ut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example) They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease.
Clean out the greenhouse Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat
at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!
Drain and lag... Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.
Prepare your soil for next year For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below

Rake fallen leaves Fallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (two in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and free home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.

BIG CHANGES AND THE INTRODUCTION OF BMW ENGINES FOR NEW TOYOTA AVENSIS
F
ollowing the most comprehensive facelift of any Toyota model to date, the 2015 version of the Toyota Avensis has now been launched with the company announcing higher investment in this facelift than any undertaken before.
Economically, Toyota are claiming 68.9mpg for the 1.6 and 62.8 for the 2.0-litre diesel version. Emissions are 119g/km of CO2.
And because the new model is aimed primarily at the European market, Toyota UK has been able to contribute significantly to the new design. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the new model is its use of BMW diesel engines, with a 110hp 1.6litre replacing the original 2 litre version and a 141hp 2.0 litre unit replacing the original 2.2 litre version. The former is 20kg lighter than the old unit and gets from 0-62mph in 11.4 seconds. It has a 112mph top speed, while CO2 emissions are 108g/km.
The petrol engines have also been tweaked, with reductions in CO2 emissions ranging from 8g/km to 19g/ km. Even more importantly, the Avensis’

BACK ON TRACK AFTER A POOR OCTOBER
U
nfortunately, deadlines mean I am once again in a position of writing this column just before an exciting and potentially vital string of matches. It follows a disappointing set of results that saw the excellent away win at Wolves somewhat alleviate the disaster of three goalless games in which the 0-0 draw against Fulham and the ludicrously unfortunate George Friend own goal against Cardiff give us a single point from a potential nine. For those of us who are perennial optimists, the Wolves result catapulted us back into potential league winners because no-one who knows football can possibly believe that Brighton can maintain the very special start to the season they have enjoyed. Sadly, we also said that about Bournemouth last year and look what happened! That’s the joy of football nobody can possibly forecast all the end results. But now we are back in the top four and have excellent opportunities to once again demonstrate the fantastic effect Aitor Karanka has had on the club since his arrival. The Manchester United game could be so fulfilling but their draw against
league leaders Manchester City suggests they will be a hard nut to crack. By the time you read this you’ll know whether they were able to justify their obvious favouritism, but let’s be honest, that game is nowhere near as important as the forthcoming home league games against Charlton and Rotherham. The current league positions of both adversaries suggests they should be two comfortable victories and the six points such results would generate could certainly see us back in the automatic promotion positions. Whatever happens, it’s difficult to argue against the notion that this is a wonderful opportunity to begin to once again emphasise our obvious promotion credentials. That the club is constantly progressing couldn’t have been better emphasised than by the under-nineteen’s wonderful comeback against Stade de Reims on their own European journey. It was a return to the remarkable European nights when we came twice back from seemingly impossible positions against Bucharest and Basel to reach the final against Sevilla. The kids had been 5-1

LOCAL ANSWER down at one point in the two leg tie but eventually overcame an obviously talented side to win 6-5. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the night was that - despite the top ticket price being a mere £5, only around two thousand of us attended the game to give the kids the backing they thoroughly deserved. I sincerely hope that many more will book tickets for the next first leg home fixture against Torino that could generate real fireworks on the night of November the fifth. First team wise, however, the season is progressing with its usual mixture of doubt and ambition and to be fair results and performances have reflected those emotions. But Aitor has created a squad that has real depth and an ability to overcome most of the problems that may arise. Personally, I have every confidence that this is the season when we could well return to where we belong.

BANOFFEE PIE INGREDIENTS 1 tin Carnation Condensed Milk 9 oz (225g) / 10-12 McVities Digestive Biscuits. Alternatively use Hob Nobs 3 oz (75g) butter 3-4 Bananas Double / whipping cream (1 medium carton) Cocoa powder or Chocolate for topping
METHOD Grease an 8 inch (20 cm) round loose-based cake tin (the pie will be pushed up through the tin). Without opening the contents, place the tin of condensed milk in a pan of water and bring to the boil, leaving to simmer for 1 hour and 45 mins. Alternatively, buy ready boiled Carnation Toffee in a tin, warm per instructions, and pour over base. Meanwhile make the banoffee pie biscuit base: Melt the butter in a pan on a very low heat to allow time to crush the biscuits.
Break and crush the biscuits and place in a mixing bowl. Add the melted butter to the biscuits and stir thoroughly (biscuit appears quite dry but this will set hard – see next step) Press the biscuit mix into the cake tin starting from the centre and working to the edge so that it’s flat in the middle but rises (ramps) up to the edges, approximately 3cm high (this will form a slight bowl or hollow shape to stop the melted condensed milk from touching the edges). Place biscuit base in the fridge for about an hour to set. Make the cream topping: Whisk the cream until thick. Half of the bananas can be chopped and added to the mix at this stage. However, as the remaining bananas are to be added at the end, the bananas can be added to the cream just before it is added to the cake. Making the pie: After an hour and 45 minutes, carefully remove the cooked condensed milk tin

from the simmering pan, and without opening, leave to one side for about 5 minutes. Carefully open the tin and pour the contents onto the biscuit base, spreading evenly. Boil Carnation Condensed Milk to make the toffee. Leave to chill for an hour in the fridge (or if short of time, 30 minutes in the freezer). If not already done (earlier), chop half the bananas and add to the cream. Spread the cream over the chilled pie. Mix half of the bananas into the cream and spread over chilled toffee. Chop the remaining bananas and place decoratively on top. Finally, decorate by sprinkling either cocoa powder, crushed cadburys flake, or shaved chocolate. Enjoy!
