Welcome…

Welcome to the October edition of LocalReach and what a bumper edition it is, with new SEED activities commencing across Burnham and Highbridge, history projects, singing, performances, gardening – the list goes on. Throughout the pandemic so many people have continued to offer their time and support for the benefit of others and we mustn’t forget to say thank you to all involved. So many of you, like myself, had to give up the activities that bring so much joy, for me it was my regular morning swim along with the amazing group who push themselves daily. Watching everyone pick themselves up and push themselves back to a level of fitness has been inspirational and after recently being asked if I was the lady who puts LocalReach together – you will all know who you are. For everyone starting to get some normality into their lives and for those who are still not sure or still struggling to return to how life was – don’t give up.

I hope there is something in this month’s LocalReach for you to think about getting involved with as we drift towards the shorter days and the clocks going back at the end of the month.

Spring Forward Fall Back In the past, knowing the exact time was much less important than it is now.

With increasing urbanisation and industrialisation, however, the pattern of people’s working day was becoming regularised and didn’t necessarily fit with the natural day. In 1818, the factory owner, Robert Owen, was one of the first people to see the benefit of daylight saving and put the clocks forward by half an hour at his cotton mills in New Lanark.

Although clearly a move intended to improve the efficiency of the mills it’s true to say that Owen was a radical reformer and did work hard to improve the conditions of his workers.

By the 18th century clocks were sufficiently accurate to record local time but this varied from place to place. With the introduction of the railways, it became increasingly clear that time needed to be

standardised and in 1880 Greenwich Mean Time was recognised nationally.

It was not until the 20th century, however, that the idea of a national summer time was introduced.

In 1907, an English builder called William Willett published a pamphlet called The Waste of Daylight, which advocated advancing the clocks in Spring and returning to GMT in the autumn. Although he and others lobbied parliament to adopt the idea there was considerable opposition it and although a Daylight Saving Bill was introduced in 1908 there was not enough support for it to pass.

Willetts and others continued their campaign and gained support during World War I when it was seen as a way of conserving scare energy resources and thus helping the war effort. Germany began daylight saving in April 1916 and on 17th May 1916 The Summer Time Act was passed in Britain. The clocks went forward one hour on Sunday, 21st May and returned to GMT on 1st October. Those old enough to recall the days when watches and clocks were mechanical may well remember that the advice was to move the hands forward 11 hours in October to prevent the mechanism breaking.

Gardening Jobs for October • Continue deadheading your flowering plants, as in recent years the flowering season has gone on well into Autumn and severe frosty nights have not materialised.

• October is a good month for planting new evergreen hedges such as conifers, privet and box.

Always prepare the ground well and administer a good all round fertiliser around the new plants in early spring.

• Keep planting spring flowering bulbs. If you are planning on leaving these in the planting position for future years plant them slightly deeper than the recommended depth and a good handful of grit or sharp sand sprinkled under the bulbs will help with drainage. Leave your tulip planting until next month.

• Towards the end of the month is the time when bare root plants are available and this goes on until the end of March. Now is the best time to plant as the soil is still warm and the newly dug up plants will settle in easily. You shouldn’t need to water them in too much unless the weather stays really dry. • Plant garlic and over- wintering onions outdoors and sow some sweet peas indoors, the peas can be planted out in early March. Harvest pumpkins and squashes and collect bean seeds, make sure the seeds are dry before storing them.

• Grass growth on lawns should start to slow down with colder temperatures and lower light levels so lift the height of mower blades. There is also time to lay new turf.

• In terms of frost we don’t know what to expect this month and we might even get away without having any. If an early frost has blackened the foliage of gladioli, dahlias, cannas and begonias lift them out of the ground carefully and store them in a cool, frost free place for the winter.

• Clear away stakes and bean sticks that are no longer needed and remove old vegetation. If your Brussels sprouts are in an exposed position stake

Keep them on the dry side, wash all the leaves and remove any dead foliage.

Strength to strength A Burnham-on-Sea residential care home for the elderly, The Towans, Berrow road, are going from strength to strength after 15 years of ownership.

Tom and Debra, a husband and wife team, took over The Towans in 2007 and have taken the business from strength to strength over the years. One of their top priorities along side providing exceptional care has been to enhance the home environment for their residents. This has included developing the communal areas including the garden lounge, TV lounge and replacing the small sun room with a substantial conservatory complete with air conditioning. The garden has had raised beds added for the residents to tend to flowers, fruit and vegetables. A large pergola has made the lawn a more usable space in the height of the summer, under it the tables and chairs make it a favourite spot for residents to enjoy a cream tea and summer entertainment. At the end of last summer a new heated visiting cabin was installed which adheres to covid safe visiting rules for friends and family to visit all year around.

Over the course of the last year with the global pandemic it has been a hard time for the care sector in general. Tom and Debra are incredibly proud of how the whole team have navigated this difficult time. The standard of care reminded outstanding throughout. Every Monday and Wednesday - Balliol Short Mat Bowling Club We have been bowling in a COVID secure way since the easing of lockdown restrictions in May, initially with existing club members. Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm by zoom with a talk by Rod Hutchings about “HMS Fox” The ship was launched in 1893. After a long service the ship was decommissioned in 1919, sold in 1920 and scrapped in Watchet harbour by the Cardiff Scrap and Salvage company, in the autumn of 1923.

Pumpkin Pie Perfect for Halloween

Preparation time: 40 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour 40 minutes + chilling time Serves: 8 Ingredients: 750g pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled, deseeded, and cut into chunks 350g sweet shortcrust pastry (make your own or buy ready-made) 140g caster sugar ½ tsp salt ½ tsp fresh nutmeg, grated

filling will depend on the colour of the squash you choose. Some have a more yellow flesh, like butternut squash and others like the winter squash have a much more orange flesh. They will both taste equally good!

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use it to line a 22cm loose-bottomed flan tin. Chill for 15 mins. Line the pastry with baking parchment and baking beans, then bake for 15 mins. Remove the beans and parchment, then bake for a further 10 mins until the base is pale golden and biscuity.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.

Method:

Increase oven temperature to 220C/200C fan/ gas 7. Push the cooled pumpkin through a sieve into a large bowl to make a puree. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, salt, nutmeg and half the cinnamon. Lightly beat together the eggs, melted butter and milk, then add to the pumpkin purée and mix well. Pour the mixture into the tart shell and bake for 10 minutes, Reduce the temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and continue to bake for 35-40 mins until the filling has just set.

Place the chopped pumpkin into a large saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Cover with a lid and simmer for 15 mins or until tender. Drain and allow to cool. The final colour of your pumpkin

Remove from the oven and allow to cool before removing the pie from the tin. You can Mix the remaining cinnamon with the icing sugar and dust over the pie or decorate in a suitably spooky style..

The UK’s PSTN landline network is being switched off in 2025 What does this mean? The PSTN is the classic analogue telephone system which, even today, is used for landline calls in most homes and small businesses.

Alongside the rapid growth of the internet, the old analogue phone lines have been preserved as an independent network to handle our landline calls.

However, due to complications involved in maintaining such old equipment, it is now confirmed the analogue network will be phased out over the coming years, then switched off in 2025.

Will our landline numbers be lost? Fortunately, we can keep our numbers and continue to make and receive calls. Because of the rollout of fibre-optic broadband, we can now perform our landline calls over the internet, using VoIP (Voice over IP). All analogue phone lines will need migrating to a digital VoIP solution within the next few years.

What steps must be taken? In due time, your landline provider will reach out and assist with the transition away from analogue onto a VoIP solution, including onsite fitting of new VoIP equipment. Your fibre broadband connection will then take care of your phone calls.

As well as fixing computer problems, we can help with a wide range of technology difficulties, such as home phone problems so please get in touch if you would like a visit.

Burnham-on-Sea Grand Fireworks Display planned for 7th November 2021 After a year off, it is planned that the Grand Fireworks Display will return to the Burnham-on-Sea Esplanade in November 2021 to support the ‘Sedgemoor Weekend’ carnival event. The council’s consideration of the public health position, availability of volunteer support and light levels has meant there has been some uncertainty over the date of the fireworks event. Councillors have now agreed they are keen to proceed with a display on Sunday 7th November.

The town council and Skyburst, the Bristol Firework Company, are working closely with bodies concerned with public health to ensure comprehensive risk assessments are in place. Further details about the event will be published in due course and letters are being sent to affected residents, businesses and services.

New Mobile APP launch gets Somerset Walking and Talking about Climate Change Somerset Trails as a new free app available to download, cleverly designed to explore the impacts of climate change and bring to life the different ways nature can help Somerset adapt to climate change. Designed by partnership project CoAdapt, Somerset Trails is funded by Somerset Rivers Authority and the EU’s Intereg 2Seas Programme.

The app combines walking maps with, videoguided tours, including a section specially designed for kids. Whilst on the trail, video content, that was filmed on location, is triggered at key points, featuring tour guides such as Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Shelly Easton and the fantastic 8- year-old Iona, as well as local experts. The trails talk about landscape features, climate change and how nature-based solutions can be used to help us adapt. The first trail to be launched begins in the centre of Wedmore, taking in breathtaking views across the Somerset Levels, and meanders through meadows, past dew ponds and over historic ridge and furrow field systems. Later in the summer, a second trail will be launched by the National Trust, featuring behind-the-scenes footage of one of their most intriguing projects – beaver reintroduction and stage zero river restoration on Exmoor.
