is always a busy time, bustling with activities, entertainment and the whole team getting involved.

Every room is decorated from early December by Jo our activities coordinator and the accounts ladies. The focal point of the decorations is our huge, real Christmas tree which is collected each year by one of the directors, Tom. John, our maintenance man, is then tasked with getting the lights on the tree, this is harder than it sounds with a crowd of females directing from below. The days are full of festive fun, staff all dress for the occasion, there are angels and elves everywhere you look. Carols can be heard being sung as residents and staff congregate in different rooms, all the traditional family games take place. Last year our usual Santa, one of the staff member’s kind hubbys, couldn’t come in as normal due to Government restrictions. To ensure the residents did not miss out on their visit from Santa on Christmas day Tom jumped in and donned a Santa outfit along with his dog, Cyra. Cyra came as a reindeer with her red antlers! Christmas lunch is a key part of the day, as it is in all homes, our kitchen team ensure local produce is used to produce incredible food served on the long Christmas dinning table with music and laughter ringing through the whole home. Our brilliant management team also choose to come in on the big day to spend time with the residents as well. On top of making sure the days are perfect for the residents the staff always make sure there are photos and videos documenting all our seasonal events too, this is for family and friends to share the celebrations with us if they can’t join us for them. We as a business are so lucky and proud to have truly amazing staff that work hard to make the day special and fun even while some of them are juggling their own Christmas plans with their work rota.

We would like to say a massive thank you to our very special team for all their hard work, all year as well as at Christmas.

The Morland Community Hub The Morland Community Hub, a registered charity, is based in Pearce Drive, Highbridge, TA9 3FU. A friendly place, where people come together to socialise, be creative, learn new skills and support each other, as well as our extended community. Activities include a weekly luncheon club, Brownies, art for well-being, knit and natter, karate and bingo. Exciting new groups starting very soon.

The Hub is the proud recipient of the Somerset Medal, awarded for its continuous, tireless work supporting those in need in the community during the covid pandemic.

We will be training ‘Digital Eagles’ who will be available to support people to gain more confidence using computers.

We will also have a computer available for those who do not have access to computers. This will enable them to gain access to services.

Every last Friday – The B.D. Jazzclub The BD Jazz Club was formed in 1996 to preserve, support and promote New Orleans/ Traditional Jazz in Burnham on Sea and surrounding areas.

We now meet at Cossington Village Hall, Trivetts Way, TA7 8JN every last Friday in the month except December when we meet just before Christmas. We are a non-profit making club with any profit going to charity. We are currently supporting the R.N.I.B. Guide Dog Training Programme and past charities include Afghan Heroes, Musgrove Leukaemia Centre, Musgrove Premature Baby Unit, Help the Child and the Somerset Unit for Radio Therapy Equipment. The monthly session features a variety of bands from all over the UK and occasionally visiting bands from abroad. We are a friendly bunch and everyone is welcome.

Last-minute Christmas Gift Cake Ingredients:

Traditionally Christmas cakes are made well in advance but if you haven’t had time try our lastminute version. Because it makes two you can also give one away as a gift, and solve two problems with one recipe!

Makes 2 cakes, each serving 8 Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 1-1¾ hours depending on oven.

600g good-quality mixed dried fruits 150ml whisky, warmed 150g stem ginger, drained, plus 8 tbsp ginger syrup from the jar 200g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 300g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp mixed spice 200g soft light brown sugar 4 large free-range eggs 2 tbsp milk Finely grated zest of 2 small oranges and 2 lemons 50g ground almonds 150g whole glacé cherries Method: Put the dried fruits in a bowl and pour over the whisky. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the fruit to plump up.

Briefly blend the ginger and its syrup in a mini food processor until finely chopped. Preheat the oven to 160°C/fan140°C/gas 3. Grease and line a 20cm square cake tin.

Sift the flour, baking powder and mixed spice into a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients except the cherries. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 2 minutes until pale and fluffy. Fold in the soaked dried fruits and any whisky, the blitzed ginger and the cherries.

Spoon into the baking tin and level off. Bake for 1-1¾ hours (this depends very much on your oven. My fan oven is super-quick whereas my mother’s aga is slower). If you’re unsure I recommend you check after an hour then every fifteen minutes after that, until the cake is firm and golden brown. To check, insert a skewer into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is cooked. You can cover it loosely with foil after 1 hour if the centre needs more time. This prevents the surface darkening too much. Leave in the tin for 10 minutes, and then remove to a wire rack to cool.

Remove a thin slice from all sides of the cake and discard. Cut the cake in half to make 2 rectangles.

Top with marzipan and white fondant icing and decorate with a sprig of holly.

The North Sedgemoor Local History Group Thank you to all the people who gave possible locations for the picture of the unknown building in October’s Local Reach. Suggestions included the original Seaton House at Oxford Street end of Cross Street and the old Institute Building in Regent Street. Unfortunately, none were correct. I have since learnt that the original photo had a backing, and the writing was on this and not the photo.

So, it maybe not in Burnham after all! For those of you wondering when our monthly meetings will resume, the Committee has agreed to restart our programme in March 2022. This is partly due to the uncertainties of the Covid situation, and partly because of problems complying with the new booking requirements at the King Alfred School.

Hopefully, we won’t have to find another venue!

The way forward for Berrow Beach Following representations from Berrow residents and the positive and constructive proposals from Discover Brean – a group of Berrow and Brean businesses – Sedgemoor District Council has come up with a way forward to allow vehicular access to Berrow Beach during the autumn and winter.

From 1st November, the beach will be open for vehicle access on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays between 10:00 hrs and 15:00 hrs, taking into account tidal conditions. The beach safety warden will be on hand for any safety issues and advice. There will be no charge to park.

On the days when there are no safety beach staff on duty (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) the access gates will be closed. There is parking in the nearby Berrow Dunes Nature reserve car park, with pedestrian access. There are disabled access points at nearby Burnham-on-Sea beach for those who are unable to use the pedestrian access to Berrow Beach.

We are very grateful for the offer from Discover Brean and look forward to working alongside them to help support the beach team. We understand that residents and local users of the beach may be aware of the dangers that the beach can pose, but if the gates are open and unsupervised, that does allow for access for people who may not be aware of the potential dangers of the tides and beach.

That is why SDC will be using the regular beach safety staff to supervise the opening hours.

Apex Park and Marine Cove Gardens recognised as Excellent Now more than ever people are seeing the benefit of parks and green spaces which is why Sedgemoor District Council is delighted to have been awarded Green Flag Awards for Marine Cove Gardens and Apex Park in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge.

The Green Flag Award is run by Keep Britain Tidy and has been going since 1997; recognising and rewarding well-managed, high quality green spaces that have excellent visitor facilities and is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

Once an area of clay digging and covering some 42 acres, Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park includes a large children’s play area, woodland walk, lake, outdoor gym and skate park. Marine Cove, originally part of the Old Vicarage estate, was first opened as formal public Gardens in 1927.

A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council said: “We have been awarded Green Flag Award status for these much-loved parks for a number of years now but it is especially appreciated during the pandemic which has be a challenging one for so many people using and tending these parks.

“The award honours the staff and volunteers who work so hard to keep our parks looking good. We are extremely proud and grateful to those who have helped us retain the award. After 18 months that have seen our parks and green spaces play a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely, the news that both Apex Park and Marine Cove Gardens have achieved the Green Flag Award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that make the green space a great space that everyone can enjoy”.
