Welcome to the August edition of LocalReach and Summer 2021. I hope that by the time LocalReach lands on your door mat that the restrictions will have been lifted, but that we all try to reduce any potential spread by good hygiene practices and allowing space for those who may still need to protect themselves. Groups have tried to run events and then during July had to cancel so fingers crossed (and toes) that August will see some normality.

Looking ahead to 2022 and the Queens Platinum Jubilee weekend of Thursday 2nd June – Sunday 5th June 2022, events are being organised around the country. Communities are being encouraged to celebrate together through the Big Jubilee Lunch by hosting a street party, picnic or afternoon tea. If anyone is considering organising an event please contact me at jacqui@localreach.co.uk it would be lovely to celebrate with our friends and neighbours and possibly establish a community working party to share in the organisation. Gardening Jobs for August • In traditional terms August is known as the late Summer period and nowadays often mild weather tends to prolong the growing season and although light levels fall temperatures might not and our garden plants keep going a bit longer than in the past.

• Damp down greenhouse floors on really hot days and keep doors and vents well open.

• Remove dead flowerheads as they fade to encourage further flowers and liquid feed plants regularly to keep them going.

• As onions mature and leaves start to yellow harvest them and allow them to ripen in a dry room, shed or garage out of direct sunlight.

• Cut back perennials that have finished flowering to half their height.

• Take cuttings from heathers and pelargoniums from young side shoots, place in a pot of damp compost with added grit, perlite or vermiculite and cover with a poly bag and elastic band .

• Trim lavender plants after flowering to keep them compact, cut back to the start of this year’s growth but not into old wood.

• In dry weather conditions water plants thoroughly and remember a good soak is better than little and often.

• Cut down dying haulms on potatoes about ten days before you dig them up this with harden the skins and make them better for long term storage.

• Keep an eye out for the dreaded cabbage root fly on brassica plants, check all your plants daily.

• Make sure climbing beans are very well watered and pinch the tops out when they reach the top of supports to prevent the plants becoming top heavy and to encourage some extra sides hoots.

• On summer fruits like raspberries, blackberries and hybrid berries cut back all canes that had fruit on them back to ground level this makes space for the new young green canes to grow as these will produce next year’s crop.

ColourFence Fencing - Keeping Hedgehogs safe in your garden ColourFence are often asked about creating hedgehog highways in our fences and we do so gladly!

There’s no better time to do our bit to make sure our gardens are hedgehog-friendly and, for that matter, are safe havens for all wildlife. During the long days of summer, hedgehogs will often venture out before it’s fully dark and activity an hour or so before and after sunrise/set in the summer is not unusual.

Hedgehog Highways Hedgehogs are known as the gardeners’ friend but their numbers are in decline so it’s important that we do everything we can to help them. Providing shelter, wildlife rich gardens and food are great ways to help them thrive but helping them access your garden is hugely important too. Hedgehogs travel around one mile every night in search of food and a mate so ensure hedgehogs can pass freely through your garden by creating Hedgehog Highways – a small opening between your garden boundaries (a space of just 13 x 13cm is enough for any hog to get in and out of your garden!).

Feeding hedgehogs Leave out foods like tinned dog or cat food (not fish-based) and crushed dog or cat biscuits. Specialist hedgehog food is also recommended and can be bought from wildlife food suppliers.

Leave out water - Never feed hedgehogs milk as it can cause diarrhoea; instead simply add a shallow bowl of water in the shade (preferably near the hedgehog hole).

Leaving clean water in small dishes around the garden is good for lots of wildlife if they pass through, especially in very cold months where most water is frozen at night.

Check for hedgehogs before using lawn mowers or strimmers. Check compost heaps before raking them over.

Build bonfires close to the time of lighting, and check before you set them ablaze. Avoid the use of pesticides, as they can be poisonous to hedgehogs.

Doing some of these tasks won’t just enable these cute mammals to make full use of your garden, but it could save their lives. Hedgehogs play a vital part in our ecosystem, they are deeply rooted in our culture and they will help protect your flowers as they eat snails, slugs and other pests.

Strength to strength A Burnham-on-Sea residential care home for the elderly, The Towans, Berrow road, are going from strength to strength after 15 years of ownership.

Tom and Debra, a husband and wife team, took over The Towans in 2007 and have taken the business from strength to strength over the years. One of their top priorities along side providing exceptional care has been to enhance the home environment for their residents. This has included developing the communal areas including the garden lounge, TV lounge and replacing the small sun room with a substantial conservatory complete with air conditioning. The garden has had raised beds added for the residents to tend to flowers, fruit and vegetables. A large pergola has made the lawn a more usable space in the height of the summer, under it the tables and chairs make it a favourite spot for residents to enjoy a cream tea and summer entertainment. At the end of last summer a new heated visiting cabin was installed which adheres to covid safe visiting rules for friends and family to visit all year around.

Over the course of the last year with the global pandemic it has been a hard time for the care sector in general. Tom and Debra are incredibly proud of how the whole team have navigated this difficult time. The standard of care reminded outstanding throughout. The staff have been going above and beyond what is expected of them to keep residents safe and happy, including the team getting vaccinated as soon as it became available locally.

For the Tonkatsu sauce: 125g tomato ketchup 75ml sake or rice wine (dry sherry makes a good substitute).

2tbsp Worcester sauce 2 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 clove of garlic, finely grated 1tsp finely grated fresh root ginger 1 tsp Japanese mustard (Dijon makes a good substitute) 1tbsp mirin 1tbsp sugar Method: The Sauce Place all the sauce ingredients into a small saucepan and stir well. Heat until simmering and allow to simmer for about 5 minutes or until the garlic and ginger are soft and the sauce has a good pouring consistency. When its ready strain it through a fine sieve and allow to cool to room temperature.

The Pork You’ll need four plates. Pour the flour (seasoned with salt and pepper) on to the first; pour the beaten eggs on to the second and the breadcrumbs on to the third. NOTE - Panko breadcrumbs are crisper than normal breadcrumbs. The recipe will work with normal breadcrumbs, but you might prefer to use finely crushed cornflakes or crackers.

Coat each pork loin generously in the seasoned flour, then dip it into the beaten egg so its covered, then finally coat each loin steak in breadcrumbs.

Transfer them all to the fourth plate.

Pour enough oil into a frying pan to shallow fry the pork steaks and allow the pan to heat up over a moderate heat. When hot enough add the steaks and fry until golden on each side (4-5 minutes per side). Don’t overcrowd the pan as this will cause the steaks to steam and the breadcrumbs will become soggy.

Place the cooked steaks on a plate and cut into thick slices. Drizzle the Tonkatsu sauce over the steaks and serve with some shredded cabbage and Japanese pickles.

Community thanked for their kindness and support Mr and Mrs Thorne of East Huntspill wish to thank the community of East Huntspill and further afield for their kindness and generosity following a fire at their bungalow. Pamela and Tony were touched by the offers of support through food, money and donations after a chimney fire last autumn. Support was offered from as far afield as Devon and the couple have no idea how people heard about their troubles. The repairs are now almost complete but the couple wanted to express their gratitude to all involved from the community, Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue and the local charities who came to their aid.

Three Top Summer Kitchen Tips from Graeme Robertson, OvenGleamers 1. Tear basil rather than cutting it?

Chefs often say that you must tear basil, rather than cut it with a knife, to get the best flavour. Nope.

The flavours in basil are primarily contained within the cells of the leaf. If you tear it, it tends to come apart between the cells but if you cut the leaf, you will break open the cells releasing the flavour. This makes the most difference when you are using the basil raw eg in a tomato salad.

Best to wash the basil, pat dry with paper towels, and remove the leaves from the stem. Stack several leaves together and roll into a cylinder, then cut crossways into thin strips.

2. Should I use foil on the base of my Oven?

Many people line their grill pan or the bottom of the oven with aluminium foil to keep their cookers cleaner. This becomes heavily coated in grease and smells revolting! But it actually damages the enamel in the grill pan and on the base of the oven. The foil creates a super heating effect by reflecting the heat back onto the base of the oven or grill pan which then causes enamel damage.

I recommend using an oven liner made from PTFE with a non-stick coating. This will catch any food drips keeping the bottom of the oven/grill pan clean. Remember to take the oven liner out regularly and wash it in warm soapy water.

3 “Hot pan - cold oil - prevents sticking” Is this mantra really the best way to prevent food from sticking to the pan when sautéing or stir frying.

The idea is that you heat up the pan first then add the cold oil and almost immediately add the food and that will stop it sticking. What you really want is “hot pan, hot oil”. When you add cold oil, it heats up almost instantly when added to the hot pan – giving you “hot pan, hot oil”. You get the same results if you heat the oil along with the pan so take your pick – they both work!

Flower Show August 21st - West Huntspill Horticultural Society At a recent meeting the committee reluctantly decided not to hold the Annual Flower Show this year due to the on-going Covid situation. It was felt that with the uncertainty of the situation in August and the normal high volume of visitors to an indoor event it was not possible to ensure the safety of the public or helpers. The decision has been taken now to avoid exhibitors planning for the show only for the show to be possibly cancelled at the last minute if the Covid situation changes. Hopefully things will

Burnham Rotary Club learned of his plight and arranged for a suitable wheelchair to be specially adapted with extra-wide tyres to the main wheels and an extended similarly equipped ‘free wheel’ at the front. This takes the weight off the small front wheels which are too small to accept wide sand tyres.

The Invictus Active wheelchair with its extension is similar to those used by disabled athletes, and special axle clips for the large main wheels were manufactured by Brent Engineering, to both of whom the Rotary Club extends its thanks. Best of all, Bradley is delighted with his chair and has already tested it successfully on the beach.

The gift of a specially-adapted wheelchair by Burnham Rotary Club will enable a local 16-year-old lad suffering from cerebral palsy to achieve one of his greatest ambitions.

Bradley Bedford has long wanted to be able to enjoy going onto Burnham beach with his younger brothers, but his disability has forced him to remain in his wheelchair on the esplanade, because 22 | www.localreach.co.uk
