Black Hills ATV & UTV Rules & Regulations

Before hitting the trails, it’s important to know the ATV and UTV laws in the Black Hills. Registration & Permits South Dakota residents must have an OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) sticker for their ATV/UTV. Non-residents must purchase a temporary permit to ride in South Dakota. All Black Hills motorized trails require a Black Hills National Forest Motorized Trail Permit ($20 per 7-day pass, $25 per annual pass). Where to Buy Permits? • South Dakota OHV Permits: Available at local ATV rental shops or online at https://gfp.sd.gov/. • Black Hills National Forest Trail Permits: Purchase at Forest Service offices or online.

ATV/UTV Riding Laws

Speed Limits – Obey posted speed limits and ride responsibly. Road Riding – ATVs/UTVs can only be ridden on designated trails and certain public roads. Many Black Hills roads are open to UTVs, but check local signage. Helmet Laws – Riders under 18 years old must wear a helmet. Helmets are recommended for all riders. Lights Required – ATVs/UTVs must have working headlights and taillights when operated on public roads. No Drinking & Driving – South Dakota DUI laws apply to ATVs & UTVs.

Where to Rent an ATV or UTV in the Black Hills

Don’t own an ATV or UTV? No problem! Several rental companies throughout the Black Hills offer daily and multi-day rentals. Many shops also sell permits and provide maps to help you navigate the trails. Check the Index at the back of this guide for a list of rental companies!

Fun Facts About Spearfish Creek • Flows North – Unlike most creeks, which flow south, Spearfish Creek flows north, a rare geological phenomenon caused by the uplift of the Black Hills. • Ice-Free in Winter – Despite freezing temperatures, many parts of the creek remain ice-free due to the constant flow and underground spring sources. When it does get cold enough to freeze, it may freeze from the bottom up, a rare phenomenon known as “anchor ice” formation. • One of the Fastest-Flowing Creeks in the U.S. – Spearfish Creek moves quickly due to its steep drop in elevation as it travels through Spearfish Canyon. • Disappearing Water – In some areas, especially near Savoy in Spearfish Canyon, the creek’s water disappears underground into the porous limestone and resurfaces miles downstream.

NORTHERN HILLS

• Popular for Fly Fishing – Spearfish Creek is a year-round trout fishery, home to brown and rainbow trout, making it a favorite for fly fishermen. • Cold Water Even in Summer – Fed by underground springs, Spearfish Creek stays cool year-round, which is great for trout but makes it chilly for swimming even in the summer.

Fun Facts About Sturgis Originally Named “Scooptown” – Before becoming Sturgis, the town was called Scooptown because local residents “scooped” money from the many soldiers stationed at nearby Fort Meade. Fort Meade’s Role in the National Anthem – Fort Meade, just outside Sturgis, is credited with introducing the tradition of playing ”The Star-Spangled Banner” at military events long before it became the national anthem in 1931.

NORTHERN HILLS

Veterans Honor Town – Sturgis has a strong military history and is home to several veterans’ memorials, including the Black Hills National Cemetery, a final resting place for many service members.

(See Our Ad Page 16)

Custer is the oldest town in the Black Hills, founded in 1875 after gold was discovered in French Creek during Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s 1874 Black Hills Expedition. This discovery led to a rush of prospectors. However, as richer gold deposits were found in Deadwood and Lead, many miners moved on, causing Custer’s population to decline. Rather than fading into history, Custer thrived by shifting its economy to ranching, logging, and tourism. The establishment of Custer State Park in 1912 helped cement the town as a major tourist destination, drawing visitors to see the park’s bison herds, scenic drives, and granite peaks. Today, Custer serves as a hub for outdoor adventure, with easy access to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Jewel Cave, and Wind Cave National Park.
