Beware of turning on backup to the cloud (Onedrive) Recently, we have noticed that Microsoft have initiated a popup message titled “Onedrive – Turn on Windows Backup” which invites you to click “Let’s get started”. This is a feature that wants to backup your important data such as documents and pictures to the Cloud.

If you store a lot of data on your computer this can cause problems, as if you accept, it will attempt to upload your data to Onedrive. We have noticed that this can cause extreme slowness in your computer/internet connection for hours or even days, plus if you hit the 5GB free limit, you can expect to be charged. Should this happen, you can look for the Onedrive application in the system tray which is located in the bottom right hand corner of Windows, and right click on it, then choose “Pause Syncing” and then “Quit Onedrive” – the affected folders, usually desktop, documents and pictures, then need to be moved (cut and pasted) from the Onedrive folder back to the profiles folder which is usually located in c:\users\ and a folder of your name.

We appreciate that some level of technical knowledge may be needed, so if this has happened to you and help is required, please get in touch via our advert on this page and we can arrange to resolve this for you.

Onedrive is a very useful tool for keeping your files safe and allows file sharing between multiple devices, but it does have its drawbacks, so if you feel that having your data stored in the cloud would be of benefit, we suggest you get in touch with us, so that we can guide you through this process.

Can being overweight cause incontinence?

A question often asked is whether being overweight and incontinence are connected.

And yes, several studies have shown that any excess weight in your abdominal area puts pressure on the bladder.

This means everyday activities such as laughing, sneezing, coughing or lifting heavy objects can prompt leaks, which is stress incontinence.

The extra pressure on the bladder can also result in the need to pass urine more frequently, which is urge incontinence. And occasionally being overweight can create a combination of urge and stress incontinence, which is mixed incontinence.

The good news is that you can do something about it. Research has shown that even if you lose just a bit of weight, particularly from around the tummy area, incontinence symptoms will generally improve, and sometimes even disappear completely.

Once you have satisfied yourself that the care provider is regulated and rated as Good or above by the CQC, have a think about the provider’s care team. These are the people that you will be inviting into your home, and who will be personally delivering your care, so you need to be able to trust that they know what they are doing, and are using their knowledge, skills and expertise to act in your best interest.

It would seem a basic requirement that the care provider has carried out a DBS (criminal record) check for their carers, and ensured that they are trained, authorised and equipped to deliver excellent care. However, you may be surprised to learn that many smaller, and often unregulated, care providers are not legally required to do this.

For your own peace of mind, choose a care provider that invests in ongoing training for their carers, has shown diligence in carrying

out background checks, and has policies and procedures in place to ensure that the care you receive is delivered by qualified, professional carers who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to deliver the care you need, in your own home.

3. Will you still receive care if your regular carer is unavailable?

Reliability and continuity of care is so important – you don’t want to be left wondering if your carer will turn up, or if cover will be provided for them if they fall sick or on holiday.

One of the benefits of choosing a larger, regulated care provider is that they have the flexibility to ensure that you will still receive the high-quality care you need, even if your regular carer is unable to support you.

As your care records are held by the care provider (not an individual), you can be sure that whichever member of your care team is supporting you, they will have access to the same information and understand how best to take care of you.

Make the right choice for you You are the best person to decide if a care provider will be able to support you to live the life you choose, in your own home. Use the care provider’s care assessment process to ask any questions you may have – remember that this is just as much an opportunity for you to interview your care provider, as it is for them to understand your care and support needs!
