Gardening Jobs for December

GARDENING to do. Remove all dead and damaged growth plus any crossing branches. Clear out some of the centre of the tree if it is congested to improve air flow. Check any tree stakes and ties.

• Do not prune stone fruits such as plums and cherries at this time of year as they are prone to silver leaf disease if you do so. Instead wait until warmer months.

• Keep checking stored produce regularly to make sure it is in good condition.

• Normal outside work in the garden is weather related, particularly in the winter months. Finish digging the plot when the weather allows and gather up any remaining fallen leaves left from autumn.

• Under cover and in containers like pots, modules or root trainers sow broad beans, shallots, onion sets and garlic. Early summer cabbages and onions from seed can also be sown but they will need some heat to get them germinating. All these will be planted outside later on in the new year.

• Have a general tidy up of plots, sheds and greenhouses and wash any dirty pots and containers.

• You can still purchase bare root plants which offer good value. If you buy some but planting conditions are not ideal just dig a hole deep enough to cover the roots and return the soil to protect the plants. When conditions improve you can plant them properly.

• Fruit trees, like apples and pears, can be pruned now but think carefully about what you are trying

• Plan ahead for next year by ordering new seeds, potatoes, plants and compost.

A chance to reminisce and have fun: creating meaningful opportunities for residents at Priory Court Care & Nursing Home Residents at Priory Court Care & Nursing Home are keeping busy with a varied schedule of activities and pastimes this Autumn.

“Now, more than ever, people need to stay active and occupied. We’ve been coming up with creative ways to help people mark days that are important to them such as Remembrance Day. Although many occasions are not being marked as they would normally, we’ve ensured that people are still able to observe days that are important to them” said Home Manager Vimal Samuel.

Activity and Wellbeing Champions at Priory Court work closely with the residents, their families and care staff to build up a plan of activities that is individual to each person. Understanding more about people’s life history enables staff to offer opportunities that are meaningful to people, enjoyable and fun. Recently residents enjoyed a games afternoon with everything from skittles to Mario Kart racing on the Wii. “We had a great afternoon enjoying lots of different games, they sparked lots of memories for people who enjoyed telling us about the games they played as children. They loved the opportunity to try something new too, there was lots of laughter”. Said Rachel, Activity Coordinator at Priory Court.

As part of the Country Court ‘Make a Wish’ initiative to facilitate personalised activities the care home has a ‘Wish Tree’ and residents are asked if there’s anything special that they’d like to do or a wish they’d like to fulfil. Recently residents enjoyed a Welsh Afternoon Tea at the request of a resident who had grown up in Wales and wanted the opportunity to share her memories with others.

“We had a great afternoon, we set all the tables with fresh linen and flowers and our Chef made Welsh cakes too” said Activity Coordinator Rachel. “It was wonderful to hear stories about St Fagans in Glamorgan and Victoria Park in Cardiff when it was once a zoo. We even heard the story of the zoo’s most famous inhabitant Billy the seal escaping when the River Ely flooded!”

For many of us, the Giles Annual was much a part of the festive season as turkey, the Christmas tree, crackers and the Queen’s Speech. Bringing Giles’ inimitable humour to brighten these darker days, The Arts Society Sedgemoor (TASS) has arranged a Zoom talk by Barry Venning, the British art historian, at 2:15pm. The talk will focus on Giles’ seasonal cartoons, particularly those featuring Grandma Giles and the Giles family. While these include some of his funniest cartoons, as the art historian William Feaver pointed out, they also demonstrate that he had few equals when it came to representing Britain in winter. There is no charge for the Zoom talk, but participants who are not TASS members are invited to send a suggested donation of £5 to The Arts Society Sedgemoor. Brand new Windows 10 update released, and support options for those with slow MacBooks or iMacs.

Microsoft has released their October 2020 update for Windows 10, codename 20H2, which brings some welcomed changes, including features to help with multitasking. The task-switch screen is now able to show Edge tabs separately, to help with jumping between pages. It remains important to keep up with these updates in order to stay safe online. To update your Windows 10 devices, open the start menu and click on the settings cog icon, choose “Update & Security”, and click on “Check for updates” which will prompt the device to check for available updates.

The coronavirus outbreak means that this winter will be even more difficult and worrying, as many older people will find themselves cut off from family and friends, facing higher costs to heat their homes.

Somerset Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter appeal encourages people who don’t need their Winter Fuel Payment to donate some or all of it to help local older people.

Online Surviving Winter donations that are made during the week-long Big Give Christmas Challenge - midday Tuesday 1 December to midday Tuesday 8 December will be doubled. So, not only will your donation be worth twice as much, but even more older and isolated people across the county will feel warm, safe and well this winter.

West Huntspill Community Pop Up Cafe On behalf of all the volunteers we would like to wish everyone who attends the cafe a very Happy Christmas. Usually each Monday we offer coffee, cake and company, free of charge to all. We feel sad that in the present circumstances we cannot have our usual Monday get together, especially for our local history enthusiasts - we miss you all. As we use the church building we unable to reopen at the present time but are really hopeful that the New Year will see a return to some normality and we will be able to open again. Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society (BHCS) is a friendly, non-auditioned choir based in Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset, and has currently 50 - 60 members with differing levels of musical ability and experience. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm until 9:30pm at the Burnham Methodist Church Hall in College Street.

Traditionally there have been two performances each year, one in December, usually held in the town’s Catholic church, and the other in March/ April usually held in St Andrew’s Church. The Spring Concert usually features an orchestral ensemble

LOCAL GROUPS and guest soloists. In the summer term, a few of us get together to have an informal Summer Sing.

Occasional requests to perform at local events are considered by the Committee. The choir works with a professional accompanist for rehearsals and performances and has generally performed a repertoire of sacred, secular, classical, and stage music. New members are very welcome. During the Covid-19 restrictions we are unable to meet in person at the moment. Instead, we are holding virtual rehearsals on line every Thursday evening at 7:30pm lasting for an hour. These are fun events, still with our professional Musical Director and live accompanist.

Burnham on Sea Pagan Group We are a very friendly group of like-minded people who would normally meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, except in December, at the Community Centre, Berrow Road TA8 2ET at 7:30pm. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 we have suspended all of our Moots until next March at the very earliest. We also celebrate the eight festivals of the year with Rituals and food sharing’s but this also has had to cease. We have a subject for discussion or an outside speaker each month. Topics we have discussed or were due to discuss are many and very varied with a program to suit all tastes and Paths ie. Crystal Healing, drumming workshops, sound baths, etc. Our outside speakers have included Prof Ronald Hutton, Peter Knight, Carole Carlton and Bee Helygan to name but a few. We also have a Facebook page with lots of interesting content.
