In The Garden

D

eadhead Delphiniums and Lupins once they finish flowering to promote a further flush later.

Cut back hardy geraniums, heucheras and oriental poppies hard back. This will give some fresh foliage and maybe more flowers.

Put houseplants out in the garden for their ‘summer holiday’. Remember to take them back in during September before any frosts.

Once there has been a dry spell, give a coat of colour/preservative to fences, sheds and decking.

Rhododendrons, lilacs and hydrangeas can be dead headed but be careful not to cut too far back, merely taking just the blooms.

Hoe off any annual weeds but perennial weeds should be dug out making sure you take out all the root.

Keep hostas and other tender plants safe from slugs and snails. You can get a slug killer that is not harmful to wildlife or you can use beer traps, crushed egg shells or used coffee grounds.

Keep hanging baskets, containers and any newly planted shrubs or perennials well watered.

Take time out not only to walk round the garden hopefully every day to keep an eye on everything but most importantly SIT and ENJOY!

Lawns Mow the lawn more often now, usually at least once a week and reduce the cutting height if the weather is not too hot.

If you have any movable features on the lawn, such as tables, chairs, children’s toys or animals like rabbits in runs, make sure they are moved on a regular basis so the grass underneath can green up again.

If you have not already weeded and fed the lawn it is still not too late to apply a combined weed and feed.

A new lawn should be watered in dry spells to stop the turf from shrinking and failing to knit together and also water seed sown lawns to encourage growth.

If you have a lot of grass clippings put them on the compost heap in stages so that the compost does not go slimy.

Fruit and Vegetables Place straw or black polythene under strawberries to protect from rain splashes and slugs.

Place netting supported by raised canes to protect fruit from birds if you don’t yet have a fruit cage.

After the June drop of apple trees, if the apples still look too crowded thin them out to give better sized fruits that will ripen all the way round.

LOCAL ANSWER Keep picking rhubarb so that it does not have a chance to go to seed.

Train in the new canes of raspberries and blackberries by tying them in to say the left whilst the older canes are pulled to the right.

Early potatoes should be ready to dig now and maincrop ones will need earthing up.

Sow more lettuce, radish and beetroot in succession through the month.

Train tomato plants as they grow and pinch out the side shoots from cordon grown ones.

Run string attached at each end to posts to support broad beans as they grow and pinch out the growing tips to discourage black fly.

Keep all vegetable growing areas free from weeds.

Wildlife Roses that produce hips should not be hard pruned so that the hips may be left for the birds to enjoy as well as being decorative.

Leave a part of the garden untended, behind the shed is a good place, where wildlife can be safe. Any nettles can be cut back to provide fresh growth. Put the cuttings on the compost heap.

Make sure you have plenty of marginal planting around a wildlife pond as the tadpoles will be getting their legs and seeking shelter amongst plants at the side of the pond.

Put up a bat nesting box in a sunny position to encourage bats who will eat midges etc.

THE PLUSHER AND MORE REFINED KIA PICANTO

B

ecause city cars like the new Kia Picanto have become increasingly popular, most manufacturers now offer their own particular version.

Excellent examples are the Skoda Citigo, the Hyundai i10 and the Volkswagen Up, all offering the most important elements as far as potential buyers are concerned seriously cheap motoring, plenty of space, reasonable quality and good driving conditions.

So with so much competition already available in this market Kia have had to come up with something good to be able to compete. And they have done exactly that!

For a start, the Picanto has a choice of three engines - interestingly all small petrols - a manual or automatic gearbox and a five door configuration whatever the model.

There’s a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) 1.0-litre three cylinder. The second is similar but with a turbocharger that offers a bit more excitement and then there’s a 1.2 four cylinder version.

A five speed manual gearbox is standard,

but the 1.2 version also offers an optional four speed auto. Cheapest is obviously the naturally aspirated 1.0-litre and is a perfect choice for anyone who spends most of their time in and around town.

For longer trips, especially on motorways, a degree of patience is required. The turbo charged version is a little quicker but if you’re looking for zip and pace you should perhaps be looking elsewhere!

The 1.2 isn’t particularly quick either, though it’s a bit zippier than the 1.0-litre making it a reasonably good performer when

LOCAL ANSWER overtaking. And though I’m a bit prejudiced against automatics, I still believe the five speed manual makes better use of the engine’s potential performance than the automatic.

Internally, the driver’s seat is comfortably supportive, holds the driver well in place and thanks to a standard seat adjuster a good driving position is easy to find.

Driving visibility is excellent with a deep, wide windscreen and slender front pillars.

For passengers the car is airy and bright and - for its price, is relatively roomy, a fact made even better with the way Kia have moved the axles further apart. Getting in is easy with the five door layout on all models.

Rear seats split in a 60/40 configuration that folds relatively flat if you want to increase the boot’s load capacity. Regardless, the car still has one of the biggest boot capacities of its class, but even then you’re only looking at a couple of large shopping bags.

dependent on costs and early indications suggest this new Picanto will compare more than favourably with its competitors. It’s a more grown up alternative to the Renault Twingo and will give the Skoda Citigo a good run for its money.

But the new version is plusher, more refined and better to drive than its predecessor, making it an exciting class contender.

Recipe

CORNFLAKE JAM TART INGREDIENTS Pastry: 175g plain flour 85g butter (cold and cubed) 1 tbsp caster sugar 2 medium egg yolks 2 tbsp water (room temperature) Filling: 150g raspberry jam 75g butter 25g golden caster sugar 2 tbsp golden syrup 125g cornflakes

METHOD Start with the pastry – place the flour and butter in a bowl, and use your (clean) fingers to rub together until the mixture resemble bread crumbs.

Mix in the sugar with a spoon. Add 1 egg yolk and a tablespoon of water, and mix it in using a knife in a chopping motion. Add the other yolk and tablespoon of water and

mix it in with a knife again. Once it starts to come together, use your hands to bring the dough into a ball.

Wrap in cling-film and place in the fridge for an hour. Preheat the oven to 200c and generously grease a tart tin (A removable base is recommended, as you will see in a minute).

Take the dough from the fridge and place in the middle of the tart base. Roll outwards with a floured rolling-pin so that it is large enough to line your tart tin (but not too thick).

Try not to over work the pastry too much as it will affect the bake. Once it is rolled out, fold the edges inwards, and carefully place the base into the outer part of the tin (see below).

Unfold the edges and gently push into the sides of the tin. Leave any excess pastry on for now.

Line the pastry case with some greaseproof paper, fill with baking beans (or rice if you do not have any) and bake for 10 minutes.

Take out from the oven and remove the greaseproof paper and baking beans.

LOCAL ANSWER Gently ‘scrape’ off the excess edge with a sharp knife, and prick the base of the tart all over with a fork.

Place back in the oven and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, or until it is a nice pale brown colour and no longer moist.

Lower the oven to 180c and start on the filling. Heat the jam lightly in a saucepan until it is runny, and spread over the base of the tart.

Melt the butter, golden syrup and sugar in a saucepan over a medium heat; once melted, remove from the heat and stir in the cornflakes.

Spread evenly over the jam, then place in the oven for 10 – 15 minutes, or until the cornflakes turn golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 20 minutes before tucking in, as this will allow the cornflake topping to firm up slightly.

This is great served hot with custard, cold with cream, or completely on its own. Enjoy!

Middlesbrough F.C. A LOUSY END TO A DISAPPOINTING SEASON

T

he season finished with hardly a whimper. Nothing about the Liverpool game gave anybody any optimism for the next twelve months unless the majority of that side have gone and been replaced with players who show the same kind of commitment and loyalty that last season’s promotion winners demonstrated.

Fortunately, contracts and commitments suggest that many of them have played their last ineffective game for ‘Boro and with any luck we’ll be starting next season with a new manager and a bunch of players who show the same enthusiasm that ‘Boro supporters have always demonstrated despite the dreadful performances they have been forced to suffer week after week.

Steve Agnew is obviously a great bloke that has ‘Boro at his heart, but sadly he is not the managerial answer. His record speaks for itself, from his inability to persuade the players to stand behind the club at Charlton last season to his current record of one win in eleven games.

Perhaps his statistics can be laid at the door of our perceived ‘better players’ with the performance of Gaston Ramirez the best example. It’s sufficient to say that If that particular non-performer offered to stay and play for nothing next season the majority of ‘Boro supporters would despise the offer.

At the time of writing there are a number of names being bandied around for the next manager. Steve Gibson has shown in the past that he can unearth gems from outside the awful merry-go-round of experienced failures that are always mentioned whenever a position as good as this one becomes available.

He has given Bryan Robson, Steve

McClaren, Gareth Southgate and Aitor Karanka their first chance of managerial experience and all fulfilled his belief with a variety of successes, even if Gareth had to wait a while to be properly recognised.

The only manager he employed who could demonstrate both previous success and a wealth of experience was Gordon Strachan, but he put the club back years.

And while Tony Mowbray was becoming an established manager when he arrived his main objective was to get rid of as much of the Strachan wage bill as possible - a task he managed with huge aplomb, but unfortunately couldn’t maintain that kind of success.

So once again I find myself asking the question ‘Where do we go from here?’ Let’s hope that by next month there has been some kind of progress and we can begin to speculate on what the new names are going to achieve.

We look forward with both excitement and trepidation.

During that time we have enjoyed many great weekends in places like Pickering, Bow Ness and the war graves of France and Belgium with a number of like minded blokes who are as proud as I am to call him a friend.

I would love to think that many of his excellent work ethics have stemmed from his knowledge that he can always rely on the strongest possible support from people who appreciate how much of his life and his time have being devoted to our fantastic football club.

On behalf of us all I would therefore like to take this opportunity to wish him a wonderful retirement and a fabulous time with his absolutely gorgeous family.

He will obviously be a very hard act to follow, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish Craig Liddle the very best of luck and truly hope that while putting his own influence on the job he can also maintain the Parnaby philosophy well into the future.

Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People don’t decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains. Scientists believe this also makes you hard of hearing as it puts pressure on your inner ear.

Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature’s way of making older people do more exercise.

The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant, they aren’t scared of anything, they have been blessed to live this long, why be scared? And I don’t have acne. Life is Good!
