Welcome to the September edition of LocalReach and am pleased to have received plenty of information from our local groups and societies who are starting to open their doors once more to the community.

There currently seems to be a need for volunteers to come forward and help support established or new groups, so if you are looking for some new opportunities you may find something in this month’s edition.

With Michaelmas day celebrated this month, the local Archaeological and History Society have provided some interesting information as have the horticultural society with some top tips for budding gardeners.

Michaelmas Day, Geese, Daisies and beware the Devil’s Blackberries Michaelmas, celebrated on 29th September is one of the four “quarter days”, the others being Lady Day on 25th March, Midsummer on 24th June and Christmas.

They were the four dates on which servants were hired, rents due or leases begun. Michaelmas, coming after harvest, was very important marking the beginning of the new farming year and was, therefore, the time when many new servants were hired, land exchanged and debts were paid. It also marks the beginning of the academic year.

The tradition of eating a goose, fed on the stubble from the fields, after the harvest, is said to protect against financial need in the family for the next year; and as the saying goes: “Eat a goose on Michaelmas Day, Want not for money all the year”.

Although it has been suggested that the reason for eating goose was that Queen Elizabeth I was eating one when she received news of the defeat of the

St Michael is celebrated as a protector from darkness and evil and also gives his name to the Michaelmas Daisy which typically comes into flower around this time and is said to symbolise protection against the cold dark months ahead.

A much quoted verse for which I can find no attribution says “The Michaelmas Daisies, among dede weeds, Bloom for St Michael’s valorous deeds.

And seems the last of flowers that stood, Till the feast of St. Simon and St. Jude.”

(The Feast of St. Simon and Jude is 28th October) Michaelmas is also celebrated to honour the Angels who fought alongside Saint Michael to banish Satan from Heaven. In the battle Lucifer was said to have been thrown from heaven and landed in a blackberry bush. Much aggrieved he cursed the bush and is said to spit on the blackberries every year so that they turn bad.

I do hope you picked your blackberries early!!

Gardening Jobs for September • As mentioned in the previous month’s article nowadays in September often mild weather tends to prolong the growing season more so than in the past and garden plants keep growing and could well still need watering and feeding.

• Make a start planting spring-flowering bulbs in the garden or containers. Any forced bulbs needed for really early flowering, including Christmas time, need to go in containers and need to be kept cool and dark for at least eight weeks.

• Onion sets, shallots and garlic will be available to plant this month, but I personally would wait until the end of the month before planting. You can also start them off in small pots and modules before planting out later, • Give a final trim to hedging and remember to keep your hedges wider and thicker at the base rather than the top.

• Growth on lawns will slow down this month so raise the cutting blades on the mower. Later in the month is often a good time to lay new turf or sow grass seed for new lawns.

• Prepare sites for any new planting of shrubs and trees later in the autumn and try to always improve the soil by adding organic matter. If you have not already done so now is the time to order bare root

plants from suppliers. Trees, shrubs, roses and hedging will all be available, and you will have the widest choice if you order now.

• In recent years sowing a green manure crop has become more popular. This can be down on any bare patches in the garden. The plants are allowed to grow until such time as you choose to dig them into your soil, usually in winter or early spring. The idea of doing this is to improve soil structure and fertility.

• Continue harvesting crops for long term storage, find out the best method for each type and check regularly on their condition throughout the coming months.

• If you have not done so already, pinch out the growing tips from tomatoes and remove old leaves. After the middle of the month the ripening process slows.

• Many late summer flowering plants will keep going until the first frosts. Keep dead-heading your plants and give them a liquid feed on a regular basis.

• If needed water greenhouses early in the day so they have time to dry out before evening and close the windows and doors in late afternoon to help trap the day’s heat. Reduce the amount of water given to house plants as light levels fall.

Strength to strength A Burnham-on-Sea residential care home for the elderly, The Towans, Berrow road, are going from strength to strength after 15 years of ownership.

Tom and Debra, a husband and wife team, took over The Towans in 2007 and have taken the business from strength to strength over the years. One of their top priorities along side providing exceptional care has been to enhance the home environment for their residents. This has included developing the communal areas including the garden lounge, TV lounge and replacing the small sun room with a substantial conservatory complete with air conditioning. The garden has had raised beds added for the residents to tend to flowers, fruit and vegetables. A large pergola has made the lawn a more usable space in the height of the summer, under it the tables and chairs make it a favourite spot for residents to enjoy a cream tea and summer entertainment. At the end of last summer a new heated visiting cabin was installed which adheres to covid safe visiting rules for friends and family to visit all year around.

Over the course of the last year with the global pandemic it has been a hard time for the care sector in general. Tom and Debra are incredibly proud of how the whole team have navigated this difficult time. The standard of care reminded outstanding throughout. The staff have been going above and beyond what is expected of them to keep residents safe and happy, including the team getting vaccinated as soon as it became available locally.

Thursday 2nd September - Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society - New Musical Director, New Era James Davies BMus (Hons), who studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama has been appointed as the new Musical Director. In 2020 James sang at the BBC Songs of Praise Remembrance service, but is also an accomplished Brass player, teacher and Orchestra manager of the Welsh Sinfonia. His appointment signals the start of a new and exciting era for the Choral Society bringing a wealth of experience conducting various orchestras and groups. This would be an ideal time to join this friendly and relaxed Choral Society in the Methodist Church Hall, College Street, Burnham-on-Sea at 7:30pm.

There are no auditions and although reading music is an advantage, it’s not necessary. The first 3 weeks are FREE. So why not come along?

Banana Upside Down Cake For lovers of caramel everywhere

Preparation time: 25 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes Ingredients: For Banana Topping: 120 g brown sugar 60 g butter 1.5 tbsp golden syrup 3 bananas sliced For the Cake 2 ripe bananas 2 tbsp yoghurt 90 g butter at room temperature 180 g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs 180 g self-raising flour ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp nutmeg Method: Preheat the oven to 180C. Line a 20 x 20cm square baking tin or a 23cm round tin with baking parchment. It’s best not to use a loose-bottomed tin but if you do fold the parchment so it goes up the sides of the tin too.

Otherwise, the caramel will leak out into the oven!

To make the topping, place the sugar, butter, and golden syrup into a small heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat until all the sugar and butter have melted. Stir gently and pour into the tin, tilting the tin backwards and forwards so the layer of caramel completely covers the bottom.

Slice the bananas into pieces about 2cm thick.

Place them in the caramel.

For the cake, mash the bananas with a fork then mix into the yogurt. Set aside.

Place the butter and sugar into a large mixing bowl. Whisk till pale and fluffy.

Add the vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time, whisking after each one.

Sift the flour and spices together and gradually fold into the mixing bowl. Then fold in the banana and yoghurt mixture.

Spoon the batter into the cake tin on top of the caramel and bananas.

Bake at 180C for about 45 minutes. Test with a skewer to see if it’s cooked. If necessary bake for a little longer.

When ready, remove the cake from the oven and let it stand for a couple of minutes. Then place a plate on top of the tin and turn it over to remove the cake.

Serve warm with cream, custard, or ice cream.

This serves to protect data against harmful events such as user error, virus infections, and hardware failure. For those looking for the most comprehensive backup solution and for mobile devices (i.e phones and tablets), we recommend offsite cloud backups, which is where backups are saved on the cloud (cloud essentially means a computer that resides elsewhere and is accessed automatically via the internet), therefore protecting data against even more circumstances including natural disasters and theft.

WIN £100 in TASS art competition The Arts Society Sedgemoor’s Young Arts committee’s - ART FROM ODDS AND ENDS – has met a warm reception from schools in the Sedgemoor area, with many adding the competition details to their own school websites.

Aimed at young people from 11 – 21 who live, study or work in the Sedgemoor area, entrants are asked to create a painting, collage or sculpture made from repurposed materials; there’s a prize of £100 for each of the three age categories.

Budding artists have the summer to design, source and create their masterpieces, which will be on display at Bridgwater Arts Centre before the prizegiving ceremony later in the year.

Organiser Jo Boyd said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for young people in our area to show their artistic skills by creating an original and striking piece of art. We have already heard of some wonderful ideas, such as making flowers out of old sun-spec lenses!”

Were you a Cub Scout with the 1st Huntspill & Highbridge Scout group in the 1990’s?

Twelve cubs attended a recording studio in Weston together with their parents to raise some funds for a roof repair under the supervision of Fiona and Terry Pascoe. The song was called “We Will Always Be Prepared” – were you one of those cub scouts, parent or volunteers? The song and the story of that day is being featured in this month’s Scout & Scouting Magazine.

Having entered some songs in the UK Song writing Competition over the past few years, this year they added a Crisis Songs category, and the Scout Song was entered, and it made the semi-finals.

I perform with a UK touring production, The Beach Boyz Tribute Show, who will be returning to the Princess Theatre in Burnham-on-Sea on Saturday 23rd October.

It would be lovely to meet and talk with any of the ‘’boy scouts’’ that sang on the recording, should they wish to come along to the show.

If so, you might be eligible to apply for a grant from the town council. The deadline for applications is 10th September 2021. It has been a challenging year and we know that the work of many community groups will have been affected by COVID-19. The council is pleased to be able to provide grants to our community and wants to support local groups wherever it can. The money granted can be used to support the cost of a capital project, such as purchasing equipment or works to buildings, it can be put towards general running costs, or it can be used to deliver a community event.

1st Huntspill and Highbridge Beavers have issued a call for new leaders after a jump in the number of children joining its group.

1st Huntspill and Highbridge Scout group have grown despite the difficulties faced throughout the pandemic with all three sections, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, at almost full capacity. Beavers’ spokeswoman Claudette Murley says: “We are looking for 1 if not 2 adults to join us every week and become permanent Assistant Leaders. We are a very outdoors type of group and enjoy a range of activities like fire lighting, cooking, nature walks, and wide games. If anyone is free on a Wednesday evening between 6:15pm and 7:30pm and think they would like to join us, please get in contact. We are also looking for someone to take over as our Committee Secretary, this would be a commitment if 5/6 meetings a year which are only an hour or so, take the minutes, produce an agenda and undertake some training”.
