If you use one of the other trailheads, it will cut the mileage down to around 8 miles. You do share the trail for part of the time with Tinton Trail and also Little Spearfish trail. Once you get to the Little Spearfish trailhead, you will follow the signs for Ranger Draw to stay on the Rimrock trail.

Trail Etiquette Stay On The Trail
• Do not take shortcuts. • Stay to the right on wider paths. • Pass on the left. When passing someone, let them know you are approaching and will be passing on their left.
Read Trail Signs
There may be specific rules for the trail you are on.
When Nature Calls
The general rule is to move 200 feet from a trail, campsite, or body of water before digging a cat hole to deposit human waste.
Pack It In - Pack It Out
It doesn’t make sense that someone spending time in nature would purposely destroy it. Please clean up after yourself!
Muddy Trail Conditions
To avoid trail damage, it is best not to use the trail when muddy. If you are leaving tracks, turn back. If you come to a small muddy spot on the trail, it is best to walk through it so you don't damage the vegetation on the sides causing even more damage.
Report Vandalism
If there is contact information at the trailhead, tell the managing group of any destruction or problems you see.

BADGER CLARK
Hiking Needles Highway in winter is a truly unique way to experience Custer State Park. When the road is closed to vehicle traffic, typically from late fall through early spring depending on weather conditions, it transforms into an unforgettable on-foot adventure. A popular winter route starts near Sylvan Lake and leads to the iconic Needles Eye Tunnel, creating an out-and-back hike of about 2.7 miles. You can always continue farther to make the trek as long as you’d like. Walking the highway allows you to slow down, take your time, and fully soak in the dramatic granite spires, winding curves, and sweeping views that are usually seen through a windshield. The quiet, snow-dusted landscape makes the Needles feel even more impressive, and while the route is relatively gentle, winter conditions can include packed snow, ice, and wind, so traction, warm layers, and proper footwear are essential. Experiencing this iconic stretch of road on foot is a rare opportunity and one of the most memorable winter hikes in the Black Hills.
