I can sense the excitement in the information I have received and just hope that nothing prevents us from a gradual return to normality. With uncertainty still around us it is important to follow the guidelines and everything printed is correct at time of receipt. Gardening Jobs for July • Net any ripening fruit unless grown in a fruit cage and pick fruit when it is young and fresh.

When strawberries are finished cut off old leaves and tidy up the beds, water them if there is a dry spell. With summer fruiting raspberries cut out the old canes and tie in the new ones as these will bear next year’s crop, • Keep greenhouses and tunnels well ventilated and damp down flooring on extra hot days.

Feed your indoor crops regularly using a high potash feed on fruiting ones.

• Most plants are planted out by now and your job is simply to look after them. Always keep a close eye for any pests and diseases and water plants efficiently when they need it. Keep deadheading your flowering plants and feed weekly with a liquid feed.

• Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering to keep them tidy and to encourage new shoots for next years growth. Cut back to just above a bud which is pointing in the direction you want the stem to grow.

• Keep cutting hedging if required and mow lawns regularly.

• Keep sowing broccoli, beetroot, lettuce, radish and oriental greens on a little and often basis plus if you sow before the middle of the month, you could also have a late crop of French beans.

• You can lift any overwintering onions, plus shallots and garlic. If you have spring sown onions and sets, use one or two but leave the rest to ripen properly in August.

• Nip out tops of outdoor cordon tomatoes after four or five trusses have set fruit.

• As always keep that hoe moving and get rid of those weeds.

Strength to strength A Burnham-on-Sea residential care home for the elderly, The Towans, Berrow road, are going from strength to strength after 15 years of ownership.

Tom and Debra, a husband and wife team, took over The Towans in 2007 and have taken the business from strength to strength over the years. One of their top priorities along side providing exceptional care has been to enhance the home environment for their residents. This has included developing the communal areas including the garden lounge, TV lounge and replacing the small sun room with a substantial conservatory complete with air conditioning. The garden has had raised beds added for the residents to tend to flowers, fruit and vegetables. A large pergola has made the lawn a more usable space in the height of the summer, under it the tables and chairs make it a favourite spot for residents to enjoy a cream tea and summer entertainment. At the end of last summer a new heated visiting cabin was installed which adheres to covid safe visiting rules for friends and family to visit all year around.

Over the course of the last year with the global pandemic it has been a hard time for the care sector in general. Tom and Debra are incredibly proud of how the whole team have navigated this difficult time. The standard of care reminded outstanding throughout. The staff have been going above and beyond what is expected of them to keep residents safe and happy, including the team getting vaccinated as soon as it became available locally.

Sounds of Summer 2020 deprived us of concerts and festivals, so get that summer vibe on and providing children are versed in general good manners, and they’re not throwing food or punches, even young children can enjoy them.

Priory Court Care Home’s oldest resident shares fascinating life stories for Local History Month As part of Local History month, residents at Priory Court Care & Nursing Home have been enjoying reminiscing sessions with the support of their families and loved ones. The team at the Burnham-On-Sea nursing home asked families to send in photos and stories to use for reminiscing activities.

The family of Margaret Reed, who recently celebrated her 111th birthday, shared stories of her growing up in Northern Ireland. Margaret was born on 20th April 1910 in Loughgilly.

“Margaret’s family have shared some fascinating stories about her early life.” said Wellbeing Coordinator Rachel Latimer. “We’ve learned that she lived on the top of a very steep hill, with no electricity or running water. Together with her three sisters and five brothers she attended a small village school, which was a six mile walk each way.

Luckily for Margaret and her siblings their Grandfather was a cobbler, so the children all wore shoes to school which was quite unusual at the time. It’s hard to imagine that now.”

On leaving school, Margaret’s first job was in a small village called Market Hill. As a surprise on her first day of work her father gave her a bicycle to get back and forth, a great expense in the day. Coming home from work, she came around a corner too fast and ran into the local policeman, knocking him over a wall!

In 1942 Margaret joined the WRAF, of which is very proud,

during one posting she was responsible for calling the Air Ministry every night to report the Station’s loses. At the end of the war, she was stationed at RAF Farnborough, and at the time was one of the first people to sit inside Goering’s private plane that had been captured and flown back to England.

In September 1945, she Married Donald Reed and moved to Leedstown in Cornwall where Donald worked for the Electricity board. Their son David was born in 1947.

To make extra money she would pick daffodils and primroses in the fields, bunch them and send them up on the overnight train to the flower market in London. In 1955 the family moved to Bristol and for 5 years Margaret worked at BAE Filton, home of Concord.

In the mid-1960s they moved to Weston-super-Mare, where Margaret ran a Bed and breakfast. Margaret’s son David commented “Margaret is not only proud of her Irish roots but also of her Cornish connection and in later life she loved going back to visit. She now gets a birthday card from the Queen every year and a letter and medal from the Irish President. As far as we know my mother is the 7th oldest person in the UK”.

Real Men Wear Sunscreen And hats and sunspecs…oh yes they do.

Is there anyone who doesn’t know that sunbathing with too little skin protection is dangerous? As well as being painful sunburn can be a prelude to skin cancer later in life. Unfortunately, it seems that men are complacent about sun protection, and die from skin cancer at almost twice the rate of women.

Sunburn is the damage caused to skin by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Sadly for Brits, UV rays are not blocked by cloud cover so we should always use a sunscreen, even in the absence of blue skies.

And the sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm, so use this time to take a break in the shade.

LOCALREACH If you know you are going to be exposed to the sun for several hours, wear a wide-brimmed hat, loose long-sleeved shirt, and long trousers. Baseball caps may be the hat of choice for British men but they don’t provide the necessary protection for the delicate skin on the back of the neck. Choose a ‘Foreign Legion’ style hat instead with cloth that hangs down at the back, or a wide-brimmed Panama. Don’t forget close-fitting wrap-around sunspecs to protect your eyes. Look for sunglasses stamped with BS EN ISO 12312-1 for general use, and BS ISO 12312-3 if you participate regularly in outdoor activities such as running or cycling etc.

Poor application of sunscreen is a common way to get sunburnt. Areas often overlooked are inside the top of the arms, tops of the ears and at the edges of clothes and swimwear. Apply sunscreen generously and reapply regularly, especially after swimming or exercise. Take extra care with balding heads where the skin is extremely delicate. Use a total sun block or a hat.

Remember, some medicines, including some antibiotics and anti-depressants, can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunburn. Ask your GP for information if you are concerned.

Olympic Month: Are you a Bronze, Silver or Gold Chef?!

Musings of an OvenGleamer Bronze Medal (and about my level!) cooking is one of life’s simple pleasures and the skill level is simple too. In my eyes you use the microwave and can cope with a pan of boiling water for pasta and potatoes. I have even managed a 3 course meal with my combi-microwave. I cheated with the starter buying ready made prawn cocktails, then cooked a chicken using the grill function that browned the top and heated the ‘steam in a bag’ vegetables to produce a Roast Dinner. For dessert I “pinged” chocolate sponge puddings with chocolate sauce and my meal was complete…simples! But my microwave now needs a clean as it’s covered in chicken bits on the walls –the chicken partly exploded! Oops!

More budding chefs (most of you) come in at least a Silver Medal standard. You’re great at using a hob and an oven with several pans boiling away on the hob top whilst a delicious joint is roasting away in the oven. You are classic multi-tasker with better time–management skills than me. My partner falls in this category – she does a mean Roast Beef, Yorkshire puddings and mountains of vegetables – all cooked to perfection and appearing on the table at the same time. For dessert she produces an apple pie out of oven with creamy custard. She then expects me, a professional oven cleaner, to clean our cooker? Does she not understand that it’s my day off?

Personally I believe the Gold Medal winners are you BBQ cookers! How anyone can produce an array of succulent steaks, juicy sausages and melt in the mouth burgers as well as foil wrapped salmon from just a metal grid over some heat producing fuel, I’ll never know. Then to serve them with a selection of fresh salads and summer cocktails – that skill level is way beyond my reach. My friends manage this Olympian feat without even breaking into a sweat and I can enjoy the fruits of their labours! Then with a messy BBQ they phone me to clean it – fed and paid – Gold Medal for me on that one!

Prosciutto di Parma Salad with figs and Blue Cheese The simplest and quickest of simple suppers, for eating al fresco on a warm summer’s evening Ingredients: 4 figs, washed and quartered 4 slices Parma ham 60g blue cheese (Dolcelatte if you want authenticity) 2 tbsp chopped basil leaves Handfuls of rocket leaves 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper, to taste Method: Divide the rocket, figs, ham and cheese between four plates.

Sprinkle with basil leaves and drizzle with oil.

The UK is suffering from increased numbers of new scams, which often utilise the pandemic in order to manipulate the scam victim into handing over personal information and resulting in their money stolen. An estimated £2m has been lost due to coronavirus scams, according to Action Fraud.

These scams are succeeding because people are caught off guard, so in order to fight back, we need more people informed and prepared. Fortunately, a new free service has been launched to make this easier than ever in order to help in the UK’s fight against fraudsters.

Which? has launched a free scam alert service which aims to keep people informed. Those who sign up will receive regular email alerts as new scams are uncovered, including examples and steps to take in the event money is stolen. The service is called Which? Scam Alerts, and aims to keep the public one step ahead of the scammers. Head over to www. which.co.uk/scam-alerts to read more and sign up.

In other news, Windows 10 has a new big update out – codename 21H1, which brings various new features and bug fixes. This is an important update, so be sure to get it. We are a small friendly group. We usually meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Community Centre, Berrow Road, BOS TA8 2ET. At 7.30pm We usually have either an outside speaker or a topic of discussion and a full program of events. Due to the continued uncertainty of organising and planning any events for 2021 and early part of 2022 decisions about our meetings will be made on a monthly basis. I feel that I cannot invite any outside speakers to the moot until next year when I hope we can get back to a full program of events.

The government has assigned a £3Billion to a project referred to as Bus Back Better which is a national strategy as a part of recovering from the pandemic. The Prime Minister tells us that this is a part of what Levelling Up means. Calling citizen scientists! It’s a bug’s life Car drivers and passengers asked to count bugs squashed on car registration plates after a journey.

An innovative app to survey insect populations has been launched by Somerset, Kent, Gwent and Essex Wildlife Trusts. The user-friendly Bugs Matter app brings meaningful citizen science to the pockets of thousands and will help wildlife organisations better understand how our insect populations are faring.

Smartphone users can take part by downloading the free Bugs Matter app. The concept is simple: before making an essential journey in a vehicle, clean the number plate and then when you reach your destination count the bugs squashed on the number plate using a ‘splatometer’ grid that will be posted to you. A photo and details are then submitted via the app. You don’t even need to be the driver of the vehicle you are travelling in (though you will need their permission).

Download the Bugs Matter app from your app store today and be ready to survey from 1 June to 31 August 2021.
