Welcome‌ Welcome to the September edition of LocalReach – having to adapt to the way we live has been both challenging and difficult for many people.

You soon realise how important various things are in your life for your physical and mental wellbeing. I for one was pleased to hear that the swimming pools could re-open, however appreciate how 4 months out of the pool can affect our physical strength, I would like to extend words of encouragement to anyone returning to the fitness regimes and to keep going!

This month is seeing a few groups re-opening but it is advisable to contact the session organisers first to make sure that changes have not taken place since going to print.

Unfortunately the popular Kite Festival that takes place on the beach is being postponed, but promises big and better for 2021 so there is plenty of time to practice your kite flying skills!

Gardening Jobs for September • You can make a start planting spring flowering bulbs in the positions where they are to bloom. They can also be planted in pots or containers. A good tip is to incorporate some grit in with the compost mix and to lay the bulbs onto a small layer of grit to improve drainage. Special bulbs that have been conditioned to flower for Christmas will need to be kept in a cool, dark place for at least eight weeks.

After the middle of September the ripening process slows so it might be better to pick fruits and leave them to ripen on a sunny windowsill or in a drawer with a ripe banana.

• Cut and dry seed heads for winter indoor decorations.

• On empty patches of your plot consider sowing a green manure crop which will grow away quickly and then be turned back into the soil in winter or spring this action will improve the soil structure.

• Give a final trim to hedging and remember to keep it wider and thicker at the base rather than the top.

• Plants in containers and baskets as well as the garden will hopefully keep flowering until the frosts, keep dead heading your plants.

• Prepare sites for any new planting of trees and shrubs later on during autumn, winter and spring.

Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost to improve your soil.

• Water greenhouses and tunnels early in the day so they have time to dry out before evening and close windows and doors in late afternoon to help trap the days heat

• Grass growth on lawns will slow down this month so raise the cutting blades on your mower. It’s also a good time to lay new turf or sow new grass seed particularly later on in the month.

• Towards the end of the month it is a good time to start to move shrubs and trees while the soil is still warm.

• Continue to harvest crops and store potatoes

• Reduce watering of houseplants as light levels fall.

Why Make a Will, Have a Power of Attorney or Consider Tax Planning It is important that make your Will, if you have family or dependents on whom you wish to specify benefit. Otherwise, your estate will be the subject of statutory intestacy provisions, and these may not match your own wishes.

If you wish to preserve your wealth, you can make use of trusts - will trusts that operate after your death, and lifetime trusts that you can set up now. In both scenarios, you can preserve wealth for your family for generations to come.

The trustees manage the wealth objectively and so preserve it. The beneficiaries will not be able to squander the capital. Additionally, if you have a disabled child, for example, a trust is a good way to manage their money, and so lifestyle, in the future when you are unavailable to be there to help them.

Where a person has already died, all may not be lost, as the beneficiaries of the will or intestacy can vary the terms of it within two years of death. Additionally, anyone may make a claim on a person’s estate, which may or may not be successful.

When to replace a computer Often we get asked how long a computer will last and of course if quite a difficult question, as partly it depends on the quality of parts inside the machine, but also the local environment and how it is treated. Generally, we say the lifespan of a PC/Mac is 5-7 years and a laptop is 3-5 years, although a repair may needed within this time.

Also, life tends to be prolonged if parts within the computer are replaced, such as the hard drive for a solid state drive (SSD).

We do recommend that computers are serviced yearly, as this will identify issues that could cause problems. For example, we recently visited a customer with a 5 year old computer that was very slow. We replaced the hard drive for a solid state drive and the computer was a fast as new. The customer was very happy!!

5th and 6th September

This weekend should have seen the town beaches crammed full of kites of all shapes and sizes filling the air and delighting the families who get so much out of the event each year. However, although social distancing doesn’t worry us (we get tangled up if we get close to each other so kiters are into 5m plus anyway) other things do worry us. There are many local residents who have concerns about any event that could bring people to the town. With all the reports of bad behaviour and the Covid cases following each sunny weekend it’s understandable.

Our kiters would be self-sufficient in their motor homes but anyone coming to watch the event would have to use public toilets and queue for food and drinks with many other beach users. So reluctantly we have to say we will miss you all but we will be back in 2021 with an even bigger line-up, kiters from all round the world and all the other attractions you expect to see with this event.

Setting up a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme Setting up a Scheme is quite simple provided you follow a few rules!

First thing to do is to canvass your residents to ascertain interest, you will rarely get 100% interest, but 80% is a good benchmark to obtain. Obviously pointing out the benefits maybe in a circular letter would be a good way to proceed.

You will need to charge an annual subscription to cover the cost of signs, paper and printing ink, and depending on the number of interested house, something around £2 per household should suffice.

Neighbourhood Watch signs for erection on lampposts can be purchased, two types are available, metal and plastic, metal is obviously more expensive. These are affixed with heavy duty plastic ties, or with the metal signs, a special fixing which is better. Make sure the signs are not placed near an accident black spot to distract motorists.

Friday 25th September – Closing date for the tallest sunflower competition The town council are encouraging the young people of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge to aim high with their sunflowers, whether growing them in pots or flower beds – have your tape measures at the ready.

Anyone up to 17 years of age, who grows a sunflower can enter the competition to win a gardening pack.

All you need to do is submit the photograph of your sunflower using the entry form on the website.

Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society (BHCS) is a friendly, non-auditioned choir based in Burnham-onSea and has approximately 50 members with differing levels of musical ability. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at the Burnham Methodist Church Hall in College Street. Traditionally there have been two performances each year. The choir works with a professional accompanist for rehearsals and performances and has generally performed a repertoire of sacred, secular, classical, and stage music. Membership is open to all levels of experience, and we welcome newcomers.

The Friends of St Peter and All Hallows Church West Huntspill Friends Project to fund repairs to Church windows We are delighted to say that after just 12 months since launching The Friends, with the community support we have received by membership fees / donations and events, we will be able to fund the quoted cost of repair to The Reginald Wade window on the South wall of the church. There are two similar windows requiring repair and we hope to fund this further work, although we don’t know the cost of this yet. As you can see your membership really does make a difference and allows us to do these repairs.
