Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society (BHCS) is a friendly, non-auditioned choir based in Burnhamon-Sea in Somerset, and has currently 50 - 60 members with differing levels of musical ability and experience. Has the time come to upgrade or replace your computer?

There are a great number of risks associated with using out of date or aged computer equipment and those that don’t do something about it face serious issues, including lost data due to equipment failure and for those running older version of Windows (such as Windows 7 or Windows 8) being hacked due to aged, weak computer security. This is because Windows 8 and older are not as secure to run as Windows 10.

Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft which makes it particularly dangerous to use. Machines running older versions of Windows can also struggle to run new software and fail to be compatible with a growing number of common websites.

Ask yourself how old is your computer, as we discover a good number of people forget and become prone to serious risk. The fact is, almost all computers that are 5 years or older should at least have some likely to fail components replaced or possibly the whole computer upgraded. This especially applies when computers are around 7+ years old. Data then needs transferring over from the old computer, which is a delicate process that we advise an engineer should carry out, when possible. If your computer is becoming slow, this can be a sign of incoming data loss too.

Historical facts that you might not know about Burnham and Highbridge In the 1970’s archaeological excavations around Highbridge by Mr Sam Nash found much evidence of Roman occupation. At Hasting’s (in the area we know as Walrow) a substantial Roman building was uncovered and a Samian vessel was found at Pitt’s Tile Pit (Walrow) at a depth of seven metres. Samian ware is a common find on sites occupied during 1st to the mid-3rd centuries AD; the Italian producers’ wares were carried as far as India in the east, to Britain in the west.

In 1857 there were three wells in Burnham, one being at the Vicarage which was the living of Rev Dupuis.

However, when the water was analysed it was found to be contaminated as was the water from the well at the Hall (Community Centre). So for many years the Dupuis brought water by the gallon from the Archdeacon’s at East Brent. A gale in 1883 polluted all the wells which lead to water having to be supplied from Winscombe.

The local Gazette of 1891 recorded a snow storm with drifts of ten feet at Brean with snow drifts blocking the local railway lines. The Burnham to Highbridge train became completely snowbound and a scullery maid called Dyer who was unable to withstand the bitter weather lost both her legs from frostbite. To add to people’s miseries there was also a terrible flu epidemic.

It has been a tough year getting things off the ground working almost every hour imaginable - days and nights, but also much fun and extremely rewarding. I hear almost daily now “well, we’ve certainly seen a lot of your signs about”… which is nice.

Laurel & Wylde have never had the largest stock of houses, (although one day that would be nice too), and the main reason for this is because we are always running out of stock!

Looking at the exact data of ‘No. of Days on Market’ as in, the number of days (on average) it takes the agents in the Burnham area to sell their properties, (from 26th November 2019 – 26th November 2020) compared with the other agents in Burnham, we have ALWAYS been the No.1 Fastest Selling Agent (in Burnham) since opening. And we are currently selling our properties 51% FASTER! Something we are hugely proud of and something I have always wished from the business.

Balliol Short Mat Bowling Club The Balliol SMBC is situated at the Balliol Hall, West Huntspill. We meet on Monday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and on the second and fourth Fridays in the evening. The membership averages between 20 and 30 people and we are always ready to welcome new members. In addition to club sessions we hold club competitions for single, pairs and triples plus a winter umbrella league. We regularly enter local charity competitions and play local clubs in friendly matches. We are of course restricted at the moment due to Covid regulations but it would seem freedom is now on the horizon!

Highbridge War Memorial Trust Southwell House & Gardens Regd. Charity No. 304555 During the first lock down, the Highbridge War Memorial slipped through a loophole in not being able to claim the £10k government grant for village & community halls due to Southwell House not being a rateable building, particularly hard to take in when all other halls within the area were fortunate in receiving. This has caused immense strain and stress on the trustees/committee members on how

It was nearly the final straw that after successfully generating some much needed money for day to day running through GoFundMe, that criminal damage was caused to the windows of the building. The trustees are truly grateful to the following: Beech View Glass and Andy Hills who provided and installed the two double glazed units to the vandalised windows, CRS Building Supplies for the donation of external masonry paint and the duo team of Clare & Paul Gas for carrying out the decorating works to the building, using their own equipment – all free of charge.
