We have seen markets re opening during the summer and a new normal becoming established, the welcome return of the eat: Burnham Festival returns at the end of the month along with the cautious re-opening of some of the local groups and societies.

Gardening Jobs for October

• October is a good month for planting evergreen hedging such as conifers, privet or box always prepare the ground well and improve the soil by adding well-rotted manure or compost.

• Lift the height of mower blades as grass growth begins to slow.

• Clear away bean sticks and other garden stakes where plants have stopped growing and remove rotting vegetation.

• Store root crops in dry sand or very dry compost and store top fruit in a cool frost free place.

• Continue planting spring flowering bulbs; small bulbs should be planted 5-8 cm( 4- 8 in) deep and larger bulbs 10-15 cm (4-6 in) deep. A handful of grit in the planting hole will help with drainage. Leave the planting of tulips until next month.

• Plant up some containers for spring colour and think about using some small growing evergreen shrubs which are always available in garden centre’s at this time of year for your containers. Keep them in a sheltered spot over the winter period.

• Continue deadheading plants as the flowers fade and remove dead stems from perennials.

• Plant garlic and over wintering onion sets outdoors but sow sweet peas indoors to produce strong plants which can be planted outside in early March.

• Continue preparing the ground for new fruit trees and shrubs.

• Towards the end of the month if a cold spell threatens bring any tender plants indoors and keep them on the dry side over winter. Check them over regularly and remove any dead foliage.

• Harvest squashes and pumpkins and collect seeds from runner beans, make sure these are completely dry before storing them.

Every Tuesday – Penguins Swimming Club

Why Make a Will, Have a Power of Attorney or Consider Tax Planning It is important that make your Will, if you have family or dependents on whom you wish to specify benefit. Otherwise, your estate will be the subject of statutory intestacy provisions, and these may not match your own wishes.

If you wish to preserve your wealth, you can make use of trusts - will trusts that operate after your death, and lifetime trusts that you can set up now. In both scenarios, you can preserve wealth for your family for generations to come.

The trustees manage the wealth objectively and so preserve it. The beneficiaries will not be able to squander the capital. Additionally, if you have a disabled child, for example, a trust is a good way to manage their money, and so lifestyle, in the future when you are unavailable to be there to help them.

Where a person has already died, all may not be lost, as the beneficiaries of the will or intestacy can vary the terms of it within two years of death. Additionally, anyone may make a claim on a person’s estate, which may or may not be successful.

Computer keeping you waiting around? A simple upgrade can make all the difference.

While there are various reasons that computers become slow, such as lack of proper maintenance, or virus infections, the most common reason is slow, aged hard disks. These disks store the data on a computer and play a large role in determining the overall speed of the computer. Sunday 25th October – Berrow Dunes Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers Volunteers will be working on land owned by Sedgemoor District Council (SDC) and operated as a Nature Reserve. SDC provide our insurance cover, but to comply, we ask that those under 12 be accompanied by an adult. We supply protective gear where required as well as tools and training.

Please wear suitable work clothes and bring boots or Wellies, waterproofs, drinks and lunch.

We meet at 10:30am and aim to finish about 4:00pm. - but come and go as you are able.

Usually, there is an opportunity to explore the reserve with the officer, warden or manager. Some regrowth that needs clearing and some work to clear footpaths and sea buckthorn clearance. We are a small very friendly group who usually meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Community Centre, Berrow Road, Burnham on Sea TA8 2ET. Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society (BHCS) is a friendly, non-auditioned choir based in Burnhamon-Sea in Somerset, and has currently 50 - 60 members with differing levels of musical ability and experience. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at the Burnham Methodist Church Hall in College Street. Traditionally there have been two performances each year. The Spring Concert usually features an orchestral ensemble and guest soloists. In the summer term, a few of us get together to have an informal Summer Sing.

Burnham-on-Sea to Highbridge Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Walk The walk takes you from South Esplanade, Burnham-on-Sea to the mainline railway station in Highbridge, approximately following the route of the former Somerset & Dorset Railway Highbridge to Burnham branch line. The trail commences at the Information Centre on the South Esplanade where a scale model of the Burnham Railway Station can be seen and leaflets detailing the history. A number of heritage panels are displayed, recently unveiled by the Burnham on Sea Railway Heritage Group along with memorabilia.

Somerset Choral Society Autumn Programme As the current Government Regulations for control of the Covid 19 Virus still prohibit indoor Communal Rehearsals or a Concert in a church this autumn, the Somerset Choral Society is continuing with a programme of Virtual Rehearsals using the Internet Platform “Zoom” up to December. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday starting at 7:30pm and run until around 9:00pm up to Wednesday 16th December except Wednesday 28th October (School’s Half Term). The Society AGM will be at 7:30pm on “Zoom” on Wednesday 7th October.
