apanese Acers, Birches and Vines will need pruning before Christmas to avoid the bleeding of the sap from the cut stems. Choose to do this on a day without frosts, so as to protect the plant as much as possible.

Root crops such as parsnips, leeks, kale, winter cabbages and sprouts should be harvested this month, ready for use with your Christmas lunch.

Ensure outside plumbing is well insulated, even if not in use, including outside taps, ponds and drainpipes. Switch off and drain any water attachments, store them indoors if at all possible.

Apply a dry mulch around borderlinehardy plants such as Agapanthus, Hedychium and Melianthus to protect the crown from the winter frosts and snow.

If you have fish in your pond, make sure they have air holes if the water freezes over. A rubber ball left to float should prevent the water from freezing over.

Start to reduce the amount of water you are giving to your houseplants. They require less water through the winter months, but keep an eye on any which are located near any sources of heat, such as radiators and heaters as these are prone to dry out more.

Unused terracotta pots need protection.

Bring them indoors or store them in your shed until spring. If you have some in use, wrap them in bubblewrap or newspaper to help protect them from the damaging frosts.

Containter-grown herbs can be brought inside, such as chives, mint and basil. They will do best on a sunny windowsill.

Apple and Pear trees can be pruned in December to maintain healthy growth

Bird feeders should be kept topped up with fresh seeds and nuts throughout the winter months. Bird baths will also need to be topped up during winter. A kettle of water in the morning will ensure a nonfrozen bird bath through most of the day.

Free insurance, a finance deposit contribution and eligibility for the scrappage scheme are all incentives that should encourage you to look more closely at this latest VW launch.

With prices starting from £13,855, the new Volkswagen Polo is now available to order for early 2018 delivery, so let’s look at those incentives a little more closely.

Those aged 18 to 80 can enjoy a year’s free car insurance cover when they buy a new Polo – and if they choose to buy via a 5.9 percent Solutions PCP, they’ll get a £500 deposit contribution thrown in too. There are, of course, terms and conditions that apply. If you want to buy the GTI version, for instance, you have to be 25 or over, while those aged 18-24 who wish to buy a regular Polo must have a telematics device fitted in order to qualify. Cars must also be registered by 31 March 2018.

That’s not the only incentive, either, because if you have a pre-2010 Euro 5 diesel vehicle, you can get £2,000 for it as part of the Volkswagen scrappage upgrade scheme. You’ll need to have owned the car for at least six months, though, and you

must order your new car by the 31st of December.

So is the new model worth a look, especially in view of the many new super - minis recently launched by major manufacturers that include Yaris, Clio, Fiesta, Corsa and Micra?

In important matters like performance, looks and equipment it most certainly is because VW are offering something very special. One prominent car expert, in fact, announced that “You could buy the Polo instead of a Golf and really not lose out very much, either in looks, practicality or the driving experience.”

The reason for his enthusiasm is that the new Polo is bigger, longer, wider and a bit lower than before, dismissing it as a standard super - mini and giving it an almost unique look in its class. Only available as a five door car, it looks great with a narrow grille that beautifully amalgamates with the headlights and really sporty lines that make the car look truly dynamic.

And as you would expect from a VW car it is beautifully solid and extremely well built with low noise levels and a suspension that - while firm - nevertheless gives a really comfortable ride.

LED running lights are standard across the range and every model, including the base S, gets an eight-inch colour touch screen. Its good looks can also be complimented with a wide colour choice that can be contrasted with a splash of dashboard colour that really does make it possible to introduce your own personality to the car.

The active info display that replaces the traditional instruments with a graphic display enables you to switch between various layouts. From the normal circular speedometer and rev counter you can instead switch to a numerical design that frees up space to provide additional information.

Additional technology that comes as standard includes pedestrian monitoring and front assist that help you avoid both

people and other cars by providing automatic emergency braking when appropriate.

There’s also lots of other safety technology like lane control and reversing camera as well as navigation and climate control but these are classed as extras and could cost you an additional four hundred pounds.

Six petrol engines are on offer from the 1.0-litre models up to a forthcoming 200hp GTI. All the 1.0 litre engines have three cylinders and four different power outputs are available offering five or six speed gearboxes and automatic transmission in the top two models.

Perhaps the most economical of the engines, however, is the 95hp model combined with a superb seven speed gearbox that makes it perfect for both long distance trips and for use around the town.

Economy is claimed to be around 63mpg.

So if all that sounds great, then get along to your local VW outlet to take advantage of all these great offers. You haven’t got too long!

EASY HOME-MADE MINCE PIES

Method: Mix the apple, alcohol and mincemeat.

Make the pastry: Cut the margarine into small cubes and put in a bowl. Add the flour and rub into the margarine until it resembles breadcrumbs. Try to bring it together into a ball. If it’s too dry, add a tiny bit of water but you shouldn’t need to (crumbly type pastry that just holds together enough to roll out is best).

Heat your oven to Gas Mark 6/200c. Have a 12-hole cake tin ready. Roll out the pastry, use a pastry cutter or something round i.e. a cup to cut out circles that are wider than the cake tin holes. When you have 12, put them into the cake tin. Fill them with mincemeat, put plenty in.

The shops are full of mince pies, but none taste better than home-made ones eaten warm from the oven.

The secret with making pastry is not to handle it too much, but if you like, you can use shop-bought shortcrust pastry.

Instead of cream, serve with evaporated milk or soy cream which both contain less Next, roll out the rest of the pastry and cholesterol. cut into small rounds (the size of the tin Ingredients: holes). Dampen the edges of the pastry 400g or 1lb jar mincemeat and press the edges of the tops onto the edges of the filled pastry bottoms. Take 1 apple grated a knife and make a slit in the top of each Tablespoon of whisky, port or brandy pie.

Take out 350g flour of the oven and leave a few minutes to 1 egg or some milk cool then gently take pies out and put on Sugar or icing sugar to sprinkle on top a rack to cool.

THE MANY FUNNY ASPECTS OF LIFE

I

n our humour column we often look at life and it’s somewhat funny aspects, and over the last few years I have heard numerous comments that I felt summed up that concept brilliantly.

I’ve now gathered enough together to share them with you. I’m sure you’ll find some of them both appropriate and familiar!

My wife says I only have two faults. The first is that I don’t listen and the second is some other stuff she was rattling on about.

My ‘Super Power’ is holding onto junk for years and finally getting rid of it a week before I need it.

I wonder if clouds ever look down on us and say ‘Hey, look, that one is shaped like an idiot.’

I’m beginning to think I’ll never be old enough to know better!

I got called pretty today. Well, actually the exact statement was ‘you’re pretty annoying,’ but I only focus on the positive things in life.

I have a condition that prevents me going on a diet. I get hungry.

I always knew I’d get old but I’m pretty surprised about how quickly it’s happening.

Apparently you have to eat healthy more than once to get fit and in shape.

This is cruel and unfair.

My wife heard that if you weigh 200lbs on earth you would only weigh 76lbs on Mars. She now claims she’s not fat, she’s just on the wrong planet!

When you see a man opening a car door for a woman there is one certainty ... it’s either a new car or a new wife!

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It’s hardly ever for them.

When I married ‘Miss Right’ I didn’t know her first name was ‘Always.’

And while on the subject, the reason dogs have so many friends is that they wag their tails instead of their tongues.

My wife and I get on really well because we always compromise. I admit I’m wrong and she agrees with me.

I honestly think that senility is going to be a pretty smooth transition for me.

I just asked my husband if he remembers what today is..... scaring men is so easy.

My girlfriend told me to see things from a woman’s point of view but she wasn’t amused when I looked out of the kitchen window.

When my husband told me he had the body of a Greek God. I had to explain to him that Buddah wasn’t Greek!

HAS THE NEW FORMATION FINALLY CLICKED?... ...Perhaps Not! ‘I’ve seen enough of our new players to suggest that individually they have decided talent, but it has to be combined with that of their colleagues to create great teamwork and the consequent results we all hope will follow. If it doesn’t happen in the next month or so we will undoubtedly find ourselves in an impossible position and the season will be relatively dead.’

I wrote that for the last edition after a reasonably good performance against Bournemouth, though the number of changes for that particular cup game should have precluded any possibility that such a performance might be some sort of catalyst for immediate improvement.

Yet it nevertheless seems to have been, and things were indeed infinitely more optimistic after two excellent away wins at Reading and Hull and a less convincing but nevertheless welcome win against Sunderland. Could this, we asked ourselves, be the start of something special in terms of both performance and consistency?

We would unfortunately have to wait a couple of weeks to find out because of the international break, but the impending trip to Elland Road and something of a derby match against Leeds was the perfect opportunity to judge whether we had

actually turned the corner. The doom-laden statistic from Leeds of six defeats in seven games also brought additional hope that we could continue our good run while rubbing salt into Leeds’ wounds.

But hey, this is ‘Boro and those of us who have well over sixty years’ experience of frustration, disappointment and the knowledge that Middlesbrough never do what is expected of them should have warned us that it was simply never going to happen. And let’s be honest, it ended up a poor performance that gave us exactly what we deserved.

So are we still in the same position as this time last month that we simply have to improve and show real consistency? The last two games have been against two of the worst performing teams in the league over the last ten matches yet we struggled against both.

But coming up are some conceivably difficult games against the likes of Derby, Bristol City and Ipswich. Apparently easier games will be against Birmingham and Millwall, yet knowing ‘Boro as we do we all know we are more likely to get points out of the former set of games than the latter.

Yet despite all the gloom that emanated from the defeat at Leeds we are still (at

the time of writing anyway) in the play-off positions and I think at this moment we would all take that at the end of the normal fixtures. But there is still a long way to go and nothing that has happened so far this season gives any indication of which way the remaining fixtures will go.

Recent results have shown us that a good run can make a huge difference and if we can achieve such a thing we could even challenge for automatic promotion.

Performing as we have against Sunderland and Leeds, however, could well suggest that we could be going nowhere.

As a life-long ‘Boro fan, though, I have that in-built trait of optimism that won’t let me consider any other possibility than a consistent set of good performances and results that will propel us up the league and into the top two spots.

Only time will tell!
