Welcome to the November edition of LocalReach, and with Christmas fast approaching many of you will be pleased to hear that the 1st Huntspill and Highbridge Scout Group are resuming their Christmas post collection and delivery service this year to the local area. Look out in the next issue for the post box locations. Cards will be collected and sorted throughout December and delivered by Christmas eve.

With the number of cases of Covid increasing it is worth contacting any group or society promoting events in this month’s edition prior to visiting, to confirm the activity is still running. There is plenty to fill your time, with history talks being offered by John Strickland linked to the Nornen project, a Triple Bill by Stage 2 in Berrow village hall, entry forms for next year’s Highbridge Festival of the arts, some interesting facts about the history of Carnival along with craft fairs and music performances on the run up to the festive season.

Looking ahead, Ian Jefferies is busy coordinating activities associated with next year’s Jubilee, details can be found in this month’s edition. I look forward to receiving your editorial for the December edition over the next few weeks.

Guy Fawkes night and Carnival Everyone knows the story of the Gunpowder plot whereby Guy Fawkes and his fellow Catholic revolutionaries wanted to put an end to their persecution at the hands of Protestants and planned to assassinate the Protestant King James 1, by blowing up the Houses of Parliament on 5th November 1605. The plot was foiled due to a lastminute tip-off, and Guy Fawkes and his conspirators were hung, drawn and quartered.

When the news was heard that the plot had failed, celebrations spontaneously erupted across the country, especially in Somerset which had always been a strongly Protestant region. In Bridgwater, an especially radical town, a wooden boat was apparently filled with 100 tar barrels and set alight at Cornhill. Effigies (or “guys” after the conspirator Guy Fawkes) of the plotters were carried through the streets and added to the blaze. The tradition of burning boats became an annual event until they ran out of old boats to burn and inebriated revellers started to burn perfectly good boats! Lighting bonfires and setting off home-made fireworks continued to be the key features of the celebration, as did having a ceremonial procession. Although

bonfires stopped being part of the celebrations after Cornhill was laid with flammable asphalt in 1924, the processions continued, developing into the elaborate carnival parades we see today with their illuminated floats.

Fireworks also continued. What marks Bridgwater out as different from other carnivals is the tradition of squibbing. A squib is essentially a large firework strapped to a cosh (a solid block of wood which is attached to a large pole). After the carnival, squibbers line the high street and the squibs are lit sending showers of sparks into the air creating an impressive display.

It is estimated that there are around 220 traditional ‘English’ carnivals still taking place, quite different from the Afro-Caribbean carnivals exemplified by the Notting Hill Carnival, and around 30 illuminated carnivals in south-west England, the most famous being the seven of the ‘Guy Fawkes’ circuit: the first on the first Saturday in November is in Bridgwater, followed Burnham on Sea, Weston super Mare, North Petherton, Shepton Mallet. Wells and Glastonbury.

Sadly, there will be no carnival processions this year because of Covid but the dates are now published for 2022.

Gardening Jobs for November • Finish forking over borders or if you want some extra work double dig the plot with a spade. Winter weather will break down the ground, but it will probably be the end of February before you can use it for planting if you double dig.

• Plant tulips, spring bedding such as wallflowers, primulas and forget-me nots and any other spring bulbs.

• Sweep or rake up fallen leaves to make a heap or store them in plastic bags with some small holes in the bottom. Some people mix in a couple of handfuls of grass clippings to help with the breakdown process. It could take over a year to produce leaf mold, but it really is a great material to add to composts or enrich the soil.

• Continue to cut back perennials and tender garden plants like dahlias and cannas will need lifting and kept inside in frost free conditions. If you want to leave them in the ground cover them with a deep mulch of old compost and they might survive the winter but there is always the risk of losing them.

• Raise any container plants above the ground by using pot feet on small broken paving slabs.

• Weather permitting plant new perennials, roses, trees, and shrubs in well prepared ground and remember to firm your plants in well. Fruit trees and bushes are readily available during this month, and it is the ideal time to plant them. There is still time to order bare root plants as that season continues right through to the end of March.

• Garlic and onion sets can still be planted as can hardy broad beans. Varieties like Aquadulce and the Sutton perform well.

• If you keep houseplants in centrally heated rooms help them out by placing them in trays or saucers of moist gravel.

• Consider what seeds you need to purchase for next year particularly those that will need sowing early.

Council prepares to commemorate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2nd – 5th June 2022 Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council is asking residents to help shape the celebrations to commemorate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year. We want to encourage both communities in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge to actively get involved in The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee events next summer, as we want to make sure our communities are heard. Highbridge Festival of The Arts The syllabuses for the Festival in March 2022 are live on our website: www. highbridgefestival.org.uk. We’ve already received lots of entries for the Dance Section, so if you would like to enter, please do so very soon as places may be limited.

The Music Section welcomes entries for everyone from beginners to virtuosos – audiences are very friendly, and you can choose to perform without the pressure of formal competition. We would love to welcome individuals and groups to the Speech & Drama Section – there are set verses for poetry recitals and opportunities to showcase original plays, stories & poetry. Our adjudicators in Music and Speech & Drama would love to ‘See What You Can Do’ and can give you pointers and tips to progress your talents and interests. Many previous entrants are following careers in the performing arts, having first taken to the stage at Highbridge Festival of the Arts. The North Sedgemoor Local History Group It seems ages since we had our last meeting, but I can assure you the Committee members have been discussing the Covid situation regularly and we have decided it is best to leave it until 2022 before restarting our meetings. We have also been advised that the conditions for our use of King Alfred School Lecture Hall now require us to have Third Party Insurance, provide a risk assessment and have all portable laptops etc. that require use of mains electricity, to have what is known as a Portable Appliance Test certificate. There is also a substantial increase in the fee for booking the hall to £20/hr. We have a committee meeting

First and Third Monday of each Month – West Huntspill Community Cafe The café is now open at the back of St Peter & All Hallows Church. Open to everyone, from the village and beyond – dogs welcome! Every Monday and Wednesday - Balliol Short Mat Bowling Club We have been bowling in a COVID secure way since the easing of lockdown restrictions in May, initially with existing club members. A couple of additional experienced bowls players have also attended since the end of lockdown in July. Our view is that we will be willing to accept inexperienced players for one-to-one coaching as and when COVID cases have greatly reduced, hopefully in October.

Fruit & Nut Bark – a great gift to make for Christmas Ingredients 75g cup walnuts 450g good white chocolate, finely chopped 75g dried cranberries 75g medium-diced dried apricot Directions • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. • Using a pencil, draw an 8-by-10-inch rectangle on a piece of parchment paper. Turn the parchment paper over so the pencil mark doesn’t get onto the chocolate and place it on a sheet pan.

• Place the walnuts in one layer on another sheet pan and bake for 8 minutes. Set aside to cool.

• Place three quarters of the white chocolate in a heat-proof glass bowl and put it in the microwave on high for 30 seconds.

• Stir the chocolate with a rubber spatula, return it to the microwave for another 30 seconds, then stir again. Continue to heat and stir in 30-second intervals until the chocolate is just melted.

• Immediately stir in the remaining chocolate and allow it to sit at room temperature, stirring often, until it’s completely smooth.

(If you need to heat it a little more, place it in the microwave for another 15 seconds.)

• Pour the melted chocolate onto the parchment paper and spread it lightly to fill the drawn rectangle.

• Sprinkle the top evenly with the cooled walnuts, the cranberries, and apricots. Press the nuts and fruit lightly so they will set in the chocolate.

• Set aside for at least 2 hours until firm or refrigerate for 20 minutes.

• Cut or break the bark in 16 pieces and serve at room temperature.

Enjoy.

Poached Pears Pears are in season right now and this is such a great way to serve them Method: Preheat the oven to 180C/gas mark 4. Pour the wine into a saucepan with the sugar, spices and lemon zest and bring to the boil, stirring dissolve the sugar.

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour + 5-10 minutes for the sauce Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 750ml bottle of soft, fruity red wine 125g granulated sugar 2 cloves 1 stick of cinnamon Zest of half a lemon 1 vanilla pod, split (optional) 4 hard pears Creme de cassis

Meanwhile, peel the pears. Leave the stalk intact but cut out the core at the base. Use a non-metallic ovenproof dish just wide enough to hold the pears in a single layer and lay them in there. Don’t use a large dish because when you pour the spiced wine over the top - the fruit should just be submerged.

Cover the dish and bake for about an hour, checking after 45 minutes. When the fruit is tender, but still holds its shape, lift it out of the liquid and set aside.

Then pour the liquid back into the saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce by about half until it becomes thick and syrupy, then taste and pour in the creme de cassis to taste. Pour the sauce back on to the pears and serve warm or cool, with ice cream, cream, or custard.

Saturday 7th November - Burnham-onSea Grand Fireworks Display After a year off, it is planned that the Grand Fireworks Display will return to the Burnham-on-Sea Esplanade in November 2021 to support the ‘Sedgemoor Weekend’ carnival event. The council’s consideration of the public health position, availability of volunteer support and light levels has meant there has been some uncertainty over the date of the fireworks event. The town council and Skyburst, the Bristol Firework Company, are working closely with bodies concerned with public health to ensure comprehensive risk assessments are in place.

Further details about the event will be published in due course and letters are being sent to affected residents, businesses, and services. Windows 11 is a free upgrade for Windows 10 users – but can your Windows computer get it?

With the recent release of Windows 11, we urge all readers of the importance to upgrade from Windows 10 onto Microsoft’s new operating system as soon as possible.

There are however a great number of people who are running into problems obtaining the free upgrade, facing errors which claim their devices are incompatible.

There are various factors which feed into whether a device is deemed eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade or not. Failure to meet even one of the Windows 11 minimum requirements can disable the option to upgrade.

The good news is, much can be done to resolve or work around these issues and complete a successful upgrade. This can include cutting down on disk usage to free up required disk space, enabling or installing requirements such as TPM 2.0, installing more system memory, and using other tricks to complete a manual upgrade to Windows 11.

So, if you are encountering problems with your upgrade, we are here to help. We can investigate the causes of the blocked upgrade and take appropriate steps to resolve them.
