Welcome to the July edition of LocalReach – This month’s edition has some history about our local area, pointers for those of you who are taking up gardening, possibly for the first time, with the lovely weather experienced during the spring it has certainly brought the flowers on early in my garden, there is the opportunity to enter a photo of your garden into a competition this month, more details inside or possibly for the younger members of the community to enter their sunflowers!

With so many events and groups still not operating it is again an altered edition this month and hope that things will change as we learn how to adapt and cope with the situation we are all facing.

One thing that is clear is that the community spirit is still very evident whether assisting with the crisis, encouraging people to get involved with a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme or simply keeping an eye on your neighbours. The Burnham and Highbridge Coronavirus Community Support Group is still operating as I write offering support to people where needed and can be contacted 10am to 2pm seven days a week. There is a voicemail facility too if you call outside those times, but voicemails may not be actioned till the following day. The group are happy to take your call on 01278 393231 or you can email burnhamandhighbridge@gmail.com for prescriptions, shopping, phone call or anything else ad hoc – this may be subject to change between now and going to print.

Gardening Jobs for July • Most plants are planted out, so your task is to look after them. Keep deadheading flowering plants and keep them well watered if necessary. A good heavy watering is about 22litres per sq.m/4 gallons per sq.yd. As a general rule water in the evening to minimize evaporation but allow the leaves to dry before nightfall.

• There is still time to sow some French beans for a late crop plus kohlrabi, beetroot, broccoli, lettuce, kale and oriental greens. Wallflowers, sweet William and stocks sown now will flower next year.

• Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering to encourage new shoots for next year’s blooms.

• Earth up and stake brussels sprouts and other greens in exposed sites.

• Cut hedging if required and mow lawns regularly.

• Keep that hoe going and remove those weeds.

• Nip out the tops of outdoor cordon tomatoes when 4 or 5 trusses have set fruit.

• Net any ripening fruits unless growing them in a fruit cage and remember to pick fruit when it is young and fresh.

• Keep greenhouses and tunnels well ventilated and damp down flooring if necessary .Feed greenhouse crops at least once a week using a high potash feed on fruiting crops and flowers.

• When strawberries have finished fruiting cut off the old leaves, tidy up the beds and water if needed.

• You can lift some onions if they are a useable size but leave the main crop until August. Shallots and garlic should be lifted and dried.

Big Update to Microsoft Edge Microsoft have completely recreated their Edge browser, and first impressions are positive.

Microsoft’s new browser, which retains the same name “Edge” was originally released in 2015 alongside Windows 10, is currently available as an optional download. The new browser will update itself according to its own schedule of every six weeks, meaning the updates will not be part of the main Windows Update system. The all-new Edge runs on the same code as the popular Google Chrome browser, and thus delivers an overall experience similar to that which Chrome has to offer, except in lieu of a Google-driven backend we see Microsoft take the wheel.

Impressively, the new Edge seems to outshine Google Chrome almost across the board, including speed. Microsoft has long trailed behind when it comes to browser extensions or “add-ons”. This is no longer the case because almost all Chrome extensions work perfectly with the new Edge, and so Chrome users can consider comfortably migrating to Edge for a faster experience without the need to lose their favourite extensions.

One of the most useful features is the ability to synchronize your Edge profile to your Microsoft account.

This means your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, themes, history and more, can sync across multiple devices, including new devices bought down the line, without any effort.

The new Edge can run on Windows 7 or later, but note we strongly recommend all readers ensure they are running Windows 10. Those who prefer other browsers, we suggest you give Edge a look regardless. He could have been talking about Covid19. During June ‘normal’ life began to reappear. Shops and schools began opening up, but there is such a long way to go to get back to ‘normal’ – whatever that is. The novelty of lockdown Britain evolved into frustrations as normal life was eroded. We all feel we want to take control of our lives again.

Well, we are all learning a lot about Covid19 and virus medicine, but it is evident that there are still a lot of unknown unknows we have yet to discover.

The governments own medical advisors are talking of ‘a second wave’ – we are not out of the woods yet, medically or socially.

Some interesting facts about our long lost local railway at Highbridge and Burnham • The original single line track from Highbridge Wharf to Glastonbury was opened on 28th August 1854 and the first passenger train arrived at Burnham on 4th May 1858.

• In its heyday there were 5 platforms at Highbridge for travellers to Burnham, Glastonbury, Wells, Bath and Dorset. These were additional to the two main line platforms there today.

• There was extensive maintenance and coach building facilities for the whole of the Midlands Railway in Highbridge. When this closed in 1930, over 300 local people were made redundant.

• If you wished to travel to Burnham your train would pass under Walrow Road Bridge, cross over the main railway line of today. Crossing gates gave safe passage over what is now the A38 with the route then running to the side of Newtown Road.

You would pass near where the playing fields and Apex Park are now before coming into Burnham very close to where the Marine Drive and Station Approach roads are.

• Circa 1860 animals were taken in trucks down the jetty and transferred to a ship for transport to South Wales.

• In 1858, if you looked out of your carriage window, you would see sailing ships in Highbridge Wharf, a large saw mill, three brick and tiles works plus a brewery on your journey to Burnham. There were so few buildings Brent Knoll and the Quantocks were clearly visible from your window.

• Burnham station was where the traffic lights are now at the junction of Station Approach and Pier Street. This area was sand dunes before construction started.

• A water tower once stood near where the Station Approach road car park entrance is now. The room below the tower was used to repair shipping and railway sail cloth.

• In 1878 ashes from the locomotives were brought to make up thoroughfares for Cottage Row, South Street and Chapel Street.

• Early railway advertisements referred to Burnham as Burnham Spa as there was a Spa House where people took ‘health giving’ mineral waters and baths.

Is ear wax causing you a problem?

Jane Wilkins is a fully qualified NHS trained Nurse. With Bsc (Hons) and BSHAA qualifications. A member of the NMC and RCN. Jane will be carrying out your assessment and treatment, using either micro suction or irrigation (traditionally known as syringing).

What is Microsuction?

This is a technique, using a fine low-pressure suction device to remove the plug of ear wax, without the use of water and some noise from the machine is to be expected. If the wax is hard, or your ear/ears have been compacted for sometime, it is advisable to use warm (not hot) olive oil drops or spray for 5 days prior to your treatment.

What is irrigation?

This technique uses warm water at a controlled pressure to remove the wax. An irrigation tip is inserted in the ear, at a precise angle and flushes the compacted wax out.

COMMUNTIY Day, scheduled for Wednesday, 5th August will be cancelled. The mammoth free event - which is the highlight of many children’s summer holiday - takes a voluntary committee and Sedgemoor District Council many hundreds of hours work to organise the 50+ activities. With the uncertainty about the length of the lockdown, as well as social distancing, it was felt that the event would be impossible to control safely and effectively; given that last year over 7,000 people attended. It was felt that it would be unfair for the committee to put in hours of work to plan the day which could ultimately be cancelled at a later date. Rosie Pike, Chair of the Playday Committee said “We are really sad that we have had to take this decision, but it is the right thing to do. Have no fear, we will be back, bigger and better in August 2021 and we look forward to seeing you then.”

Burnham on Sea and Highbridge Town Council launch garden competition This year the Britain in Bloom and Burnham & Highbridge in Bloom competition will not be operating due to the coronavirus outbreak. With the effort that has been undertaken by people in their gardens the town Council felt this should not go un-noticed. The deadline for entries is Friday 28th August 2020, the council would like to invite residents of Burnham on Sea and Highbridge to send in photographs of their gardens, pots or balconies. Please include with your photograph, your name, address, contact telephone number and email address whilst email entries are preferred – if you are not able to do this, please pop a photo with your details into an envelope and post to the Old Courthouse, Jaycroft Road, Burnham on Sea TA8 1LE. Entries will be judged later in the year by a panel and prizes awarded.

Somerset Sight – Volunteers Sought Volunteers to visit visually impaired people in the Sedgemoor area once lockdown restrictions are lifted are being sought. There are many people who are blind, and sight impaired which increases their risk of loneliness and isolation. We recruit local volunteers and match individually to a person who would like the company of a friendly volunteer who lives within their area. The volunteers usually visit once a week or fortnight and are fully supported by our charity, all expenses included mileage are paid.
