Welcome…

Welcome to the August edition of LocalReach – the summer is slowly drifting by and I am sure we have all had to be a little more creative with how we spend our free time this year. I have certainly taken up new hobbies, tried different local walks and spent more time with my family.

In this month’s issue there is information about groups that are starting to re-open (correct at time of collating) along with information for some of the groups and societies we have, that maybe during lockdown has released a desire to try something new, hopefully some of the contact information in this month’s edition will enable this to happen.

With gardening competitions running across Burnham and Highbridge and Gardening tips from the local horticultural society there is still plenty of time to work a bit of magic in your garden or tending to pots or containers. I hope you are able to keep yourselves safe and by all working together look after our community and each other.

Gardening Jobs for August • Make sure runner beans and French beans are well watered and pinch the tops out of climbing ones when they reach the top of their supports.

• As onions mature and leaves start to yellow harvest them and allow them to ripen in a dry room , shed or garage out of direct sunlight.

• Keep an eye out for the dreaded cabbage white caterpillars on brassica plants do your inspections on a daily basis.

• Keep tackling perennial weeds.

• Remove flower heads as they fade to encourage new flowers and liquid feed plants regularly.

• Keep sowing radish, lettuce, oriental vegetables, rocket and turnips.

• Cut back perennials that have finished flowering to half their height.

• Summer fruits such as blackberries, raspberries and hybrid berries that have fruited can be cut back. Take out all the canes that had fruit on them back to ground level but leave the new green canes produced earlier this year as it is these that will bear fruit next year.

• Take cuttings from heathers and pelargoniums, use young side shoots for this and place them in a pot of damp compost and keep them out of direct sunlight.

• Cut down haulms from potatoes at least ten days before lifting them as this will harden the skins better for storage.

• If you have to water do it thoroughly and think about adding a liquid feed. Damp down greenhouse floors on really hot days and keep doors and vents open during the daytime.

Fraudsters taking advantage of Covid fears As always, fraudsters are finding new ways to trick their victims into handing over sensitive information and stealing their money. Scam techniques are forever changing, so the only thing we can do is stay alert and remember the basic principles. Organisations, such as banks, internet providers, and the HMRC, will never call you out of the blue to request your passwords, account details or ask to remote access/control your computer. When unsure if you are speaking to a legitimate representative, end the call, get the real contact number from their website, and confirm if the initial call received was legitimate.

Lately we are seeing a phone scam where the fraudsters pretend to be the victim’s internet provider, tell them a new router is due, then attempt to gain remote access into the victim’s computer. We urge readers to spread this information to friends and family to increase awareness. If you have recently allowed remote access into your computer(s), let us know immediately (see our advert on this page) as you may have been scammed, and we would want to check your computer for viruses or key loggers which spy on your keyboard input. Once a fraudster obtains remote access, there are various malicious activities they often perform, such as encrypting your data, making it unreadable, so they can try and sell it back to you. Legitimate providers tend to email you with new offers (quoting your name and part of your account number), or occasionally write in the post, rather than cold calling.

To stay safe, be sure to run a powerful antivirus on your devices (never a free one), keep your computers up to date, and perform routine backups of your data. A new Windows 10 update, named the 20H2 update, is scheduled for release soon. This update will include a major update to Microsoft’s Edge browser and is set to improve Windows 10 performance across the board.

I rejoiced with those who said to me ‘let us go to the house of The Lord’ So begins Psalm 122, an ancient song sang by pilgrims as they travelled to the temple in Jerusalem A song reflected in the heart of many people in the country last month as Churches were amongst the places of Worship permitted to open their buildings again following the outbreak of Coronavirus.

For many, it felt like a homecoming- although home is not quite as we left it- Covid-19 has meant that we have new ways of being; sanitising; safe distancing, wearing face coverings perhaps. We can’t yet sing in churches, because the Coronavirus is still with us; so out of love for each other, we take every step we can to reduce the risk of transmission So in our local churches in Burnham and Highbridge, the ancient Psalm song is for now a song in our hearts, rather than on our lips.

House of God isn’t restricted to a building, no matter how beautiful and beloved; and in our area we are indeed blessed with some beautiful Churches!

Throughout Lockdown we have seen new innovations from Churches- services delivered by post and available online: new Facebook pages & groups; Twitter accounts and YouTube dedicated to spiritual reflection and exploration. With this has come an opening up of spiritual conversation, as each of us have done our best to reach out and help one another, practically, emotionally and spiritually.

The house of God, the place where The Holy Spirit dwells, is, and always has been, in the hearts of His people.

For some, returning to the church building is not a possibility, and some people have access issues and health that doesn’t permit attending worship in person.

Wherever we are, we can rejoice with those who say to us ‘let us go to the house of the Lord’, in our magnificent Churches and Cathedrals; in our kitchens; on our streets; on our beaches, towns, cities and countryside- right where we are, is the house of The Lord- our feet are standing in the gates of the Kingdom of God.

Wednesday August 5th 2020 - Apex Park Play Day It is with great regret that Sedgemoor District Council has announced that this year’s Apex Park Play Day, scheduled for Wednesday, 5th August will be cancelled. The mammoth free event - which is the highlight of many children’s summer holiday - takes a voluntary committee and Sedgemoor District Council many hundreds of hours work to organise the 50+ activities. With the uncertainty about the length of the lockdown, as well as social distancing, it was felt that the event would be impossible to control safely and effectively; given that last year over 7,000 people attended. It was felt that it would be unfair for the committee to put in hours of work to plan the day which could ultimately be cancelled at a later date. Rosie Pike, Chair of the Playday Committee said “We are really sad that we have had to take this decision, but it is the right thing to do. Have no fear, we will be back, bigger and better in August 2021 and we look forward to seeing you then.”

Country Court’s Care & Nursing Homes in Somerset declared COVID-19 free Staff and residents at Country Court’s four Somerset Care and Nursing Homes have been given a clean bill of health as tests for Coronavirus have been completed across all the group’s 32 care homes. Testing of all residents and staff for both viral (current) and antibody (historical) infection of Covid-19 has been taking place over the last few weeks at Priory Court Care & Nursing Home in Burnham-on-sea, Summer Lane Care & Nursing Home in Weston-super-mare, Stanton Court Nursing Home in Stanton Drew and The Laurel Care Home in Draycott.

“Our Care Homes have worked extremely hard to protect our residents against the threat of Covid-19. Following this testing, we have only had a handful historical cases across our Somerset Care & Nursing Homes and currently have no positive cases at all in these homes. This is fantastic news and a credit to the hard work and efforts of our staff. We know this does not mean the threat of Covid-19 has ended and we will continue to remain vigilant to its’ potential dangers, in order to keep our residents safe and well.” Said Alykhan Kachra, Managing Director of Country Court.

All Country Court homes remain closed to visitors however the policy is under review with a view to implementing socially distanced garden visits should the infection rates in the wider community remain low. Each Country Court Care Home has been provided with a tablet and residents have been experiencing video calls with relatives for the first time, as well as receiving numerous daily phone calls, cards and letters.

Morale at Country Court’s Somerset Care Homes remains high as staff go above and beyond to keep residents happy, healthy and entertained. Residents are enjoying taking part in the group’s annual gardening competition Country Court in Bloom, with numerous projects underway to bring colour to their gardens. Each care home continues to follow rigorous infection control procedures and the group has sufficient supplies of PPE to keep everyone well stocked and looked after.

Neighbourhood Watch Schemes The very first Neighbourhood Watch Scheme was set up in New York in 1964 after a woman was stabbed. It was rumored that 38 witnesses saw or heard the attack, but none of them called the Police or came to her aid. This motivated a community response and the first Scheme was set up.

Fast forward to 1982 and the first UK scheme was set up in Cheshire. Since then it has become the largest voluntary crime prevention movement in England, bringing neighbours together to create strong, friendly, and active communities tackling crime supported by the Home Office.

Neighbourhood Watch Network is the umbrella organization for these schemes.

What are the objectives?

• To improve community safety generally.

• To prevent crime by improving security, increasing vigilance, creating and maintaining a caring community and reducing opportunities for crime by increasing crime prevention awareness.

• To assist the Police in detecting crime by promoting effective communication and prompt reporting of suspicious and criminal activity.

• To reduce undue fear of crime by providing accurate information about risks, and by promoting a sense of security and community spirit, particularly amongst the more vulnerable members of the community.

• To improve police/community liaison by providing effective communications through Neighbourhood Watch messaging systems which warn Coordinators of local crime trends which they can disseminate to their scheme members, and by members informing the police of incidents when they occur.

Although schemes are core focused on crime, they provide a platform for members to come together and participate in social events. Our scheme runs social evenings such as skittles and quizzes, lunches, Xmas events, and issues a quarterly publication covering all sorts of topics.

We are a friendly, non-contesting band who play for pleasure all year at local fetes, flower shows, fairs and bandstands, and give several concerts a year in the Princess Theatre, Burnham.

A small, informal bunch of folk who like to natter about all things including gardening and gardens, watch slides and listen to talks by speakers both professional and amateurs and members! New members always welcome, we aim to meet every 2 or 3 months depending on the energy and whim of their secretary! No membership fee is required just a small entrance fee and support of the raffle to pay for the hire of our Church Hall. Sedgemoor District Council have approved the disposal of land adjoining Lakeside, Isleport, Highbridge In an hour-long debate, the members of the Executive listened to representations from members of the public who were passionately against the disposal of the land versus the need to provide additional housing to meet Government targets.

There is a balance needed between the clear need for new homes in response to the national housing crisis and local need; as well as making sure that people have access to important green spaces.

There are currently 2,452 households looking for homes across Sedgemoor an increase of 24% from this time a year ago.

The disposal of the undeveloped land will pave the way for the delivery of up to 121 new homes in the area in accordance with the Council’s adopted Local Plan (2019). In addition, to providing a range of new housing, the proposal will also provide large areas of equipped play space, further public open space and an attractive landscaped water course and improved walking and cycling links. More importantly, a dangerous surface-level crossing of the main railway line will be blocked off and replaced with a new cycle link from the A38 providing easy and safe access to the new play facilities from the nearby Springfield Road development. Network Rail had designated this crossing as ‘unsafe’.

There have been a number of objections including two petitions to this disposal and the Council fully understands and recognises these. The majority of these concerns have been discussed and debated through the planning process that has taken over four years, reflecting the level of concerns and complex issues that needed to be resolved.

This area offers the opportunity to deliver housing in a sustainable location close to local facilities and employment and will encourage walking and cycling. This is an important element of reducing CO2 emissions as part of Sedgemoor’s climate change strategy. It also provides high quality public open space that will include areas for children to play, something that is missing in this wider area and that will support wider health and wellbeing.

Help further improve Somerset’s streets during the coronavirus pandemic

A new interactive online mapping tool has been launched so people can have their say on temporary walking and cycling measures in Somerset. A number of temporary measures, including pedestrianised high streets, have been introduced to encourage social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic and positively support the safe movement of pedestrians and cyclists. in partnership with Town Councils, the schemes are being put in place by Somerset’s Covid-19 Active Travel group, which includes representatives from Somerset County Council, Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset West and Taunton Council, South Somerset District Council, Avon and Somerset Police and Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP).

So far feedback has been mostly positive with many town centres busy after the lockdown and pedestrianised roads helping ease crowding outside shops.

Working with ‘Commonplace’, the Active Travel group has developed an interactive mapping tool that enables members of the community to flag up areas of concern in a specific area where changes could make a positive difference. Comments will be reviewed, and temporary measures may be put in place or adjusted where appropriate. The site is being provided by ‘Commonplace’ for a sixmonth trial period to help inform plans to keep the residents of Somerset safe.
