To see the tower, call or text Jeff Miller at (605) 354-5333 Facebook.com/toweroftheblackhills/ ToweroftheBlackHills.com/

Discover the Tower of the Black Hills

Jeff Miller was By: Emily Tupa, Realtor retired and looking for RE/MAX Advantage peace and quiet. He’d Emily@CareBeyondClosing.com previously owned a home in the hills but wanted more elbow room. While on the hunt, he came across 160 acres of beautiful Black Hills land in Lawrence County. Miller viewed the property at 2 pm, and by 5pm the seller had agreed to his terms. It was gone before it even hit the market! The land soon lent inspiration. Miller describes himself as: “a crazy old man always looking for new ideas.” He reached out to a friend who previously built log homes and said, “It’s ’bought time for you to come out of retirement!” The two set out to build a structure inspired by a fire tower. Miller’s friend moved onsite to a camper and they began ordering supplies. Douglas Fir arrived and then 12-foot-deep concrete footings were poured. Just 69 days later, the tower was standing. A-1 DRILLING & BLASTING

The structure is 50 feet to the peak of the roof and there are 2 viewing decks (each can hold 30 people). The upper deck alone is 1,032 sq. feet and entirely glassed in. After two years, the building has seen plenty of weather including the recent December storm with 100+ mph winds. Miller boasted, she “took the wind like a beast.” They’re understandably proud of their construction and used only 2 additional contractors– Wires R Us for electrical and Tim’s Glass in Spearfish. Nearby they built a stone and log building with a kitchenette and bathroom. There is room to accommodate larger parties in a tent, making it an ideal venue at any height. Just days after opening a website, the tower had groups vying to plan tours or events. In the short time he’s managed the attraction, Miller has hosted: weddings, engagements, family reunions and corporate gatherings. He allowed one overnight visit for a South Dakota woman and her 3 daughters. They had recently lost their husband/father in an accident, and the children were having trouble sleeping. Miler gave them the tower for 3 days. They brought air mattresses and slept together under the stars, surrounded by the peace and quiet Miller had fallen in love in with. “It’s definitely not a money maker and I didn’t originally plan on that. A NEW PERSPECTIVE: Rock Climbing in the Black Hills

Rock climbing has been part of the Black Hills story for nearly a century. First introduced to North America in the early 1900s, the sport made its local debut in 1936 By: Brandon Emery, Owner when Fritz Wiessner ascended Sylvan Rocks Climbing the Totem Pole along the School & Guide Service SylvanRocks.com scenic Needles Highway. Not long after, Herb and Jan Conn explored and climbed hundreds of formations throughout the region, helping shape the climbing culture that still thrives today. Granite spires, sweeping views, and the chance to experience the landscape from an entirely different perspective all come together in one place. Rock climbing is often seen as an extreme sport, but it is more accessible than many people think. While it does carry inherent risks, those risks can be greatly reduced with proper instruction, equipment, and awareness. For beginners, learning from an experienced climber or a professional guide is the best way to start safely and build confidence. One of the biggest misconceptions about climbing is that it requires incredible upper body strength. In reality, climbing is much more about balance, technique, and using your legs. Use the Right Gear

A properly fitted harness, helmet, and climbing shoes are essential for both safety and comfort.

ridges and granite outcrops of the Black Hills lies an often-overlooked treasure for outdoor enthusiasts: a surprisingly rich network of paddling destinations. With more than 25 lakes and reservoirs scattered from the northern to southern Hills, this region offers remarkably accessible opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding—whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned paddler seeking a quiet escape. Much of this paddling landscape is defined by calm, flatwater environments. Ideal for families, beginners, and anyone seeking a relaxed way to experience the outdoors. Many of these waters are small, quaint lakes originally built during the Civilian Conservation Corps era, where stone dams and forested shorelines create intimate settings. Others are larger reservoirs that allow for longer outings. Together, they offer a balance of easy access and variety, making it simple to tailor a day on the water to your pace and experience. While popular spots like Pactola and Sylvan Lake impress with unique shorelines and granite spires, hidden gems abound. Cold Brook Reservoir near Hot Springs offers open water, red rock scenery, and solitude. Roubaix Lake in the northern Hills features a campground and sandy beach. Beyond recreation, paddling here fosters a deeper connection to the landscape. Gliding quietly across the water offers a unique vantage point to observe wildlife, from heron and osprey to deer and solar charging turtles along the shoreline. It also reinforces the importance of stewardship. These lakes are vital ecological and recreational resources and protecting them starts with simple practices: packing out trash, avoiding sensitive shoreline areas, and respecting wildlife and other users. Safety should always be part of the plan. Even on warm days, water temperatures can be cold enough to create dangerous conditions. Dress for the water, not the air, always wear a properly fitted lifejacket and a leash when paddleboarding. Be humble about your skill level, pay attention to changing weather conditions, and don’t underestimate the value of staying close to shore. While most opportunities in the Hills center on flatwater paddling, there are occasional chances for whitewater kayaking during spring snowmelt. Spring Renewal in the Black Hills: By: Brenda Biberdorf Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Vital Edge at Mt View Chiropractic MtViewChiro.com

Wellness, Nutrition, and Fresh Starts

As winter loosens its grip on the granite peaks and ponderosa pines of the Black Hills, spring brings longer days, fresh air, and the feeling of a fresh start. Melting snow feeds creeks, grasses begin to green, and many people naturally feel ready to get moving again.

It’s the perfect time to reset routines and refocus on wellness. Spending time outdoors, moving your body, and eating nourishing foods can boost energy, improve mood, and help shake off the slower pace of winter.

Fuel Your Body for the Season

As activity increases, nutrition becomes an important part of feeling your best. Spring is a great time to focus on lighter, nutrient-dense foods that support energy and recovery.

Focus on foods like:

• Lean proteins such as chicken, fish, grass-fed beef, or Greek yogurt • Complex carbohydrates like quinoa, brown rice, and sweet potatoes • Fresh fruits and vegetables including leafy greens, berries, and asparagus • Healthy fats from olive oil, nuts, and avocados Balanced meals and healthy snacks help maintain steady energy throughout busy days.

Most people are taught to believe that habits are the answer to everything. Build better habits, they’re told, and life will improve automatically. Wake up earlier. Eat cleaner. Train consistently. Stack enough habits together and eventually success will show up. By: Adam Hunsaker The Muscle Mechanic Black Hills Barbell BlackHillsBarbell.com

That advice sounds good, but it’s incomplete. Habits, by themselves, don’t solve problems. Solutions do.

A habit is repetitive behavior. A solution is a targeted response to a specific problem. And while effective solutions often include habits, they are never limited to them. This distinction matters… especially for people pursuing high performance, long-term success, or very measurable results.

Importantly, this isn’t an argument against habits. Habits are powerful tools. But tools without strategy are just motion. A hammer doesn’t build a house unless it’s used with intent.

Habit based thinking is generic. It assumes the problem is always a lack of consistency or discipline. But in reality, many problems are more complex than that. Two people can follow the same habits and get wildly different outcomes because their constraints, stressors, physiology, environment, and priorities are different.

In fitness, business, relationships, and health, the people who progress the furthest are not the ones with the prettiest routines. They are the ones who can accurately identify problems, apply the right pressure, reassess, and adjust. They treat habits as levers, not as virtues.

This is why habit based approaches so often stall with promptly diminished returns. Someone might build the habit of going to the gym five days a week and still not lose fat, still feel beat up, still underperform. The habit exists, but the problem remains unsolved. Why? Because the real issue may be poor recovery, incorrect training volume, unmanaged stress, nutrient deficiencies, sleep debt, or hormonal issues. No amount of blind habit repetition fixes a problem that hasn’t been properly diagnosed in the first place.

Solutions require precision.

A solution-based approach starts by asking better questions:

What is actually broken? What is limiting progress? What variable matters most right now? From there, habits are selected deliberately…not emotionally, not socially, not because they sound healthy, but because they directly address the problem(s) at hand. This is where solutions outperform habits. 605-342-3939 • 3712 Canyon Lake Dr. Rapid City Solutions scale with complexity. Simple problems require simple interventions. Complex problems demand surgical attention to detail. A solution based mindset adapts as conditions change, while habit based thinking often becomes rigid, clinging to routines even when they stop working. 56

HEALTH & WELLNESS

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Stop Chasing Chasing Habits. Start Solving Problems.

High level results come from intentional systems, not default behaviors.

Being solution based forces accountability. It removes excuses. It eliminates the comfort of saying, “At least I showed up,” and replaces it with a more demanding question: Did this actually work? That mindset is superior… not because it’s harder, but because it’s honest. Habits can be maintained, however…

Solutions are what transform. ( and to what degree or extent )

Habits are powerful tools. But tools without strategy are just motion. A hammer doesn’t build a house unless it’s used with intent.

And if you care about real outcomes, not just the appearance of effort, you need both. But you must always lead with the solution. With strength, The Muscle Mechanic

Why Creatine isn’t just for the gym

Because in a place like the Black Hills, the goal isn’t just working out, it’s staying strong and energized enough to enjoy the outdoors

Living in the Black Hills means we’re surrounded by opportunities to move. Whether you’re hiking a favorite trail, biking through the hills, hitting the gym, or simply keeping up with busy days outdoors, your body needs the right fuel to stay strong and energized. One supplement that’s gaining attention for both athletes and everyday active people is creatine. While many people associate creatine with bodybuilding, research shows it can benefit anyone looking for better strength, endurance, recovery, and even brain support.

for years to come.

Benefits for the Brain

Creatine doesn’t just support muscles, it may also support brain health. The brain uses a large amount of energy every day, and creatine helps supply energy to brain cells in a similar way it does for muscles. Emerging research suggests it may help with mental clarity, focus, and reducing mental fatigue. That can be helpful during busy workdays, long outdoor adventures, or simply keeping up with everyday life.

Faster Recovery

Another benefit many people notice is improved recovery. Creatine helps replenish energy stores in the muscles, which may reduce fatigue and help you feel ready to move again sooner after activity.

Easy to Use

Creatine is simple to add to your routine. The most common form is creatine monohydrate powder, which mixes easily into water, smoothies, or protein drinks. A typical serving is 3–5 grams per day, taken consistently. Timing isn’t critical, but many people prefer taking it after a workout or with a meal. Creatine works best when paired with: • good hydration • balanced nutrition • regular movement

What Creatine Does

Creatine is a naturally occurring compound found in our muscles that helps produce quick energy for movement. When you supplement with creatine, you’re simply helping your body replenish that energy system more efficiently. For people who love being active outdoors, that can mean: • More stamina on longer hikes • Stronger muscles for biking or climbing • Better recovery after a full day of activity

Supporting Strength and Muscle

One of creatine’s biggest benefits is helping support muscle strength and lean muscle maintenance. As we age, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important for metabolism, bone health, and overall mobility. Creatine helps muscles produce energy during short bursts of effort, whether you’re lifting weights or powering up a steep hill on your bike.

CONTRAST THERAPY 101 A Simple Approach to Recovery, Circulation, and Wellness

By: Travis Cookson, Owner & Tami Rosser, Owner Nutrishop Rapid City NutrishopRapidCity.com

Contrast therapy is gaining attention as a simple and effective way to support recovery and overall wellness. Once used primarily by athletes and physical therapists, it is now showing up in gyms, wellness centers, and even home setups. The concept is straightforward. Alternate between heat, such as a sauna or hot tub, and cold, like a cold plunge or cold shower. Repeating this cycle may help improve circulation, reduce muscle soreness, and promote mental clarity.

How It Works | Contrast therapy relies on how your body responds to temperature changes. Heat causes blood vessels to expand, increasing blood flow to muscles and tissues. Cold exposure has the opposite effect, causing vessels to constrict. Switching between the two creates a pumping effect in the body. This process may help move oxygen and nutrients into muscles while flushing out metabolic waste. Because of this, many people use contrast therapy after workouts or physically demanding days.

Why It’s Becoming Popular | There has been a noticeable shift toward recovery-focused wellness.

Instead of pushing harder all the time, more people are paying attention to how they recover. Contrast therapy fits into this trend because it is simple and accessible. It does not require complicated equipment or routines, yet it offers potential benefits supported by research on both heat and cold exposure.

How to Get Started | A simple routine is all you need to try contrast therapy. Start with 15 to 20 minutes in a hot environment, such as a sauna. Then move into cold water for two to three minutes. Repeat this cycle two to four times, finishing with cold exposure. If you are new, begin with shorter sessions and less extreme temperatures until your body adjusts.

By simply alternating between heat and cold, you can give your body a chance to reset after physical or mental stress. With consistent use and a balanced approach, it can become a valuable part of a healthy routine.

Your Mechanic

Wishes You Knew

Most people only think about their vehicle when something goes wrong. But talk to any mechanic and you will quickly learn that many major repairs could have been avoided with a little earlier attention. In the Black Hills, where road conditions can be tough on vehicles, these small things matter even more.

One

Two

That little vibration, faint squeak, or warning light might not seem urgent, but it is often your vehicle’s way of telling you something is starting to wear out. Catching issues early is almost always simpler and less expensive than waiting until something fails completely.

Putting off a minor repair might save money in the moment, but it can lead to much bigger problems. A worn brake pad, for example, is a relatively simple fix. If ignored, it can damage the rotors and significantly increase the cost of repair. The same goes for small leaks, worn belts, and minor alignment issues.

Don’t ignore small issues.

Regular inspections matter more than you think.

Even if your vehicle seems to be running fine, regular inspections can catch problems you cannot see or feel yet. Seasonal changes, especially in areas like the Black Hills, can affect everything from tires to suspension. A quick check by a professional can help prevent unexpected breakdowns and keep your vehicle running safely.

Four

Five

Strange sounds are one of the most common warning signs. Grinding, squealing, clunking, or knocking noises all point to something that needs attention. Ignoring them rarely makes them go away. In most cases, the problem only gets worse over time and leads to more costly repairs.

Hard braking, rough roads, and short trips all add up. Your driving habits play a major role in how quickly parts wear out. Smoother driving and being mindful of road conditions can go a long way in extending the life of your vehicle.

That noise will not fix itself.

These components are responsible for delivering fuel into the engine in a precise spray. When they become dirty or clogged, that precision is lost. The result is incomplete or inefficient combustion, which leads to reduced fuel economy. Keeping the fuel system clean helps restore proper function and allows the engine to perform at its best.

Does Regular Vehicle Maintenance Actually on Gas?

SAVE

Small Parts, Big Impact

Article Provided by: We all have routines that help keep things running smoothly—like vacuuming the house or staying on top of yard work. These small, consistent efforts don’t just Al’s D&I Auto Repair improve how things look; AlsDandi.com they also extend the life of what we own. The same idea applies to your vehicle, even if the benefits aren’t always immediately noticeable. While regular maintenance may not always change how your vehicle feels day to day, it can have a real impact over time—especially when it comes to fuel efficiency. Behind the scenes, a well-maintained vehicle runs more smoothly, uses fuel more effectively, and can ultimately save money at the gas pump.

Several smaller components also play a role in maintaining fuel efficiency. A worn or sticking PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve can affect how the engine manages unburned gases. Replacing it when needed helps maintain proper engine function. Similarly, worn spark plugs can misfire or fail to ignite fuel efficiently, while a dirty fuel filter can restrict fuel flow. Both issues can reduce performance and increase fuel consumption if left unaddressed.

Regular vehicle maintenance may seem like a routine expense, but it often pays off in the long run. By reducing friction, improving fuel combustion, and keeping key systems in good working order, a wellmaintained vehicle uses fuel more efficiently. The result? Fewer trips to the gas station, better performance, and a longer lifespan for your vehicle.

The Role of Friction in Fuel Efficiency

One of the biggest factors affecting fuel economy is friction. Simply put, the harder your engine has to work to move internal parts—or the vehicle itself—the more fuel it uses. Engine oil plays a major role in reducing friction. When oil levels are low or the oil becomes dirty, it loses its ability to properly lubricate engine components. This forces the engine to work harder, increasing fuel consumption. Staying consistent with oil changes helps ensure everything runs smoothly and efficiently. Transmission fluid works in a similar way. Keeping it clean and at the proper level helps reduce internal resistance, allowing the vehicle to operate more efficiently. Tire pressure is another simple but important factor. Under-inflated tires create more resistance against the road, which means the engine has to use more energy—and more fuel—to keep the vehicle moving. Checking tire pressure monthly and keeping tires properly inflated is an easy way to improve gas mileage. Alignment and brake issues can also contribute to unnecessary drag. When wheels are out of alignment or brakes aren’t functioning properly, the vehicle may not roll as freely, increasing wear and reducing efficiency.

The second major factor in fuel economy is how efficiently fuel is burned inside the engine. For optimal performance, the engine needs the right amount of clean fuel delivered at the correct time, pressure, and pattern. Over time, deposits can build up in the fuel system, particularly in the fuel injectors.

The Bottom Line

Designing Outdoor Spaces That Bring Families Together Living in the Black Hills, we all know winter looks different from year to year. Some seasons bring months of snow piled along driveways and fences. Other years, like this past winter, we get stretches where it barely feels like winter at all. Regardless of what the season brings, there is always a shift when spring arrives. The air softens, the days grow longer, and families across the Black Hills step back outside. Each spring, homeowners start looking at their backyards with fresh perspective. A larger patio, a fire pit for cool evenings, or a better space for grilling and gathering often rise to the top of the list. The goal usually goes beyond appearance. It is about creating a space that feels comfortable, functional, and easy to enjoy with family and friends. Start With How You Use the Space Before choosing materials or layouts, it helps to think about how the space will actually be used. Outdoor living in the Black Hills often centers around connection. Spring evenings around a fire, summer cookouts with neighbors, and kids moving between the yard and patio all influence how a space should be designed. When the purpose is clear from the beginning, it becomes much easier 20+ YEARS EXPERIENCE IN THE BLACK HILLS to create a layout that feels natural instead of forced. Create Defined Areas That Work Together A patio should feel like an extension of the home, not a surface placed in the yard. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by designing in zones. Separate areas for gathering, cooking, and relaxing help the space feel organized while still working together as one environment. Even subtle changes in layout or direction can help define these areas without making the space feel divided. Plan for Slope Early In the Black Hills, slope is often one of the biggest design challenges. Many properties are not flat, and trying to force a patio into uneven

Keep Cooking Areas Functional Outdoor cooking spaces continue to grow in popularity, but placement matters. A grill or outdoor kitchen should be close enough to the home for convenience while still allowing for good airflow and movement. Keeping the cooking area slightly offset from main seating zones helps reduce congestion while still keeping everyone connected. Focus on Flow and Movement One of the most overlooked elements in patio design is how people move through the space. Without clear pathways, foot traffic tends to cut through seating areas or wear paths into the lawn. Retaining Walls Landscaping Install & Maintenance

Proper base preparation and drainage are essential to long term performance. A patio should not only look good when it is finished, but continue to hold up over time without settling or movement.

A well-designed patio is not just about pavers and stone. It is about creating a place where life happens. As the Black Hills move into another spring, it is the perfect time to invest in an outdoor space that brings your family together for years to come. 69

technology, making them a great choice for families with kids and for pet owners who want a cleaner, more hygienic outdoor space. Pet areas, in particular, benefit from turf ’s easy cleanup and mud-free surface. Another common concern is heat, especially during summer months. While cheaper turf products can get uncomfortably hot, high-end artificial turf is engineered to stay cooler, making it much more enjoyable for everyday use. And thanks to advances in design and materials, today’s top-tier turf looks incredibly natural, often indistinguishable from real grass.

For many homeowners and businesses in the Black Hills, maintaining a lush green lawn can feel like a never-ending battle. Between dry spells, watering restrictions, mowing, weeds, and rising maintenance costs, traditional grass isn’t always the easy option it’s meant to be. That’s why artificial turf has quickly become a popular alternative for landscapes of all kinds, from residential yards to commercial spaces and pet areas. One of the biggest advantages of artificial turf is the low maintenance lifestyle it offers. There’s no mowing, no watering, no fertilizing, and no chemical treatments. Once installed, your lawn stays green year-round with minimal upkeep, saving both time and money. For people who want a beautiful yard without the constant work, this alone is often reason enough to make the switch. Beyond the obvious benefits, artificial turf offers some less well-known advantages that make it especially appealing in our region. High-quality turf is designed to eliminate erosion, making it ideal for sloped yards or high-traffic areas where natural grass struggles to survive. It’s also built to be extremely durable and can last for decades, even in harsh weather conditions.

Artificial turf also opens up new possibilities in landscape design. Why More Black Hills Homeowners Are Choosing

The Ultimate Black Hills Home Exterior

Living in the Black Hills means your home has to handle a lot, including hail, high winds, wildfire risk, and constant exposure to the elements. These conditions can take a toll on standard building materials, which is why it’s important to choose an exterior that’s built to last, not just look good.

The Roof

The Siding

A strong exterior system starts with the roof. In this area, impact resistance and durability matter. Options like F-Wave XTM shingles or 24-gauge standing seam metal are designed to stand up to severe weather. Both offer excellent protection against hail and fire. Metal provides unmatched longevity and wind resistance, while F-Wave offers a more traditional shingle look with strong performance against impact and wear.

Siding is another key factor. Fiber cement products like James Hardie are a great fit for the Black Hills because they are built to withstand tough conditions. Unlike wood, they will not rot or attract pests. Unlike vinyl, they do not crack or dent easily in hail. They also hold paint well and require less maintenance over time. When paired with durable fascia and soffit, fiber cement siding creates a cohesive exterior that can handle both the elements and everyday wear.

Why the Black Hills Demands More By: Jake Hofer, Owner Built Right Roofing & Construction BuiltRightRoofs.com

HAIL

Hail alley storms produce baseball-sized stones that total roofs in a single afternoon.

The Windows Windows often get overlooked, but they play a big role in protecting your home. Fiberglass windows, such as Pella Impervia, are designed to handle extreme temperature swings without expanding and contracting like vinyl. This helps maintain a tight seal, reducing drafts and the risk of leaks. They are also stronger and more impact resistant, which is important during storms.

From Cozy to Colorful

Your entryway is the first thing people see, so it is worth a quick update. Swap out darker rugs for something lighter and more durable. Add a simple bench or basket for shoes and sandals. A seasonal wreath or a bit of greenery on the door can make the space feel welcoming right away. It is a small change, but it sets the tone for the rest of your home.

Simple ways to transition your home from winter and spring into summer

YOUR DREAM HOME AWAITS

Update Your Outdoor Spaces

As the Black Hills moves into warmer, sun-filled days, it is a great time to freshen up your home. Shifting from winter and early spring into summer does not mean starting from scratch. It is really about lightening things up, adding color, and bringing a little bit of the outdoors inside. A few simple changes can make your space feel brighter and more inviting.

Lighten Up Your Interior

Start by trading out heavier winter pieces for lighter fabrics. Think airy curtains instead of thick drapes, lightweight throws instead of heavy blankets, and breathable cotton or linen pillows. Even a few small swaps can make a room feel more open. Color also makes a big difference this time of year. Summer is a great excuse to bring in soft blues, fresh greens, warm yellows, or even a pop of coral. You do not need to repaint. Just switch in seasonal touches like pillows, table runners, or artwork that reflects a brighter feel.

Bring the Outdoors In

One of the easiest ways to create a summer feel is by adding natural elements. Fresh flowers on the table, small potted plants on shelves, or even a bowl of seasonal fruit can bring life into a room. Wildflowers, when you can find them, are a great local touch and give a relaxed, natural look. If you want something low maintenance, faux greenery works well too. It still gives you that fresh feel without any upkeep. inate Lam nyl r y Vi Luxu

Add Simple Seasonal Touches

Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference. Swap out candles for lighter scents like citrus or floral. Use glass jars or simple vases to display flowers or greenery. Even updating your table setting with something a little brighter can help bring in that summer feel. Getting your home ready for summer does not have to be complicated or expensive. Focus on lighter textures, natural elements, and a bit of color. It will make your space feel fresh, comfortable, and ready for the season ahead.

Refresh Your Entryway

Easy plants and flowers to brighten your outdoor space

After a long Black Hills winter, spring is the perfect time to bring life and color back to your outdoor space. The good news is you don’t need a green thumb—or a lot of time—to make a big impact. A few wellchosen plants can instantly transform your yard, patio, or entryway. If you’re looking for simple, low-maintenance options, here are some great choices to get you started.

Petunias

Petunias are a go-to for a reason. They’re affordable, easy to grow, and come in a wide range of colors. Whether you plant them in hanging baskets, pots, or flower beds, they bloom all season long with minimal care. Just give them plenty of sunlight and regular watering.

Geraniums

Geraniums are another hardy favorite that thrive in the Black Hills climate. Their bold red, pink, and white blooms add instant color to patios and porches. They’re especially great in containers and don’t require constant attention.

Marigolds

If you want something nearly foolproof, marigolds are it. These bright yellow and orange flowers are tough, drought-tolerant, and even help deter some garden pests. They’re perfect for borders, garden beds, or mixed containers.

Hostas

Looking to brighten up a shaded area? Hostas are a great choice. While they’re known more for their lush green (and sometimes variegated) leaves than flowers, they add texture and fullness where other plants struggle to grow.

Pansies

Pansies are one of the first flowers you can plant in the spring. They handle cooler temperatures well and add cheerful color early in the season. Great for planters near entryways where you’ll see them every day.

Lavender

Lavender not only adds soft purple color, but it also brings a relaxing fragrance to your outdoor space. It’s drought-tolerant once established and works well in sunny areas.

Mix and match containers

If you’re short on space—or just want flexibility—container gardening is a great option. Combine a few of these plants in pots or hanging baskets to create layers of color and texture. It’s an easy way to update your space without committing to a full garden.

Keep it simple

The key to success is starting small. Choose a few plants that fit your space and sunlight conditions, and build from there. Even a couple of pots by your front door or a small flower bed can make your home feel more welcoming. Adding color to your outdoor space doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few easy-care plants and a little time, you can create a space that feels fresh, inviting, and ready to enjoy all season long. STRONG ROOFS STRONGER REPUTATION

Grow Smarter in the Black Hills: Companion Planting Made Simple

Gardening in the Black Hills comes with its own challenges. Shorter growing seasons, cooler nights, and unpredictable weather mean you have to be a little more intentional with what you plant and when. That is where companion planting can really help. Companion planting is simply growing certain plants together so they support each other. Some help repel pests, others improve the soil, and some even help nearby plants grow stronger. Tomatoes and basil are a great example. Planting them together may help reduce pests and is often said to improve flavor. Marigolds are another must-have in local gardens. Plant them throughout your beds to help keep unwanted insects away. Timing matters just as much as pairing. In the Black Hills, most gardeners wait until after the last frost, usually late May to early June, before planting warm-season crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Cool-season crops like lettuce, carrots, and onions can go in earlier, often late April to early May, depending on the weather. A classic combination to try is corn, beans, and squash. Corn provides support, beans add nutrients to the soil, and squash helps hold in moisture. This works especially well once the soil has warmed in early summer. Even in a small garden or raised bed, these simple strategies can make a big difference. With the right pairings and timing, you can grow a healthier, more productive garden right here in the Black Hills. Locally Family Owned Since 1932

Black Hills Companion Planting & Timing Guide

PAINT GUIDE By: Cara Parsons Lamb Painting LambPainting.com

I’ve been in the painting services industry in the Black Hills long enough to know one thing for sure: you don’t need a massive budget to make your house look like a million bucks. A few smart paint choices applied in the right places can completely transform your home’s curb appeal. The good news is you don’t have to start with the whole house. If your budget is tight, focus on the areas people notice first. Your front door, trim, and shutters (if you have them) carry more visual significance than your siding. A fresh coat of paint on the front door alone can make your home feel updated overnight. Bold but classic colors like deep red, navy blue, or even a rich charcoal stand out beautifully against our natural South Dakota landscapes. Next up is trim. Faded, peeling trim is one of the fastest ways to make a home look older than it is. Repainting trim in a crisp white or a contrast color sharpens the entire look of your house. It’s a relatively small surface area, which keeps material costs down, but the impact is huge. Clean lines around windows and roof edges create that “well-maintained” impression buyers and neighbors notice immediately. Now let’s talk siding. If a full repaint isn’t in the budget, consider spot improvements. South Dakota weather including sun, snow, wind, hail, and extreme fluctuating temperatures tends to wear down the most exposed sides of a home first. Touching up or repainting just the front-facing portion can dramatically boost curb appeal without the cost of doing all four sides at once. Color choice matters more than people think. In the Black Hills area, earth tones and muted colors tend

to age better than bright, trendy shades. Think warm grays, soft greens, and sandy beiges. These colors complement the natural surroundings and hold up well under intense sunlight. Plus, they’re more forgiving when dust and dirt inevitably show up. Another budget-friendly trick is to use paint to highlight architectural features. Got a porch? Railings? Decorative trim? Accenting these areas with a contrasting or complimentary color to the main color adds depth and character. It’s a small detail that makes your home look more custom and intentional. Don’t forget about prep work. I know it’s not the fun part, but in my experience, good prep is what separates a quick fix from a lasting upgrade. Cleaning surfaces, scraping loose paint, and priming properly will make even an inexpensive paint job look professional and last longer, saving you money in the long run. Finally, invest in quality where it counts. You don’t need the most expensive paint on the shelf, but don’t go for the cheapest either, especially for exterior surfaces. A mid-grade, weatherresistant paint will stand up much better to South Dakota’s temperature swings, meaning you won’t be repainting again in a year or two. Most paint manufacturers offer “good, better or best” options. Many times, the “better” option is still affordable but also offers the warranty and durability you are looking for. At the end of the day, improving curb appeal isn’t about spending big, it’s about being strategic. With a little planning and the right paint choices, you can give your home a fresh, inviting look that stands out on any block, without stretching your BEFORE budget.

And What It Means for Black Hills Gardeners As gardeners across western South Dakota gear up for the growing season, the updated USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is providing valuable insight to help guide planting decisions. Built using 30 years of climate data from 1991–2020, the map identifies average annual extreme minimum temperatures, giving gardeners a clearer idea of which plants are most likely to survive winter conditions in their area. South Dakota spans zones 4a through 5b, reflecting the state’s diverse By: Tim Sime geography and climate. In Rapid City, gardeners fall within Zone 5b, where Jolly Lane Greenhouse winter temperatures typically dip JollyLane.com between –15°F and –10°F. Zones vary widely across the state due to elevation differences, river valleys, prairie exposure, and Black Hills foothill effects. These regional variations make it especially important to check your local zone before selecting long‑lived plants like shrubs, trees, and perennials. Still, specialists from SDSU Extension caution that zone classifications are only part of the picture. Local conditions like wind, snow cover, soil type, elevation, and neighborhood topography as well as soil moisture still play a major role in plant success, and gardeners should use the map as one tool among many. This year, an unusually dry winter has added another layer of complexity for gardeners. Because the Hardiness Zone Map focuses only on cold temperatures, it does not account for precipitation levels or soil moisture. As a result, many gardens may begin the season with drier-than-normal soil, which can impact early plant growth and overall resilience.

Top Tips to Keep Your Plants Hydrated During Dry Spells

HOME & GARDEN

HOME & GARDEN

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

• Water Deeply and Infrequently Instead of light, frequent watering, aim for slow, deep soakings that reach the root zone. This encourages plants to build deeper, more resilient roots. • Mulch Generously Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around trees, shrubs, and perennials to reduce evaporation and moderate soil temperatures. Wood chips, shredded bark, or even clean straw can help lock in moisture. • Check Soil Moisture Regularly Dry winters can leave the soil unusually depleted. Before spring planting, use a trowel or soil probe to check for moisture 4–6 inches below the surface. • Water Evergreens Early Evergreen trees and shrubs lose moisture even in winter. If the soil thaws and conditions are mild, providing a deep watering can prevent early‑season stress. • Prioritize New Plantings Freshly planted shrubs, perennials, and trees need consistent moisture until established. Their soil should remain evenly moist but not waterlogged through the first growing season. • Group Plants by Water Needs Design garden beds so drought‑tolerant plants are together and moisture‑loving plants share the same space. This makes irrigation more efficient during dry periods. • Use Drip Irrigation Where Possible Drip hoses or soaker lines deliver slow, targeted moisture with minimal waste which is ideal for our region’s frequent dry spells.

Whether you’re selecting hardy perennials, choosing shrubs, or planning a vegetable garden, the updated Hardiness Zone Map combined with smart watering practices can help you build a resilient landscape that will thrive through the season.
