We Shall Remember Them!

In the earlier editions, I described a visit I had recently made to the war graves and museums of France and Belgium, and applauded the marvellous work being undertaken by both the people of those countries and the International War Graves Commission to create a lasting and fitting tribute to the men and women who had lost their lives in the search for peace and freedom. Prior to my visit places like the Somme, Ypres, Mons and Passchendaele were distant – if sad – references to the conflict that took place between 1914 and 1918 and despite the huge numbers that had lost their lives I, along with many others, felt that such atrocities belonged in the past. That trip proved to me, however, that they don’t and that the sacrifices made should never be forgotten. In October I was lucky enough to once again visit some of the main areas of conflict in France and Belgium and was once again both impressed and humbled by the way the dead are both remembered and revered in those countries.

On that day the whole nation offers tributes in many, many small ceremonies at churches, town halls and cenotaphs across the land, but the main focus of the day is on the cenotaph in Whitehall where the Queen lays a wreath in dedication to all who have suffered or died in war. It is one of the few occasions when all political factions are united and when Party Leaders, Ministers, MPs, representatives of the armed forces and many other dignitaries join as one to offer their united acclaim to the people to whom we owe so much.

In Ypres in Belgium that acclaim happens every single night in ‘The Last Post Ceremony.’ It originally began on 1st July 1928, a year after the inauguration of the Menin Gate Memorial, and apart from the years of German occupation has taken place every single night since.

At exactly 8pm up to six members of the regular buglers from the local volunteer Fire Brigade step into the roadway under the memorial arch to play Last Post, followed by a short silence and they then In Britain, of course, we also remember play Reveille. The History of the 'Apron'

Having lived through the much of the twentieth century I feel we ‘oldies’ have a huge advantage over our kids because they don't know what an apron, or, as my gran used to call it a pinny, (a word derived from its official name of pinafore dress) actually is.

The real truth is that the principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because in those days money was tight and most women only had two or three dresses. It was also easier to both wash and replace aprons because they used less material. But my recollection of that wonderful garment goes much further and my fondest memories of both my grandmothers has helped me produce the following list of uses to which this remarkable garment could be put. How many of you remember that: It served as a pot holder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears!

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold Grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot stove.

Sticks and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables, and after shelling peas or peeling potatoes, it carried out the pods and skins to the bin.

In Autumn, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees and vegetables freshly pulled from the soil.

When unexpected company drove down the street, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

It was the wonderful garment that my two grandmothers always wore and remains a stark reminder of the difference between now and then. For instance, Gran used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool, but now her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. She washed it regularly, of course, but never considered it anything other than a useful piece of attire. These days, people would go crazy trying to figure out how many germs were on it. And that’s a shame, because the only thing I ever caught from that apron was love...

400 Years Of Celebrating Failure However strange it may sound it’s true that for the last 400 years we have – as a nation – been holding an annual celebration of absolute failure every November 5th. We are, of course, speaking about the ‘Gunpowder Plot’ where a group of 17th century terrorists placed explosives under the House of Lords in an attempt to kill the then king James 1st. While there were several members involved, it was Guy Fawkes who had been left to single handedly guard the explosives and he was inevitably caught, arrested and put to death in a pretty grotesque manner. It is therefore his name that has since become synonymous with November 5th.

Celebrating the fact that their king had survived an attempt on his life, the people of London lit bonfires around the City, and months later the introduction of the ‘Observance of 5th November Act’ enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure that has continued to this day. Soon, people began placing effigies onto bonfires, and fireworks were added to the celebrations. It also became something of a religious protest, with effigies of both Guy Fawkes, and sometimes the Pope, gracing the bonfires.

Amazingly, ‘Bonfire Night’ is not only celebrated in Britain. The tradition crossed the oceans and established itself in the British colonies during the centuries. It was actively celebrated in New England as "Pope Day" as late as the 18th century. Today, November 5th bonfires still light up in far off places like New Zealand and Newfoundland in Canada.

The biggest problem it ever caused us when we were kids was keeping the bonfire intact until the actual night. I seem to remember my friends and I doing an extraordinary amount of work collecting burnable rubbish from friends and neighbours. And while the end result was always a huge bonfire it was also a target for rival groups from a few streets away who always viewed an unguarded bonfire as something that needed to be lit immediately. We therefore had to stand guard for nights on end to prevent premature ignition. It was all worth it in the end, of course, because regardless of the history of the thing and the complete disregard of the obvious dangers that lurked around a blaze so big, there was always the end product when the bonfire burned down to hot embers and we were able to place our raw potatoes amongst them to create a feast of unrivalled excellence. It’s hard to see how those wonderful experiences could be repeated these days with the ludicrous extent to which health and safety measures have infiltrated our lives but I still think that taking part in such wonderful events was the best life education we ever got.

Have to go now, though. The chap down the road has been pruning his trees and there are huge amounts of wood lying about. See you on the fifth!

We Have Another Real Contender After last year’s third place for Middlesbrough’s Amelia Lily – a defeat that was nevertheless followed up by huge success with her debut single ‘You bring me joy’ peaking at number 2 in the British charts – we now have another real contender in this year’s ‘X Factor.’

23 year old James Arthur decided to audition for this year’s show at the last minute after his friend told him he had nothing to lose. James lives in Saltburn, and has been performing his own songs in local venues for the last few years.

Following a successful audition he sailed into the Live Shows after great Boot Camp performances of Take That’s ‘A Million Love Songs’ and Bonnie Rait’s ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me.’ Perhaps his best performance so far, however, was the one that not only took him through to the next round but also made him suffer a panic attack after his performance. He had no need to worry though, because his version of Mary J Blige’s ‘No more drama’ was absolutely superb and the star herself telephoned him to wish him luck.

After asking her how he could best do the song justice she replied “Sing the song like you want something to change in your life, like you really, really wanna change something and that’s it. Nicole was raving about you – you must be amazing. I don’t wanna wish you luck, just go get it.”

Ironically, the title of the song was exactly what the medics who treated him after his attack advised - ‘no more drama and just take it easy! How he can manage to do that while rooming during The X Factor's Live Shows with the weird and very gay Rylan Clark is beyond us, though James admits that Rylan keeps clearing up after him because he is extremely untidy. Yeah, well he would, wouldn’t he! We don’t need to worry about James, though, because one of the secrets to emerge from several of his interviews is that he has a passion for Women’s beach volleyball. So, really, he’s an ordinary bloke just like the rest of us!

So once again we have a chance to put Saltburn on the map and it’s to be hoped that by the time you read this (deadlines mean we have to write stuff in advance) he’ll still be a contender. We think he could go all the way. Get voting!!

Prepare your ground well, digging in lots of organic matter such as compost or Manure before you plant  Harden off autumn-sown sweet peas by keeping the cold frame open as much as possible during slight frosts. If the temperature drops below – 2 C (28 F) close the frame and covers it. Watch out for aphids on the young plants

 Pot on cuttings of tender perennials that were taken in September. Use Multi-Purpose Compost or John Innes No. 2 if you prefer.  Keep the greenhouse well-ventilated to keep diseases at bay

 For a splash of colour plant a container with some of the colourful ornamental cabbages now available or winter-flowering heathers. The heathers, varieties of Erica carnea prefer an ericaceous compost  If you have cordylines or other tender shrubs in pots protect them from winter frosts. Remember that some terracotta pots are not frost-resistant and should be stored through the winter

The Panda 4X4 A Great Buy For Both On And Off Road.

With winter fast approaching and the North East’s notoriously icy roads almost upon us we thought we’d take a look at a comparatively inexpensive 4x4 that can help get through it all safely. It’s a long time since Fiat developed a four-wheeldrive system into their Panda range and the recently launched third generation of this popular car that is still the only city car with off-road capabilities. Now available with Fiat’s exceptional 84bhp TwinAir turbo two-cylinder petrol engine the new version also includes a more substantial - even rugged - body kit that genuinely enhances the Panda’s looks, while the chunkier front bumper, plastic side sills and 15-inch alloys also add to its great looks.

Larger and more spacious than its predecessor, the latest Panda features more rounded styling and is designed to be the most practical and versatile version yet. Two engines – one petrol and one diesel and both featuring start/stop technology - are available. The petrol unit is an 84bhp 0.9-litre TwinAir Turbo and has a six-speed manual gearbox.

For those considering longer trips a diesel 74bhp 1.3 MultiJet II is probably a better bet and that comes with a fivespeed manual gearbox. Both provide excellent economy.

The interior is stylish and reasonably well made and although rear passengers don’t get an enormous amount of legroom, unique additions like the folding front seat do make up for it.

The 225 litres of boot space also offers sizeable storage capacity for a relatively small car. Standard features on the 4x4 include climate control, CD/MP3 radio, 15-inch alloys, electric door mirrors, central locking with remote control and rear headrests. Furthermore, the optional equipment and accessories include Fiat’s City Brake Control system that stops the car if it thinks a low-speed crash is imminent, a sliding rear seat and TomTom live sat-nav. The Panda is also great fun to drive around town and if you opt for one of the twin-cylinder Twin Air models, owners are exempt from paying Road Tax. Off-road, the performance is boosted by uprated suspension that’s 47mm higher than the standard car, enhancing the already more than adequate visibility.

There’s also a steel sheet underneath to protect from off-road lumps and bumps, and the engine’s air intake has been raised so you don’t drown it if having to splash through deep water.

The Panda’s real strong point, however, is the comfortable ride provided by the extra suspension as it glides over potholes and absorbs many of the bumps so prevalent on modern roads. There’s also very little that would stop the Panda off-road because a high percentage of its power is fed to the front wheels most of the time. When the electro-hydraulic coupling sends power to the back wheels on hard corners or wet roads, however, it is not particularly noticeable.

In all, then, the new Panda 4x4 is a worthy top of the range addition to Fiat’s city car range with the Twin Air engine giving an enjoyable driving experience that differs in many ways from the normal super-mini ride. As a mainly town based car, of course, the four-wheel-drive system isn’t necessarily a vital ingredient so the 4x2 Panda Trekking, which has the same features but is front-wheel drive only, could be a better option. The 4x4 version, however, is still a great buy and compares more than favorably with many of its more expensive and larger rivals.

Performance wise, the steering, pedals and gearshift are all extremely light but the chunky steering wheel and gear knob have a nice solidity to them. The Twin Air engine is a little noisy but nevertheless performs well for its size. The low first gear ratio designed to provide more control when off-roading gives good early acceleration, but although it can keep up with other traffic to the motorway limit it isn’t totally silent at 70 plus and certainly wouldn’t win any races!
