In The Garden

J

uly is the month where a little bit of everything in the plant world is either on its way out (yellowy straggly leaves from spring bulbs and Violas), in full flower looking at its peak (Roses, Lavender & Honeysuckle), or on its way in (Dahlias, Chrysanthemums, maturing fruits).

To keep on top of the garden tasks and have time to relax and enjoy your special spot of paradise try and do the following:-

In The Garden Regularly deadhead roses, summer bedding plants and hanging basket plants.

This will keep them looking at their best and promote more flowers.

Tie in and support any plants that are leaning over towards the sun or weighed down by rainwater. These can include sedums, sunflowers, dahlias, rambling and climbing roses.

Watering too much as well as watering too little can be just as damaging so ensure your plants are getting the right amount.

If you have homemade compost that is ready to use, mulch plants after watering to hold in moisture. This also acts as a weed suppressor.

Make your own quick organic nettle plant tonic to give plants a dose of nitrogen which promotes healthy leafy growth.

Chop nettles, place in bucket with pebbles to keep nettles from floating, fill with water, leave for 3/4 weeks and use diluted one part concentrate to ten parts water. The mixture gets a bit smelly so don’t put it too near the house!

Chop the leaves of nettles and put them onto the compost heap to give it a nitrogen rich boost. Hoe around vegetable plants to keep weeds down before they become bigger than the plant and take all the nutrients.

The Lawn New lawns need to be watered if the weather is dry as they need to establish in the first year.

Older lawns will benefit from a summer feed to keep them looking at their best.

A general all round feed is best but if you have to treat for moss or weed then use a combined feed and killer. Unfortunately weedkiller kills wildflowers too so if you want daisies in your lawn, think again!

Add small amounts of lawn clippings to the compost heap and use to mulch around plants in very dry weather to help with moisture loss.

The Greenhouse Tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and aubergines all need to be fed with a high

LOCAL ANSWER potash solution at weekly/fortnightly intervals and the soil kept moist but not sodden at all times.

Temperatures rocket in the greenhouse during July so many gardeners use a white shading paint on the glass that gets the most sun and this is easily wiped off in the autumn.

Damping down is needed in the greenhouse on most hot days to keep humidity levels up. When you have finished watering the plants walk backwards towards the door and douse down the floor with the hose or watering can.

Remove side shoots of tomato plants above leaf axils to encourage taller stronger plant growth.

Cuttings of hydrangeas, cotoneasters, fuchsias and pelargoniums can be taken in July as the warmer weather will encourage vigorous root growth and give new plants a good head start before winter.

LANDSCAPES DRIVEWAY & PATIO SPECIALIST

Wildlife Ponds need to kept topped up with water as it evaporates in the hot weather. Rainwater is preferable but tap water can be hosed in little and often as necessary. This will maintain the pond’s eco balance.

Blanket weed and dead foliage i.e. fallen leaves and decaying lily leaves, need to be removed before they sink to the bottom of the pond.

Look out for Lepidopteras! No, not dinosaurs... Butterflies and moths that are fluttering about in abundance this month.

Butterflies are particularly attracted to the nectar rich flowers on Buddleias, Echinacea, Marjoram, Thyme and French Marigolds.

Put a shallow bowl of water out in the border for birds and hedgehogs and keep it topped up.

If you have a bird bath keep the water clean and clear to help prevent diseases like Bird Pox spreading amongst the bird population.

This applies to bird feeders too. Rinsing them with a weak solution of household bleach at regular intervals is a good idea.

THE LEON - A REALLY COMPETITIVE SMALL CAR OFFERING FROM SEAT

I

f you’re looking for a small, stylish family car that represents great competition to more normal purchases like Ford, Vauxhall, VW and Peugeot then the new Seat Leon range is really worth a look.

It’s a stylish and sensible set of small family cars that offers a choice of efficient turbocharged petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines that give levels of economy and CO2 emissions that appeal to both company car choosers and private buyers alike.

Yet despite being smaller and more efficient, the four door version offers excellent space for four adults, a deceivingly large boot that can cope with plenty of luggage or a large weekly shop, and is extremely comfortable and a pleasure to drive.

It’s also offered as a three-door version - the SC – which although is considerably more stylish has inevitably less interior space.

The boot, however, is the same size as the four-door.

Climb into the Leon and it won’t be hard

to find a driving position that you’re happy with, thanks to an excellent range of adjustment for both the steering wheel and seat. Suspension settings are a little on the firm side but that certainly improves with speed and gives you a more secure feeling than with some of its rivals.

Nevertheless, steering is precise and consistent so the fine body control and excellent cornering ability more than make up for the initial firmness. The diesel version is a little noisier than the smooth and quiet petrol engine but the superb design makes wind and road noise almost non-existent in both.

Safety-wise, the Leon comes with seven

LOCAL ANSWER airbags, including a driver’s knee ’bag, and this helped it earn the maximum five-star rating when it was crash tested by car safety specialists Euro NCAP. Its score for child occupant protection was also particularly impressive and bettered those of all its key rivals. What’s more, the Leon matched the VW Golf for adult occupant protection, while scoring better than the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. Electronic driver aids that boost stability, amplify braking force and prevent locked brakes are all fitted as standard.

As far as ‘extras’ are concerned, the cheapest S-spec Leons are a little basic, though they do at least come with air-conditioning and a Bluetooth hands-free phone connection.

It would be good to see some of the more desirable option packs being offered on this value-focused S edition, but as things stand you need the SE and FR versions to find particularly strong levels of standard equipment.

SE models add alloy wheels and cruise control, while FRs also have sports seats, front and rear parking sensors and a dualzone climate control system that lets the driver and front passenger select different temperatures.

If you do opt for a high-spec version, the motion-sensing sat nav will spot your hovering finger and obligingly display lots more buttons. Unfortunately, you have to pay extra for a digital radio and automatic lights and wipers on every Leon except the Copra.

In all versions the nasty hard-touch plastics of previous models have been eliminated from the dash top, while the seats and stitching are smart and comfortable.

It’s a creditable effort from Seat and a notable improvement with plenty of appeal for those who like a bit of style and spirit about their car but who don’t want to pay the premium that is normally associated with those particular desires.

Pricewise, you’ll find a range of £17,345 up

to £23,370 depending on the model and spec, but that undercuts the equivalent Golf by around ten percent.

The engines are as economical as in the Golf too, and are very fuel efficient indeed.

Impressive Seat claims of 74mpg for the 1.6 TDI and 60mpg for the sparkling 1.4 TSI ACT can’t be sniffed at!

Overall, it’s a stylish and practical family hatchback that’s hard to beat thanks to its excellent driving experience, low price and reasonable running costs.

Humour STRICTLY FOR WINE LOVERS

T

he joy of a glass of wine is one of life’s little pleasures so for those people who’ve never bothered to try it here are a few comments from wine drinkers that might make you feel like giving it a go – or not! Enjoy!

I only drink a little, but when I do I turn into another person who drinks a lot!

Sometimes when I reflect on all the wine I drink I feel ashamed but then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this wine they might be out of a job and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself ‘it is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true instead of being selfish and worry about my liver.’

I don’t drink alcohol I drink distilled spirits, so I’m not an alcoholic, I’m a spiritualist.

I’ve got salad for lunch. Actually, it’s fruit salad. Well, mostly grapes. OK – all grapes.

Wine, I‘ve got wine for lunch!

There should be this little wine truck that drives around the neighbourhood in the evening playing French music. And we would hear it and run out into the street with our money. Just like an ice cream truck but with champagne.

Did you know that 2 or 3 glasses of wine a day can reduce your risk of giving a damn.

I can’t be an alcoholic. Alcoholics need a drink and I’ve already got one.

‘In case of accident bring cheese and crackers - lots and lots of cheese and crackers.’

Of course size matters. Who the hell wants a small glass of wine?

People who wonder whether a glass is half full or half empty are missing the point.

The glass is refillable!

Lord, give me coffee to change the things I can change and wine to accept the things I can’t.

Not to get technical about things but according to chemistry alcohol is a solution.

Sometimes I write ‘drink wine’ on my daily ‘to-do’ list just so I feel like I accomplished something.

I enjoy a glass of wine every night for its health benefits. The other three are for my witty comebacks and fluid dance movements!

Wine is to women what duct tape is to men.

It fixes everything.

I only drink on two occasions. When it’s my birthday and when it’s not.

I like to drink wine from an extra large glass.

It’s classier than just drinking from the bottle.

I was sitting on the couch last night with my husband and a glass of wine and I said ‘I love you so much I don’t know what I’d do without you.’ My husband looked at me and said ‘Is that you or the wine talking?’

‘It’s me,’ I said, ‘talking to the wine!’

After a long day at work I can’t wait to get home and pour myself some dinner.
