Continuous Fever Causes: Why Fever Doesn’t

Go Away

A fever that lingers beyond a few days is not something to ignore. While short-term fever is often the body’s natural response to infection, a fever that doesn’t go away for days may signal an underlying condition that requires medical evaluation.

Why do I have fever every day?

Daily or recurring fever often points toward an ongoing infection, inflammatory condition, or, less commonly, a chronic disease. In tropical regions like India, infections remain the most frequent cause. The body continues to produce fever as the immune system actively fights pathogens that have not yet been eliminated.

Causes of continuous fever in adults

Among the most important long lasting fever causes are infectious diseases such as: Typhoid Fever: Caused by Salmonella typhi, this infection leads to a gradually rising fever, often accompanied by abdominal pain, weakness, and loss of appetite. Without proper antibiotics, fever can persist for weeks.

Dengue Fever: A viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes, dengue typically presents with high fever, severe body aches, and sometimes a drop in platelet count. While classic dengue fever lasts about a week, complications or secondary infections may prolong symptoms.

Malaria: Caused by Plasmodium parasites, malaria can produce cyclical or continuous fever depending on the species. Plasmodium falciparum, in particular, may cause persistent high fever and requires urgent treatment.

Other causes include urinary tract infections, tuberculosis, autoimmune disorders, and certain cancers, though infections remain the most common.

Persistent fever causes and treatment

The treatment of persistent fever depends entirely on identifying the root issue. Blood tests, imaging, and cultures are often needed.

Typhoid requires targeted antibiotics.

Dengue is managed supportively with hydration and monitoring platelet levels.

Malaria is treated with antimalarial medications specific to the parasite type.

Ignoring a fever that doesn’t go away for days can lead to complications such as dehydration, organ involvement, or severe infection.

When to seek medical attention

If you experience fever lasting more than 3–5 days, worsening symptoms, or signs like persistent vomiting, confusion, or severe weakness, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Early diagnosis is key to preventing complications and ensuring effective recovery.
