eep on with the dead heading and watering of all hanging baskets and containers.

Adding feed once a week will extend the flowering season and produce better plants.

Cut back the foliage from hardy geraniums once they have finished flowering as this should give a second flush of flowers later.

Cut back the foliage and stems of herbaceous plants, such as dicentra, when they start to die back but do not cut off the flower heads of ornamental grasses as these will give winter interest.

Dead head border plants such as roses, penstemons and bedding to extend their flowering into the autumn.

Prune climbing and rambler roses once they have finished flowering unless they are a repeat flowering variety or have attractive hips.

Towards the end of the month sow hardy annual seeds directly into the borders to over winter and produce earlier blooms the following spring.

Keep on top of the weeds with regular hoeing of annual weeds but use a

glyphosate based weedkiller for perennial weeds to kill the roots as well as the leaves.

Give hedges their final trim of the year.

Top up water features and ponds and aerate the water during very hot weather.

Lawn Mow lightly and frequently and leave the clippings on the lawn to act as a mulch in hot weather. Do not feed grass at this time of year.

Fruit and Vegetables Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted. Tie in new growth on blackberries and other hybrid berries.

Continually pick summer fruit as soon as it ripens. Any surplus can be frozen or made into jam.

Sow quick maturing salad crops such as lettuce, radish, rocket etc. Cut back flowered herbs like marjoram to get a second flush.

Pot up some herbs to bring indoors for use during the autumn and winter.

Continue to pick mature crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and

Wildlife Birds still need feeding at this time of year.

Hanging bird feeders are best placed over a hard surface such as paving and decking so that any dropped seeds can be easily swept up. This avoids the problem of vermin.

If you have a spare piece of bare soil, leave it to become a dust bath for the birds in dry weather.

If you are lucky enough to have a hedgehog in your vicinity try to encourage it into your garden by putting out some food. Do not put out bread and milk but instead some cat or dog food.

Finally if you have any spare time and there is a fairly long dry spell forecast, give your fences and sheds a coat of preserver.

THE NEW OCTAVIA - FURTHER PROOF OF SKODA’S MODERN APPEAL

T

here was a time in this country when the ŠKODA name was the butt of an untold number of snide remarks, but that has long since changed.

The political revolution of 1989 when the Berlin Wall was brought down introduced new market economy conditions and the government of the Czech Republic and the management of ŠKODA began to search for a strong foreign partner in an effort to secure the company’s long term international competitiveness.

In December 1990, they decided on Volkswagen and a joint venture began the following year. ŠKODA became the fourth brand in the Volkswagen group, alongside Volkswagen, Audi and Seat and since then, ŠKODA has gone from strength to strength, manufacturing not only many excellent cars but attracting many happy drivers.

One of its most popular brands has been the Octavia, with the VW influence loosely basing it on the Golf. The facelift that the 2017 model has undergone, however, abandons the previous looks and it has become much more individual with split headlights, a revised front bumper and LED rear lights.

The engine range is - to say the least - diverse, starting with a 1.0-litre petrol that is as environmentally friendly as it’s possible to get. From there the choice continues with a 1.4-litre petrol, a 1.6-litre diesel, a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel.

Probably the most practical of them is the strong, flexible and very quick 148bph 2.0-litre diesel, but even the 1.0-litre petrol version handles the size of the car extremely well.

It is particularly comfortable at high speeds making it a great long distance option. ŠKODA does offer adaptive suspension as an option in all but the 10-litre petrol and the 1.6-litre diesel models, though It’s hard to see how the extra expense can be justified as it’s is exactly what you would want from a family car with stability, comfort and light steering that makes it extremely easy to manoeuvre.

With the exception of the 1.0-litre models, all versions beyond the base S trim have variable driving modes called Eco, Normal and Sport.

They influence the accelerator and - where fitted - auto gear shift responses, the weight of the steering and the power of the climate control.

The infotainment system has a big and responsive screen and passenger space is at the top of its class. The standard 8.0in colour touch screen is very high definition and is the tool for controlling the system which includes digital radio, bluetooth and audio streaming.

Eight speakers are standard so sound quality is good.

There’s loads of front space so a very tall driver will feel comfortable. Similarly, the storage capacity compares more than favourably with its rivals. In the rear, the Octavia has the best space of any family hatch with plenty of leg room and good head and elbow space too.

Conventional seating flexibility means that levers on top of the seats release the 60/40 rear folding seats giving plenty of room for extra luggage. The boot itself is huge and there’s an option of a full sized spare wheel or a space saver spare that would fit under the boot floor without affecting luggage space.

There’s a lot to be had as standard with even the most basic S trim providing air conditioning, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, DAB radio, USB socket and 8.0in touch screen.

Stepping up to SE grade also gives you rear parking sensors, manual driver and passenger lumbar adjustment, a front centre arm rest, cruise control, a multi function steering wheel, climate control and rear electric windows.

A standard three year 60,000 mile manufacturer’s warranty is also included.

All Octavia models have seven airbags as standard and other safety features include stability control, hill-hold assist and tyre pressure monitors. The Octavia has been given the full five star crash test rating from Euro NCAP. An alarm and engine immobilisers are fitted to every model and it has high resistance to theft and break-in.

It’s an excellent, reliable car and if you’re looking to buy the perfect family motor it’s well worth a look!

Fruit & Linseed Smoothie 1 tablespoon of linseeds (already ground or just whole).

1 cup of soy milk (better than cow’s milk for conditions such as arthritis).

Choose your fruit – ½ an apple, a pear, ½ a banana, pineapple, ginger, cherries (put in the fruit mixture you fancy or if you want to do it cheaply just use either apple or banana). Blend (in a blender or use a hand blender).

Tip: The linseeds can be bought from a local supermarket in a 250g bag, but if you feel the health benefits you can order them in bulk online in 25kg bags (if 4-5 friends club together it works out much cheaper than supermarkets).

A SHAGGY DUCK STORY A DUCK walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich.

The barman looks at him and says, “hang on you’re a duck.”

“I see your eyes are working,” replies the duck.

“And you can talk!” exclaims the barman. ”I see your ears are working too” says the duck. “Now if you don’t mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?”

“Certainly, sorry about that,” says the barman as he pulls the duck’s pint. “It’s just we don’t get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing round this way?”

“I’m working on the building site across the road,” explains the duck. “I’m a plasterer.”

The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it. So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves.

The same thing happens for two weeks.

Then one day the circus comes to town.

The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to him “You’re with the circus, aren’t you? Well, I know

this duck that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!” “Sounds marvellous,” says the ringmaster, handing over his business card.

“Get him to give me a call.”

So the next day, when the duck comes into the pub, the barman says, “Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money.”

“I’m always looking for the next job,” Says the duck. “Where is it?”

“At the circus,” says the barman. “The circus” repeats the duck. “That’s right,” replies the barman.

“The circus?” the duck asks again. “With the big tent where all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in caravans?” says the duck. “Of course,” the barman replies.

“And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?” persists the duck.

“That’s right!” says the barman.

The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says.......” What the hell would they want with a plasterer?”

espite the fact that the signings Garry Monk has made so far look pretty decent, the pre-season friendly games up to the Rochdale defeat have done absolutely nothing to get the blood rushing.

Poor performances all round, really, but to we die-hard optimists it’s just been a question of getting players match fit and giving everybody as much pitch time as possible.

Hopefully, the Manager will have learned something about all of his players and It’s going to be really interesting to see what his first choice starting eleven will be against Wolves.

The biggest question is whether our six million pound man gets the shirt because Patrick Bamford’s only contribution so far has been a penalty.

And Judging by Britt Assombalonga’s record at Nottingham Forest it will almost certainly be him who steps up to the spot when things begin in earnest.

Mind you, if he’s going to make his mark in that department we’ll have to get some better decisions from referees than we have over the last few seasons because penalties have been few and far between. You can’t really blame refs for last season, though, because if nobody actually gets into the box there’s not much chance of getting a penalty in the first place.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of pre season has been the attitude towards Gaston Ramirez, because the sounds coming from his new manager suggest he could, after all, be playing a part this year. That could actually benefit us because we know when he’s in the mood just how good a player he can be.

His attitude towards the end of last season, though, has obviously put his former suitors off so if he’s still hoping for a move he’s going to have to turn it on during August to have any hope of being snapped up in what remains of the summer transfer window.

Either way, a consistent Ramirez is certainly worth having in the team even though his previous behaviour still leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Winning performances, however, would certainly sweeten it a bit.

Anyway, not long now before we will find out whether Garry Monk has assembled a squad capable of challenging in what has to be the hardest league in the world to get out of.

No doubt there will be a few more comings and goings between now and the end of August , but at least it looks as if the team will once again have great support with huge credit going to all the people who have already renewed their season tickets.

Let’s hope we all have something worth shouting about. Have a great season!
