lant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, muscari and scilla but not tulips.

Continue with dead heading and weeding so that you extend the flowering season and keep soil nutrients and moisture for your plants and not the weeds.

If you have any large clumps of perennials or alpines then now is a good time to split and divide. Most plants can be separated into many smaller pieces which can all be replanted or given away. Discard the very old centre portion as this will not make a good new plant.

Plant out new spring bedding such as wallflowers, primula and bellis.

Bring inside any tender perennials such as fuchsia or geraniums before the first frosts.

If you have somewhere frost free they can be kept over winter or if not then take cuttings.

After the first frost lift cannas and dahlias or if you live in a sheltered spot you can try to leave them in the ground but cover them with straw or bracken.

If the edge of a lawn has broken down then cut out a patch round it of about one foot square and turn the turf round so that the broken edge is now next to the lawn and the good edge is facing out. The bare patch can then be sprinkled with fine soil or compost and then seeded.

Any outdoor tomatoes should be picked before frosts and brought indoors to ripen.

If the weather is not wet leave them to dry on the soil otherwise bring them into a dry shed.

Lift all root vegetables and store in a cool, dark and dry place. Leave parsnips in the ground as they are better tasting after being frosted.

Wildlife Clean out bird baths and keep them topped up with water.

As the breeding season for birds is not quite over it is still not safe to put out peanuts and other large bird food but continue with small bird food.

If you have the room, put a pile of twigs or logs in a quiet corner of the garden as these will become home to lots of wildlife. To make it an attractive area plant around the logs with primroses, ferns etc.

Do not cut back any plants with seed heads, such as sunflowers, as they provide a useful source of food for birds.

Make or buy a hedgehog hibernation box and leave it under a pile of dead leaves at the back of garden where it will be undisturbed. If making it yourself add a tunnel to the entrance hole to stop predators from entering the nest.

IS THE TIME NOW RIGHT FOR AN ELECTRIC CAR?

I

n January 2014 we observed that however much government and green support was being given to the development of the electric car, the motor buying public hadn’t yet cottoned on to the concept and only one per cent of UK drivers owned an AFV (alternative Fuel Vehicle).

Fast forward two and a half years and it seems the revolution has finally begun to speed up with currently around 80,000 plug-in vehicles on British roads compared with just 3,500 in 2013. This huge increase in electric cars in 2016 has come about because of a greater level of choice for drivers, a shift in the public’s attitude towards electric cars and a constantly improving public recharging network.

Combined, this means that UK electric car buyers have a greater selection of vehicles to choose from than ever before.

The real truth, of course, is that electric cars have a limited ownership potential because although the average 124 mile range suits many daily commuters who use the car as a cheap way to get to work, there are many more to whom that distance limitation would be a real put-off! Add the fact that if you do run out of charge it takes around

half an hour to achieve an eighty per cent charge even at a commercial Rapid charging unit and that is also a big disadvantage to those who value their time.

On the plus side, though, is the fact you can plug your car into the mains overnight ready for next morning and charge during the time when electricity tariffs are at their cheapest. There is also the good news that driving downhill without using the accelerator will automatically begin to recharge the battery.

Nissan, whose ‘Leaf’ model is the world’s best-selling electric car ever, with more than 180,000 already being sold, claim operating cost is less than 2p a mile compared to the 10p a mile of an equivalent petrol car (That it has been produced at Nissan’s Sunderland plant since 2013 should also make North Easterners quite proud).

Sadly, the really good news on the running costs has to be weighed up against the fact that electric cars are considerably more expensive to buy than a conventional petrol or diesel car, even though that is offset in Britain with the grant still being offered by the British government to the UK’s electric car buyers. The grant covers 35% of the cost

LOCAL ANSWER of a car up to a maximum of either £2,500 or £4,500 depending on the model, or 20% of the cost of a van, up to a maximum of £8,000. The ‘cost’ is the full purchase price you pay for the basic vehicle - including number plates, vehicle excise duty and VAT, but doesn’t include delivery charges, registration fee or any optional extras. There are 4 categories of low emission vehicles and the grant you can get depends on the category, so it’s advisable to find out more before you look to buy. In all, though, there is a pretty wide choice these days so you won’t be too limited.

Perhaps the biggest financial disadvantage is that depreciation is extremely high with many electric cars losing as much value in the first year as some conventional cars lose in three. Given that there is no government grant on used electric cars, however, that will help your used car to sell better once you decide to upgrade.

Looking at the Leaf in particular, big strides have been made to offer the car buying public a real choice. When the car first launched there was only one model available, but now there are three different trim levels to choose from. These include the entry-level Visia model, Acenta and the top-spec Tekna variant, with a 30kWh battery available on the two higher trims that raises the range per full charge to 155 miles.

As you’d expect from a forward-thinking electric car, there’s lots of tech on offer in the Leaf as well. All cars get Bluetooth and USB connectivity, as well as keyless ignition.

Moving up to Visia+ specification adds a reversing camera and sat-nav, alloy wheels and tinted glass, while the Acenta variant benefits from Nissan’s Carwings system, an extra driving mode to increase regenerative braking and cruise control. Top-of-therange Tekna versions also get a sevenspeaker Bose stereo, a 360-degree aroundview camera system, heated front and rear seats, larger 17-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights.

Smooth, silent running is a wonderful advantage for the electric car but in everything else it feels just like a normal family hatchback from behind the wheel. Courtesy of its battery-powered motor, for instance, the Nissan Leaf will accelerate from 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 89mph. That’s perfectly adequate for most driving situations. And despite many people still thinking that an electric car is a pretty quirky concept they will still look perfectly normal on your drive with a choice of styles and sizes to suit most tastes.

It’s very much a personal thing, of course, but if your lifestyle is perfectly suited to the electric car it’s probably something you could look at with great interest. For the majority, however, the obvious restrictions are still sufficiently off putting to put this type of vehicle into the ‘niche’ category and will therefore never really take over from conventional cars. The decision can only be yours!

Humour IT’S A FUNNY OLD THING, MARRIAGE! In the past we have frequently made observations about the strange relationships that can exist between husband and wife and how funny they can often be. Here are some more excellent examples....

A man was sitting at his computer one day drafting has will and he called out to his wife, “When I die I’m going to leave everything to you love.” She shouted back, “You already do, you lazy sod!

A husband asked his wife to give him some idea of what she would like for her birthday.

And finally, a few quick observations on men and women’s attitude to their partners.....

“Marriage,” said a man “is just a very expensive way to get your laundry done free.

The most effective way to remember your wife’s birthday is to forget it once.

The true irony of marriage.... a woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn’t. A man marries a woman expecting that she won’t change and she does.

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

Sorry girls, I’ve realised there’s a touch of chauvinism about this piece but hell, I’m only a man!

A GREAT START - LONG MAY IT CONTINUE!

O

nce again I have to apologise that because of deadlines I’m writing this well in advance of distribution. There is, however, no apology for the euphoria that will be evident in the next few paragraphs. That’s because this is being written just a few hours after the superb win at Sunderland.

Despite the ‘second game derby win’ statistics for the last five Sunderland managers, ‘Boro easily overcame that particular hoodoo. (If you aren’t familiar with the facts, the last five incoming Sunderland managers have lost their first game in charge only to face a derby in their second. On all five occasions that match ended in a Sunderland win. To be fair, though, they were only playing Newcastle). On this occasion they were playing a resolute, attacking and confident ‘Boro side that scored two great goals and - after Sunderland’s initial ten minute domination - never looked like losing.

This will also be a bit historical by the time you read it but the Stoke game should have ended as the first ‘Boro win. Just how long should a referee allow his ‘advantage’ decision to stand?

We all know it was a foul just outside the box, but after waving play-on the ref gave Stoke at least ten seconds and four passes to secure their advantage.

Once we successfully took the ball from them he reverted to the original free kick. It seemed obvious that unless Stoke actually scored from the ‘advantage’ they would have been given the

free kick from which they scored their equalising goal. We are therefore entitled to believe that the ref’s decision cost us joint top position after two games. That - for at least a week, anyway - would have allowed us to think we were about to ‘do a Leicester.’

Back to reality, though, and even though we’ve performed admirably in the first two games, I can’t help feeling there is still a huge mountain to climb in the next nine months. Initially, the fixture list has given us a great opportunity to attain a strong position after a few games because both West Brom (A) and Crystal Palace (H) are winnable fixtures. But that means we still have to play the ‘big boys’ and that’s when things might change. But if we look at the way newly promoted Bournemouth performed last year and the important points they gained early on, their relatively poor end of the season was alleviated by that sterling start.

Accruing early points before the rest of the Premiership assess your strengths and weaknesses is a wonderful way to give you the chance of retaining Premiership status. That’s why a good start to the season is imperative. Let’s be honest, most of us would have given our right arm for a win and a draw in the first two games and the same scenario against West Brom and Palace would give us that great start to the season.

The truth is that anything gained against the likes of the two Manchester sides, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and ‘Spurs is a bonus, but all we ‘Boro

LOCAL ANSWER fans should be interested in at the moment are wins against the teams we consider our peers.

If those performances can enable us to stay up without any worrying finales we can try to go one better next year and build on our Premiership status the way we did all those years ago under Bryan Robson.

Our first two performances suggest we are totally capable of achieving that aim, but if - by the time you read this - we have struggled against West Brom and Palace there is more work to be done. On the other hand, I believe that won’t be the scenario and we will have had a wonderful start that will eventually lead to us becoming a Premiership league team to be reckoned with.

I honestly believe we have the right men at the helm.

Aitor Karanka - despite the well publicised traumas of last year - has shown his immense potential.

Steve Gibson -the catalyst for everything that the club has achieved since 1986 - deserves every success Middlesbrough FC can achieve. It’s been a great start for both of them. Long may it continue!
