The Ghost of the Unfortunate Airman

With Halloween just around the corner, we though we would share a commonly known ghost story which was sent to us by one of our readers.

The story takes place at St George's Hotel near Teesside Airport, Middleton St George.

The hotel, a brown brick regimental structure, was originally the RAF Officer’s mess during World War Two and remained as a pilot training base until the early sixties when it was transformed into the stylish and atmospheric St George Hotel.

In November 1954 an RAF pilot named Raymond Norman lost control of the Meteor Jet he was training in and crashed close to the hotel. Unfortantly Raymond was kiled. Bizarrely, when the jet shot across the car park at the front of the hotel, only one of the thirty cars parked there was damaged, it was Raymond’s own car.

Does this bizarre tragedy hold the key to the haunting of the St George's Hotel? Various night stopping Air-crews have reported Spooky goings on (of the supernatural kind) while staying at the hotel, including seeing figures, hearing people in the room and even the sound of an airmans radio from that tragic day.

There is also unconfirmed reports of similar activity within the only flying school hanger 3 situated on the same site as the training base hanger.

Gosh, I Didn’t Know It Did That!

It’s remarkable how we can sometimes spend years using a computer without ever finding out what certain keys actually do. Perhaps the most mysterious of all is the Print Screen key, usually up at the top right hand side of the keyboard and often abbreviated to PrtScn. In the example below it is simple PS. Most PC users have tried pressing it a few times, had no response and automatically presumed it didn’t really do anything. It’s then usually forgotten forever, which is actually a shame because it does have a really useful function.

If you have a photograph, map, diagram or anything else on your screen that you’d like to place in a document or send to someone in an email, simply press Shift + Print Screen.

Then open an email or Word document and paste (control V). The image will miraculously appear, ready to be sent or saved.

It even copies stuff off emails that in the past you’ve probably wondered how to extract.

The World Of Comedy – According To Tim Vine On 7 October 2004, Tim Vine broke the Guinness World Record for the most jokes told in an hour with 499, beating the previous record of 362. Each joke told had to get a laugh from the paying audience to count towards the record.

He held the record until May 2005, when Australian comedian, Anthony "Lehmo" Lehmann told 549 jokes. We’ve absolutely no idea how they remember them all, but here’s a few of Vine’s offerings.

I start a new job in Seoul next week. I thought it was a good Korea move.

Central Heating for the kids on Halloween!

If your kids are anything like mine used to be they’ll be desperate to get out on Halloween Night for a bit of ‘Trick or Treating.’ Unfortunately, the worst thing about Halloween (as I remember it anyway) is that regardless of how great the September ‘Indian Summer’ had been, once October came in the weather deteriorated and by October 31st the kids always had to endure a cold, wet, windy night to pester the neighbours. That’s why my wife and I came up with a wonderful idea to heat them up before they set out and we devised this terrific Halloween Soup. Little did they realize that it was packed full of the nourishment derived from the vegetables they normally refused to eat. That’s probably because we made sure it was thick, whole hearted and above all else – tasty! Try it yourselves and your kids will love you for it.

Ingredients 2 tablespoons of oil ; 2 onions, 2 carrots, 2 celery sticks and around 8oz of swede – all chopped – 2 large cans of tomatoes ; 1 Tablespoon of tomato puree ; 2 teaspoons of salt ; 1 teaspoon of soft, brown sugar ; 2 Oxo cubes (beef or chicken, whichever you prefer) ; 1.5 litres of water ; 1 bouquet garni ; pepper.

Method Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onions and fry until softened. Stir in the carrots, celery, swede and the tomatoes with their juice.

Add the remaining ingredients, crumbling the Oxo cubes into the liquid and season with pepper to taste. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 40 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Cool slightly, remove the bouquet garni then zap in an electric blender or food processor until smooth.

Serve hot, in mugs, with plenty of crusty bread. Perfect for little monsters!
