This month - fertiliser
All those chemical symbols on the side of the packet are rather reminiscent of school chemistry lessons. In fact, the basics are quite simple. NPK - This can be observed on the side of most fertiliser packages. The letters stand for: N - Nitrogen P - Phosphorous K - Potassium Together these are known as the macro-nutrients and each of them has its own use. Nitrogen primarily feeds the leafy above-theground parts of the plants. Phosphorous promotes strong roots.
This month the days get longer, and the sun gets stronger...we hope! However, March is famously temperamental and if the soil where you are is still wet and cold then it’s wise to delay planting and sowing until the temperature rises. Plant nutrient reserves are low at this time of year so, as the soil warms up, it’s time to think about fertiliser. Many gardeners are a bit frightened of fertiliser.
Potassium makes grass hardier, promotes germination and improves vegetable and fruit yields. The proportions of each macro-nutrient will be printed on the packet. Equal amounts of each nutrient make for a good general-purpose fertiliser. A lawn will need a good balance of nitrogen and phosphorus to guarantee lush green grass with a healthy root system capable of withstanding dry spells. Fruiting plants need higher proportions of potassium. There are other macro-nutrients: Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, which plants obtain freely from the air and water; and calcium, magnesium, and sulphur, which should be present in any good general-purpose fertiliser. Plants also need micro-nutrients: Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Boron, and Molybdenum. Plants take all these nutrients and build everything they need from scratch, including vitamins. What plants cannot do is absorb vitamins directly from things such as pet food, milk or so-called fertilisers which contain vitamins, proteins, and fats. So don’t be intimidated by fertiliser. Decide what your plants need then read the label. It’s easy as ABC..or rather NPK. Caution! Don’t over-do it! It’s best to feed little and often. Don’t fertilise in direct sun or the leaves may scorch. Wait until the soil has warmed. Keep out of reach of children!. By Rachael Leverton

OvenGleamers Recipe of The Month - Meringue Kisses With Mother’s Day coming up, we’ve got a delicious recipe for you this month that are perfect to treat the ones you love. Ingredients (serves four) 3 large egg whites About 200g caster sugar Pink food colouring 50g white chocolate, chopped For the filling: 300ml double cream 1tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for sprinkling About 4tbsp cherry jam To serve: 8 fresh ripe cherries Method 1: Preheat the oven to 110C. Drawing freehand or using a 6.5cm heart-shaped cutter as a template, draw eight hearts on to two sheets of baking parchment. Turn them over and lay on to two baking sheets. Don’t grease the paper as meringue will be used to secure the corners. Weigh a spotlessly clean bowl, then weigh the egg whites in it. Calculate their weight, double it and weigh that quantity of caster sugar into a separate bowl. 2: Whisk the egg whites until they stand in soft peaks and the fluffy mixture doesn’t slip around in the bowl. You should be able to turn it upside down over your head without the mixture falling out.

Whisk in the sugar, a tablespoon at a time, making sure each spoonful dissolves before adding the next. Dip a cocktail stick into the food colouring and add it to the meringue until you reach the depth of colour you want. Dot a little of the meringue under the corners of each piece of parchment to secure it to the baking sheet. 3: Spoon the rest of the meringue into a piping bag with a 1cm round nozzle and pipe inside the heart templates. Bake for about 1.5 hours, until they come away easily from the paper. Leave to cool in the oven. 4: Set a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Melt the white chocolate in the bowl, then spoon it over the base of each meringue and leave to set. Whip the cream and icing sugar in a bowl until thick and glossy. Swirl in the cherry jam. Take two meringue hearts and sandwich them together with the sweet jam cream. Serve dusted with a little extra icing sugar and a couple of ripe cherries. Meringue is renowned for being difficult to make, and we would love to see a great selection of success and fail photos! Where can beginners play alongside champions in their own town? Clevedon Bowling Club, at the top of Chapel Hill, currently has two England Champion lady bowlers. I joined CBC less than 2 years ago, and have played alongside ex-internationals and champions, in the best value sport I know. If you have never tried this intriguing game, but merely watched it on the tv, or as you walk by our green, you don’t know what you are missing. The social side of CBC, and the friendliness of the new group of friends I have met is wonderful. Try us soon, please!

Clevedon Care is a registered charity run by volunteers since 1988. We help people in the BS21 postcode area access medical appointments within Clevedon and further afield. We are getting busier (approximately 3000 journeys were requested in 2023) and we now need more help.

Plans for the 2024 show on Sat 24th/Sun 25th August are underway. We donated £200 from proceeds of raffles to Clevedon Foodbank and Marlens/Clevedon Marine Lake is this year’s charity. We’re working on 2024 Schedules, available February. We have agreed to hold 2024 entry prices at last year’s levels. 2023 was challenging with inflationary price increases for all aspects of the show and losing our long-standing storage space site. Thankfully, Clevedon School came to our rescue. Many are surprised to hear our show costs over £25,000 to put on. We had to use over £7,000 of our 2023 show fund to purchase new storage containers which will make things difficult this year.
