We hopefully have the warmer months to look forward to and the lifting of some of the restrictions we have all had to live with for the past few months.

With all the local walking I have been doing, I have come to appreciate the banks of the River Brue, the crashing spring tides on the seawall and the wonderful area I call home. It will be lovely to take my walks a little further afield – but am in no desperate rush. Let’s enjoy what Somerset has to offer by marking Somerset Day on Tuesday 11th May 2021.

Your May Garden

What To Plant For Instant Impact Gardening is often about the patient process of growing from seed, bulb or small plant and nurturing it over time. If you want to balance this out with immediate colour, foliage and scale in your garden, you can always find larger plants and those in bloom right now for instant impact.

What to Plant for Future Interest • Small herbaceous plants.

These can now be planted straight into the garden if it is mild.

• Summer-flowering perennials: agapanthus, crocosmia, dianthus, gaura, gazania, leucanthemum, marguerite, osteospermum, rudbeckia, salvia.

Hillier Tip: Both 9cm and 1litre herbaceous plants are a cost-effective way to add summer colour to your garden.

Growing Your Own In May, everything from fruit, vegetables and salad crops, to lawns & flowers, will be in vigorous growing mode. It isn’t too late to sow some vegetable seeds if you haven’t yet. Sow runner bean and French bean seeds directly in mid-May. Hillier tip: These climbers will need support to grow up and a wigwam is a simple and attractive

solution. Simply place three to four bamboo canes into the ground and tie together at the top. Sow the seeds around each cane at the base – you will only need a single seed at the base of each cane for climbing runner and French beans.

Plant chilli pepper or sweet pepper plants into the ground, or into containers or small pots if space is at a premium.

Hillier tip: Planting marigolds in your vegetable patch can deter whitefly and attract ladybirds, which helps to control aphids. They also emit a substance from the roots that deters nematode worms.

Gardening Jobs For May • Continue to hoe those weeds regularly taking care not to damage the shallow roots and stems of your cultivated plants.

• Pull up spring bedding plants like forget-me- nots and wallflowers when they have finished flowering.

If your spring bulbs still have green leaves feed them weekly with a high potash tomato feed to put goodness back into the bulbs for next year’s flowers.

• All tall growing perennials , which need support, should be staked and the new growth tied in.

• Prune back any climbers and shrubs, like forsythia and lilac, that have finished flowering and remove dead and spindly growth.

• Clip hedges such as privet from now onwards and mow lawns regularly and weed and feed if necessary.

• Hardening off plants is necessary when they have been raised indoors and need toughening up for a couple of weeks before planting outside.

The standard method is to gradually expose them to colder outdoor conditions. A cold frame is ideal

for this as the lid can be opened on mild days.

Otherwise find a sheltered spot outside and move the plants outside. If it is going to be cold bring them in at night and eventually they will only need this protection on really cold nights and can be planted outside with no protection .Towards the end of the month hopefully frosts will be over.

• Slugs and snails will be active so take whatever precautions you are comfortable with to control them.

• Watch out for aphid attacks on indoor plants, they multiply rapidly as the weather warms up. Increase greenhouse ventilation.

• Early sown crops should be growing away nicely now look after them and weed and feed.

• If you are sowing lettuce, spring onion, radish and beetroot sow little and often say every three weeks.

• Sow sweetcorn, courgettes, marrows and pumpkins in individual pots for planting out later you can also add swede and runner and French beans to this list if you haven’t sown any yet.

Running this way reduces your risk of injury and burnout. The sustainable pace should be slow enough to maintain a conversation without huffing and puffing, but not so slow you can sing your favourite song!

Find your time of day – We all have a natural body clock. Try running at different times until you find the perfect workout hour for you.

Did you start Couch to 5K during lockdown? Did you fall in love with running? Or do you need motivating?

Here are our top tips as runners.

Walk – You heard us. Walk to warm up, loosen your muscles, and prime your joints for the activity of running. If you walk the first five to 10 minutes of your workout, especially if it’s early in the morning, of you’ve been sitting at a desk for hours, it’s easier on your body and you’ll find your rhythm more quickly.

Go slower – Not walking this time. We mean find your sustainable pace. This is the pace you can run

Eat wholesome carbs beforehand – The meal you eat before your run should be the most carb rich one of the day (think fruit, veg and wholegrains rather than chocolate cake!), so your body has plenty of ready-to-burn fuel. Obviously don’t eat JUST before you run…but you knew that, right?

Make it recreational – Choose a great playlist, or your favourite audio book or podcast. Or run with a friend to catch up on all the gossip or put the world to rights. This is your time, and it should be enjoyable, so you’ll look forward to it and want to keep doing it.

Why We Love an Online Quiz movie of your life?’. You click the link, answer a couple of questions and the song title or photo of the celeb pops up, along with, ‘Tracey is a hardworking woman. She’s been through some tough times but always keeps smiling. She is fiercely loyal and will stand by her friends through thick and thin. If you hurt her, she may not show her feelings outwardly but rest assured, she’ll never forgive you.’ We could all probably be described like that, and even though we know it’s hokum, like horoscopes, we lap it up precisely because these online quiz results are relentlessly positive, and while we love learning things about ourselves, we love learning good things about ourselves even more. We share it with friends because it validates the positive things we feel about who we are.

My friend Sally looked up from her phone and chuckled. ‘Look…this is me as a dog!’ She proffered her phone. The pic was of a Chihuahua, wearing Ray-Bans, lying on a sunbed next to a cocktail… actually pretty representative of Sal, with her diminutive stature and love of beach holidays.

Why do we find these online quizzes irresistible?

Why do we have the urge to know what we will look like as an old lady, a man, or a biscuit?

Most of us are more than a little self-obsessed.

We like to talk about ourselves and we like to learn about ourselves. 40% of the words we utter in life are about us!

Researchers in psychology at Harvard University ran a series of studies comparing how people felt when talking about themselves, compared to how they felt when talking about other people. The researchers found that, no matter how the studies were set up the results indicated that the reward centres in human brains were stimulated most during self-disclosure. We actually get a brain buzz from talking about ourselves!

Online quizzes and surveys tend to ask questions such as, ‘What is your favourite colour from this selection?’ or ‘Would your ideal Saturday evening be spent a) dancing in a nightclub? b) camping in the Cairngorms? c) curled up with a good book in front of a fire?’ etc. The quiz allows self-expression based on personal preferences. We disclose something about ourselves which releases the shot of dopamine which makes us feel good.

But we also like to learn about ourselves. Have you or any of your friends every taken part in an online quiz or survey which starts off by declaring, ‘Every woman has her own Eighties anthem. Which is yours?’ or ‘Which celebrity would play you in the

Strength to strength A Burnham-on-Sea residential care home for the elderly, The Towans, Berrow road, are going from strength to strength after 15 years of ownership.

Tom and Debra, a husband and wife team, took over The Towans in 2007 and have taken the business from strength to strength over the years. One of their top priorities along side providing exceptional care has been to enhance the home environment for their residents. This has included developing the communal areas including the garden lounge, TV lounge and replacing the small sun room with a substantial conservatory complete with air conditioning. Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni A classic Italian supper

RECIPE While the sauce is cooking, trim and discard any tough stalks from the spinach and wash the leaves well. Put the still-wet spinach into a saucepan over a medium heat, cover and cook, shaking the pan occasionally, until the spinach is completely wilted, then run under cold water to stop the cooking process. Once it’s cool enough to handle, squeeze until dry, then chop finely.

Melt the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat, add the garlic, cook for one minute, then add the spinach. Sauté to coat everything with the butter, then remove from the heat and leave to cool.

Heat the oven to 200C (180C fan) / gas mark 6.

Mix the ricotta and spinach and add most of the grated cheese, reserving some for the top, season the mixture well with nutmeg and salt.

Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 1 hr 20 plus cooling Serves: 2-4 Ingredients: 250g fresh egg lasagne sheets

Pour a thick layer of tomato sauce into the bottom of a medium baking tin. Make a sausage shape of filling on the short end of one of the pasta squares and roll it up, until you have slight overlap. Put the filled tube seam side down in the baking dish, then repeat with the remaining pasta and filling; pour the remaining sauce on top. Bake for 30 minutes.

Scatter the remaining grated cheese over the dish before serving and place under the grill until it bubbles.

For the sauce: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and cut in half 1 carrot, cut in half lengthways 1 celery stick, cut in half 800g tinned plum tomatoes 1 small bunch basil Splash of balsamic vinegar For the filling: 250g fresh spinach 1 tbsp butter 1 small garlic clove, peeled and crushed 175g fresh ricotta 30g Italian hard cheese, grated Nutmeg Method: Heat the olive oil in a wide pan over a medium heat, add the onion, carrot and celery, and fry for two minutes, until they start to brown. Add the tomatoes, basil, and balsamic vinegar, bring everything to a simmer, then turn down the heat and cook gently for about 30 minutes, until thick. Remove the vegetables and herbs, then blend the sauce until fairly smooth, and season to taste.

What is Telephobia?

I laughed when I first saw it. I would do almost ANYTHING to avoid speaking on the phone. For many people, ‘telephobia’ as it’s known, is real and is particularly common among those of us with social anxiety.

Humans are social creatures so speaking on the phone is daunting because we’re denied all social cues: gestures, body language, and eye contact.

We rely solely on the voice and this can make us hyperaware of our own voice and choice of words.

Anxious people often rate texting as a superior form of communication. It allows time to think about responses, which takes the pressure off interactions. It also means we are not the sole focus of someone’s attention, which can feel unnerving, and pauses in the conversation can feel hostile and interminable.

Speaking on the phone though is a skill, and like any skill we improve the more we do it. The more practice you have, the less anxious and more confident you’ll feel. Start by making a list of the people or organisations you need to call and articulate what it is about the call that provokes anxiety. Are you worried you’ll be judged, or you’ll stumble over your words and sound stupid? When you hang up, articulate what went well so you acknowledge your successes.

If telephobia is interfering with your life or threatening your job then consider seeking cognitive behavioural therapy. This is a highly effective treatment for social anxiety. Don’t suffer in silence.

It is also important to carefully choose the best antivirus product to protect your devices. Unfortunately, the quality of the product is often overlooked in favour of choosing the big names or one that came pre-installed.

The truth is, some services do offer much tighter protection than others, so the decision does matter a great deal. We often see the harmful consequences of running none or weak antivirus protection, which can involve irreversible damage.

Show your BBQ some TLC as Lockdown eases The start of the beautiful British spring is just upon us with some great bank holiday weekends to look forward to, your BBQs will probably be getting its first airing after having been packed away for the winter. This also coincides this year with us being allowed to have another household come and join us socially in our gardens.

However, if you want to be able to eat from it safely this spring, you will need to do a spot of cleaning before you use it for the first time.

Luckily, the experts at OvenGleamers have some top tips for brilliant BBQs so that you can cook with confidence and look forward to another year without the dreaded scraping of months’ old burnt on grease hindering your lovely fresh food.

‘Greasy BBQ grills are as much a part of the great British spring as the ever changing weather,’ explains OvenGleamers Graeme Robertson. ‘They are a bit of a nightmare to deal with and rather a mess. The key to getting the very best from them each time is to show them the same love that you would give to your kitchen oven.’

1. Soak it up Clean those racks before you start cooking on them – burnt on grease turns to carbon and then gets stuck to your lovely fresh food. Clean the racks by soaking them overnight in your bath with some washing powder, then rinse them off. Or, scrub them with washing up liquid and a wet scourer!

2. Liner time Keep the racks clean in the first place by cooking on a non-stick oven liner. Just place the non-stick liner on top of your usual BBQ rack and cook your food on top of that. Then, just rinse the liner under the tap with soapy water or pop them in the dishwasher once you’ve finished cooking.

3. Rust away Before your first BBQ of the year, your trusty BBQ needs to be cleaned thoroughly before using it. It might seem a pain now but you’ll thank me for this later! Ensure that the whole of your BBQ is completely degreased before attempting to cook on it. You really don’t want last year’s burnt on grease spoiling your delicious fresh BBQ meats, fish and halloumi slices!

Furry Friends Why guinea pigs make perfect pets

LOCAREACH The fact that they can live up to 7-8 years (average around 5-6) is both a bonus but also something to consider if your child requests a guinea pig aged fifteen but plans to move out to attend university at 18!

Guinea pigs are rodents with definite personalities so take the time to interact with a few before taking one home. Some are shy and quiet; others are bold and vocal. You need to choose one (or two) that suit your personality and expectations.

When I was twelve I begged my dad for a pet. He vetoed a dog or a cat but one night he arrived home with a large cage which housed two chubby balls of cuteness. It was my introduction to guinea pigs.

I christened them Siouxsie Sioux and Roxy (which gives away my teenage musical tastes). They became my characterful and vocal companions for the next six or so years.

One of the most delightful characteristics of guinea pigs is the sounds they make. They purr like a cat when they are happy and relaxed. They make soft squeaks and squeals to communicate and chatter their teeth when disgruntled. They also exhibit a behaviour called ‘popcorning’ - they jump up and down when happy or excited). My son (who has two guinea pigs) calls it their ‘happy dance’. It’s cute to watch; and they really do like people. They bond with their owners and are as interactive and friendly as cats or dogs. The flip side of this is that if they are ignored they can become depressed.

Guinea pigs, or ‘cavies’, are short-tailed, roughhaired South American rodents. They are longerlived and friendlier than hamsters, and more socially acceptable than rats (disclaimer…I love rats, but many people don’t).

Guinea pigs are pretty hardy and healthy if fed properly. They can be prone to dental issues and bladder stones, but proper nutrition and regular medical check-ups help prevent this. They originate from cool climates and don’t do well in hot, humid, or freezing conditions, so avoid positioning the cage next to a radiator or keeping them outside unless you have a very sheltered warm shed.

The warnings in the previous paragraph notwithstanding guinea pigs are actually easy to care for. They require hay, fresh water, fresh vegetables, a small quantity of specialist guinea pig pellets, and a vitamin C supplement each day. Their cage should be as large as possible and lined with paper-based bedding. It needs to be spot cleaned daily and thoroughly cleaned weekly. They are very sociable and highly fertile so don’t keep a male and female together unless you want baby guinea pigs!

They are great pets for younger children under parental supervision. They can be short or longhaired and come in a variety of colours. The longhaired ones are very pretty but do require frequent grooming.

Thursday 6th May – Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner election On Thursday 6 May, residents in Sedgemoor District Council area will have their say on who represents them at the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner election. Voters have a range of options for casting their ballot – in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on 20 April, and for a proxy vote the deadline is 5pm on 27 April. Burnham on Sea Pagan Group As I write this we are still under lockdown rules and the Community Centre is still closed. I believe that if all goes to plan the Centre should be opening in May. But that very much depends upon the wider covid situation. I am still unsure when we shall be able to return to our monthly meetings, certainly not until all restrictions are lifted which may be in June or possibly later if the expected third wave of covid hits us. If the rule of six is still in place when the centre reopens I cannot open up for our group as we have a large group, and as I have said before the group must be open to all it is not by appointment. 17th May Exhibition Somerset Art Works - In Pursuit of Spring Somerset Art Works have joined forces with Black Swan Arts in Frome, Somerset for a unique SAW Members’ exhibition and the first at Black Swan Arts since last year’s coronavirus lockdown. ‘In Pursuit of Spring’ has been inspired by poet Edward Thomas’ account of his journey by bicycle between London and Somerset to meet the arrival of spring in 1913. Responding to various themes in Thomas’ book, such as hope, change and renewal, around 50 Somerset Art Works members have created artwork to illustrate the Somerset leg of Thomas’ journey.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the natural world has been an important consolation for many of us. Now, when we all need a sense of hope and renewal, Thomas’ descriptions of springtime Somerset – the ‘noble elms’, verdant banks teaming with celandine, pennywort and cranesbill, the calls of larks and linnets – are a poignant reminder of the beauty of our county. This exhibition brings together Thomas’ text with contemporary images and representations of Somerset, and is a wonderful way to celebrate the re-launch of Black Swan Arts.
