Welcome to the February edition of LocalReach With February quickly approaching and spring starting to emerge beneath our feet, it is a time to think about the year ahead and prepare your gardens for later displays, the Burnham-on-Sea and District Horticultural Society have some useful tips to get you started in this month’s edition.

I have embarked on a new chapter in my life and returned to college – which I may not have done if we had not experienced the year we have been through, you may be considering doing something totally different whether this is trying a new sport, looking at local history or possibly trying some local walks.

Whilst many groups are not physically able to operate, many are still trying to reach out to people. If you are part of a not-for-profit group or organisation and would like to get in contact, please email me with details of how your group is operating during these challenging times.

OvenGleamers Top Tips for Loving Your Cooker This February 1. Invest in a non-stick oven liner. They help to catch all of those annoying drips that stick to the bottom of your cooker, which later can become a burnt-on mess. Easy to wash or pop in the dishwasher.

2. Do not use harsh chemicals inside your cooker. Instead, try a safer homemade option using items found around your household. For an all-purpose cleaner and deodorizer, mix together 4 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 litre warm water.

3. Get the wiping habit! Wipe away any spillages immediately with a damp cloth. Don’t give the mess a chance to stay. I know this sounds easy and as hard as you try it is a chore, the oven can still be hot and some of the stuff just doesn’t want to come off but stick with it. Get a microfibre cloth and use it wet with washing-up solution.

4. Cover your roast! You need to stop the grease spitting all over your lovely clean oven. To do this just put a lid on your roast tin or cover with foil or try a roasting bag. This way the inside of your oven and your grill (if its inside your oven) won’t become completely coated in grease when you are cooking. This grease, if left in the oven, becomes burnt on carbon in the long term and is very difficult to get off.

5. Get a professional in to Gleam It! If you really can’t get all the dirt and grime out of your oven yourself then maybe call and book someone that can. A newly cleaned cooker will be sparkling and clean and if you follow our other tips you will keep it clean, won’t you?

Julian Halsby examines the roles of Fanny Cornforth, Lizzie Siddall, Annie Miller, Janey Morris, Maria Zambaco, Alexa Wilding and Effie Ruskin in the private lives of the painters. Millais’ elopement with Ruskin’s wife broke up the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was a notorious scandal in Victorian Britain, he shows how these women were very modern in their attitudes and dress; and how the Pre-Raphaelite concept of beauty has endured.

Gardening Jobs for February

What is more valuable – your computer or your data?

When a computer goes wrong, people often realise that their data is far more valuable than the computer itself.

Far too often, we meet people who call us due to their machine not starting properly and, in some cases, failure of the hard drive means that precious data has been lost.

This can be in the form of documents, photographs, emails, address book and so on. To keep your data safe, the best method is to have both a local backup drive and also some online protection. The more places that your data is stored, the better, but please do check that these backup mediums are working, by creating a test document then check to see if you can restore from your backup. If doing such a task isn’t your thing, please see our advert on this page as we can help with setting up a backup and making sure all works well for you.

As a rule, February, in gardening terms, is classed as early spring but particularly at this time of year the weather is most variable. Therefore, garden tasks can be very much weather related.

• Make sure lawn mowers and other types of garden machinery are in working order for the seasons ahead.

• If it is not too wet spike or fork lawns to improve drainage.

• Finish any new plans for sowing or planting and purchase new seeds, fertilisers and compost.

Remember to bring inside new bags of compost well before you use them to “warm them up”.

• Shrubs and trees can still be planted if the soil conditions are suitable.

• Towards the end of the month complete the pruning of fruit trees and bushes and give them a high potash feed of sulphate of potash or if you are organic blood, fish and bone, Sprinkle about a handful around per plant and fork it in lightly.

A few interesting historical facts about Brean, Berrow, Burnham and Highbridge • In the 1850s there were two local companies vying with plans to build facilities for passengers travelling by sea from Cardiff to disembark at Brean Down. The plans included rail connections from the Down to the then Bristol and Exeter Railway at Lympsham.

• Many of you will have seen the blackened timbers of the Norwegian Barque the Nornen which was caught in a storm and driven ashore on 3 March 1897. What you may not know is that she was listed as bringing resin and turpentine from Brunswick, Georgia, U.S.A. on 7th January but there is little information as to what happened between then and the day before being wrecked.

• In 1944 it was Berrow and Brean Home Guard Platoon who took on the role of observers at Brean Down Fort.

• Freddie Fay was well-known in Burnham for his troupe of performers. He first appeared at Burnham either performing on the sands or in the Pavilion during the years of 1928 to 1939.

Laurel & Wylde Estate Agents open third branch!

Well, Well, Well, what a jolly exciting time for us all at Laurel & Wylde Estate Agents, opening our third branch in 5 years, whilst we cannot ignore all of the doom and gloom we are surrounded with, we felt it the perfect time to just keep pushing and keep proving that not all agents should be tarred with the same brush! We have a great team, a great product and we want you all to know about it!

We were absolutely delighted with the response to our New Years Eve unveiling, so thank you to all the local support and comments, we have worked tirelessly to get this office exactly how we wanted it and whilst we are somewhat biased, we think it looks amazing! We are certainly extremely pleased with the end result, as are the locals!

We are extremely excited to announce that we have had 8 instructions in the first week, with three of those being for our new Wedmore Office!

So, what has happened this last year or so?

Lets just cast our eyes back to July 2019 when our 2nd office in sunny Burnham-on-Sea opened. It was a funny old world out there then with the whole Brexit thing going on, but I felt something funny about the market and made a hugely tactical judgement to expand the business in the hope of a little boom when Brexit showed signs of coming to an end. Laurel & Wylde Burnham-on-Sea started to grow very quickly with our famous luminous orange boards popping up all over the place. At the start of 2020 the market was still very strange and not a great amount moving but oddly there was a fantastic buzz about the air and there was a lot of enquiries coming in!

Then on the 31st January 2020 The UK formally exited the European Union and BOOM the market went crazy, although short-lived because we were hit with COVID-19. I literally couldn’t believe it.

However, Laurel & Wylde are always looking for new and exciting ways of pushing the business forward so we had Bristol Film & Media help us out to really start pushing the VISUAL side of the business forward and we started to do the most stunning property videos! (which can be found on our YouTube Page). Due to most of the country being locked-down our bespoke property videos were a fabulous way to view properties virtually without actually having to go to the houses until you were ready to make an offer, amazingly we actually agreed sales on 3 houses just from people watching the videos!

From there we have gone from Lock-Down to Lock-Down and tried our hardest to not let that phase us, and with record sales in 2020 we felt the best thing to do was take advantage of an amazing opportunity that came up in Wedmore back in July. Laurel & Wylde Estate Agents have been so busy that unfortunately it took us until New Years Eve to actually get the office finished and open for the start of 2021.

So, the next chapter….

At present I am unable to collect any items you might wish to donate, however once this tier, hopefully reduces, we still need paperback books, jigsaws, unwanted gifts, toiletries and top quality bric-a-brac.
